    Initial History

How did a former athlete who was 9% body fat in college get to this point? Well I was born with a bad heart valve that wore out faster than my body did. In my early 40s suddenly I was gasping for breath, by my late 40s I was type 2 diabetic, at 50 I had surgery for diverticulitus and lost 4" of my colon which slowed me down more. At 52 I had open heart surgery where they replaced the valve and found a aneurysm which would have killed me. However, I came out of this unable to lift weights, play softball or baseball, with a right arm and shoulder with nerve damage in it and a bad knee and hip. Then the meds quit controlling my diabetes, the new meds added weight and now it is out of control, I have nerve damage in my feet and my wife has to look at them every night to make sure I don't wind up with an infection. I was approved as a metabolic Weight Loss Patient on the first go around. I am now on my second doctor because the staff of the first one frankly was incompetent. I was lied to when they told me that they had filed FMLA, and I was pre-approved by insurance, they hadnt submitted either one of them. So being the analyst that I am I checked and found out everything. Added to that the hospital that they wanted to have the surgery in didnt have the best reputation. I should have had the surgery two months ago to keep nerve damage to a minimum. I am very nervous, from my major surgeries I live with pain every day. I was told that while they can do the sleeve that the results are better with bypass. However, the horror stories with malabsorption worry me. I am doing this to be able to have a life again not just to trade one set of issues for a whole other set. So any feedback is appreciated.
  2. Misty, were/are you following your bypass guidelines? I sitil don't drink for a half hour before or after my meals etc. I did stop journaling my food but stated again after gaining some stress eating pounds ands it's working. I already lost a couple of the 10 I had put back on.I continually tell myself I don't want to waste all I gained and all the money I spent. You can do it! Get a nutritionist to help you if you need to keep you on track. Tell yourself that you will not let this food take over your life! You CAN do it!
  3. First off, during the first two months post surgery, your stonach is still healing. Please be sure to follow the prescribed diet. Secondly, never weigh yourself the first month. Your body is in chaos and weight is a non-issue. Thirdly, many of those with 30lb losses in any month are either very high bmi, or had complications. The average first month loss is 15lbs, and 10lbs thereafter. Normal for you might be higher or lower. Stick to your plan, and you'll do well!

3 week post op loss ?

Did you have bypass or sleeve? GB leads me to believe you had bypass but this is in the sleeve forum so wanted to be sure. Do you have a nutritionist? If so I would be really surprised if they said breads & rice were okay to eat this early out. For most people those things are big no-nos. Mainly because they are carbs, they're pretty much devoid of nutritional value, and they typically do not sit well in the stomach so close to surgery. Everybody is different in their weight loss, and while you may not be able to prove that the carbs you are eating are directly related to that I would get rid of them pronto.

    APPROVED FINALLY!

Aetna and Tricare, but tricare does not cover the sleeve yet. My guess is that they will eventually, but they have been slow to add weight loss surgeries to what they cover. They cover other procedures like lap and, but The band is not for me.

    Before The First Fill

I was banded on August 12, 2011. My first fill wasnt for 6 weeks. My doctor stated that it take 6 weeks to heal and he absolutely does no do a fill prior to the 6 week mark. I recieved the small band during surgery. My starting weight was 316, and I had dropped 20 pounds during that six weeks with no fill so I was already getting some restriction from my band. My first fill was done on 9-23. I have been losing weight this whole time but just recently got in to my "green" zone and have been able to completly skip my last 2 appointments. I now weigh 258. 58 pounds down in 5 months. You will get there, it just takes time. Talk with your doctor, make sure you communicate. Make sure your not drinking fluid an hour before you eat or 30 minutes after because it will move food through your stoma faster. Also make sure you are eating WHOLE solid proteins and staying away from soft foods like mashed potatoes, jello, pudding, things like that. MEAT MEAT MEAT!!! Hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, chicken, turkey.. Also, junk food breaks down a lot faster, crackers and pretzels, chips and cookies are all considered slider foods and can pass through quickly, or if your in your green zone, these items can also get stuck. I concentrate mainly on meat and cheese because those are the best available for protein and then maybe a few bites of veggies if i have room but I ALWAYS finish my solid meats first. and I really dont want my hair to fall out because of vitamin deficiency so I also take my daily vitamins. Good luck with your journey and remember, this is the tool that you needed to make it work and you WILL get there, maybe not your next fill, or even the next, but you will start to feel restriction.

    Recognizing and Overcoming Limitations

Hey Sojourner! I agree with you - I choose to see "limitations" instead as "challenges" - to me, that puts them in the category of something I can overcome, not something I have to live with. I, like you, had to reframe my beliefs. If I had chosen to believe that I was doomed to be overweight (due to a combination of my own bad eating habits and my family history) then I would not have followed through with my research and gotten my lap-band. I believe that I can overcome ANY challenge - hence the post above. Congrats on your weight loss - 95 lbs is a great success - and I wish you nothing but success in your future! :-)

    Having an overload of feelings

Oh the joys of weight loss hormones. Us woman just get ALL the fun! So on top of everything, you know, the emotionally massive act of removing our stomach and changing the way we live our lives to almost it's core, we also have to deal with the extra hormones our bodies are flooded with post surgery. I think I read here that woman are like 3xs as fertile after weight loss surgery because of the hormones. Anyway I think you have to perfectly natural and normal things happening: The effects of what we've done, which means our means of self-soothing are gone mostly and we can't make ourselves feel better like we used too and The hormone effect. So what I did was just ride it out. I cried, I got angry, I felt the emotions as they came and rejoiced when I started feeling happy and normal again. It was hard. Hang in there, it gets so much better but first we have to go through the rough stuff.
  11. I decided to only share my decision with my husband and two sons. My parents and relatives are very judgmental and I don’t want to hear their nasty opinions. We live in different states and they probably won’t see me anyhow. When the time comes to see friends or attend my husband’s company Christmas party, I have a plan. If they are nosey and ask how I lost weight, I will say that I saw a dietician and followed a strict liqud diet. It’s the partial truth. They don’t need to know all the details. It’s none of their business.
  12. I have not had my surgery yet but its fast approaching, May 3rd. There is only 1 person who knows, my husband. I have older kids and younger kids (2 are still at home). Like others have said in their posts, I do not find it to be anyone's business that I have a sleeve. My kids I have not told because the older ones do not come around enough anyway to visit and Ill probably be on regular food by the time they do lol. My younger 2 children that are still at home (girl 17, boy 11) I have not told because my youngest son would be worried like crazy on surgery day. I do not want to cause any undue stress for him. As for my coworkers, no one knows from there either. I do believe most would be supportive because I had 3 coworkers who had gastric bypass. Two of which is on a fast track of gaining their weight back post surgery 4 yrs. At current I am still working from home and only go to the office 1 week a month. I was just there last week and one coworker said I looked like I have lost weight since she last saw me (Ive lost 17 lbs in the last few months) but I didnt think it was noticeable. Obviously we cannot dodge the looks and questions post surgery because we are losing weight, but at least I dont have to be judged or questioned why I would go down this road ahead of surgery. I kindof view it this way its my health, my decision. Once its done its done. My hubby is from (W Yorkshire) England and he left his family, friends and country because he loves me. He is very supportive of me. He doesnt necessarily agree with the surgical aspect of things but I know he will be there for me and will help me through the mood swings, the pain and he knows if I go down a dark path of thoughts to give me his hand and help me back to where I need to be (I hear some ppl become depressed post op) I have never experienced that but if I do he will be there to help me. He always has been. You will tell ppl in due time as you feel more comfortable (as will I perhaps) and I agree with what blackcatsandbaddecisions said If brought up we dont have to talk about it especially if its from a judgmental person/family member!
  13. Hello everybody, I just can't believe it I am almost there! I received the most awaited phone call in the last 2 weeks. They told me I was approved and scheduled for surgery on May 27. I just want to give some words of encouragement, I am a low BMI (35.7) with PCOS, Infertility, Hypothyroidism, sleep Apnea and begining stages of Diabetes II. So I have the comorbidities, but still low BMI, so there is hope out there. Insurance companies seem to be approving faster now, I think because they see that with the lap band is one time investment in your health and form that point you will be healthy....Treatment of the Diabetes is very expensive and infertility just to mention, so they are thinking twice before they reject someone. Please keep trying, it took me 7 months from the begining of this journal, and at some point I was just tired of appoinmt. supervised diets, etc.etc everything without knowing if I was gonna get apporved or not... But I was persistent, with wishful thinking and hoping for the best. I will keep my journal posted, perhaps I will create a blog to keep everybody uptodate in this new road. good energy to everybody Good Luck Vicky Barberena Austin, TX Surgery 5/27/08 Current weight 202 Goal 135

    Workout classes

I could barely walk for the first year or so - my weight was just too high and my joints/back too damaged. I still have never went to a class but I go do go to the gym twice a week. Today I did 35 minutes on the incline setting on the treadmill going very briskly. Almost needed oxygen but this is my commitment. Most of us eventually do give in and do something about getting physically fit. The weight loss stops being a passive process after a while.

    Workout classes

Hi I am 7 weeks post op & have been walking for exercise up to now. I got cleared to start with 10 lb weights & increase as tolerated. I am wondering when did anyone start any workout classes in their local gym classes? I really want to pick up some classes too. Thank you

    Got the phone call!

Im in the Kaiser program now too, It's actually a great resource to learn everything you will need to know before the surgery (mind you some of the stuff they talk about is just repetitive and overkill for anyone who has ever tried to lose weight ). My program is 24 weeks as opposed to 12, but it has gone by pretty quick so far (6 weeks in). I know I have to start getting on track to lose my 10%, but I also kind figure that I can lose it in the 4 months of classes that I have after the first of the year...good luck to you!!

    Got the phone call!

Awesome! You must be in San Diego area! We will be getting sleeved around the same time since we'll be finishing classes around the same time! So it's 10% of your starting weight at the orientation that they took? Do u know if you lose too much you can then not qualify?
  18. I cancelled surgery 5 years ago. I had lost weight in the pre-3 month phase and more at a strenuous job. I was afraid of surgery for various reasons. I did keep that weight off for about a year and a half. Then I gained it back, plus more, then lost it, then plateaued, then had a devastating break-up where I lost 40 pounds in four months. Got bone spurs from anger/crying hiking..another year and a half passed and this school year, I gained even a bit more and have 'life styled and dieted' myself up a good 25 lbs larger than before (285), plus my knee, which has a old ACL surgery, has now worn-out to near bone-on-bone, plus another planned ACL surgery. The weight has certainly made my knee far worse, far faster, so for the knee issues alone, I wish I'd done it 5 years ago. Sound familiar? My old insurance covered most of it, my current insurance has such poor coverage that I am essentially self-pay. I wanted to have surgery this summer, but my Dad (who is 50% loan/50% gifting me the money) is requiring a 3 month diet/exercise/supplement program for the money. So, I am looking at Thanksgiving.. Yes, I go round and round with the whole, if I can lose weight on my own, why surgery or if I can't keep it off, why bother with surgery. But, I was here 5 years ago and did not succeed. My two cents.
  19. What it will be like to be thin. I have been heavy my whole life. Or as far back as I can remember. I keep thinking how in the world will all this weight just dissapear. I see the before and after pics of other people who have lost weight. But I don't see that for myself. I try to imagine it. I certainly know that I will have skin left when all is said and done. How does every one else feel about this?

    Weight gain after 2-3 years?

I have to agree, I had to prove I tried to lose weight on several occasions before my insurance approved me.

Am I doing something wrong? What can I DO?
