I’m sad and I don’t know what to do.
SummerTimeGirl replied to NYCGirl_'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, congrats on your prior weight loss and sobriety!! Since altering your diet have you been tracking your food again? If not you may want to try that and go back to basics. Back to the way we're told to eat once we hit that "regular food" stage. Not sure what you were told but for me that means 800 cals a day, 50 grams or less of total carbs, 60-75 grams of protein, 64 oz of water and the carbs you do eat should be from things like fruits/veggies/whole grains. You don't know how many times I thought I was doing everything right until I actually started counting/using the food tracker app again. Since Oct 25th I've been in a stall. Thought I had my crap together and doing things right until I sent my nutritionist my food logs to ask for help and suggestions and she pointed out what I was doing wrong and where I was inconstant. So I made the corrections and things are already improving and it's only been a week. Anyway, I too suggest the therapist but maybe also the nutritionist to help you get on track again. She or he would have the best suggestion on how to help you get going again. Best of luck!!! -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
greenchilegoddess replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Weirdest NSV of the week: went back for a follow up with my PCP for something I went in for two weeks before surgery, and after the nurse entered in my weight she got an error because the drop was so large so quickly that she needed a supervisor to come make sure the numbers weren't added incorrectly, and flag my file. Once I caught on to why she was so confused and concerned, I explained about surgery and everyone was VERY relieved. -
Anyone Ever Cancel Their Surgery? I Did... Not Sure How I Feel
You Are My Sunshine replied to You Are My Sunshine's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks. I haven't heard from my doctor at all. One thing I do want to mention as an FYI, or in case anyone is interested is that my psych asked me a question. She asked if I'd be happy staying the same weight that I am, or losing 10-20 pounds since my eating patterns have shifted a little. But generally, can I be happy at this weight. Because I think we both know that, barring some miracle, I'm likely to not lose the amount of weight I would if I had the procedure. I'd have to research the meds that were mentioned earlier (that's not really a road I've traveled as of yet). So I'm still thinking about that. Honestly, NO. I'm a big girl. I don't mind being big, to some extent, but I'm uncomfortable in my skin with how I am now. Eight years ago I was able to lose a nice chunk of weight, but I can't say that's possible right now for me. Age, stress, hormones - you name it, are really working against me. But, being also not sure about the surgery, I'm in a limbo of sorts, which is almost more depressing and frustrating. It was advised that I touch base back with the bariatric program in a month or so, or after the holidays to kind of gauge where things are. But honestly I don't even know what they would want me to do at this point (start over in the program, etc.) and it sound exhausting to me to do that. -
Scheduled for Jan 12th and getting cold feet. Is VSG "worth it"?

I’m 13 months out and would do it again in a heartbeat. I’m down 172 lbs and less than half the woman I once was. It is a lot of hard work still, so don’t just assume you’ll get the surgery and the weight will fall off without you having to do anything. But if you’re willing to put in the effort it can be life changing. -
Almost 3 weeks out. Am I doing something wrong?
vikingbeast replied to Prisci1608's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some people are just slow losers. But everybody and every body is bound by the CICO (calories in calories out) equation. If you are eating in a caloric deficit, which literally every post-op bariatric patient (regardless of surgery) is, you are going to lose weight. It just may not be leaps and bounds. And for those who lost a ton of weight quickly, a lot of that is water weight and many of us stalled after our body recalculated its hydration needs, whereas many slow losers lose steadily. It. Will. Come. Off. -
I did spend a few thousand dollars on a treadmill. It's very steady and that's really important to me. Also, they delivered it and set it up for me. I am not mechanically inclined. 1. You get what you pay for, although I wouldn't get a peloton because then you're just getting a name that's trendy (although my friend loves her peloton bike because she enjoys the classes) 2. Make sure the treadmill has at least a 50lb cushion between your highest (or current) weight and the weight limit of the treadmill. 3. Make sure you get a pad for underneath if you plan to put it above another room or you live in an apartment. It will help lower the sound, especially when you are heavier and also if you are jogging/running 4. Put it in front of a TV if possible if you find exercise like the treadmill dull, because otherwise you're likely to just stop out of boredom

I think that is awesome weight loss but to ease your mind I have seen several people on these boards who were actually slow losers (lost less than you) and even they eventually reached their goal. I think it was catwoman who continued to lose for two years. So as long as you are following your plan and the weight trend is down try not to worry too much about the speed of the loss.

To be fair and to clear what seems to be a ton of misconceptions in America about the Mini Gastric Bypass / One Anastomosis Bypass / Omega Loop Bypass, there's nothing 'almost as good as' about the MGB compared to RNY. More weight loss, better resolution of comorbidities, and fewer complications. Higher risk of malnutrition long-run (like duodenal switch patients) and a risk of reflux, though much lower than sleeve.

I’m sad and I don’t know what to do.

I agree with @ShoppGirl. You may have transferred your addiction back to food. Seeking a therapist who specialises or is experienced with bariatric patients, disordered eating &/or eating addictions. Your surgeon should be able to recommend someone to work with you. Unfortunately many anti depressant meds increase your appetite too so you they could be adding to your battle. Congratulations on being a year sober. All the best. Sorry, just read your response above & I’m glad you’re seeking help from therapists all ready. Definitely see a dietician. Sometimes little things have a, big impact on losing or gaining. -

I am only 8 months out so I can’t speak about regain but if you haven’t seen a nutritionist yet you could learn some things that will help you to lose weight. Is the doctor saying they won’t do a revision unless something is wrong?? I was told that they do revision because of heartburn even if you aren’t that overweight. Have you considered seeing a bariatric therapist? Maybe since you experienced addiction transfer and you are sober, you transferred back to food again and need to get to the root of the addiction before you will be able to lose the weight. -

I got RNY 04/2017. HW: 226, LW: 150, CW: 195 I did all of the right things until I had transfer addiction in 2019 and started drinking daily. It escalated and I was a full blown alcoholic. I have now been sober a year and I’m depressed. I’m almost back to my pre surgery weight, I’m working my butt off to lose the weight and it’s not coming off. I never feel well and my chest always hurts. I always have heartburn and I’m always hungry. I need help so I went to a new surgeon the other day about a potential revision and she wants me to see a nutritionist and get a endoscopy. I got my results from my upper GI testing today and there’s NOTHING wrong. I feel like everything is wrong and I’m not okay. I’m on antidepressants, I’m now sober, I’m exercising and eating properly but I’m still fat and I hate myself so much for it. I feel like the biggest failure at 30 years old and it makes me so sad. Has anyone else been able to lose regain?- 9 replies

According to my scale which I weigh myself weekly just before my shower I’ve lost 22lbs since my surgery. Yesterday I went for my 6 week post op visit. Keep in mind your fully dressed for weigh in and according to my doctor he doesn’t deduct clothing. With that said I weighed in at 175lbs which I was a bit upset. According to the doctor my weight at surgery was 189lbs and now my weight at 6 week post op now 175lbs is only giving a 14lb weight loss. Then I asked the doctor if weighing myself weekly just before I shower, is this more acute than being weighed at a late afternoon appointment, fully clothed, eating stage 4 diet requirements and drinking water. My doctor said my weight at home is likely acute providing what type of scale I’m using. I’m using a Fit Aria. This is a very good scale.

I agree with adding a flavor packet to your water... I also like the Walmart brand, as well as the Starburst brand pink and blue flavors. You can get those at a Walgreens and Walmart. But your weight loss sounds fine to me! Don't Panic! -
When does weight loss start?
NovaLuna replied to Angelina1210's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some people hold onto the IV fluid from their surgery for slightly longer. You may just be one of those people. I'd say give it another four or five days before stressing about it. Your weight loss should pick back up then. -
I just had the gastric sleeve done on December 10th and I lost 1.8 lbs. Is this normal? I don’t want to compare myself to others but I’m concerned. Is there anything I should be doing? I can only consume liquids and I struggle with that. When does the weight loss start? 😏

I think 20 lbs in 3 weeks is fantastic! I was not anywhere close to that and the surgery team thinks I'm doing great at 3 months/35 lbs down. You didn't gain the weight overnight and you won't lose it overnight

Went for preop appointment…still didn’t see MD.
mrsjo posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So here I am, 6 months in, lost 10% of my weight and going to my final preop appointment. On the edge of my seat because after all this time I finally get to meet and discuss with my surgeon. Hubby asks me on the way in “what happens if you still don’t see her”.? I tell him well then I’m done with this place. Guess what??? Still didn’t see her!!!!I weighed in, met with the NP, signed paperwork and went over some surgery stuff, met with dietician, got vitamin samples the whole thing. After 3 1/2 hours I still hadn’t see her and had to leave to be back for work. Now what? What do I do? Give up on this office? Start somewhere else? Or thrown in the bypass towel altogether and keep forging ahead??? Very upset and frustrated now. -
I echo everyone's sentiments! Be Proud of yourself and this journey. You have lived your life at your high weight and decided enough was enough and set on your trek. Your trek is not mine, nor anyone else's. You are doing great for YOU!

Joining Weight Watchers after Gastric Sleeve surgery.
calicakes replied to calicakes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey, OP here. Congrats to everyone. I lost the majority of my weight while on WW. I rejoined again 1 week before Covid hit( March 2020). I was so stressed and depressed that I put on 10lbs. I've lost it since and even more. I started at 290, I'm now 185. I haven't reached " goal weight" since my sugery, but I'm ok with it. I'd like to lose 20 more, and I hope I do. I'm not obsessed with it. WW makes me too obsessed, counting points, worried about my next meal. Now I try to practice intuitive eating. -

It looks like you’re doing great! It is part of my plan for continued weight loss to join WW when I get closer to goal and need more encouragement and accountability. I also plan on following my dietitian’s macros instead of WW if they don’t match up. Bravo to you for finding a sensible solution that works for you! -
Joining Weight Watchers after Gastric Sleeve surgery.
GradyCat replied to calicakes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just joined it yesterday, the Digital-only version. I was doing fine until COVID, then gained some weight 20+ pounds and I finally just got it off but I think the "extreme" diet I was on didn't set well with my health, so I thought I'd try something more balanced, normal, and healthy. I have my concerns/fears/doubts, but I'll give it a try. I'm still trying to navigate the whole "Personal Points" thing. I wish you great success. -

I lost 23 pounds the first month and I was heavier then you. 20 pounds is a fantastic amount of weight and is on the higher side especially with your starting weight. Unrealistic expectations for the surgery are common because of the show 'My 600 Pound Life' but your starting weight was less than half of theirs and thus your weight loss isn't going to seem as significant, but you're on track and doing great. I had the same unrealistic expectations and you'll have to work on lowering your expectations to be more realistic with your weight loss or else you're constantly going to be beating yourself up thinking that you're failing when, in fact, you're not only on track, but ahead of most people at the same point in time. Put this into perspective: You lost almost 8% of your body weight... in less than a month! How is that failing? Be proud of yourself! You've done great thus far!
-
The more you have to lose the faster you lose to begin. 20lbs is great. If anyone tells you differently punch them in the nose (not really of course). As @catwoman7 said the people on My 600lb Life have a lot more weight to lose than you - like more than double. So you should expect their initial weight loss rate to be more than double yours. But if you watch that show you’ll notice that as they lose weight, the loss Dr Now expects them to lose each month decreases. Glad you’ve done well & haven’t had any issues. And enjoy every pound you lose.

Only 9 pounds almost 4 weeks post op

I know everyone has their 2 cents, so here go mine; 1- water first! If you are at work that can be difficult. I downloaded an app to remind me to sip water every 5 minutes. 2- I love the great value black cherry water enhancer that walmart carries. Find a flavor you like if you are like me and can't stand water straight. 3- The chocolate body fortress whey isolate protein powder was my gift from God! I tolerated it well and drank 3 scoops a day. That's 90 grams of carbs a day just with them. I hope that helps. Congratulations on your successful surgery and stay motivated. The weight will come off.
