    Are others in your family overweight/obese?

    We have one side of the family that is solidly built, that's Dad's side. German heritage, and we're all tall, and pear shaped. Tend to be heavy, but getting to a BMI of 36 was really alarmingly heavy to me, way fatter than mum, dad or either of my sisters. My youngest sister is built like me, but just has never got beyond a BMI of (I'm guessing) 31 or 32. Mum's side is short and round, lol. My mum has never been obese, but her sister is, but she's a diabetic and has been since infancy, she got massive at one point but lost it all and never regained it. But her daughter, is very very big, probably a BMI of 45 or so. But those are the only two in our family. So I dont think I can blame genetics for my weight, it was much more poor lifestyle choices and lack of time that led to poor choices. Plus the common post pregnancy suddenly home looking after babies all day type weight gain.

    Suzzzie I can relate to your weight gain. I have not lost any weight in such a long time. I have gained just a little bit of weight and it is so hard to take off. I am not exercising so I know that is one of my problems. I do not choose all the right food. I like junk food too much especially chocolate. I am at a point now that I almost wish I did gastric bypass. I don't feel like I will ever get to my goal weight. I realize that the band is just a tool. I need a little butt kicking around here. I don't even look like I have really lost any weight. I can still fit into all my clothes from pre-surgery. I am down 40 pounds and that is it. I hope your puppy gets better. My two cats has or had a case of fleas and it seems they will never stop scratching.

  4. Hi I am new to all of this! I have battled my weight my whole life. I have lost weight gained it lost it again i am just so tired of this!!! Through my years of dealing with my weight I decided to go back to school and get a degree in nutrition (it's so much fun to be a chubby dietitian) so as you can imagine I no what to do to lose weight I just have such a hard time doing it. If someone told me that there was a magic pill I would take it!! So what I want to know is this worth it! Does it work? I know the science behind it all, but does it really work! I work at one of the local hosptials and the surgeons are having an info meeting this week and I just wonder if I should go. I have not talked about this with anyone in my life (my husband, sisters, friends etc) I feel like my god if I can't lose the weight who can. Sorry to have rambled I just would really like some help thanks for you time. Angela

    Is anyone NOT exercising???

    Well. I know you are not talking about me there, because as a rule, I don't give advice on band related matters. People who see the advice as harsh, tend to do so because of something lacking in their lives. Be it exercise, eating right, or following the band rules. It hits too close to home. It hurts them because they know that it could be true, that they are NOT doing whatever it is that is being talked about, and that is the cause of their weight gain / failure to lose / whatever. People then go one of two ways. They do something about it, or they do nothing but whine about why it is so tough. Why they can't. Why they are special. So yeah. Maybe the second sorts are better ignored by those who give fantastic advice. But how would one know what group they "asker" ends up in if they do hit the ignore button?

    SOOOO Discouraged...Please Help

    Don't worry, I was banded two days before you, lost 16 lbs during the pre-op diet and after surgery did one week of clear, and then one week of full liquids. I'm now into mushy foods and haven't looked at the scale since BEFORE I had surgery. I've done enough weight loss battles in my life to know I would experience weight gain after the liquid period and didn't want to feel "owned" by the scale anymore. I'll check the scale after a month or so, for now its do what I'm supposed to and things will play out accordingly. Don't let the scale be the ultimate judge, ESPECIALLY when you just entered the mushy phase. Good luck
  7. ummmm...i dont think that 20 lbs in 8 months is bad at all. I lost only 17 lbs the first year and a half. i started out at 218. i just kept reminding myself that if i keep following the rules of the band, i will eventually see the results. Finally, after all those long, long months, the scales started moving. I lost 25 lbs the next year, and today, i have lost 63 lbs, and I have 20 to goal. I think it is wayyyy too early to call yourself a failure. You need to give yourself and your body more time to work. Just a note...my weight loss has stalled at all of the same points where my weight GAIN stalled as i was getting bigger. My first weight jump was in my late teens/early 20's when i went from 115-145, my second was in my mid 20's when i went to 160's, then in my late thirties, i went to 200, then after i turned 30, 210's. I have plateau'd at 200, then i suddenly lost rapidly to 160's. i have stalled at 155. i am betting when i suddenly start losing again, i will plateau at 140-145, then i will lose to goal. did that make sense? did you spend a lot of time at your current weight at some time in your life?

I have seen posts where some have hormone fluctuations when they started losing weight and it caused some monthly issues,, so I was wondering if anyone who is post menopausal had more symptoms after or while losing weight? Estrogen is stored in fat so I figured I have been living off of that and that is why I haven't had any hot flashes and such since my hysterectomy.. The HRT brought them on, so I stopped taking it after 6 months.. not too mention the 47 lb weight gain during the 3rd and 6th month.

    What You wish you Knew

    I wish I knew . . . . . . some Protein shakes can taste horrible. I should have gotten a sample before I bought a very expensive barrel sized canister of Protein shake that has been gathering dust in my kitchen closet for six months now. . . . ready to drink Isopure clear shakes were tolerable to drink and helpful for protein intake directly after surgery since they fit in as a clear protein. . . . I did not realize logging all calories and protein on fitday.com would be so helpful during the early days. . . . I thought the journey really started when I was banded, but the help did not really come until after my second fill. I did not have realistic expectations of the unfilled portion in the early days where you are soooo hungry but can not eat anything much. I also did not realize that so many people had weightloss stalls (or some even gain)at this point. . . . I did not realize that weight loss comes in fits and starts. It was only easy and steady directly after surgery during the liquid phases. In general for me it looked more like this 202, 202, 201, 198, 202, 199, 202, 200, 199, 199, 198, 200, 198. I now have a rule that I don't change a ticker value unless I maintain a maximum weight for at least three days. . . . I didn't realize that plateaus can be easily broken if you know what to do, so I suffered a little more in the beginning than necessary. . . . I didn't realize that my TOM means an automatic weight gain(3-5 pounds in the beginning and 1-3 pounds now) that comes and goes in about a week. . . . I did not know that losing weight rapidly floods your body with hormones so that your TOM can be drastically worse than normal (not to mention that you can be verrrryyyy moody as well). However, six months out and I think I have stabilized somewhat. Perhaps the general tone sounds like complaints, but it is not. All of the good far, far, far outweighs the bad. If I listed all the good, I could go on for pages and pages. I love my band and I can not tell you how much better I look and feel at this stage of the game. Congratulations on selecting a most interesting journey and change in lifestyle.

    Psychiatric Medication

    I have been on Cymbalta (90 mg.)for about 1 1/2 years and I have struggled with weight gain, but also take trazadone at night too. This did't help my weight!
  12. I think it's a personal preference. I am 35 years old, 5"4' and was up to 222, but perfectly healthy. I am "big-boned" and hid my weight pretty well. My family has battled these issues and the yo-yo dieting all my life. I have watched it control their lives, and now the diseases have started for them. Like someone else said, diets only mean more weight gain in the long run. Every time I tried to lose, I would gain it back and then some. It was a battle every single day for me.......and I was just tired of fighting. I went through my closet yesterday and got rid of all of my size 14's. I was literally saying "buh-bye, I never have to see you again"!! And it's true, I no longer have to worry about getting back up anywhere near 200lbs. I will win the battle now.....$17,000 later, but worth every penny. And just think, in 6 years I will be done paying for it and still enjoying the rewards of it for years to come. I am so happy I made the decision to do this. It has changed my life tremendously. Now when I go to Dunkin Donuts FOR coffee, I don't even drool over the donuts, cuz they kill going down. That's a great thing, because my eating habits were becoming so unhealthy that I knew it would just snowball. Before having this surgery, had I walked into Dunkin Donuts hungry? I would have bought a dozen and ate most of them in my car and threw the box in a dumpster somewhere so no one would know. So really every circumstance is different. I think most people know whether the road they are on will eventually lead to destruction, and whether this is a solution to a very "LARGE" problem for them. So, to each their own. Whatever works!!!!!

    chest tightness

    I have the same problems, was banded on the 7th. I called the nurse regarding the pain, and breath shortness and I also have nausea. She said it was mostly from gas and bloating and that my weight gain. Almost 20 lbs. was due to the fluids and the gas I received during the surgery. Today a bit better, I think it's mostly gas and now my stomach is very empty and making loud noises. I walk around and that helps. But I'm still really tired. I have my 1 week appointment after surgery tomorrow. Hope I can get something for the nausea. I also got on the scale and I am down to 207.5 even though my stomach is bloated, you an see it, my arms and legs are thinner, looks very strange believe me. I look like a pumpkin on sticks LOL. I hope that boating goes away soon had to wear my ugly pants when I went out to the store today. UGGGGG. Also I have had a bit of diarrhea, it's horrible and smells even worse, have a metalic smell and my mouth tastes that way, I wonder if that's from the Protein shakes. It's pretty disgusting. Just hope I feel better soon. This is a bit rougher than I thought it would be. But since I am older than a lot of people here I chalk it up to being old LOL. Take care Pati

    OUCH!!!! it does hurt!!

    I'm right there with you. I stayed overnight in the hospital and was really glad I did. Just having the bed that did the lifting was such a help. And yes, I had plenty of pain and I don't regret one moment of it. Today, I am 1 week out. The pain and bloating were really bad for about 4 days, but I'm feeling better now. I'm just taking the medication at night - it really helps me sleep straight through. I think that perhaps the doctor put weights into my belly because I actually gained 7 pounds! No worries, I knew immediately that 7 pounds in 2 days isn't real weight gain. Just bloating. Those pounds are gone now and took several of it's friends with it. All in all, I've just laid low for the last week. Spent a lot of time in my recliner chair with a pillow watching the Olympics. I am now actually able to spend some time at my computer and am feeling like I am really on my road to recovery.
  15. Hello all, My name is Lisa and I live in Brooklyn, NY. I am considering lap band surgery and I wanted to hear about other's experiences on the process. I lost 100 pounds on my own 2002-2003 and have unfortunately gained ALL of it back in the past two years. :Banane37: This new weight gain is causing many health problems and my doctor has only one answer - lose weight. Which is annoying in itself (I'm sure you all can relate). One of my initial concerns is that I live alone and I am wondering about the recovery time and how others did it if they were alone. I also wanted to just commiserate and maybe get local referrals. I have been VERY hesitant to do this surgery - but I feel that I am too young to be feeling the way I do and feel that it would be a nearly impossible feat to lose the weight on my own.     HELP!!! Im not losing...

    I know several people with PCOS personally, although I don't have it myself. It seems that PCOS, insulin resistance and being significantly overweight all go hand-in-hand in every case. What I am not sure about is which came first, the chicken or the egg. Does being overweight lead to insulin resistance and PCOS in people that are predisposed to developing it? Or is PCOS the primary issue and weight gain and insulin resistance are side effects? In my friends that do have it, they can go on extreme diets, exercise an incredible amount and only have a very small impact on weight. It is almost as if traditional weight loss methods are minimally effective when PCOS is an issue. Does that also seem to be the case for those of you who have it?

    Okay Sades, sounds like you and me need to kick each other's butts. Let's get to the gym, okay? I had been planning this for a few days but keep delaying it. Let's work out tomorrow, no excuses. Are you in? So I went to get a fill. I love my doc. He didn't even bat an eye at my weight gain, said I was doing great. Even the nurse. She asked me what do you weigh? (she wasn't the one who did the weighing in) and I said I wasn't going to tell her! Well, of course she can look right on the chart but didn't say a thing. It's amazing what ten pounds looks like. I can't believe the difference in my body. I want to get it off!

    HELP!!! Im not losing...

    Shamrock... PCOS stands for Poly sistic ovarian syndrome. Us who have it do not have a normal matabolism. Our bodies are insulin resistent. It is nothing that you can develop after surgery. Its just a "disease" that a lot of women have that causes weight gain, skin tags, certain discoloartion of the skin, and some even have extra testostresomes or how ever you spell it, lol which can cause hair to grow in weird areas, like the face. Also your period could be irregular. But i was diagnosed awhile ago and tried taking met formin for mine, but it made me very sick to my stomach so i stopped. My doctor says my PCOS is the reason for most of my weight gain. But who knows.....
  19. No, you should not do a liquid diet. I didn't need to do a preop liquid diet at all and my BMI was 41. the post op diet was so easy to follow because I had sooo much restriction from surgery. I have done liquid diets in the past and they are wicked. They are hard to follow and for me usually results in huge binges and weight gain instead of loss. Have you met with your sugeon yet? If not, I would not try to lose weight untill you see him. Qualify for surgery and then if you want, try a liquid diet. You can always cancel the surgery once you qualify, but it is alot harder to qualify for surgery if your BMI drops below 40.
  20. My doc waits 8 weeks post op to do the first fill. I was like you, very hungry and kind of worried about weight gain. Hang in there. You really do need the healing time before your first fill.     How Much Have You Lost So Far?

    Long2bthin...I am preparing myself that I will gain when I have my surgery. I have never been in the hospital that I did not gain. Ticks me off that have to go through it and come out weighing more. Your 8lb weight gain is not unusual and b/4 you know it, it will be gone and you can continue on your weight loss journey.

    Unfill and good news!

    You know, I've been really worried about that. I'm almost at a point of being afraid to gain weight. I guess because I worked so hard to lose it. I don't think I had the time to psych myself about the weight gain since this wasn't a planned pregnancy. I'm on the scale every morning just checking to see if I've gained anything yet. I only gained 22 pounds with my first child...of course I was 300 pounds at the time and probably didn't NEED to gain anything.

    Unfill Question

    well my doc doesnt advocate the liquid diet after fills, he just says to be careful, so no, I didnt do a liquid diet at all after my recent .2ml unfill. But I found it to be like a fill. Small immediate effect,then about a week later, I noticed how much easier it was to eat, how much hungrier I was and how many more really healthy foods (as opposed to sliders) I could eat. None of which led to weight gain thank goodness. I dont know why I got so tight, one of those things I guess. PMT, plane flight etc all happening round the same time.
  24. I'm from the US and I said yes to high Protein and low-carb, but this is by no means Atkins variety plan. The goal is to make sure you get enough lean Proteins first, eat healthy fruits and vegetables second and carbs are fine for whatever is left. Carbs are not restricted in that I can have them, but they should be of good quality. Whole grains, potatoes, rice, etc. are fine but they should be healthy. The carb restriction is really more for slider foods such as chips, cakes, etc . . . which I feel is perfectly reasonable. Because we have limited capacity, I think it is well and good that we focus on whole foods that are healthy and nutrient rich and limit those things that are highly processed. I know that being an American I have heard the proponents of low carb everything extolling the diet virtues in my ears for many years now. It was the low fat or sugar free craze before that. I do not feel that I am taken in with that. Too much low carb or sugar free or fat free products can still cause weight gain easily if you take in more than you burn. I think sometimes the low-carb debate is lost in our definitions of a carb. Whole fruits and vegetables are always going to be healthier for me than cakes, Cookies or chips hands down. The whole protein first, followed by fruits and vegetables and carbs for last rings true in practice as well. I do know that I love potatoes and if I eat a baked potato first, I will not have room for anything else. In real life, I take a bite of this, a bite of that, etc but try to keep a healthy balance.
  25. Did anyone gain weight pre op?? I was weighed in May, and I've gained 10lbs since then. My surgery is in Sept. and I meet with my surgeon tomorrow, and I'm so nervous he will turn me down. I have been working really hard, but I still gained..help....
