I am currently on day 2 of my pre op diet... It sucks lol I am on 2 weeks... Surgeon says it depends on your BMI... My BMI is like 55, People on lower BMI have 1 week and there are those who dont even have to do a pre op diet just a liquid diet the day before surgery. but yea like someone already said every surgeon is different. Some surgeons allow at least 1 small meal along with the protein shakes a day, Some are strictly just liquid. So if you only have to do 7 days you are lucky in my opinion -

How soon after surgery did you risk trying raw veggies?

Lots of great advice above. My plan allowed for introducing fresh fruits & veggies around the 8 week mark. I started with butter lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, etc. Softer veggies that seemed "safe" to me. Thankfully, I tolerated them well, and was able to move pretty quickly to salads and such. I am 6 months post-op now and have not had any issues with any of the fruits or veggies I've had, raw or cooked, with the exception of mashed potatoes which do NOT stay down, even when thinned and in very small amounts so I just skip them. It is very much trial & error, as every person is different. But always follow your plan, its there for a reason! -

Yeah friends on here used to be a bigger thing years ago when there was a chat room. The entire community was closer knit than it is now. I miss the way BP used to be. I'm sorry to hear about your band troubles. They sound much like mine. The second process is coming along nicely. I started the process in February and I will be cleared for surgery after my dietitian appointment next week. Then my case goes before review, then I get an appointment with the surgeon and a tentative surgery date. It's looking like some time in May. GERD is under control at the moment due to Protonix and I've not gained any weight since band removal, I've actually lost a bit. Best wishes! -

I am wondering the same thing. I am 7 months post op and have hovered around 295 pounds for about 5 weeks. I am down 98 pounds total. I hope it is just a stall because I would like to see another 10 pound loss. -

I hope OP is reaching out to a crisis line. I will say that although I was never suicidal, I did have a lot of regret for the first few months. I was hungry all the time and every time I ate I was in pain. Nothing tasted good in the first month or so. After about 5 months, I felt really glad I had done it. It took me a while to get adjusted. Find a support group if you can, and a therapist who is trained in bariatric issues. Reach out to your surgery center. If you PM me I can get you in touch with a Zoom support group that meets twice a week.

I know there has been lots of posts about stalls and here is mine. So for the last 8 weeks I have been bouncing around the same weight 71-72 kg today I even went up to 72.5 I am 8 months Post op and have lost 30% of my starting weight. Is this stall or has my body said nope not loosing any more weight? my original goal was 70kg but I still have quiet a bit of fat on my tummy so I would like to get that off and reset my goal to 60kg . I am a shift worker and don't get great sleep and I have found in the past this makes it very hard to loose weight. now I sound like I am making excuses again like I did pre surgery but prior to surgery when I took several weeks leave I always dropped a couple of kilos just from having a better sleep pattern but it went straight back on once I returned to work. but to the topic what do you all think and what are your experiences at this point in your journey?

I lost 50 lbs prior to surgery. I ate lower carb, higher protein, and counted calories - about 1700 a day. I did throw a few food funerals towards the end! You don't need to eat mushy foods prior to surgery. You will have enough of that in the weeks after surgery. Giving up sweets is really hard. I am 6 months post surgery and I find I eat some sweets - more than I need now. Sweets like cake are "slider foods" meaning you can still eat them when you are full on protein. It's the bane of my existence when I eat with my family on vacation. I try to just have a few bites of a dessert, not the whole thing, and I try not to have dessert every day we're out. I also try to keep the rest of my day high protein/low carb. It's not about perfection; just 80-90% of the time making the right choices. -

I had cooked veggies at two weeks (lightly sauteed), raw veggies around 3-4 weeks, and salad ... I have tried a number of times, and it's still hard for me at 6.5 months out. I eat it, but it feels uncomfortable every time. I will probably have it for lunch today, but I will focus mostly on the protein and the veggies, not so much the lettuce - that's the hardest for me. Try tomatoes, squash/zucchini, cucumbers, etc. Those are probably easiest at first -

I'm at five weeks post-op, and the only craving I'm having so far is for green salad. I don't officially start regular foods until next week, but I'm perishing for crisp lettuce, cucumber, radishes, carrots . . . (oh man, I'm making myself hungry here, lol). I'm wondering how other folks tolerated small amounts (1/4 cup) of salad relatively early on. -

It takes a few weeks of continuous use to get addicted to pain killers. Most will only give you enough for 2-3 days. if you can do without, perfect. but everyone handles pain differently. I handle it poorly and i keep pain killers stocked up just incase. I rarely use them but its nice to know they are there if i need it. -

I was just supposed to eat healthy (which honestly, I already did) and keep my calorie intake at around 2300 (which clearly, at well over 300 lbs, I didn't). The dietitian didn't restrict any specific kind of food, but on the other hand, eating more than the occasional sweet treat wouldn't really be healthy eating. I lost about 40 lbs during the six-month pre-op diet (required by my insurance company) and another 17 lbs during the two-week liquid diet (required by my surgeon). -

Water bottle, slide on shoes, unflavored protein powder, chicken stock/broth, sugar free jello, a binder or folder to keep all of your surgery info in, baby spoons, Gas X, protein water - to sip or make Popsicles with. Make a vitamin & supplement schedule so you know what to take when - most people can not tolerate taking all at once and you must take iron and calcium a few hours apart for them to be effective. A pad of paper or journal to write your foods in - so if you try something and it doesn't work for you you have a record of it. I haven't had my surgery yet but from everything I have researched and asked about these things seem to be the most important in the first few weeks. I hope this helps

I don’t think it’s gas it feels like soft and then goes away a couple hours later it’s weird like a cloud but 🤣 that’s the first thing I thought about but it never was gas pain when it first started it was weird like an inflamed cloud but nah it goes away without needing to fart or anything I just drink water and wait a few hours it’s soft and puffy happens at least two to three times every two weeks but I’ll see if I can message the hospital to talk to my nurse ☺️ thank you all for responding

My dietician put me on a 1,300 calorie diet with 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fat. I only had to lose 5 pounds to get a surgery date. Honestly, I ate what I wanted as an evening snack every other night. My healthy snacks were Greek yogurt with fruit, low fat cookies with green tea, or one piece of string cheese with almonds (counted out). I wasn’t ready to sacrifice ALL of my favorite foods. I viewed the diet as a sort of “practice” for eating healthy, tracking my food and drinking more water. You will give up everything and lose a significant amount of weight when you do the two week liquid diet before surgery (which I am doing right now). Maybe you should ask your dietician if you’re supposed to follow the diet 24/7. -

Hi all! I still do not know which surgery I am getting as of yet, as my first dietician appt was last week. She has me on a protein first diet... about 1500 calories a day etc to start getting used to the way I will be eating post surgery. No date yet for surgery,. btw. Assuming June or July. How many of you had to do this and what did you find eating works good for you? Ive been watching a lot of Youtube videos on what they ate before and after. Im doing a lot of mushy high protein foods already. Refried beans with sour cream, soups, tons of eggs, etc. But for snacking I was told to always eat protein first!! Im only a week in and I have not had 1 sweet yet! The most sugar I had, was a thing of cottage cheese last night with a teeny bit of strawberry topping and an apple with cinnamon sugar. That is it. I crave sweets so much. This is so hard. What worked for you guys in the sweets department pre op?? Did you still lose before your surgery?? I dont NEED to lose before surgery. ,but they dont want me to gain either. My dietician told me eat sweets in moderation, and obviously I know that... but if its eat protein first, where do I fit in a slice of cake once in awhile?? LOL Can any of you give me some good food/snack ideas/ plans that worked for you pre op?? As Im writing this, my snack tonight is a cup of vegetable beef soup that is high in protein.... Is that bad?? lol Pinterest has been a help too.

So many great suggestions! For the hospital, I absolutely agree with the very long phone charging cord, 10 feet is best. If you can get a folding squatty potty, that might help with constipation. I also did not like feeling like a patient, so as soon as they let me get out of my gown 24 hours postop, I wore shorts and a T-shirt the rest of the hospital stay. I agree with the timer, I use my cell phone timer. I also agree with the shakes. Have a few on hand, different brands, but do not stock pile. After a few weeks, it has been so helpful to have small microwavable dishes when I pack my lunch. They are actually Glass containers with snap on lids, that are meant for homemade baby food. They are around 5 ounces each, and perfectly hold my lunch that I pre-portion each Sunday. Also go in microwave/dishwasher. I like to feel that I am still fitting in, so I use a bread and butter plate at each meal, along with a smaller fork. I also use one of my regular kitchen glasses, and measured how high 8 ounces of liquid goes to. Good luck!

yes - it'll go away. I never really had pain to speak of, just discomfort - but after two or three weeks it was pretty much gone, as I recall..

I went through exactly the same thing so I know first hand how you are feeling. First of all reach out to someone who can help you with the suicidal thoughts get some counselling asap. Gosh I was that bad I was bawling to my mother that I now wanted a stomach transplant 😳. I felt awful I wanted to die I spent 6 weeks curled up in a ball on my sisters couch. I did the old but I wasn't that big blah blah blah. What you are going through is grief and you will go through all the stages some more than once. When I started loosing weight I would tell people I would gladly have the weight back just to feel normal again. I totally get how you feel. Hormones have a lot to do with this I was perimenopausal and ended up on patches as I said to my Dr I can't deal with both meaning the effects of surgery and menopause, so that helped alot. It gets better trust me on this. I cried multiple times a day for weeks, I didn't go to work thank God I had plenty of leave saved up but going back home and back to work helped me get back into my routine and gave me something else to to think about. On your path to recovery the good days will slowly out number the bad days. I couldn't talk about surgery without crying for months. I would tell people it should be outlawed all sorts of crazy stuff. So now I am 8 months post op and feel so much better. I am 35 kilos down and have come to the realisation that I wouldn't have lost the weight without the surgery, yes I went through a stage of if only a stuck to the pre op changes I made I wouldn't have had to have surgery... But I can't say this enough and you are probably thinking yeah right what do you know it's worse for me but I do know and it will get better just be gentle on yourself try to do things you enjoy spend time with supportive people who will look after you when you need it. You are not alone it gets better, how long will it take you I don't know it took me 6 months and I think when I realised I could eat and drink "normally" again I got better quicker. Now I am fighting another battle but that's a story for another day. Love your restriction while you have it. Get your protein in stay hydrated. I'm almost a week post op and still have the pain in my chest and a Lil pain still in my abdomen, does this ever go away????
