  1. I've been reading some of the threads and I'm concerned and confused. I had my surgery 3 weeks ago and I've been following my diet just as I was told. But I have noticed that I tend to forget to drink my liquids slowly. I'm afraid I'm might of done something wrong because I feel heartburn. It doesn't feel too bad and it does go away after a while. After reading about slippage I'm afraid that might of happened. My first filling is set for June 18, that's when I'm planning to tell my doctor about my concerns. Has anyone experience this without it being slippage?

    Feeling not so hot

Does anyone know if u can take any over the country meds? I'm really sick with a cold and can't stand it! I'm 4 weeks post op.

    Brown rice

Almost three years out and rice still doesn't agree with me. What does your plan say? Rice can be especially hard on incision lines and smaller stomachs and pouches because of the way it expands. I tried to avoid all foods I felt addicted to in order to break those habits and eliminate the psychological hold food had over me for long term success. So Depressed

For one week do not eat anything except meat and vegetables. Eggs for breakfast and up to four cups of vegetables. It's the only thing that works for me. Once I am detoxed from carbs and sugar then I am good. If you do this for a couple weeks not only will you lose the six pounds but probably more
  5. Hi all.. I thought I'd share a link to a video in my YouTube channel from 2 days post op. I've been recording my story for a couple of weeks on my channel (you can google "Trisha's Sleeve Story) to find me. I'm only 4 days post op, so I'll be adding videos as my story continues! http://youtu.be/5aHSJ2mj5I0

    Really Annoying!

People that don't know what we have to go though just to get approved for WLS and how hard it is after surgery. To bad they can't live in our shoes for a week to see what it's like Surgery Anniversary 7/30/12
  7. Starting to freak out a little here! I am exactly 2 weeks post op today, have been given the green light to eat new foods and I feel like I could eat and eat and eat! I read on here that when I started solid protein I would finally feel restriction. Well, not the case. I have a chicken leg (which I was sure to chew very well) and it went down just the same as pre surgery. Granted, I am eating less, but the only thing that gives me any feeling of restriction. Is cottage cheese so far. I even ate a little bit of a muffin today and felt fine and wanted more! What is wrong with me?!
  8. I don't want to discourage, but cravings are super hard to get rid of! It's like in your stage, you want what you can't have! I was really hungry too. Here's what I did. I bought a whole chicken, an onion, carrots, celery and made some chicken broth by cooking it all together. Then I took the meat off one thigh, a small amount of the veggies and blended them really well and stirred them back into the broth. It made the broth soooo yummy! About 2 weeks post op I added a little instant potatoes until they were super runny and ate it with a fork so I only got what stayed on the tines. It saved me! PS... I added unflavored protein powder too!
  9. So I start the Optifast diet in just a few days and I am not looking forward to it at all. I heard it does not taste very good and you feel lousy while on it. Surgery is on 10/29 so I know I have to drink it but I don't want to. Since I only have about a week of normal eating left, I have to admit I am eating everything I can get my hands onto.
  10. I have had a really hard time managing my diabetes (type 2). My A1c climbed to over 14 and now is back under 10 and going down, but I had an eye appointment this morning, and moderate retinopathy was found in my left eye. It's not serious enough to require treatment, but I do worry very much about the damage long-term high blood sugar levels have done to my eyes and the rest of my body. Improving my diabetes is second only to improving mobility as a motivator for having RNY in the spring. My main worry in this process is my depression. I have had pretty serious depression for most of my life. I have been in the best place in my adult life over these last 18 months, which is by far the longest stretch I haven't been in despair. There have been some low periods, but I've been able to come out of them more quickly and manage through them. I have the best combination of medications I have been on and have a good therapist and psychiatrist for medication management. Coming up for air like this is what is enabling me to envision a better future and start the path toward surgery. However, I am worried about relapse. When I am very depressed, I devote what very little energy I have to work, and self-care becomes a mighty struggle . Exercise or moving at all is sporadic at best, and anything more than opening a package to prepare a "meal" (even microwaving) is often too much (which leads to things like an A1c of 14). I understand that many people experience depression after surgery, and that was in fact one of the first things my surgeon told me at the consult. I am very concerned about going down the hole and what will happen if I can't care for myself in the way I will need to. Right now, in preparation for surgery in the spring, I am eating three relatively healthy meals, taking my vitamins, keeping a food diary, drinking fluids, exercising, even cooking a little, and things are going well...it's like a different world. I'm not sure what will happen if I become depressed again. I am really working on mindfulness and a meditation practice to keep me grounded through tough times, but I do not know if that will be enough. If anyone else has had similar struggles, how are you coping?

    Started Soft Foods Today

Hi. I’m on puréed foods (sleeved July 10th). If something is going to come back up it’s usually within a couple (two) minutes. This morning it was my pills. Last week it was eggs - but I retried the eggs and they have agreed with me since.
  12. Just wondering if you always get offered a fill @ 4 weeks?? How do they know if you need one or do they just give you one?
  13. I'm new on here and was searching for people with advice. I have heard tons of good and bad stories and my surgery is scheduled only a week away, so I need advice The sooner the better please!
  14. My surgery has been moved up to 8/11 (in just a couple of weeks.) I was waiting for the sleep study and the surgeon's office got me one on this Friday night. I am stunned, excited, scared, confused and feeling like I have a lot to learn between now and then. I thought I had a few months to procrastinate and now Wham-O. I'm thinking I'll be ready and the sooner the better. Bring it on!

    Very Excited about my journey!

I have so much going on besides waiting to have my surgery in November. I don't want to wish my life away but I am a little impatient. We have a Disney trip the end of October so I guess that could be my "Last Supper" time before getting banded. I have to get thru psch evalution, dietician, and the other slu of tests. The next couple of weeks will be slammin'. Life is good...

    Excessive Gas

Sorry that you are still in pain as far as the gas goes. I had mine done on the 12th and I am 4 days post op. My gas has subsided a lot but I take my gas x 2 of them three times a day and I walk tons I even get on the treadmill. You can try beano or any over the counter liquid antacids I usually buy the one from CVS it's cherry flavor and that helps tons too. also the the liquid lortab that should have been prescribed to you helps a lot as well for pain. I hope that you find relief soon

Help Calories, Carb and Fat Intake

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. So essentially, the approach is not counting calories, carbs and fats during the "Weight Loss" phase. Eventually after several months you will slide into the "Maintenance" phase, and the approach in that phase is different and you can go back to counting calories, carbs and fats.

    Recovery time?

I was not one of those people who bounced right back and went out shopping two days after surgery, although after everything I read I thought I would be able to do just that. In reality I had some pretty major pain going on. I was scheduled to take only three days off work and had to make it a full week. I work at a school and I had to do two lunch duties in a row. After an hour standing on my feet and wiping tables I would be in so much pain..It would take everything I had to walk back down the hallway to my classroom without crying. That lasted a couple of weeks. Now, everything is fine and I am thrilled with my decision to be banded. Talk with your instructors up front, ask them what will happen if you need to take time out and get off your feet. Do you have to do manicures as well? Perhaps you can do that while you are recovering.
  20. Hi everyone! I'm getting the band next week and have been trying Protein shakes to get used to them. Has anyone ever been allergic to the powder? I had a funny skin reaction over the weekend and it lasted a few days. I narrowed it down to a few things but one of the things new was the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein Powder. I didn't have one yesterday or today and my skin is getting better but I'm afraid to try it again to see if it was the protein! LOL  Any suggestions?
  21. Last week, I started my liquid diet in preparation for my surgery on 6/24 at 7:30am. I am a teacher and normally teachers have summers off but I usually work for the majority of the summer. This summer I prioritized my health and declined a $5,000 piece of cake teaching gig, all because my surgery date would interfere w the job dates. I also lined my parents up to watch my kids, friends to help be chauffeurs to and from my kids sporting activities. And I have been managing a good exercise routine and I have lost 18 lbs on the liquid diet! So I had all my boxes checked and was ready for surgery when my surgeon called me personally. However, he called to say he was sick and could not do my surgery tomorrow!!! . He and I were both relieved I hadn't done the bowel prep yet but I am completely disappointed! He said he would not be able to do it at all this week but that I am a priority! Humph! I basically had a pity party for myself all day and now I'm in bed but can't sleep. Still crashing from the news. Ugh, since when do surgeons get sick?! LOL. Best wishes to all who are still able to go in tomorrow and this week! I will update as soon as I know when my surgery will actually happen. Bummed out ????????????????
  22. I swear I must be the slowest looser on the planet. I've lost about 25 lbs. in about 4 months, so that averages to about 6 pounds per month. It gets frustrating when I see others drop it more quickly, but I know that any loss is a good loss! Anyway, today I finally have officially less than 100 lbs. to loose! It isn't a huge goal to meet or anything but it makes me feel better. My next big personal goal is to be less than 200. Can't wait for that. I know I could do things to loose faster, but I don't really want to cut any foods completely out (unless the band doesn't tolerate it, that is). I know me and I won't stick to something like that long term. So I've been following the "everything in moderation" approach and making good choices over "bad" where possible. I'm happy with what I'm getting out of it, mainly because I seem to be dropping more inches than pounds. I've already gone down several sizes, so that is nice. I know my weight loss will jump start when I am out of this stinking cast and can exercise again! Only 2 more weeks!
  23. I had a fill 6 weeks ago and was totally fine. I woke up last night coughing and throwing up. I can't keep anything down. Could it be possible that I am now too tight?
  24. That doesn't sound right. I'd get yourself to the doctor pronto. I had a c-section with my youngest son and was much heavier than I am now and it cut right through the fattest part of the abdomen. They put a drain in because they wanted to make sure it healed from the inside out but that drain was still gone and I was healed within 2 *weeks*. .
  25. I was banded on November 4th and had a hematoma about 1 month out. It never really healed but got a lot better. About 4 weeks ago I was out cleaning the garage and noticed in the after noon the port area was sensitive and swollen. 2 weeks ago It started draining with bodily fluids and a little bit of blood. The doc said keep it clean and let it drain. It has been draining till about 3 days ago and was all good. Today after changing out the brakes on my car the scar filled up again and then later on opened up again and drained. I just wonder if anyone has had this issue and what was your outcome. There is no infection at this time. It's more irretating then anything since I have to clean and bandage at least twice a day, Other then that I feel great.
