    Plateaued at 11 months post-op 😔

I really empathize with this, but - ! - you unfortunately don't get to set your new weight set point at surgery. Your body may decide this is where you're good, and fighting it too hard could lead to a new cycle of overeating --> restrictive dieting --> more overeating ... Is there not a chance you could be happy where you are now? (And if not, why?) I'm BMI 26.8. Heck, last week I was BMI 28 for a while. I am well within a healthy weight range by any account but the BMI scale.

How long did you have the nausea? I am about 10 weeks post-op, still on two nausea meds, queasy most of the time. I'm 68....

    Plateaued at 11 months post-op 😔

As we get closer to a normal BMI weight loss does slow down. For me it slower about 20, but Now I am 9 pounds from “normal” and I am stuck!! I don’t do a lot of exercise either other than walking. It is possible it’s just a long stall but if it doesn’t break soon you will have to explore the possibility that you have put yourself into maintenance. At that point you will have to log and see exactly how many calories you are currently eating and consider cutting them by a bit to start the loss again. You say you eat three small meals and don’t snack much but you would be surprised how much the calories can vary based on that. Maybe before cutting calories speak to your dietician because of the low BP and blood sugar (I am not experienced with those).

    weight plateau and energy loss

I agree it’s probably just a typical stall. Your lucky because most have them around three weeks out. Im sure the anemia is depleting your energy as you said. Hopefully adding a supplement will fix that fairly quick. Just keep sticking to your clinics plan and your loss will start again.

    weight plateau and energy loss

Hallo, luek je te ontmoeten. Yes as the others said its a stall. Very frustrating. I felt very weak for the first 2 to 3 months. I put it down to my age and extreme nausea. Once I got my calories in the 800- 1000 a day range and sorted my vitamins, things improved hugely. I can now clean the house without problems and have started walking. It will get better. Good luck
  6. Hi, everyone! I’m 11 months post-op from VSG and I have a bit of a dilemma. I have not been losing any weight as of about 6 weeks ago. I’m 38, 5’5”, and currently yo-yoing between 177 and 178 during every weekly weigh-in. I still want to lose about 30 more pounds to put me in a healthy weight class. Nothing has changed with my eating habits - I still eat very small portions, mostly solid protein, and do not snack much during the day. Since the surgery, I have had some issues with orthostatic hypotension (dizziness from low blood pressure) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so I would be very surprised if my diet needed any adjustment right now. I should mention that I am coming off of ten years of disability for early onset degenerative disc disease, so other than twice-weekly physical therapy, exercise has been completely foreign for me, hence the excessive weight gain. I’ve had four neck surgeries and countless back injections and procedures. At my heaviest, I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes without excruciating pain in my lower back. However, in the last month, I’ve been feeling well enough to start seeing a personal trainer once a week and easing into a light workout routine (dynamic stretching, light free weights, strength training, etc.). I’m also walking more frequently and for longer distances. My question is this: could the lack of weight loss be due to rebuilding muscle from my new exercise regimen? Or should I try to adjust my food intake again and see what happens? I have my one year checkup with my gastric surgery team coming up next month and I plan to talk to them about this issue, but I wanted to seek out any advice on here, too. Thanks so much in advance!!

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I leave for the hospital in a few hours. I live in ky so it’s 152 here have to be at the hospital at 7. I’m so nervous. Anxiety through the roof smh. . I’ve done prayed idk how many times. This is what I wanted tho. Good luck and congrats to everyone that goes today or this week or this month. We gonna kick ass.!
  8. I’m about 5 weeks out from rny gastric bypass and I’m starting to get back to a more “normal” diet. Are there any meal kits out there that anyone knows of? a couple years ago I was in a ldr and my bf used to order 3-4 meals a week. When I visited, it was enough for two and when I was not there, he always had leftovers since they are designed for 2. Since I’m obviously not eating as much as I did pre op, one kit would probably be 4 or 5 meals and that seems so wasteful because I can’t imagine eating the same thing 4 meals in a row. Are there meal kits out there that make smaller portions?

4 weeks post op and vomiting?

Yes I have the surgeon and the dr at the weight loss center to contact. I feel ok (slight tummy ache) other than that episode so I’m going to definitely call both in the morning. I just didn’t think (hoping) it didn’t warrant calling the on call dr. . I’ve been trying scrambled eggs for about a week and was doing ok but I agree I’m going to probably back off that for a while. I’m supposed to start soft foods this week but I don’t feel confident in doing that after today. Thank you both!

4 weeks post op and vomiting?

It’s not GERD so you can breath. This is pretty common. Sometimes it’s your fussy sensitive tummy & you‘ll be able to eat that same food in a day or so without issue. Sometimes it’s eating too much or too fast. Sometimes what you ate isn’t quite soft or runny or moist/wet enough & it gets ‘stuck’. Sometimes it’s that you’re just not ready for that particular food yet. It’s part of the fun & a fair bit of trial & error. I often had the foamies - spitting up excess saliva & sometimes regurgitate the last bite or so of what I ate in the first weeks especially in the morning. I can’t burp so I would cough or want to thump my chest first. And yes it happens pretty quickly but also passes quickly.

    Is it wrong or ok

Is your therapist experienced with eating disorders & bariatric patients? It’s a more specialised field & just something to consider. Understanding our relationship with food is a huge part of this process & our success. Wanting to start incorporating improved eating habits now is great. But you don’t have to do everything all at once. Small wins are always best. Make one or two small changes & get them established over a couple of weeks before changing or incorporating something else. Focus on protein. Increase your fluid intake. Then try smaller portion sizes. Up your vegetable intake. Reduce your snacks. Try some new cooking methods & new recipes. You don’t have to do everything at once. It’s not a race. I know from your earlier post you have an issue with blame & being critical of yourself for perceived failures. I wonder if you asking whether it’s ok or wrong to have a peanut paste sandwich is you subconsciously looking for a way to beat yourself up if you do have the sandwich & people say don’t? It’s also interesting that you question a peanut paste sandwich but not the pizza. Whether you have the sandwich or pizza is your choice. Many do eat these foods in maintenance but do so occasionally not regularly & you can too if you want. But this is a perfect opportunity to try other recipes or alternatives too. Try a cauliflower based pizza or a high protein, low carb bread for your sandwich, or a no added salt & sugar peanut butter. There’s often an alternative. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, for support or suggestions. There are always people here who have the same or similar experiences. PS - I used to love a peanut paste sandwich. Fresh white bread with a crunchy crust & smooth peanut paste. Yum! Now I just sometimes have a teaspoon of the paste to satisfy that old memory.

    First time with foamies/frothing

It’s not pleasant but at least it passes quite quickly unlike dumping. Dry meat is always the cause for me. Though I did have a episode a couple of weeks ago caused by very coarse green beans - they were unusually hard to slice so I should have tread more carefully. Don’t give up a food if it makes you unwell though just give it a break for a few days or a week & try again. Next time, try smaller bites, add extra sauce or gravy, cook it in a different way like to medium rare not medium or well done, or try a different cut like chicken thighs not breast, etc.
  13. Yes, much if what you are experiencing, the tiredness, doughy head, is from the surgery & the reduced diet. Your body has been through a lot & it’s probably telling you you need to rest & take it easy. Just healing is mentally, emotionally & physically exhausting. It will get better. Try sipping an electrolyte drink for a boost of energy. Not getting all your vitamins in the first week or so is okay but you need to make a concerted effort to take them every day. Our reduced food choices & small portions make it difficult to get in the vitamins & minerals our bodies need to function. The tiredness could be from low iron which is not usual after surgery. Have you had a blood test lately to check your levels? You may find once you’re in maintenance you won’t need to take them anymore. I stopped at about month 8, 2 months into maintenance with my surgeon’s approval because my blood work showed my levels were all great. I hate having to take meds so I was super happy. Some vitamins can make you nauseous. Try a different brand. Split the dosage across the day. Make sure you take them with food.
  14. Hello everyone. I am almost 4 weeks postop, I had my sleeve surgery on February 21st. In general, after the first week, I have not had any issues with vomiting. However today, I had a pretty bad episode. I ate some scrambled eggs (I’m still in puréed and I’m trying really hard to stick to the plan) , and had a lot of belching right after (is that gerd? I hope not!). About 15 minutes later I felt it coming back up and vomited everything back up. My main question is— what could have caused this? Did I eat too fast? Was it not chewed enough? Was it too much (I measured about 3.5 oz)? Could it have been a combination of all three? I’m hoping some people at or further in their timeline can help me out or share their experiences. I was also a bit concerned because I saw some bright red flecks and it was tinged pink at the end. Not alot but enough that I noticed. Is my pouch ok? Thank you all!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Surgery scheduled for April 11th. Going for the sleeve. Wife had her's done 2 years ago and has good success. Our surgeon requires a 4 week Preop diet using only their food. 1 week into that and the hunger pains are a huge challenge. I know it'll be worth it in the end, but man it's gonna be a struggle.

    weight plateau and energy loss

as long as you're sticking to your clinic's plan, it's just a stall. Most of us have our first major stall within the first 3-6 weeks after surgery - yours is a little later than that, but I'm sure that's what's going on. You'll likely hit several of these throughout your journey. It's annoying, but it's all part of weight loss (at least for many of us) when you hit these, just stay off your scale (maybe just weighing once a week) and make sure you're following your plan to a "T". They usually last about 1-3 weeks before breaking - and then you'll be on your way again.
  20. Hello this is my first post. I wanted to try to get a better understanding as to what is possibly going on. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on the 24th Jan of this year the first 5 weeks i lost a lot of weight fast, 20kg. Now i'm at a stand still the past 2 weeks i'm bobbing up and down 1/2 kg. i'm now down to 146 kg. I have no access to a dietitian until 16th May so i can't ask whats going on. I was at my local GP on Friday to get a blood test ordered as i have anemia on and off since surgery i felt like rubbish no energy, tired all the time and it's an effort to get out the front door. I'm suppose to be making all these fantastic changes exercising and honestly i just don't have the energy for it i do try to get out every day for a walk thats a force. I'd apprechiate any insight, thoughts or ideas all are welcome.
  21. Hummus. I've eaten tubs of it this week, in about half a dozen varieties. I wish I could spread it on raw veggies or crackers, but just straight from a baby spoon is fine, too.

    Post op constipation…

I had this problem too, and it was compounded by having to have knee surgery 4 weeks after WLS so I was on opioids for pain. I got in the habit of putting Metamucil in a liter of water and drinking it every day. Helped with both the water intake and fiber intake. If I skip a day of fiber-water, I pay the price 3-4 days later but stool softeners help. I also recommend keeping suppositories on hand just in case you have an issue as this helps in the moment. I use refillable water bottles, and the fiber always goes into the same color so that I know I’m drinking the right one.
  23. @tristynftw and I are having surgery on the 24th as well. I know there are a few others this weeK too. I am very excited, super nervous, but ready!!
  24. I tried Ground beef on week 4 after Gastric Bypass and that is the fist time I got the foam in my mouth. It happens each time I try beef, even a little bite, both surgeon and nutritionist told me to wait until month 4 to try it again and if it still gave me discomfort wait until month 6. I have always liked beef but lucky for me I do not miss it now. Surgeon told me that when I have the foam the best is to have warm liquids and wait.

    First time with foamies/frothing

yes, they do. A lot of people have issues with various foods the first few weeks (and sometimes the first few months) post-op. Eggs, dairy, dry meats (like a dry chicken breast) are all common culprits. For most of us, we can eventually eat all of these again.
