Struggling With Food (Vomiting) And In My 2Nd Mon. As Of Today!
longer-life replied to mmoore's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go slow though. Try starting with the softer foods that emlefe suggested like egg salad (or ham salad, tuna salad),tofu, laughing cow, yogurt, cottage cheese etc, in very small amounts. I couldn't eat chicken breast, deli meats or meatballs on my 5th week. Laughing cow and mozzarella string cheese had to be at room temperature. Similar to Emlefe, I was basically getting my nutrition from shakes (more like 80%) and sampling 1/2 ounce of this and 1/2 ounce of that. Consider getting new recipes for shakes so you can go easy on the solids. Our tummies do not all recover at the same speed. You will probably start tolerating more and more soon. -
I had a bit of cooked spinach and was OK around 4 weeks. Just try a few bites and see how it goes (don't go crazy). You can always have more next time. Maybe blend it up with some greek yogurt or fat free ricotta or low fat cheese to make it creamed? Blending it first may help, too.

My job brought in Q-Doba for my department for lunch today.... my favorite!! I feel like I cheated, but didn't go too overboard. I took two spoonfuls of chicken and about 2 tsp of guacamole, and a drizzle of queso.... i was strong enough to avoid the tortillas, taco shells, chips, salsas, sour cream and shredded cheese.... but i still feel guilty, I wish I didn't do it.... I should have stuck to my yogurt ~ I was doing so well until now.

I can totally feel you , I was sleeved Nov 13 , 2012 and felt exactly the same way ,,, what works better for me is that I bought the whey Protein Powder at GNC , vanilla flavor ( The red one ) and I mix 1/2 banana & 3 strawberries with 6 oz Skim milk and 1 scoop of the powder Protein in the blender, or buy the Frozen berries with pieces of yogurt ( Yoplain ) and Skim milk or Water and the protein powder . If you are stil pre op , check with your doctor but if your post op , you should be okay.

Question For Banded Plication People.....
mrsto posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I get hungry (true hunger), the stomach pangs/growling is downright painful. I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this? If so, is it something that's more intense in the early stages after surgery, or is just the way it is with the smaller stomach? The nurse at my doctor's office said that they do hear this from plication patients, but it won't kill me. Well.....I'm glad to hear that it won't kill me, but DAMN.....you would think that I'd just walked across the desert & hadn't eaten in months It's woken me up from a sound sleep, but I started eating a little bit of Greek yogurt in the evening, which seems to quiet it down. UNbelievable! -
Hello. I had my surgery on July 26 and was doing great up until this morning. I was takin one oxy at night for a bit of pain but this morning I woke up and have had horrible burning pain at the port incision. Yesterday I was very hungry- pms I think- and couldn't stop eating yogurt and pudding till 12am at night. Do you think it's related? It hurts most when I stand up or move or bend but not sitting still. I just called my doctor after 5 hours of pain and 2 oxys later. Any ideas??

Ugh! - dang weather
Robyn Owens-Miille replied to dltrautman1's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm guess you're in the early stages. A lot of gas stations have Protein drinks these days. Look for those. If you have to, get some soft cheese and chew the heck out of it. Maybe a yogurt too? Save traveling. -
Fallacy of the 6 month wait....
Karen W replied to Recycled's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Recycled, Thanks for a great post. I was fortunate to have a quite doable pre-op diet, so not a big problem. And I don't have the "my best friend" relationship with food (except garlic, perhaps, but no reason to end that), so that made it easier. Clear liquids day before and few days after....too numb and swollen to care. Now I am starting week 2 of post-op full liquids. NOW I want real food. I swear to God, I almost put a dog cookie in my mouth, I so bad wanted something to crunch on. That's what I miss most, something to chew, crunch... But not going to blow that now. Though I have another week on liquids, I have my first post-op appointment Thursday. I have a fantasy that doc will give me "time off for good behavior" and ok to go to pureed. Hah. That keeps me going for the moment. If he doesn't, it's only four more days after that of Trader Joe's tomato Soup and Protein shakes. I don't even much like applesauce and yogurt, but I can't wait. And eventually, I'll be able to crunch again. So looks like we all make it through this (from everything I've read anyway. And it just makes us stronger. Good Luck All!! Karen W in Texas BTW - I am 69, so if there in anyone out there who worries they are too old, just contact me! -
I'm supposed to be on clear liquid for a week and then all liquids for another week then pureed food for another week.. I was wondering, since I can't really drink much and I've only been on clear liquids for 4 days, what would happen if I start drinking yogurt 5 days post op? I've noticed some people were on clear liquids for a few days, I've done lots of research and it seems ok.. but I just wanted to get other opinions. Looking for ANY way to get more protein in.. thanks in advance!

Severe gas pains...what is the cause?
BetsyB replied to krstjump03's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some foods are sort of notorious for gas production--Beans, certain veggies, etc. So this may be a contributor, depending on what "normal food" means to you. I found, post-banding, that I've become lactose intolerant. Anything containing milk (except yogurt and cheese; the bacterial cultures in those prevent the problem) makes me terribly gassy. It's my understanding that this is not unusual post-bariatric surgery (but more common after RNY). I also have NO tolerance for sugar; I found this out when treating my just-discovered lactose intolerance with Rolaids---it didn't even occur to me to be concerned about the amount of sugar in a Rolaid, but it caused great gastrointestinal distress. So, two new intolerances identified at once! (Fun.) BUT--the most common reason for gas is swallowing too much air when eating. I assume you're not using straws or drinking during meals, since your doctor probably forbade these both. But also remember to chew slowly and carefully and don't talk while eating. (I don't mean don't talk during the meal--just not between putting a bite in your mouth and swallowing.) -
1 month post op, whats everyone eating?
katmagmom replied to trinhle905's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
B - 1/2 cup cottage cheese S - Greek yogurt L - chicken salad (1/4 to 1/2 cup) D - grilled chicken breast tenderloin with some kind of sauce to moisten it up S - if I need a snack, I might have some more cottage cheese (i use fatfree) -
I started the 10 day sugar free liquid diet on June 6, I lost 10 lbs in those 10 days, surgery was June 16-since then I have lost a total of 26 pounds. keep in mind 10 of those was before surgery. I am on solid foods-typical day is 1/4 cup egg beaters with cheese, lunch is about 1 to 2 ounces of tuna, fish, or chicken. If I add anything I add greek yogurt, pickles or sugar free spagetti sauce and fat free cheese to the chicken.Supper is usually one of the things mentioned above with a vegtable or black Beans with a small amount of baked potatoe and cheese. I am sipping all day but have not gotten in more than 2 bottles of 16 oz. Water. I know I am not getting enough Protein because I honestly can't get more than 3 ounces in during each meal. I am walking an hour at least 4 times per week. The scale hasn't move in a week and a half. I am so very discouraged-Every diet I have ever tried I have lost about 20 and then it stops. Please tell me I didn't have half of my stomach removed for 16 pounds. The discouragemnet is making it hard for me to continue with the foods I have been eating, nothing tastes good and I really don't want anything. If I knew it was working I would be fine--- Suggestions?? Thank you for reading the long post

Hi Ladybug3, I'm sorry you're having trouble swallowing Vitamins. Unless you have a swallowing problem, the vitamins shouldn't get stuck. I take 4-6 at a time and they're different shapes and sizes. Four years ago, I had trouble swallowing them, too. But, I'm able to take them now with no problem. Here's a swallowing tip . . . If you're tilting your head back to swallow vitamins, try the opposite. Tilt your head forward a bit. It helps keep your throat open. Works for me. Or try this . . . My aunt and mother take their vitamins with anything soft, like yogurt, pudding, applesauce or mashed potatoes. They put the food and Vitamin on a spoon. Even though it's OK to cut the vitamins in pieces, they're easier to swallow with the smooth coating rather than rough edges. And then you don't have to struggle thru 3 or 4 swallows either. Since you love Shaklee vitamins, have you tried Shaklee CitriBoost? It's a powdered vitamin you mix with orange juice. Ask your distributor. She/he may have other suggestions.

Vitamins make me gag!
Justajenn replied to peacharoni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been taking them whole. I tried opening them and putting them in yogurt and I couldn't stand it. I did chewables for maybe three days and then switched to my normal. Can't do the chewin on chalk thing. I just don't take them all at once. I take a my small ones (biotin, colace, regular) when I wake up. Take a shower the do my PPI then with breakfast my multivitamin and probiotic. -
Oh, and another thing I thought of..even though you said you don't snack per say. I would suggest you eat a lite snack between meals and make them healthy such as a fresh fruit, hard boiled egg (white), yogurt, or string cheese. This can help with adding on to your caloric intake as well

Questions! Advice please :)
stomlin75 replied to jennaleigh1992's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with what everyone said but I will say that avoiding refined carbs is probably a good idea because it will stave off cravings for later. I stuck with splenda for sweetener, avoiding any sugar. I later tried sugar in some things (yogurt for example) and this set me back a little until I took it back out of my diet again. I also ate some instant mashed potatoes on the puree phase and wouldn't do that again if i could do back. Focusing on getting whole grains is really ideal. Good luck and welcome back to some normal food again!! -
Help. Liquid Phase
Texarkolina replied to GiiNaGiiNa408's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to get down egg drop soup very easily. Greek yogurt has helped me with the protein. I am 3 weeks out and never want to see another popsicle again. -

What the heck is Full Liquids?
Threetimesacharm replied to ChristieK's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I find it hard to believe that your surgeon did not give you specific guidelines. What kind of surgeon did you have? Full liquids are those that are not clear; strained creamy soups, yogurt, pudding, shakes(thin), thinned cream of wheat. -

Am I just weird.....got banded Wed, 3/4...
lbs030409 replied to Michele74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's so cool that so many of us were banded on the same day. Mine was on 3/4 as well. Two days ago I had blended oatmeal and it made a huge difference with my comfort level. My stomach just needed more! I was headachy, shaky, and in discomfort from having an empty stomach. I was allowed juice, pudding, protein drinks, yogurt and soups with no chunks. It just wasn't cutting it. Anything with sugar (protein drinks, pudding juice etc.) was making me feel worse. My body isn't used to that kind of food. Today I steamed brown rice and added it to mushroom soup. I made sure that it was liquid by the time it went down, but I immediately feel 100% better. I hope that this is okay. -

Also remember each body is different. YOUR body may not be ready for yogurt yet. Esp. Greek which is much thicker. -

Two Weeks Out And Need Help
phatdivabbw replied to sleeve523's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Caution! Just because you feel good doesn't mean you are completely healed inside. That takes time. Talk to your nutritionist. I am two week out 3 weeks tomorrow and I'm eating sugar free pudding, sugar free yogurt, cottage cheese, cream of wheat, pureed Soups and occassionally mashed potatoes and baby food. Still doing sugar free Jello and ice pops. 78 grams of Protein a day Minimum 48 ounces of fluids Either 1/2 cup or 1 cup depending on what it is. Talk to your doctor or nutritionist -
Nutritionist Rules - What did yours say?
Maddysgram replied to Sunshyne068's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was told Protein first, thats what keeps you satisfied. I also add ff plain greek yogurt to a lot of things, just to boost the protein. Plain yogurt in chili is really good. reduced fat Peanut Butter, ff greek yogurt and splenda is a really good low cal snack. The small amount of carbs you shoukd be getting, are good carbs, fruits, veggies and such. Not breads, Pasta and rice. You say you track, do you measure? Sometimes our eyes play tricks on us.lol Good luck!
