    Friday the big day

I'm dealing with the same thing. I'm sick of other peoples fears. I wish my family could say they are proud of me and happy for me. I know they just care but it keeps filling my head with doubt and I want this to be my own choice. I'm also having surgery with Dr. Almanza and i'll be there on the 19th. It's going to be okay. I think everyone is scared and it is a scary thing but it will be fine and then we can finally lose this weight and start living again. :lol0:

    Lapband vs lapband with plication?

no one WLS is better then the next..all WLS require work and a mental change and a def change in eating habits and begin to exercise to make the most of whatever surgery one gets. the plication as my dr told me is my stomach folded into itself and stitched to make a small banana like (sleeve) if you will..it will (and has) helped me eat less and since this is a new procedure and still in early trials, i had to sign waivers on it...my dr did it pro bono for me....i was super morbid obese and the dr wanted me to have the bypass and i said no.....so he offered me this with the band but STRESSED that if didnt follow the lap band rules (eating my allotted amounts, stop eating junk food and begin to (move), no WLS would help me...... most WLS can and will help one lose at the beginning (the pre and post op diets helps with fast mainly all Water weight loss) and its amazing and its a confidence booster......and then when people REALIZE that they cant eat what they use too and just push it and overeat anyhow or not follow the rules, then the surgery isnt working..and 10 or more posts a day on this forum saying what am i doing wrong etc.. get whatever one you want but understand that its not a miracle....it will help you if you help it...i am living proof of that......but i also know/understand if i dont do my part the bypass, the sleeve or the DS or the band or plication wont work..people rush into WLS in my opinion thinking i had surgery and now i will automatically lose 100 pounds in a week..doenst work that way....a total mindset and attitude change is a must for success..esp when one was as large as me when i started..i either did it the right way, or got bigger...i had no other options.
  3. Remember teenage PMS...that's what this is like. Hormone surges due to weight loss, and we can't self medicated with food like usual. Our stamina is down, Our world has changed, we are different now and see our friends and family differently. Follow Dr.s orders, rest, walk, drink. Find things to keep your brain busy. Game books like sudoku, I bought adult coloring books and paint by numbers, that a friend recommended! Stack of magazines and a handful of new books. Messy closets are the plan for the last week before returning to work. Dream, plan and breathe! This is the how the "change" happens! I warned my husband that they were taking away my pacifier so I may whimper and cry a bit!

    Who decides the fills?

My doctor talks to me quite a bit about how things are going with my appetite, how fast and how much I can eat. He also monitors my weight loss. If I am losing 1-2 pounds a week, no fill is needed. He does make me wait 6 weeks between fills though.

surgery on the 9 of june any advice?

Well, I have no advice, but I'm scheduled for June 5th and am getting crazy scared. We just have to keep faith that we are doing the right thing. Coming here helps keep me focused on the weight loss not the actual operation. Good luck!
  6. Had my first appointment with the surgeon this morning. Lots of information and I'm a little overwhelmed. They explained all 3 options they provide - roux en y, sleeve and band. They explained the typical success rates of each and how much weight I could expect to loose with each based on the averages of their 3000 patients. Now I'm even more confused than I was before. He said he can't recommend 1 surgery over another, but that I'd see the greatest results with the bypass. However, he also said I'm the perfect candidate for the band because I'm young and have few health problems and no mobility issues. The target he set for a healthy bmi is a loss of 132 pounds (I can't believe I'm carrying around an extra person, I've been in denial). He said based on the averages I'd loose 75% with the bypass, but only maybe 30-40% with the band. He stressed this is only an average....but there's no way to known if I'll be average or outstanding. He also said the band doesn't always work. I hate the thought of going thru the surgery and seeing no result. His PA said if it were here, she would go "all in" and get the bypass. She described the band as "you on your best diet." They said I don't have to decide until we set the surgery date. I'm just feeling really overwhelmed and this is the first place I wanted to go.

Post op question- further weight loss

Sometimes when your body gets to the weight it wants to be you can starve yourself and it's not going to budge. You have had a dramatic weight loss and it probably is going to take some doing to get the rest off.
  8. Does anybody have experience with weight gain after starting Prednisone? I have been gaining a 1/2 to 1 pound a day but am careful with my calorie intake. Will this gain leave as soon as I stop the Prednisone? I am on 10mg a day for 14 days for severe Sciatica pain. Which also means I had to stop exercising. Help!!!! Mimi
  9. I just created a bio with all my issues but can't find it so here goes ... I had my sur. Nov,2004. I have had only one unfill in that whole time. I had a thyroidectomy May 27th, 2008. I am a cancer survivor and now cancer free but in the three months post op that surgery, I gained 30# and am having problems getting it off and I have abnormal CBC lab values low hemoglobin and hematocrit and elevated white count and more than doubled platelets. I have subsequently had an upper GI and lower last month resulting in (from biopsy) a lot of undigested food above the band, a bacterial infection of the stomach lining, and diverticulitis. I am on Tetracycline, Biaxin, and Previced for 14 days. I am in pain and my abdomin looks like an eight month pregnacy. I have had much pain in my life as I have lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, diabetes and few lesser issues. Those are the heavy hitters. I think I am going to have the band removed because if there is undigested food above the band the infection will reoccur. Has anyone had theirs removed????

    Greetings

It is so great that you are doing this together and you will have your own personal weight loss buddy. Best of luck!!
  11. So I am still in the planning stages, but have made my decision on gastric sleeve. I have about 80-100 lbs to lose. THere is so much info out there that has helped, but would like some direct first hand answers! I am debating between Dr Leon or Dr Ortiz in TJ. Any thoughts? I am concerned with feeling like a normal person. How long before you felt normal, as in you could eat normal healthy food (just in much smaller portions) I will not live the rest of my life on soft food and Protein shakes will I? I am 5"8. Every one talks about skin. I know its different for everyone, but does everyone have lots extra skin? Do you have more with sleeve than you would just traditionally losiing weight? I have lost about 70 lbs before (gained back of course) and did not have any skin. That mean i probably won't this time? Now my weight is very evenly distributed everywhere Will I lose my hair?? I want to get this started asap...If I chose April 8 surgery date, I will be vacationing in Florida May 2. Will I be miserable, what would i be eating by then?
  12. So I forgot to put this last week. I was reading some article in People magazine that was about that country singer that's married to Garth Brooks. I know her because of her cooking show on food Network: Trisha Yearwood. She's lost about 30 pounds and I figured this would be the same old kind of article about eating right and exercise that we always see. It wasn't. She was so honest about living her life at size 16 for decades and just wanting to be able to be less tired. The thing I thought was so cool about this piece was when she said a couple of weeks ago after some awards thing her and Garth were flying back and she ate an In N Out burger with fries and a coke and she had two Peanut Butter cups. Usually she'd just go "Well, my diet is ruined so I might as well just keep eating everything I want to eat" but now she thinks "Ok. I splurged. No big deal." and the next day she ate like she was supposed to and went to Zumba class and that was that. And she didn't have any weight gain and realized this is how normal people eat. Normal people do not beat themselves up everytime they have a burger. Normal people do not constantly think about food or the ramifications of having a piece of chocolate. As long as your indulgences are limited to splurges and not an everyday occurence, we should stop being so obsessive and negative towards ourselves. I really found this helpful. I am just like that. I'll eat chips and think "Well, since I've already come this far" when really I just need to go "Those were a great treat. Where's my Water?" instead. Alright. That's all. Just felt like sharing. Ters
  13. So here I am on day one, week three of post op. Dr.'s rules are that now begins the 2 week period of pureed Full liquid Stage. I did fine on the last two weeks of Clear liquids with no hunger and getting most everything in every day. Funny thing is that I have this huge list of things I can have, but due to working midnights and having a really hectic schedule, I am not sure how to eat or when to eat. I have three breaks at work, 2-10 minute and one 30 minute lunch. Tonight I took Cream of chicken Soup (4oz.) I had this at lunch and loved every minute of it....lol. I also had a sugar free pudding at a 10 minute break. But I am not sure if I am doing it right or have enough time to eat correctly even though I managed tonight with no problem. Can anyone help me on what they eat in this catagory that is easy so that I could take it to work and make it all right. Should I stick to Protein shakes for work and then eat only when home....not sure and so confused. I thought I had this all worked out until day one appeared out of nowhere... I have done really well with my weight loss so far since surgery and have lost a total of 24 lbs..... maybe a little of the fear comes in thinking I will gain that back if I eat differently. So not sure about this..... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks bunches
  14. All - I am having similar issues messed around for a year w/ complete unfills and going back up. Lost 72 lbs in 9 months and then problems started. Here are observations and the awesome NP in the practice and Dr I see, helped alot w/ the clinical signs because in my case it looked really bad at 5.8 cc's but an unfill corrected it completely but the joke is I can't get filled it would need to be loose so whats the point? 1) After June I was never in the green zone i was either too loose or too tight where that was defined by reflux problems at night. They explained that could be a hiatal hernia that developed. It sure looked that way or a partial slip on the barium swallow a few weeks ago before he released it. 2) Through this i've net gained 12 lbs and I imagine would if i did nothing would slowly gain back 3) after the unfill the barium swallow looked pretty good the band did look like it was sitting lower; before the unfill pouch dilated and it looked like stomach was coming up 4) Dr explained to me that the acid reflux ends up causing problems w/ the espophagus and it works less effectively in pushing the food through So my point is that in my case even w/ the films there was not THAT much that was conclusive and sometimes they do need to go on the clinical evidence. I hope it will work for all of us - even though this is a pain this is still the best thing I ever did. My big fear is that it will fail. I am going in on Sat

    Fitness After Surgery!

Did you do weight training and Pilates at any point before surgery? Does it seem like a good idea to jump into these 3 weeks after surgery? What does your doctor say about this?
  16. I’ve been wandering around the wilderness of candy and DQ Blizzards… </O:p Then in Sept, I realized I was tired of not having lost any weight since May. I was tired of not being able to do what I said I wanted to. So, I started seeing the psychologist at my WLS clinic, actually my DH and I are going together. And I got a much-needed fill on 1/2/2007(starting out the new year right!). <O:p</O:p <O:p</O:p I had re-gained 15 pounds while in denial and then starting to work things out. So much better then in the past, where I would re-gain everything I lost plus a few more pounds for reinforcements. I’m down 8 from my fill, and pants that were getting tight are fitting better already. So, my lesson is that the band is my safety net while I work on other things, and is there for me when I’m ready to get going again. Not bad!<O:p</O:p <O:p</O:p

    Hello Calgary! :) Dr.McKenna?

I was also referred to Dr McKenna for weight management but decided that I wanted the Lapband and from what I’ve been told she is not involved in surgeries in Calgary…I believe she is strictly a nutritionist…so I packed my bags and headed to Mexico, I am 1 month post op and happy with my choic. I knew that there was no way I would be accepted in the WMP because I have no major health issues. Good Luck!!!

    STALL!

I am 2 weeks post op and right there too. STALL. In fact I gained 2 lbs when I went on full liquids. I eat maybe 1 can of Soup strained and divided up throughout the day. I have a coupe SF pops and my Water. Not much else. Really sad about this even though I heard people venting on the forums post op. I am trying not to weigh myself everyday. That only adds to my sadness about the situation. That and people asking if I have lost X amount of weight yet... GRRRR>..
  19. @@bring I am so sorry to hear this. I, too, am struggling with this problem. Most people say, "When you hit a plateau, exercise more." What if one can't? I went into this with a "pretty-sound" body. Little did I know that the mobility issues that I thought were weight/age related, were really a very serious Hip disease. Now, I am facing, at age 52, a bilateral hip replacement. Any exercise, including Water aerobics, causes pain. It isn't debilitating yet, normal, everyday movements cause just modest pain. But it is increasing every day. I went to 2 orthopedists, hoping for better news. The second was worse than the first. Has anyone else suffered from pain, loss of range of motion that limits exercise? How did you cope?
  20. Seems like you're aware that might not have been your best option. :-) If you can tolerate that type of food and you want to incorporate it into the larger picture of your diet, just be sure to count it appropriately--log the calories and carbs and protein just as you would any other food. I'm someone who feels that no food should be "off limits" or "not allowed," as long as there's a clear understanding of what consuming that food might mean in terms of weight loss/stall or increased sodium, etc. etc.

    7 months po

I think everybody has stalls without exception. Many people stop taking vitamins, but that's not a good idea. I hear a lot of bandsters say they regret it, but that's probably because they see more dramatic weight loss in people who've had other surgeries. If you are happy with your results, that's great, and try not to let that get in your head.

    4oz of food?

Either way, really - whatever is most convenient for you. If you consider that in these early mushy and soft phases most foods are close to the density of water (which scientifically is the measurement standard as 1oz volume = 1 oz weight) then it doesn't really matter. I find weighing to be much more convenient as one isn't continually cleaning measuring cups and spoons; even when cooking I rarely use measuring cups as the European method of weighing things is a lot easier.
  23. My father is 90 and his caretaker moved away so now I have to prepare his meals. This is the one thing I didn't want to do. My sister comes out every 6 weeks and freezes dinners for him. I go every am, noon, and dinner to get his meals for him. This is sooooo hard on me. My hubby does all the shopping for us because it is too hard for me to be around food. Now I have to do the shopping for my dad. Naturally the foods my sister has frozen are all wonderful and are the same foods from when we were growing up. They are so tempting! And he wants brownies, cakes, snicker bars, etc., etc., etc. This is almost too much for me to bear. I have gained about 2 pounds and I know it is because I am stressed at having the responsibility of taking care of him on my shoulders, plus being around all that food. I'm not worried, I will lose the couple of pounds. What I am wondering is - has anyone else been in a similar situation? How do you deal with it? Thanks for any help. Terry
  24. I've considered 2 day liquid diets each week to jump start my weight loss but DW dosent think it would be a healthy approach. I may do it for a few weeks just to see what happens I'm sure it won't kill me.
  25. I am two and a half years out from my surgery. I have gained six pounds but I feel like I have gained inches. My sizing varies. I can still wear clothes at my smallest and I can wear clothes that are one size up. I am under a lot of stress at work and have no time to exercise. Can anybody that is at least two years out relate to this? Tell me where you are and how you are doing? Any suggestions?
