    New year/ new me!

I will also be 63 in December, had surgery Nov 13 th. I became a grandmother last year and that was a big motivation for doing he surgery. It has been a more difficult recovery ( emotionally) these past 3 weeks than I expected, although the surgery was great. Looking to be part of an online support group
  2. Hi everyone, Well I am home now tomorrow a.m. will be 3 days post op. I have never felt this much discomfort before. But after the night of surgery when they took me off morphine I started feeling a lot better. I have to say that the pepcid chewables and the gas x strips have helped me greatly. The only other Issues I have had was while in the hospital they had to stick me a total of 12 times for iv's. I am a very hard stick and when they did get a vein it would blow after a few hours so I have swollen spots all over. Anyone know what to do for that?

    Bad dreams...

Thank you so much for your comment!! The only thing I had taken prior to surgery was ibuprofen, which except for like 2 weeks prior to surgery I was taking it almost every day due to severe knee pain. So maybe it is still trying to get out of my system. Who knows?? I've never slept very well at all. Although I am sleeping some better since surgery. I just hope the bad dreams stop soon! Thanks again!
  4. I'm fairly certain I'm dehydrated. I had my surgery 8/6 and I was having trouble getting anything to go down. Finally figured out that I guess I wasn't taking small enough sips!! Started taking even smaller and it goes down much better now!!! My question is, now that I'm drinking more, should I wait and see how much i can get down or should I call my doc? I have an appt with him on Friday for my post op visit as he will be out of the country for the following 2 weeks.
  5. I know everyone has a different pre-op requirement. For me I will be on a 2 week liquid diet, I believe. My surgeon's office provides all the stuff. I want to attempt a liquid diet prior to my pre-op. Mainly protein shakes and jello, water, and other liquids. Did anyone else do their "own" pre-op before their pre-op? My hubby thinks I am going overboard trying to prepare myself. He said I could wait on the protein shakes. LOL! Just wanted other views. Thanks
  6. I have been getting laser hair removal since before my surgery. I am now 5 weeks post op is it safe to still get it done as i have an appointment tomorrow. I called my surgeon and left a message. But no answer yet. Also- i had unprotected sex with my fiance on Saturday. Is Plan B safe for me to take? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Post op experience

On my day of discharge (less than 24 hours after surgery), I was barely getting a couple sips of fluids into my new, smaller, swollen stomach. The charge nurse gave me a bunch of 1 ounce medicine cups and told me "Drink one of these cups of Fluid every hour, and you'll be fine". I immediately felt much better. A one ounce medicine cup is much less terrifying than a 16 ounce bottle of sugar free Poweraide! Believe me, I got no where near 64 ounce of fluid those first couple weeks post-op, but eventually the swelling went down and I could increase my liquid intake. My surgeon was a realist who reminded me that I had gone from a 32 oz. stomach to a 4 oz. stomach. I had just had major surgery. He gave me permission to just relax and not force myself to the point of being sick. Give yourself time to heal. Everything will eventually fall into place.
  8. Yes dr mueller is awesome. You must be excited, and yes, let's absolutely keep in touch. Good luck next week!
  9. My A1C came back high so my PCP had me wait 3 months before I could consider surgery.. But I did all I was told and finally surgery is Monday!! Good luck with everything

    San Antonio Surgeons

I used Dr Cavasos on 9-20-11. I cannot say enough good things about him and his staff. I don't know how many patients he has but when I call the office they immediately call me by name. They have been more than accommodating to my needs for follow up appointments because I do not have a set work schedule. The reason I went to him was he trained under the surgeon that did the first laparoscopic procedure. I believe he trained/worked with him for 8 years. I would STRONGLY suggest you go to several info seminars before you decide. I've sent 3 co-workers and 1 co-workers wife to Dr Cavasos and they all agree it was the best decision they've made. BTW, I'm down 110 pounds.
  11. So I'm on day 3 post op. I was starving the first day of surgery (but they would only give me sugar free pudding that was yuck). The day after surgery I got them to give me carnation instant breakfast, some yogurt, crystal light, and pudding which was much better, but I was very weak -- they didn't give me any protein supplements. I left the hospital at 4 PM the day after and went home and had some protein. I haven't been hungry since. It takes forever for me to finish eating anything. I'm guessing that is normal?
  12. Before my sleeve surgery I HATED, DESPISED, LOATHED, anything related to coffee. The taste, the smell, the everything. And even now (16 months after surgery) I still hate it BUT for some unknown reason, I have taken a liking to iced coffee. But in actuality, it's really a sugar bomb. I go to Dunkin and get a small caramel swirl iced coffee with 6 sugars and 6 creamers. WHY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH???? With that much sugar/cream in it there's really no trace of coffee flavor in it. I can say that I don't ever drink more than half of it, usually only about 1/4-1/3 of it. But it's like my body craves those first few sips. I really need to stop as I'm sure it is stopping the weight loss. I loss 100 lbs in the first 7 months, but then have tossed around the same 6 lbs since January. Tell me I'm not the only one who goes through this crap.
  13. Hi pals, So I had my surgery yesterday. I have to say that I wanted a redo that's how much it hurts. I kept gagging because of all the gas and there is nothing they can give you to make it stop besides you have to walk. And who wants to walk just few hours after surgery? Not me for sure. So even though you feel like you need to throw up, nothing will come out but but gas. I was regretting and should of put more thoughts into it. They were giving me medications but still felt discomfort. Finally in the evening I took few walks including 3 am because of the gas pain. You have no choice believe me. Omg I am literally peeing every hour because of all the Fluid they are giving me. I am still epo until my test later. Hopefully I won't have a problem. Oh I had throat discomfort and it was so scratchy. I told my nurse and she ordered me this spray which they approved and she sprayed it on my throat. At first the taste was horrible I felt like I wanted to throw up but OMG it helped sooo freaking much. It numbs the throat. Right now it's 6:30am and honestly I feel good. No pain besides maybe my back hurts a little and I can feel my scars when getting up to use the bathroom which is normal. I thank god for not having any shoulder pain how some explained. Maybe it might start later but as of right now I am good. The nurse said that's because of gas and as much as you walk.. It will help a lot. So do I have regrets now? Not so much. I feel normal and forgot I had surgery lol. So don't be discouraged everyone is different

    Headache post-op?

I had a headache, too. About a week out. I think it was because calories were too low - 300 about.
  15. Yes that is were most of the pain is because they work mostly through that hole. Also the stitch they use to close it is sort of like a spider web. As they pull out it closes. They usually use it when a person has a chest tube and they take it out after a lung has re inflated. It hurts for the first 3 to 4 weeks but better after. Sleep side to side and take pain med before so you can get some sleep!
  16. Starting again was all set to have surgery and changed jobs so that means new insurance carrier first one only a 3 month wait. Now new insurance company has a 6 month wait so all my testing will be aged so now I have to start all over. This sucks. : (

    Gas?

Oh yeah- expect for it to be more intense for the first week and a half. The gas x strips to help a lot. Some of what your feeling too maybe the trapped air in your chest, from surgery. That will be absorbed over the next week, but it makes things uncomfortable I try to exhale when I swallow.. to take in less air. I'm not sure if it's working, but I think it is lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    day 2 of surgery

I had trouble taking my water in and they werent going to release me either so my surgeon suggested WARM liquids like decaf tea. That did the trick. He said that some new tummies spasm due to the cold or even room temperature water. I got down 3 ounces in a snap and was feeling much better, started walking more and bam, released. Why not give it a try.

    Goal weight

I wasn't really a "low" 200's, but I started my pre-op diet the week before surgery at 237 and went into surgery at 228. I hit my goal of 129 at 18 months and have maintained within a few pounds up and down for the last 10 months. I weighed 153 when I went into my first plastics surgery (which is why I remember that number specifically) which was about 2 weeks before my one year sleeve surgiversary. The sleeve works since basically you are cutting out 80% of your stomach. You can learn to eat around it though. For example, I can eat a whole box of Wheat Thins in a few hours, so whether you lose or not is largely up to the habits you keep.
  21. now i'm, home and "on the other side" and meals so far are in a clear and full liquid diet... with so many liquids i basically am drinking my meal so I guess my fears for drinking while eating will see or fail to see themselves in several weeks when im to a puree or soft food diet. maybe. The good news... the surgery went well, no complications.
  22. Stalls happen along the way. Your body sometimes has to catch up with itself. I have hypothyroidism so my stalls are more frequent then the norm, but I literally have had so many I lost count. I'm actually in the middle of one right now that's lasted for 13 days so far. My last one was 15 days (my longest was 27 days) so I'm not worried, just irritated. Just keep with the plan and it'll pass.
  23. I was wondering what complications, if any, you had after surgery? I started having bad pain and nausea in my lower left abdomen, and they found it was diverticulitis. They think it is due to all of the protein shakes and after surgery diet/ pain meds causing constipation. I finally went back to work after being out for 2 weeks, and I started vomiting white foam, and I am back to feeling super nauseous and dizzy. Anyone else having these problems? Unfortunately with feeling so sick, I am not getting many calories and my dr said my body is in starvation mode, which is stalling the weight loss. I have to force myself to get up to 800 calories a day. Not fun...
  24. Congrats! You're only two weeks out but it sounds like you are upbeat. It's been a while since I was banded (Nov 08) but I do remember the first few weeks. I'm surprised you were on only a clear liquid diet for the first couple of weeks. I was on clear liquids and protein shakes - my doc said protein helped heal quicker. Here's what I say, and no I am not a doctor, but if you can't eat solid foods no one says you have to. Have protein shakes instead of solid foods if you can't get solids down. One of my favorite protein subs is greek yogurt (plain) but I throw in some flavored protein powder. It makes a great vanilla or chocolate yogurt! Fish is also great, and pretty mushy. My doctor also recommended only adding one new thing per meal to see if I could handle it. That being said, maybe stick with the foods you know you can handle. There was some stuff I couldn't eat immediately after my surgery that I am back to eating again just fine. Don't worry for right now about getting in too much variety. As for the general lack of hunger, I felt that too. I had no idea how I'd get in any of my food or my water with the amount I felt I could consume, because I couldn't possibly take in more. Once the swelling in your belly goes down, it'll loosen up a bit and you'll be able to take in more. Are you taking vitamins? Those will be important especially if you can't get in all your foods. I still take mine every day. It sounds like you're doing great! Everyone's got questions, but it does sound like you're overall upbeat about your banded life so far, and I'm happy for you! Just remember you can only do as much as you can do. This is all new to you and you're getting your bearings. Soon it'll become just a regular part of your routine. Best of luck to you, and I'm here for you!
  25. I am one week into a three week pre-op. My diet guidelines are 3-4 Protein shakes a day and 1 Lean Cuisine-type meal. Goal is to keep my calories under 1000-1200/day. I've been very good at keeping on plan, and I plan to stick with it. No cheating whatsoever. I'm having 3 shakes and the frozen dinner. I haven't been drinking that 4th shake, as I thought I'd reduce my calories as much as possible. One thing I was wondering, though, and I do plan to ask my doc on this, is if I can have one small glass of red wine several days before surgery. I realize I won't be drinking for 6 months or so after surgery, and I'm cool with that, but I would love to have one last glass sometime between now and my surgery, if it's not going to do any damage. I'd welcome your thoughts on this...
