  1. I thought I'd pick a weight that puts me in the exact middle of a healthy BMI for my height (that would be 113 pounds) and I can live with that. However, I'd really love to get to what I weighed until my 40's which was 102. Being realistic though, I will be thrilled with anything that is in the normal BMI range. I just don't want to be obese anymore!
  2. I love running, it is the best thing in the world to do. I know, I know, it makes people groan and pull the blankets tighter, lol. But if you can get through the getting fit part, to the point where a moderate run feels no harder than a brisk walk used to, its wonderful. Its great headspace, you get the endorphin rush, you do it simply for the love of it and not because you have to. Can you tell I love it? I do like team sports etc but at heart I'm a solo exerciser. I love the introspection and thinking time it gives me. I've never been one to believe in therapy and other such "quackery" but really, when I think about it, I've used my running time all along to focus on my weight loss, make positive affirmations, imagine great outcomes etc and I think it really has helped.

What changes are you making Pre-Op?

Tip from a coffee fiend- yesterday I went to Starbucks with a friend and I got something DELICIOUS. Not for everyday because you'd end up broke, but it's a good treat. I got a decaf, sugar-free caramel latte with whole milk. I think the whole milk helps it taste more real and it's still only like 120 calories for tall =) I do enjoy my coffee too I have cut back to one purchased latte per week and one cup of coffee each morning at home. I gave up my beloved diet coke/coke zero on Jan. 1st. I could drink 10 cans of soda a day but I struggle now to drink half that amount of Water, but I'm trying. Crystal Light has helped. I like to use frozen whole strawberries as ice cubes too. I started taking Vitamins a few months ago Incorporating some type of exercise has been more challenging for me also. Even for a fat girl I am a pretty picky eater...trying to find Protein shakes I can choke down will be my biggest obstacle. Distancing myself from those, that I now see, have a negative influence in my life. Just being around negative energy is not what is going to keep me focused on me, my goals and working through issues that will come up during this life changing experience. And...becoming more active in this forum (and others) to find answers to my questions, validate my feelings or outlook during this multi-facited journey, gain support from others and give support to others that have or will be making the same life changes.

From the album: That was then...

Cut all my hair off thinking really short would look better on "old and fat". This is the picture that started another weight loss attempt.
  5. I agree, something is flawed here. For what it's worth, back in the 80's or 90's Weight Watchers had a fat-and-fiber stage. The plan was very low fat, at least XX fiber (I don't recall the amount). Other than that, you could eat pretty much whatever you wanted. I gained weight on that sucker. Fat isn't my temptation. It's salty/crunchy like pretzels, many of which are fat-free. I was in heaven, except for the whole gaining weight thing.
  6. I don't believe this is true either. Back in 2008 I was devoted to following Atkins and lost fairly easily from 220 to 180 through strict adherence. You eat a lot of fat (I chose healthy fats like olive oil, black olives and avocados much of the time) and I noticed a huge drop in appetite and a huge increase in mental alertness and energy. It all fell apart when I quit smoking in 2009---I still sort of followed Atkins but started eating processed carbs more as well as potatoes and rice as well as other carbage. This resulted in gaining over 100 pounds by 2018. Processed carbs, starches and fruits are my nemesis and I just have to avoid them. This is not true for everyone but it is for me.

Fill or no Fill-what should I do?

If you have insurance and only have to pay your co-pay, you should still go for a check in with your doctor, even if you don't have a fill. My surgeon has me come every 4 weeks, even without a fill, just to keep record of my weight loss and to monitor what is going on with me. Or, wait a week to be sure you won't need a fill soon. I've stretched a few of my appointments out to 6 weeks for that purpose... Remember that the purpose of the Lap-Band is to allow you to feel more full (less hungry) with less food. If you're losing 1-2 pounds a week consistently and aren't super hungry, then you're not in need of a fill. Many people expect to slime, PB, etc., but that isn't what should be happening....ONE thing to remember--you should be measuring your food. My doctor talks in terms of 1/2 cup to 1 cup of food per meal....not just calories! Congratulations on your weight loss! Sounds like you're doing great!
  8. I am 3 weeks post-op and down 18lbs. I've already plateaued and haven't lost any weight since week 2. I walk at least 40 minutes a day and even kicked it up to a light jog. I'm eating a lot of vegetable pureed soup, homemade, protein, and water but can't seem to lose anymore. I didn't have to lose any weight prior to suregery. Is anyone else going through this?

    1yr 5 mo...

Hi everyone!! It's been a while. I'm down about 60lbs... a bit disappointed that is all the weight I lost. I pretty much stopped losing all together. I'm ok with my weight right now... The only problem that i had a fill about 6 weeks ago, and i now have developed reflux!!! It's horrible!! It happens at night... acid actually comes up into the throat, and mouth by itself.. like vomit in your sleep! I will get up maybe 2x a nite choking! I'm fine during the day, but I'm having the problem at night. I cut off drinking or eating anything around 7... but no luck. I take previcid 2x a day, but no relief. I have an apt. w/ the doctors tomorrow.. hopefully he can figure something out w/o unfilling me!!! But I have to honestly say... Getting the band was the best thing I ever did for myself. Best wishes to all!! Lucy
  10. I had an interesting experience last week. I went to my endocrinologist for a follow up on my thyroid. This was my third visit to her, as my doctors keep moving or retiring. We were almost at the end of the appointment and she told me that I need to lose weight. I agreed and told her that the last time I saw her I had mentioned that I was in the waiting period for Lap Band Surgery. Apparently she didn't make note of it and did not seem to understand. She started lecturing me on losing weight the natural way and I just needed to try harder. She told me that all surgery is risky. My insurance requires a year waiting period before surgery and I am doing everything I am suppose to do. My PCP is onboard and even asked me if I'd thought about surgery before I could tell him that I'd gone to an informational meeting. After his positive reaction, I was very surprised at the endocrinologist's very negative reaction. I think in writing this I've decided to see her on my next follow-up and if she is still opposed to the surgery, I will find another doctor. If I had been seeing her for years and trusted her opinion, I'd be more inclined to listen to her. I'm 6 months into my year and I have spoken to the surgeon, the nutritionist and the counselor. I know the risks, and what to expect. I'm not about to turn back now without a really good reason. Has anyone else run into negative reactions like this from your doctors? What did you end up doing?
  11. i know that there is a restriction on lifting weights for a few months post-op but what about calisthenic workouts? i'm talking things like push-ups, burpees, sit-ups, squats, lunges, etc. it's not exactly lifting but it is strenuous work

    Anger issues post-op

It took me a good 6-8 weeks to not feel crazy and get mad and cry at EVERYTHING....hope you feel better soon. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 198

    April/May Banding?

Hi, I'm 19 years old and new to the forum. I am finally getting banded on April 7th!!!! It's been hard to balance lap-band appointments and insurance issues, college, transferring schools and just loosing weight in general. I am so excited my time has finally arrived. Is anybody else being banded in April or May? What has your experience so far?
  15. I got my surgery date today for 6/30/11 (fingers crossed for the FINAL ok from the insurance)! This is going to be long winded but I am really glad I have found this forum of people that truly understand! I decided on LapBand as a last resort. I have tried everything gone up and down 70 lbs here and there but have never been able to maintain it. My goal was to be thin by the time my daughter started Kindergarten in order to avoid embarrassment for her – that came and went…. Then my goal was to be skinny by my 30th b-day – that is in two weeks….. I have now decided that instead of moping about 30 I am going to make a change for me that is lasting. I started nutrition counseling back in February and even through the counseling, I was not 100% sure that this is what I wanted to do. Last month, I made the firm decision to proceed and now I can’t wait to start a new life at 30! I am terrified of surgery so I am hoping that part goes smoothly. I am also terrified of giving up food. I know I can do it… Someone else on here described it as getting a divorce from your best friend or something similar. I cannot agree more with this statement! I am addicted to food….. It is there for me. I have been slightly panicked about not being able to eat this or that…. I am hoping that the surgery will ease that constant want for food. I am trying my best to make a lot of changes prior to surgery so that I am not in a complete panic after. Then there is always the lingering question of “what if it doesn’t work?” Any advice, thoughts, support, etc. is greatly appreciated. I have a great support system; however, the majority of them are thin so while they are GREAT they can’t really understand the full struggle with weight and food!

Why did YOU get lap banded?

I'm in the 6 month pre-op program as well. I have been overweight for the last 16 years, since my last child was born. At various times throughout the last 16 years I thought about gastric bypass and lap band surgery, but the possible side effects and after effects scared me too much. Earlier this year I was transferred to a new position within my department (law enforcement). This position is exciting and definitely a career advancement, but does require standing for hours on end at scenes. I came to the realization that I could not physically do that, and that basically snapped me out of my denial. I am obese. I am not a big girl, or big boned, or heavy. I am obese. I investigated and researched gastric bypass and lap band and decided that lap band was the right choice for me. In fact, once I had decided, I was so excited that I wanted to cry when I found out that I'd have to go through a 6 month supervised program first! It's a good thing though, I think it helps prepare you and get you in the mindset that you need to be in to make the band work. Mostly, I want to stop feeling crappy: all the aches and pains because of my weight. (Throw in a ballistic vest and duty belt and it just makes it worse.) The fatigue at the end of my work week because of lugging all this weight around. I want to do it while I'm still relatively young enough to enjoy it. While overweight I have always felt "less than" around anyone smaller than me. My accomplishments or talents didn't matter, I automatically felt inferior because I was fat. I am not "less than"! On this journey of a thousand miles, I have taken the first steps to regain the "me" that feels trapped in this body.
  17. I was aware of the possiblity of slip and erosion but not of the major pain in the ass the band could be if your body does not like having a band in it! However, here, the possibility of a resurgery is not that bad - you dont want surgery again, but it will be paid for, no problems. I dont have insurance problems etc to worry about. If I need surgery I get it. I was entirely aware that the band probably wont last in my body until the end of my days, if it wears out, I'll just get another one but if I get 20 years out of it, well, I'll be over 60. I'm not sure I'd bother. I think after over 20 years of healthy eating and exercise, enough of the habits have a chance of sticking, my body will be USED to being light, not heavy and my family on my dad's side all tend to get alarmingly thin in old age, and I have the general body shape of that side of the family, I suspect that's in my future too. It sounds better than it is, my nanna looked pretty hideous, sigh. I knew that the band required a LOT of work on the part of myself - I had people I knew who were banded. I liked that. I wasnt after an easy answer, I wanted to change my habits and my outlook - I know now a bit more about other surgeries and realise nothing is easy or automatic, however that was my thought process at the time and I still feel very proud of what I've achieved. Unlike many others here, I had NEVER been successful at losing weight, I had never ever lost more than about 15 lb on any attempt. I wanted to do this ONCE more and ONCE only. Keeping the weight off was a huge part of my decision to have surgery. Also, the biggest factor - the band is the only really common WLS here. I dont even know where you'd go to get a bypass and sleeves havent taken off yet.

    muscle milk

Muscle Milk has several formulas. There is one for people who are trying to bulk up. ( A weight gain type) There is one for regular Protein intake with good fats. Read the label. If it's the type that is 150 calories a scoop (or 300 for two scoops), with 30+ grams of protein, it's great stuff. They also have the light version (available premixed at Costco). Great to grab for Breakfast.
  19. i just got home from the hospital, i was banded on May 26 2009 at Tucson Medical Center by Dr. Monte Schwartz. at my preop oriantaion i weighted in at 410 pounds, i have not weighted my self since then, but i have notice quite a change already, i will be receiving my first fill on Monday June 1, any suggestions or support is really appreciated, thanks everyone.
  20. Also - Kiwi - my surgeon highly favored the sleeve. I asked him why, and he explained that besides it being easier to do than bypass, it kind of took the control from the patient. It's becoming the most successful WLS as far as quickness of weight loss and longer term results. He felt that the band patient had to be in the right frame of mind. Out of his 10 post-ops, 2 were well ahead of expectations, 5 were right on track, and 3 were not doing well at all with weight loss. I assured him that my mind was set on the band and that mentally, I was ready. He thought for my starting body type (I started at 243 lbs) that the band would be alright. I get no greater pleasure than going in for every follow-up/fill and proving to him that I'm totally ROCKING this Lap Band!! He's always full of positive compliments for me and my progress.
  21. I get excited about the weight loss, so I like to weigh more often. It encourages me to stay on the plan:)

    Too Fast

Hi Butterfly. Not to worry. Everything will turn out just as it should and you will be fine. It won't be easy, but is anything ever????? I also have BC/BS and had to go through the whole psych visit, 3 visits to the dietician/nutritionalist, provide 5 yrs. of weight history, etc., etc., etc., but I got approval rather quickly. I started the liquid protein diet on Wed., and that's all I'm allowed (well, water as well), but I do have one cup of coffee in the morning. It's a challenge, but so far, so good. I don't know how much I'm expected to lose, but I think 20% of the total lbs. overweight? My surgery is on the 14th. Good luck
  23. Hello fellow sleevers/future sleevers; Along with everyone else, I joined this forum so i can educate myself a little more in depth of the journey ahead. I am 24 years old. I have a 6 year old son with whom i gained 100 lbs with during my pregnancy (at age 17). Before then I was 170lbs. After pregnancy with the 100 lb weight gain, I let myself go. Almost 7 years later, I have an official date of getting sleeved. I have few questions, as I am anxious and cannot wait to start this journey. Aside from the weight gain from my pregnancy, the surgeon informed me my eating habits may change. It is very difficult for me to eat during the day , missing Breakfast and not eating until dinner time where I "PIG OUT" If i attempt to eat during the day, i will end up with a stomach ache . Hopefully, the surgery can correct that . I have a question for the already sleeved patients on the losers bench; After surgery, when you wake up, is the tube that's down your throat that bad ? Aunt was sleeved last week and she said it felt as if she was drowning. Thanks in advance, Cannot wait to embark on this journey with you all and get back to playing softball and finally becoming able to practice with my son. CW: 404 GW: 170
  24. I'm so frustrated! I had my husband hide the scale because it was freaking me out. I'm 3 1/2 weeks post-op (June 28th), and Ive only lost 1/2 a pound since 4 days after my surgery. I'm getting all my protein and water in. I'm currently on mushies, and I'm doing my best to watch carbs. One of the biggest problems is that I can't actively exercise. I badly broke my ankle at the end of May, so rehabbing it is standing in the way of exercising. How can I not be losing weight...I'm only eating about 400 calories?!! I did Medifast a couple of years ago, weight just fell off, and I was eating ALOT more:(. I'm so discouraged. I know everyone stalls, but I didn't think it would be so soon after surgery.
  25. I have noticed weight loss in my face and neck area and as weird as this sounds, in my hips ????. I am 3 weeks post-op today.
