How do you stop at a certain weight? EASY - you add an extra snack or two. I, for one, have a goal of 150, and I'm shorter than 5'5". Why would someone choose to stop at 150, is a pretty broad question/statement to make. There are other things to consider beyond height alone; age, body type, bone structure, etc. If I got down to (let's say) 135, I would look drawn and unhealthy. At my age, too thin doesn't look "well". If I continue to eat as little as I'm eating now, my weight will drop to a place that I really don't want it to be. I'm not 25 years old anymore, and looking drawn with a wrinkly face isn't my goal. When I get to where I want to be, if I can't control how much weight continues to come off, I will adjust the fill to a point where I maintain a weight that feels and looks good. And I look forward to having that problem to deal with.

How do people determine what their goals are as far as weight loss, and more importantly how do you stop loosing when you reach that goal??? I read this everyday here, and it makes me think about it...I just read a post from a women who has reached 150 and decided she will stop there, and she is only 5"5" tall.....and I asked myself "Why Stop There?" and HOW are you going to stop??? I have found, along with some of my peers who have had this surgery, that this is a permanent lifestyle change that lasts forever as long as the band is there being a constant.... and it is not a diet that I can turn on or off...my food intake has been drastically reduced, and to a large extent the types of foods I eat have also changed....why else would I have wanted surgery if not to correct the things that made me fat in the first place??? Over eating and bad food choices? Having said that, with this new life style I have found the weight will continue to come off until the body reaches what IT considers the correct, normal and natural weight.......reaches a point of equilibrium, balance....only way I could have stopped loosing at a weight at my determination would have been to get an un fill when I reached my goal...enabling me to eat more? Early on my Dr. laughed at me and said I will stop loosing when my body wants to stop loosing...and as long as I continue my Protein, etc, that will be my goal... I have reached that point...and according to BMI Charts, I am still 10 lbs over weight...according to Body Fat analysis, I an in the very low, Fit and Athletic range...a little below normal... So I wonder, when people reach the goals they have been striving for, how do you determine and stop at that point???

But on mederma, ASAP Silver gel, Vitamin E lotion, or any lotion MAY help. The incision itchiness will subside. Wait until you lose a lot of weight and your arms start itching non stop. All the lotion in the world won't help. My NUT acted surprised by this side affect yet others here report the same symptoms. I've not gotten any answers but can only think maybe it has to do with extreme excess skin, muscle losing from skin. I'm 62, probably too old to help even with arm exercises. Protein and Calorie Intake.
Kaylamh replied to Lisa_85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your protein sounds great. My goal is 80. I'm only 3 weeks post op and at about 650 calories a day. Have you been gaining muscle? And are you eating a lot of high fat foods? those might contribute to the weight gain -
Yes, if all this pain now means a lifetime with out pain from heartburn, walking, soreness from being over weight... Then I'll take it now.

To all of my vets!! Did anyone have to get a tummy tuck after a huge amount of weight loss? If so, did your insurance cover it, As it being Medically Necessary? I know some people said they snapped back without a tummy tuck and others had very loose skin.

I was sleeved on 26/5. It has been a very smooth process. I actually feel really great and energetic which is strange as I thought I'd feel the opposite. I've noticed a lot of you have moved on to puréed or soft food after 10 days. I'm under the impressive it was 14? Also when did everyone start exercising after sleeve? I mean weight training and cardio, not walking Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I just walked the butte with a friend. Little or no exercise for the past couple of months, but.... A mile up and down with 500 feet of elevation gain, it was still 88 degrees out at 9:45. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.

Hey everyone!!! So I'm planning to have the RNY...hopefully sooner than later! Just started the process though in July and see the surgeon next week. (I've already seen the np) Ive also done blood work and NUT visit....I've gotten all my specialties doctors to write letters of support and I'm psyched!!! What an amazing app with stories of good, bad and everything in between!! Love it! Do we have any type 1 diabetic success stories? I've had diabetes for 21 years now (was dx at age 11) my bmi is 36 and I have a ton of other issues however, what was your diabetes like post RNY? I know I'll never go into remission but just curious the effect on type ones? My doctors seem to think I'll gain better control....however, on the insulin pump I've had for 4 months has dropped my a1c from 9.3- 6.7!! It has made me gain 25 lbs though! Yikes! Well, I am still pre-op and started with my ***'s program at 300lbs. I have lost 22 lbs so far on my own, and MY goal for myself would be 165. That would put my total weight loss at 135 pounds. My doctor origionally wanted my goal to be 135. I laughed. I probably weighed that in 5th grade. But frankly, at this point, I look at it by each meal, each half pound lost, each day being closer to surgery and closer to my goal. Briar Rose

No, Laura. My MD is average weight, but he's of oriental extraction and I'm sure has never had a weight problem in his life. @@ He always had this disappointed look on his face when he saw my weight. I can't wait until I'm at goal and go in for my checkup, just to watch him eat his words! -

Newbie here! September surgery date.
CallejaFairey posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello! So obviously, I'm new here. I just wanted to say hello, and add my 2 cents. I'm 5'8, and my current weight is 360lb. I can't say for sure that this is my highest weight, as I'm pretty sure I've lost some weight since January, but I never weighed my self, so I can't be sure. I guess it really doesn't matter though, 360lb is high enough, don'cha think! Lol. I've been fat (said not as derogatory, but as a factual statement), almost my whole life. I had the few years pre-puberty as skinny, but once 11 or 12 hit, that was over. I am lucky enough to have gained confidence in my self in my early 20's. Loving myself, body and all. So I never tried all the questionable fad diets and gimmicks that are out there. However, I was aware that a lower weight would be healthier in the long run. Obesity runs in my family, and my Nanie (my Mom's Mom) died from complications due to being obese. I knew I didn't want to end up in the same situation as I got older, so I did try calorie counting and exercise. While it was semi successful, I just wasn't able to lose much, nor keep it off. I knew I needed something more powerful, and lasting, for me to make weight loss work. So I've always been interested in bariatric surgery. Due to many circumstances, surgery through health care (Canadian here), was just not an option, and money for pay myself surgery, was just as unlikely. However, after a few family members went through they're own surgery, seeing how helpful surgery really was for weight loss in individuals who haven't been able to do it on their own, some of my family decided that they wanted me to have this chance, and put things in motion for me to be able to do this. Fast forward to now, a few months later, I have a surgery date of September 5, going to a surgeon in Mexico, the same one that one of my family members went to. She is confident enough in her experience to have set me up with them. In fact, she'll be traveling with me, to help me out. I'm excited for this journey, and a little nervous, I've never had surgery before, but I know this will be good for me. While I've been lucky enough to have remained relatively healthy, with only sleep apnea as an issue I have, I know that won't last as I get older if I don't do something now. So that's my story so far. I'm loving being able to read everyone's story on here, and hope to add more to this great community! -
What do you eat?
Oak Park Lorena replied to northstar9148's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used Medifast for breakfast, lunch and a snack and then 4 oz lean protien and a veggie for dinner for my pre-op diet. Medifast is low fat, low carb, high Protein and been around for decades for weight loss. It actually does not taste terrible. I actually like the pudding and the teas, the shakes are kind of the usual Protein shake experience. I did Medifast for weight loss in the late 80s (yes, I am so old!) it's not a great solution for long term because you gain the weight back rapidly once you start eating food again, but it works well I think for the pre-op diet. Remember, the surgeon wants you on the pre-op diet to shrink your liver, not necessarily to lose weight, so find something you can stick to! -
As of Today I've lost 100LBS since RNY May 12th
mtwtvl71 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Today is a great day! Today I hit the 100lbs mark. I had my RNY on May 12th and as of my weight in today I've lost 100LBS. That is just over 3 months time. I'm doing great and eating healthy every day. I'm at around 700 calories per day and walk 2 miles every morning 5 days a week. I've just started to tone and lift light weights at the gym. I feel great and can't believe that i fit into an x-large shirt now..I was 3/4XL before. THis is the best decision I've made and have 0 regrets. I feel great and have so much more energy. -
Does anyone know the name of that cable weight loss show?
LargeMediumSmall posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I caught the tail end of a cable show on obesity tonight. I think I have seen a little of it before. This poor young man had obviously lost a ton of weight with his lap band. He had gone into his docs office and requested that ALL Fluid be removed because he wanted to eat again. The doctor reluctantly agreed & said "You will be hungry." The next scene they show him a short time later at a restaurant ordering the Thanksgiving dinner. He ate it and got sick. Then he proceeded to order 3 milkshakes, 2 pieces of pie & a brownie. He claimed it was 'everything he imagined it would be.' He left the diner describing feelings of guilt, anger, & general depression. In general I hate TV shows like this because they are so dramatic but it hit a chord with me. It was quite obvious that this poor man had not come to terms with deep psychological issues and food addictions and my heart just went out to him. I had to turn it off. I don't know the name of the show but it came at an opportune time. I just had my dinner and a Weight Watchers ice cream bar for desert and it went down soooo easy. I was seriously considering another one simply for the fact that it went down easy, when I happened upon that channel. I had to ask myself which was more important, progress and being healty or 5 minutes alone with a frozen fudge bar? And what really was I trying to suplicate with that second bar? I think that show was divine intervention but I'd still like to know the name of it. I didn't have the second bar. I went and got a cup of hot tea and was fine. I think angels were around me at just the right time. Anytime I win a battle with food I am happy. Tonight I'm very happy. -
Two things about weighing yourself
isit5yet replied to nurse535's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh daily and find comfort and control in seeing it every morning. I also agree that it gives me insight in how my body changes water-wise throughout my cycle. I do not count lbs lost until I get two consecutive days at that weight, then I consider it my new weight. -
Two things about weighing yourself
mauraclegg replied to nurse535's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I weigh daily and if there is a pound more than I expect I no longer freak. If I weigh any time other than when I first wake-up it's about 2-3 lbs different; also when I go to the doc it's about 2-3 lbs higher than home. I count my losses and only worry about a gain of more than 3 lbs. -
I had 1cc removed when that happened to me the first time. I hate that for you, it's been a year and I haven't been able to get back to green since, so I've basically gained all of my weight back.

Gastric Sleeve After Lapband
IowaAndy replied to ChaChaBurch's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I also had a lapband before I was sleeved. I did not have any slipage either but I was constantly vomiting after the food would get stuck and I was tired of the constant doctor visit to have my band check and water added or removed. I had my sleeve removed by Dr F Garcia in Tijuana after my insurance carrier, BCBS refused to pay for the band removal or the sleeve procedure. I have never been so happy as I am now having the band removed and the sleeve done. I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 and the band and sleeve were all done in one procedure laproscopically. I have not have any problems since my surgery and am losing weight and on my way to the goal. I wish you all the best on your surgery. I am sure that you will do fine and you will be amazed on how much you like the sleeve vs the band.
