  1. I will be banded on March 12, 2010 during Spring Break, as I am currently in school for my RN. I have been an LPN since 2005 and decided to take the plunge and finish up my education and in the process suffered a herniated L4 disk on November 6, 2009. My doc told me that I had some major life style changes to make if I was going to be able to practice as an RN and #1 I need to drop 100 pounds. I was not in shock, I knew what he was going to say before he ever opened his mouth and I immediately began talking to people about other options besides another fad diet. That is where my journey actually began, finally coming to grips with the idea that I was powerless over my weight and that no matter how many diets I have been on in my lifetime that I needed some help. During the summer I took a nutrition class and actually dropped 40 pounds by eating healthy and exercising to only gain it back, plus some during the fall semester and let me tell you I am truly at wits end. I am very thankful to my physician for being honest and candid, but at the same time I wanted to scream at him for telling me to lose weight but also putting me on an activity restriction d/t my herniated disc. I finally have the feeling back in my left leg and have been cleared for walking only. I have been able to manage getting through college and only have one more semester left. I just hope that everything goes well with my pre-op diet and the surgery. I am 10 weeks out from surgery, and it sure seems like a lifetime away, but I am sure it will be here sooner than I think. I am really glad to have found this online support group and forum, so far what I've read has been very encouraging and I hope to add to the discussion.

    I Feel So Happy!!!!!!

Congrats on the weight loss and the attitude. I was a teacher and always posted a big banner in the front of my room; "Attitude is the Mind's paintbrush, it can Color ANY situation". It's so true! Best wishes!!!

When Do You Start To Feel The Weight Loss?

20 lbs doesn't feel like a lot, especially for those of us who need to lose a ton more weight, but here's what i recommend to get some perspective: Take 4 5lb bags of flour/sugar and try lifting them all. when you see how much 20lbs feels like, you will be euphoric with excitement that it's GONE!!!
  4. I am going thru the process waiting to get my approval and to get the date for my procedure. I should be sleeping now but i can't help it i am so nervous. I have lost weight before like everyone elso but keeping it off is the problem. I workout now and I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but I can live without it. I want to know is the pre-op shake thing for everyone or is it if your BMI is over a certain thing? I'm sure the smaller the liver the better everything goes. Also does the amount of tummy fat have to do with the pain factor also? Where the port is once you start to loose weight can you see it poking out? Does it bother you yet? What can't you eat, I know everyone is diffrent but just general ideas, also how can your band slip or should i say why would it slip? Any thing would be helpful....

    Try try again

So I've yo-yo dieted for the past 10 years since I was 16. The most I ever lost was like 25 lbs. Then I gained that back. I had my lap-band surgery in Feb of 2008. I was getting married 3 months later and wanted a jump start on weight loss. I still wish I had done it earlier. While not even close to my goal weight, I'm feeling happier and more confident. I'm having some trouble staying on program/target right now. Anyone have any suggestions??!?

    Counting Protein, Carbs?

Your protein goal seems really low. My daily goal is 70 or more. My NUT has me focused on high protein low carb eating. I am having pretty good weight loss. 54 pounds since my pre op liquid diet started the last week of January 2015.

    Counting Protein, Carbs?

My surgery was 1 Oct 2014 and from the start was told minimum of 60g of protein per day. I had heard, and now experienced first hand, that lack of sufficient protein can result in hair loss. If I am under 80g a day I notice a lot of hair loss. Keep up your protein, it not only helps with weight loss, but side effects! As for carbs I was told to keep under 15g carbs per meal.

    Liquid diet question

I have used for pre-op and also post operatively, Premier Protein, which gives 30 grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar in an 11 ounce container with a nice screw top in case I can't finish the whole thing at one time. I buy it by the case at my local Sams Club and pay $18.98 for a dozen. Price has only gone up 10 cents in the last year. Comes in vanilla or chocolate. I use the chocolate mostly but have used the vanilla for fruit shakes or just plain for a change. Two Protein drinks a day plus my new eating habits and my sleeve surgery has me feeling successful. When I decided to do the surgery I was 283. ( My normal weight was 150) but certain circumstances left me a cripple for over 10 years so I gained weight no matter what I ate. After hearing about the sleeve option, I was 276 the first time I saw the doctor and now I am 211. I probably could have lost more but had my sleeve in March 2013 and then a total hip replacement in August 2013 and that slowed my progress. After 3 days in the hospital for my hip, I then went to rehab for 37 days post surgery, so in the rehab it was nearly impossible to stick very closely to the food I needed because the kitchen either didn't cook what I needed or didn't have what I needed. Thank goodness my friend was bringing me this protein so I could stick with that regimen. These little shakes are great when you want chocolate or feel any hunger. I put them in my NutriBullet, add PB2 I buy on Amazon (I get the large bag that is shrink wrapped) and 2 ice cubes and it's very satisfying. Try this, it's a great option.
  10. Heidi, my starting stats were very similar to yours -- 5'6", 230 lbs and a BMI of 37. I was banded on October 23rd and am down 51 pounds as of this morning! I have gone from a tight size 20/1X to a 14, and am still losing and motivated. I attribute a lot of that to the benefits of being banded. The band has been a Godsend for me. Of course, I've had to watch what I'm eating and (finally) motivate to exercise, but having this little device that makes me think about what I'm eating before I stuff it in my mouth and that prevents me from overeating has been fantastic. It has kept me on the straight and narrow counteless times where, if I wasn't banded, I would have ordered the wrong thing or overeaten. I know myself well enough to know that I could not have been perfect on a normal diet for 9+ months -- much less still had the desire after 9 mos. to keep going! But, with the band, it's been so much easier. And, I know that, statistically speaking, I am going to keep off the weight this time, whereas more than 95% of regular dieters gain it all back and more. I hope you find a good solution for yourself! Feel free to check out my blog if you want to see how someone with a similar BMI & height did. I also have a link in there to Lise the Loser's blog -- she also has similar stats (and looks amazing)! Best, Catherine

    Correction 54 Pound Weight Loss

January 20- Yesterday I had my appointment with Dr. Avila and was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had actually lost 54 pounds and now weigh 175. I did have my third fill at that time as I have been feeling a little hungry between meals. He told me I was doing great with an average loss of two pounds per week. I don't go back to see him again until I feel like I need another fill. Last time he told me to come back in three months so now I really feel like I am on my own. I will try to attend some of the support meetings they have the last Wednesdays of the month when the weather gets better, to keep up with how others are doing and to have others to visit with for support. This band has been great and will be a great help when it comes to the maintenance part of the weight loss picture that other programs cannot provide. I have not missed the foods that I have not been able to eat at this point, and maybe I will be able to add some of them back anyway in small quantities later.
  12. Hi NurseHeidi. The things you mention in your post hits very close to home for me. I too have dieted all my life, joined gyms, taken numerous diet pills. The list goes on and on. I'm a nurse as well and I packed on a lot of weight just from the stress of being a nurse. I've always found solace with food. My most recent venture was joining LA Weight Loss last April, 2008. Spent over $2,000.00 on that one just for them to shut down one year later. I had lost 25 lbs on that program. Well, after that happened, I threw my hands up and claimed defeat. I have finally put a stop to the madness and have had lapband surgery April of this year. I know it's expensive. My insurance wouldn't pay for it, so I financed it myself. I figured, heck, I will finance a car, a home, my education. Why wouldn't I finance something that would benefit my health and allow me a better quality of life. Don't listen to dimwits like the one you mentioned. They haven't a clue what you've been through. Girl, you have my vote. The lapband is the way to go. Best wishes.
  13. I got banded on May 15 and have lost 30 lbs. ,without restriction. I agree with everyone else. The band is only a tool and you have to be commited to use it. I advise you to do your research. Read the good, the bad , and the ugly on this board. There are lots of successful stories and some horror stories. Most of us have been on a diet on and off all our lives. (losing weight only to gain back more) This was one of the last resorts for me. So far, I wish I had done this yrs. ago. Maybe I would have saved myself from diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. I am looking forward to feeling better and getting off most of my expensive meds. I can think of a lot better ways to spend my money. I wish you luck with whatever you decide. PS : you may want to develop a thick skin for people who make rude and flip comments to you.

    Having a hard time measuring

I was having a hard time, too, so I went to Target and got a nice digital scale. It has lots of foods built into it's database, just look it up in the booklet that comes with it, punch in the number, and it weighs the item, and tells you on the screen the nutritional information. I also use it to weigh food that's pre measured, because a lot of times the information on the package is either wrong, or the serving size is incorrect. An example of this, I bought a loaf of bread. The nutritional information panel said a serving size is x amount of grams at x amount of calories. I put a slice of bread on the scale, and it was almost twice the weight of what the package said it should be, so I was getting almost twice the calories from one slice of bread than it stated on the package. **note** This was way before restriction.....no bread for me ANYMORE! LOL! I don't weigh EVERYTHING, but I do try to weigh things the first time I buy something, just to see how close they are to what the package says. I think I've gotten better at eyeballing things since I started weighing stuff, just by seeing it on that little scale.

    Discouraged........what gives

Hey, CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK! This is not a magic wave of a wand! LOL. First of all, you have only had one fill! I don't know of anyone who really has restriction after just one or two fills, in general. I agree with the other post about recording calories and measuring food. I have a body bugg and they claim that people underestimate what they eat by as much as 40%! I do it because last year I wasn't doing it, wasn't logging food, etc., and I lost only 26 lbs all year! This year, I'm really committed and the weight is falling off. Do you exercise? That is SO important. It will really help. I exercise 5-6 days a week, but fit in 2-3 and you will see a difference. I don't see how short/tall you are, but I'm 5'8, have been banded 3.5 years, and the rumor is going around my little town that I had "something done" because SUDDENLY I'm SO thin!!! What a riot! SO, I had to lose 125 lbs before "anyone" noticed! It all depends on your body. Take a pix every month and you'll see it in your face among other places. SO, bottom line: give it a chance, give your body a chance to not be freaked out by the change, and kick some booty!!! Good Luck!

    I Feel So Happy!!!!!!

All of a sudden I just realized how happy I am!!! I was banded on February 23. I was a little scared but really wanted this. For some reason I just realized it has not been a tough road so far. Its just so doable. I dont feel like if im starving. I was on a liquid diet for 7 weeks and got my first fill on the 8th week. Not even the 7 weeks of liquids were horrible. I figured ive been stuffing my face all my life why cant I just be on a liquid diet for 7 weeks. I think the attitude has so much to do with it. I Cook huge meals for my family yet dont feel bad if I cant eat what they are eating. There are days I wish I could have lost more by now, but all of a sudden people all over are noticing that Im looking SKINNY!!! What a great feeling. Im working out so that makes me feel better. Skin is really getting loose but that has motivated me to get into the gym so that things fall into the right place when I get to my goal weight. Any way just wanted to share how Happy Ive been feeling ever since Ive been banded and wondering if everyone feels the same way. I know some people feel deprived many times after weight loss surgery. I am currently at 193 lbs. I had not been under 200 lbs for over 7 years or more....so I feel Great!!!:w00t:

    How does skinny feel?!

I'm not perfect. In fact I often have to relearn what I just learned. I've been eating wrong/behaving wrong, and physiologically fat for a lot of years. It may always be a learning process for me, and that's fine. It's an interesting journey. And I knoiw what you mean about not failing again. The lap band was my last ditch solution. I was emotionally and physically devastated by my inability to keep weight off. Remember too that after you get the band, you will still have bandster hell to go through...when you haven't yet had a fill and you can eat elephants and feel totally guilty and defeated about it. At least for me, that was true. So I was sure I was going to fail yet again. Until the restriction is right, you're still mostly living like you have no band.... It'll definitely teach you patience! Good luck and let me know when you get you band!
  20. I love to look through this site for tips, concerns, individual experiences etc., but I don't hear a lot of stories about everyones successes. I will be banded on August 27th (Yea!!!) and would love to hear about each phase and what it feels like to loose weight. Those that are toward the beginning, middle and end of their journey.:whoo:

    Start of new journey

Wee update..... Lower body lift done 09.01.10 - unbelievably sore, worse pain ever, but would do it again!!! (had vacation in Florida 6 wks after surgery - flying from Scotland - 9hr flight - did theme parks, wore bikini, felt fabulous!) 7lbs of loose skin gone 14cm at front 10cm at sides, 2cm on back. Band slipped 03.17.11 - no pain but couldn't eat or drink for 4 days. was awful..... Went to operating theatre that night, and band was put back into place. Have gained 25lbs in 2 months.... not happy...... Bariatric Team told me a patient put on 14lbs in 10 days so don't worry about my 25lbs......!!!! Band now has 3mls in it..... another fill tomorrow....... I REALLY need restriction. This extra weight is annoying the hell outta me..... although everyone says I look better, healthier etc. I admit I feel better, permanent heartburn is now gone....no night reflux.....feeling permanently cold is gone and DH prefers me like this! Gonna get rid of this 25lbs over the next 6 months.... BTW Brachioplasty hopefully in the next 6 weeks..... yay! Sadie
  22. If you don't lose weight, you are probably building muscle and that will reshape your body to fit into smaller clothing. That's so awesome..congrats to you!

    100LBs lost today!!!

Preop 1/15/09 and banded 1/30/09. I don't think anyone is more surprised by my weight loss than me. I average about 850 calories a day, but usually burn all of that off with exercise. Losing it this fast is a double edged sword. I like that it is coming off fast, but it scares me alittle. I've only had two fills( the last just two weeks ago and only .6cc). I feel alittle like a freak, but have lots of energy and no real side effects.

    Question re: why insurance deny

My BMI was too low also, I was on med for BP than Dr added a 2nd. Also I have arthritis in both knees, Eventually some day may have to be replaced. My Orthopedic Dr sent a letter also. Short blunt, (Loose weight or he may be in a wheel Chair) I have been working out since the Band and have a tons of backup evidence of compliance which many people do not have after 8 years. So if BMI is low they want to see some co-morbidity factors. And that you have done your part. But it comes down to the person reviewing you case,

is it normal to have second thoughts!

I've second guessed my decision too, believe me! But now I'm two days from surgery and there's no turning back. I know what you mean tho. Some of my coworkers said I better not get a snotty attitude once I'm skinny!!! All I'm doing is changing my health and making my body match the person I am inside. I assured them I will still be 100% me, just in a smaller package. I just want to be able to achieve the things my weight has held me back from.
