    Wow...

I just read over some of my blogs and posts. I don't even remember what its like to feel like that anymore. Today I feel good. I actually just broke up with this recent boyfriend and I feel good about having some me time. He was just drunk and said some stupid things to me. But I'm just not going to settle or put up with it. Why? Hell no am I going to be my mom. No way! Alcoholism is a serious issue. When you don't know when to stop drinking every time you drink, you shouldn't even waste your time. Since he isn't smart enough to not waste time, I'm not going to waste mine. I'm a freshman in college. Your high if you think I can't move on. :]

    Alcohol

I hear you girl !!! Every celebration there is always alcohol involved with my friends and family . This weekend my friend is having a house warming BBQ tomorrow evening of course with alcohol and next weekend my family and I are going out of town cause my little sister is graduating from college so I'm sure we will celebrate after with dinner and drinks . So I'm thinking to just have one drink at each event surely it won't be too bad. :-/ I went to church this past Sunday and went to communion and without thinking about it I accidentally took a pretty good sized drink of the wine it went down smooth but I did get a lil buzz a minute there in church but it didn't last too long haha !!!

    Alcohol

My instructions were to avoid alcohol for one year post-surgery because it can cause an ulcer. However, I started having an occasional glass of wine, about once a week, about 1&1/2 months out. I don't notice that I get drunk or sober any differently than pre/-surgery. But I was always a cheap date! LOL! pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2
  6. Have you seen 60 min? They have done studies that demonstrate the addictive properties in consuming sugar. Sugar is also consumed by cancer gulped also. I know that I am going to make more of an effort to stay away from processes foods. Fruit drinks are the worst. If u haven't seen 60 min maybe go to the website and see it. This is really scary and makes alot of sense.

    My therapist said.....

I was told that I definitely WOULD become an alcoholic. So far, I'm not. I see a therapist for my food issues as well. It's amazing how much of our lives and our minds are tied up in food. I'm working really hard to become addicted to exercise. I think that would be my best bet!

    Alcohol

Considering I hate the taste of alcohol, I'm 8 months out and haven't had a drink. But I guess that doesn't help you much...lol

    Alcohol after surgery

I am wondeing why you are allowed alcohol at all right now, but I see now that you had your surgery three years ago. It contains sugar that your pouch should not have. I was told not to have it for at least a year. I had a sleeve 5 1/2 yrs. ago and also waited a year before having any but sugar is not good if you have had RNY.
  10. Do you have to have the upper GI test done on an empty stomach? I have scheduled my drug/alcohol screening (required by insurance) for late Friday afternoon, and I would like to be able to get the upper GI test done at the same time, if possible. My surgeon's office didn't tell me anything about it, just that I had to get my PCP to order it and have the results sent to the surgeon's office.

    Post Op Medical Care

My PCP has been involved with me getting approved, so I still see her for my other issues. I see my surgeon every 3 months for a check up of the suture site and check my weight loss. He does labs now every time I go but that just started. The labs he does also checks to make sure I'm getting the vitamins recommended and if I need to add any or can stop any. His office provides weekly online meetings and face to face meetings plus I see a therapist once a month for my mental health issues and am involved in AA for my drugs and alcohol recovery. I see my dietician every time I go too and can call them anytime. These regular checks by my surgeons office is until I reach my goal weight. Then he will see me once a year.

    Forbidden foods and Drinks?

Only during the healing, and initial losing stage were certain foods and drinks prohibited. I had a 3 month wait on raw veggies, fruits, and nuts. Alcohol was also a 3 month wait, but my surgeon preferred that we wait until goal to start indulging in alcoholic beverages due to the empty calories. As for after hitting goal, I have zero food or drink restrictions. I have drank soda, which some surgeons say they are forever off the list of drinks, since being around 6 months out. I really do eat and drink anything I want or need. I live a life of moderation at this point, and have since being at goal. It's just works for me.

    Drinking

I agree. I have heard that it is far too easy to trade one addiction for another. That said, I feel sure that there are plenty of people out there that can enjoy a glass of wine or a beer every now and then. Alcohol is not important to me and I may never try it. i have also heard that if you do drink, use caution. It will hit you much quicker and harder than it did before surgery.
  14. Can we ever have carbonated drinks again? My friend had the gastric bypass done...and she was not allowed carbonated drinks or alcohol for a year.. Is this the same for the vertical sleeve? I enjoy a rum and diet coke with lime every now and then....*sigh*
  15. My psych also specializes in children and adolescents but I've been with him over 8 years now and I wouldn't want to change. At this point we're just in medication management. He asks me how I'm feeling and about my family situation (he also saw my ex-husband while we were married and he talks with me about my 20 yo son's drug and alcohol abuse). He accepts my insurance so that's not a factor for me. I only see him every 3 months to make sure the meds are still working. It's "medication maintenance". Maybe you could ask your doctor if he could write you 90 day scripts and just see you every three months. That will help with the costs and from what I hear from friends who see psychs for med maintenance it's normal practice. It's what my insurance will cover as well. Let him know it's what you'd like and see how he responds. Then you can make a decision to stay there or move on. Good luck!

    food addict I'm not sure

Hi OP - There's no real evidence to suggest 'food addiction' exists*, but it's a highly American (especially) way of separating harmful behaviors from the self. Unfortunately, alcohol and narcotics are very different from food, and as such, it's it theorized understanding eating disorder as 'addiction' isn't helpful. You already got a lot of helpful answers in your previous threads about eating disorders (which certain do clinically exist), did you get a chance to reflect on whether that may be something to look into? *https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0149763414002140

    Pre-op Psych and Nutrition Evals

They vary .... my psych eval I answered about 300 questions from the MMPI test, then had a brief (15 minute) discussion w/a psychologist about addiction, drinking, illegal drug use, my childhood, etc. Nutritionist was even less problematic; she told me I'd need to eat Protein, I told her I could lose weight but always got bored, that was it! While they do vary, the gist is they want to make sure you can follow a band diet and aren't likely to freak out,. or turn to gambling, alcohol, or some other obsessive behavior to replace food. Just be honest and you'll be fine.
  18. Good luck! I'm about four months into my journey, but I had to change surgeons so I really started with the current surgeon on June 29th and I'm down 25.2 pounds as of last Friday. I've been able to follow what the nutritionist is saying, cutting out fried foods, starchy veggies, fast food, and alcohol. It has been a major adjustment but I'm finally ready for the change.
  19. Probably a bad idea. My mother in law suggested it to me before my banding....LOL. I would stay away from alcohol. Gatorade makes a Protein Drink...it is called repair. It is clear. Not too bad and it got me through before surgery...the bummer is that it is too sweet for me now, even watered down. Good Luck!! Rachael

    Turning 21 in 3 months

I was told NO alcohol...like EVER! one sip and you will be on your butt because your body cannot tolerate it, beside the wasted calories... if you haven't started, I say DON'T... your doctor may be different, but there are no benefits from alcohol... you may want to wait until after your birthday to have it done if you are intent on partying like that...

    Pain meds

Well it depends I definitely needed them while in the hospital (2 days) . I was sent home with liquid Lortab and "needed" it for a few days but it was not until a couple of weeks later (2nd refill) that I noticed that I was having an issue... I found I was using it only at night to relax and feel good. Kinda like I used food before... I never had a problem with drugs or alcohol. But my mother is an alcoholic (recovering) and my brother was a functioning drug addict. I'm glad you are thinking about this ahead of time, I did not.

    Post op weight loss

If I drink alcohol I don't lose weight. And you should know better than to drink anything carbonated. You're just asking for trouble! Have you been going to your doctor regularly? Monthly follow up for the first 2 years is the key to success. Your doctor can't help you if you don't go to him and tell him everything you're experiencing.

What are 'sliders' that ppl refer to

More examples of Slider Foods/Drinks: chocolate, Ice-cream, Frozen yoghurt, Milo (chocolate shakes), alcohol
  24. You should be ok to go just plan your eating which will be almost nothing and no alcohol if it's that type of wedding.
  25. I just called my bariatric nurse line and verified with them what I can take. There's nothing I can't really take, but have to be careful with anti-inflammatory medicine and I might be extra sensitive to the sugar and alcohol in some of the cough medicines, but was told to dilute it. Thanks for the suggestions =)
