I had my gastric sleeve surgery on Dec 2nd. In the beginning I was satisfied with only having 4 tbls of food. Once I got to my second week, I started having problems with eating anything. Now at almost 3 weeks out, I eat even less because my tummy feels upset all the time. It takes all I have to get a yogurt down for breakfast. The thought of eating makes me nauseous. I'm lucky if I can get 30 oz of water and any food in every day. Is this normal and when will it go away?

Sleeved 7/31 whats everyone eating?
marfar7 replied to Esmeralda75's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 5 1/2 weeks out and on soft foods (after a long 4 weeks of liquids). I eat alot of chili, mashed potatoes, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, turkey deli meat, and cottage cheese. I'm also bored. I want a big (make that little!) juicy steak, a salad, grilled chicken, and bread. I know, I don't want much, right? LOL You're doing great. I've lost 17 lbs, gaining and losing the same 1 lb over the past week. I started at 174 on july 16th so I know it'll come off lsower than say someone who started at 250 (which was my orginial weight when banded 4 yrs ago). I had the same dr also. 3 hrs away. Thats sucks but I really luv my dr so it's fine. The dr in my town doesn't take my insurance (Medicare, they only cover Centers of Excellence). Good luck to you. Expand ur eating so ur not so bored. I luv me some chili with a little melted sharp cheddar on top! Dip some melba toast in it...yummo -
How long did u do the puree stage for?
Beadingnurse replied to groovearmada's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My plan says 1-2 weeks for pureed and I am in the second week of that. I try small amounts of soft foods but I am able to accept so little that I am not having a lot of soft foods. For instance, I scrambled 1 egg for myself for Breakfast today and I could only eat about 1/2 of it and then I felt REALLY full...almost uncomfortably so. I had an Atkins shake (liquid) for lunch and followed that about an hour later with about 3 oz of Greek yogurt. I am planning to have some sort of brothy or pureed Soup for dinner. My doc said to judge the diet progression on how you feel and that it is better to stay with a "level" longer than to push yourself to accept foods that don't feel right. Let your body be the judge! My body quickly and profoundly tosses back out anything it isn't ready for! -
But damn I didn't know how much it SUCKS! I'm only 3 weeks out. I lost 10 my first week, 2 my second week and none this week. I only weigh in on Wednesdays. I'm trying really hard to stay positive. I'm scared that this isn't going to work for me, or that I'm going to be a slow loser. How can I lose 85% of my stomach and eat nothing but puréed food, yogurt and liquids and not lose weight. I feel like the whole "your body is in starvation mode" or "new muscle weighs more than fat" is one of those things I used to tell myself in my old dieting days to make myself feel better. I'm also on my period so I've been using the "I must have water weight" theory too. But at 800-1000 calories/day how can this be? So frustrated.

LilMissDiva's boot camp
Oregondaisy replied to Carrie's Journey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yoplait and Dannon both have Greek Yogurt that are fairly low carb. The Yoplait has 8 carbs and I think the Dannon has 10 I've tried Carb smart before and I thought tasted really bland. It didn't have much flavor. -
I know this comes up a lot, but I can't find what I'm looking for. I'm planning to start the boot camp tomorrow to kick my carb cravings. She says you can have all Protein (meat, fish, nuts, dairy, etc), lots of Water, green veggies, no fruit... Do you think that includes nonfat Greek yogurt that's fruit-flavored? It doesn't specify a carb max, which is why I ask. The yogurt I have has about 20 g carb. Anyone done this the whole 5 days successfully?

Mushies

Cottage cheese is a very textured mushie, maybe try thin mashed potatoes or yogurt first. Also make sure your taking small bites and waiting between bites -
HELP!! I SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO THIS!!!!
MAKF replied to meggspeggs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am surprised at how much I can eat sometimes. then other times I barely get down 1/4 cup of broth. I am trying to live by the moto of eat healthy and what the family is eating minus bread/starches of any kind. so yesterday I ate 1 scrambled egg-Breakfast then mandrian orange snack and lunch was 1/4 of spinach and 1 babybell cheese and snack was some pepperonis (5 slices) then dinner was 1/4 cup of pad thai. when Iam eating it I am feeling like OMG that is a ton of Food but then I lay it out in my fitness pal ticker and see it is less then 600 calories. so if you evaluate the calories really you have only consumed about 200 calories. if you are chewing throughly (to baby food like consistancy) and eating VERY slowly ( 20 or more minutes) then 200 calories is not at all bad. try greek yogurt instead of pudding for more protien. the Dannon seems the best to me. How is your energy and weightloss going? can you drink morethen 4 oz of Liquids at a time? talk soon, Mel -
I regreted my surgery for the first 4 weeks. Hang in there, I promise it gets better. I was required to stay on 3 Protein drinks and 2 yogurts a day for the first 4 weeks. I stoppped losing weight because I couldn't force down half of that and was in starvation mode. The thought of eating made me want to barf. I am now using EAS CarbControl drinks. They have 17 grams of protein. I drink about 2 a day. It takes me over an hour to drink one but I force myself to. I am also chewing two gummie adult multi vitimens a day. Can use switch to gummies? They might be easier on the stomach. What type of diet does the dr having you doing?

Yay! Mushy Food Here I Come!
raven8888 replied to raven8888's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I get a chance I want to scan in the diet and how my NUT is showing us tricks to sneak in as much protien per meal. Great ideas she has. She also gave us a couple pages of recipes to try. I was able to eat thier bariatric suppliment, white cheddar cheese chips, today (with the strict rule to chew it down to apple sauce) But it was such a great feeling to chew and feel something crunchy. It's a small bag only 1.5 oz and I could only eat half. I finally feel that "real" full feeling and I am totally satisfied. Now it is a matter of getting the most bank for my buck so to speak with protien. She has us adding 1/4 cup of non-fat powdered milk to anything we can fit it into as well as skim or soy milk, which gives any shake, soup, smoothie, mashed potatoes, etc an extra 12 grams of protien for the dry milk and 8grams from skim milk, and even a scoop of unflavored protien, greek yogurt etc. So basicly if you use one cup of skim milk and 1/4 cup of dry powder milk and mix with a scoop of nectar protien powder lets say and fruit you can get a smoothie at 43 grams of protien! That is just one example, I'm kind of getting my crunchy fix out of the way first today and maybe tonight try a noodleless lasagna!!! yay!! Time to get creative, so many more options with meat, fruit, starches, and veggies now. . -
I wasn't doing any solids so soon but Writergirl's experience is similar to mine- liquids have always gone down easily, I was told 1/3 cup at a time and that goes down easily as long as I chew well if it's solid and I can eat more than that of things like yogurt or pureed soups. Early on I did chicken salad rather than straight chicken to give it a little extra moisture to help it go down. My thought is if you aren't feeling discomfort, you aren't over-eating your sleeve. For me it always boils down to one bite- the bite that pushes me over into discomfort if I take it. Funny how one mouthful is the difference between good and not good post-sleeve. Sounds like you're doing great! Congrats.

Hi everyone, I was sleeved on March 15th, 2012 and must say that I have had a dream run so far. Not much pain, lots of energy / able to take long walks, and most importantly 14 pounds lost since surgery… My problem is that I am now worried that I feel so well ( how ironic is that?) and may not have as much restriction as I need… Therefore, could someone please reassure me that it is quite normal to/ or that they can? eat a 170g (approx 6 ounce) light and fit yogurt without discomfort and over a 5 minute time period (only slightly longer than usual for me and maybe just because I am paying attention)? Be able to drink a glass of water (6 oz) without hindrance and quite normally? Eat 2.5oz of chicken salad with only a slight hit of gaseous pain? ( I was told to feel full after 2-5 tablespoons) Drink a 8oz protein shake comfortably in 10 minutes? My worry is that I have never felt fully restricted yet. It may be because I am misreading some gas pain and that they are actually fullness pains… That being said, I am satisfied with what I eat and am not craving food (so freeing to not be hungry!!!!) and have had very successful weightless so far. Am I worrying about nothing? All the very best, Harmonic

License to eat- interesting problem
Kindle replied to Shiner86's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am trying to slow down my weight loss, but really can't eat more than I already am, so I am trying to add more healthy fat and carb calories. Here's some things you may try in your mushy stage.... Eat regular cottage cheese and Greek yogurt, not low fat. Make your shakes with whole milk. Eat avacodos and mashed sweet potatoes. Drink organic juices, instead of crystal light or other SF drinks. Add a banana or other fruit to your Protein shakes. -
One week postop what do you and drink now
lovealways replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2 weeks out tomorrow and will FINALLY (I repeat, FINALLY) be able to have some food...even if it is pureed. I was told to stay away from cream-based soups, so I will be pureeing a lot of minestrone chicken noodle type soups as well as lentil soup. I will also be having scrambled eggs tomorrow and very mashed egg salad with FF mayo. I also plan on having butternut squash mashed real good and mashed potatoes. I don't plan on blenderizing EVERYTHING, because that's nasty, but I plan on doing what I can, and then just chewing chewing chewing the soft foods to an almost pureed consistency. I tried greek yogurt, and I loved it before surgery, but it seems to sweet for me. I just want SALT!! -

One week postop what do you and drink now
vbgirl264 replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personally I am starting with a scrambled egg and I think blended chicken salad for lunch. I found a recipe that replaces the mayo with Greek yogurt. And blended chili for dinner. The other things on my list I could choice from we're low sugar yogurts, sugar free pudding, blended meats, tuna salad, egg salad, cream of wheat, rice, or oatmeal. -
So as my menu expands, I've noticed that is harder to get the protein in. Today I had ham w low fat fetta cheese on an ultrathin half of a small pita. Since I need to chew until is completely pureed, I was a quarter through and I wasn't enjoying it anymore. I was 'tired' and eating the whole thing seemed daunting. I got rid of it and made myself the equivalent of protein grams w a shake. It was much better. Same thing happened yesterday w/ a quarter cup of mini shrimp and avocado. The food sits well in my tummy. It just seems like so much work to eat anything other than yogurt, protein shakes, cottage cheese, and lentils. I am 3 weeks out. Has this happened to anyone?

My nut said to use dry powder milk to double protien during first couple of weeks use in soups, cerials, and anything like yogurt. I only have to do one protien shake And I found out why I stalled...to few calories lol never been told in my life I wasn't eating enough lol

Graduated To Pureed Food!
LittleRed30 replied to SleeveShelly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not supposed be on liquids until next tuesday but i've had it with broth/jello and crystal light. yesterday I got a smoothie from BK (mango) and it took me hours to finish 75% of it... not much protein but it sure made a difference. today i'm getting greek yogurt and some sf jello. my body needs fuel to function thats for sure. -
I was slightly lactose intolerant prior, but now it is bad. I don't throw up but it makes me have the runs something awful. Yogurt and pudding were to be my strength. Now, I suffer if I eat them. Do you think we could take Lactaid? I bought Lactaid milk, but it sounds gross. I'll talk to my surgeon next Thursday and post results. Good luck!

I usually am pretty hungry, but too tight to eat anything- usually by 11-1130 I can eat. Do you feel like nauseous? That's probably cause you're really hungry, try drinking something-along with your coffee if you drink it. Or try a protein shake/ greek yogurt- it's "liquid" but will help with the hunger.
-
Liquids slide right through. You are fine! Put your thumb and forefinger together to make an "O." That's about how big the passage is. Of course liquids can flow through easily. I was told that things like yogurt, applesauce, etc., will have the same effect -- they will flow through easily and as a result, you may become hungry somewhat quickly. I was banded on the same day that you were. My doctor does things very differently than many here, I am finding. I was told to start mushies two days after banding. (I really could not stomach that thought until today though, when I started feeling very 'normal' and hunger resumed to a slight degree.) I have no idea why my doctor's office is so different. They just call themselves "progressive." LOL. But you should stick with your own doctor's advice. I think you actually lose a lot of weight on the liquid diet, vs. those of us who start mushies fairly early, so that is one benefit. Anyway, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Being able to consume a lot of liquid doesn't mean your band slipped. After all, they want us to consume about 64 oz of Fluid per day. They wouldn't recommend that if it would mean a possible slippage.

I would say 1 yogurt, some refried beans and 1/4 c cottage cheese. It was difficult to eat still.
