    Anyone gaining A LOT?

Rain: Everyone's weight gain is totally different. I have friends who gained 30 lbs in the first trimester and then leveled off at a total of 35 lbs for the whole pregnancy. I have another friend who didn't put on anything until almost 24 weeks! I'm due on Sunday and to date, I've gained 35 lbs... today is the first day I haven't worked and I'm a little nervous about gaining a few pounds between now and my delivery date since I'm not as active as I am when working and boredom can contribute to eating when not hungry! Karen, losing half of a 60 lb weight gain after delivery is unrealistic so don't beat yourself up about it. During delivery, you should lose the weight of the baby (7-8 lbs), the placenta (1-2 lbs) , the amniotic Fluid (2 lbs), and perhaps some blood and Water (3-5 lbs). That's a maximum of about 15 pounds... delivering the baby doesn't make us lose the extra fat stores we put on over the course of the pregnancy. I'm in a similar situation to you as I've lost over 110 lbs and was at goal for years before I got pregnant. I had a *very* hard time with seeing myself grow larger with the pregnancy. I maintained my 3-4x/week workouts up until week 33 but since then, I've just relied on the 2 mile walks I'd get from commuting to NYC. The good thing for all of us is that we've got the tools and the drive and we already know how to get the weight off again. Here's to HEALTHY babies and happy moms who keep our kids active :frown:
  2. I have had hypothyroidism all my adult life (am 52) and take Oroxine or Thyroxine. I only gain weight if I'm not getting enough of it. From what others have said here Synthoid is the same ( I don't think it's a brand we have DownUnder). It's the condition that causes weight gain, not the medication. Re thyroid cancer, Hashimoto's followed later by thyroid cancer certainly runs in my family... so I've grown up believing managing your thyroid function diligently was important. So many doctors just read the numbers off your blood test results without applying any other thought processes - how they think they can call themselves specialists and do that is beyond me. I could a child to diagnose me if that is all that is required - the "normal range" is always right alongside if your own result. But that's not just all there is to it, so if you don't feel well don't let your specialist get away with doing that to you! The "normal range" applies to the population, not to individuals - your personal TSH, T3 and T4 ideal levels don't travel up and down within the "normal range" (although they do change a bit with stress, weather, weight and activity levels). If you are inside the normal range but have symptoms of thyroid dysfunction then you are probably not at your correct level. I don't function well at either the high or low end of the supposed normal range, and need to be smack bang in the middle. Others do better at one end or the other. Join your country's Thyroid Association and you'll get great access to sensible information and articles - the Australian Thyroid Association is brilliant at empowering patients, and I've often printed off articles to share with my doctor. It always allows us to have a very sensible discussion about how well I feel and what contribution - if any - my thyroid function might be making to that. Good luck.

Lapband To Sleeve- Have Some Questions :)

I ask about Sleeve with band because they perform plication with band. I was curious why they didn't do this with the sleeve... some people mention they don't feel full with the sleeve or weight gain. I always felt like my band didn't work like it should because my upper pouch would fill and then my lower stomach would still be "hungry". search "failed sleeve" or "weight gain after sleeve" you'll see lots of people mention they were revisions. Also- my surgeon lets you choose the size of your sleeve.

    Weight Gain After Exercising

For the last few weeks I have been working 5 days a week including working out with a personal trainer. Since I have stepped up with my exercising I have been gaining weight instead of losing. I have gained 3 pounds and I'm feeling discouraged! Did anyone else have this problem after stepping up and working out more? Do I need more calories ?

    Body Dysmorphia

I have such a similar story as many of you. When I was in high school and college (the 1st time ), I was 125 pounds and 5'5". People told me I looked ill and needed to gain weight, to me this was crazy, because 125 is the "ideal" weight for my height. I thought I looked similar to how I looked at my heaviest of 244. Years later, after starting my steady weight gain, I saw a photo of myself and was mortified. I looked awful, my eyes were sunken in, and I was a strange shade of grey. I told myself I would never allow myself to feel the way I felt when I was thinner. I gained weight for the next 20 some years and didn't think I looked horrible. I knew I should lose a few pounds, but it wasn't until seeing another photograph of myself that reality yet again hit me....I was huge. So here I am today, and have been losing "just 10 more pounds" for the last 25 pounds or so. I am steadily around 130 pounds and until a week ago, I wanted to lose "just 10 more pounds." A week ago my 14 year old daughter told me I looked really pale and my eyes looked funny. At that point I weighed about 126. That was my awakening, and I realize that I may never feel like I look thin. I have three teenage daughters, and I am terrifed that at least two of them have body dismorphic disorder. Maybe if I get them help now, they can overcome it. Good luck to everyone on your journey!!!
  6. I am mostly a lurker and will add my opinion when it might differ from someone else's. That said, I love forum and all of the information that I've absorbed. I'm 15-days post op. I had a conversion from a stomach staple to a RNY. Before my surgery, I read everything I could and totally expected to have post op pain, issues with eating, and emotional days. This seems to the be the norm? Well, the day after surgery, the doctor came to see me and I asked him if they actually did something other than poke seven holes in me. He proved it later by having me take the standard "leak" x-ray. I saw the surgery and the pouch. I felt great - a little tired, but overall pretty good. I had surgery on a Wed and went home Fri morning. The doctors and nurses were amazed at how I bounced back from the surgery. The next Monday, I started working every day from home. The following Monday, I'm back at work (I have a desk job). Yesterday, I walked two miles and this morning, I already have one mile under my belt. I started my pureed diet yesterday and had a half cup of chili. I have had no issues with food tolerations whatsoever. I've also started enjoying yogurt - before my surgery, I hated yogurt. Now, I look forward to my yogurt and plan to have yogurt become a regular part of my diet. Has anyone else had a great recovery? Oh...I just thought - I'm probably jinxing myself by writing this. So now the stupid part. I would say that sweets, pastries, ice cream pretty much contributed to most of my weight gain. I'm an addict. Because I'm a diabetic (surprise!), my surgeon recommended the RNY surgery instead of the sleeve. This was good news to me because I knew that sugary foods caused dumping. From prior experience, I know that if a food makes me sick, I won't eat it - no matter how good it is. A week before surgery, I read that only 80% of people will dump. OH NO! My luck, I would be in the 20%. So, I had to test it out. I had to know! There was no getting around it. Did my research. I know that every meal should less than 10 grams of sugar. I found a candy with 14 grams of sugar. I didn't want to make myself too sick. I ate it. Good News! I'm a member of the 80%! I felt sick to my stomach, there was some stomach discomfort, dizzy, light headed, and then I started sweating. I felt terrible! I still have the headache. I felt like - wow, if this little candy does this to me.....never again do I want to feel this way. And I know I got a small dose of what could happen. So I'm good. I know. Will I tell the nut or RN at my next check up, probably not. Ok, am I the only one who had to test it out?
  7. I completely understand the regain of weight after hitting our low weight or our goal. The biggest problem is that we graze and I am seeing grazing on a daily basis in my practice. I am a Family Medicine doctor and have been working on my own regain of 30#s in the last 2 years. I started with logging every morsel of food along with a rating of how hungry I am when I am eating it. Also assigning an emotion to the process. Day in and Day out I saw that I was eating out of good and bad emotions, but nothing having to do with hunger. So I started back at day 1 and went back to Protein shakes and am in the process of getting my act back together. What I have noticed with my patients is that we are all struggling with the lack of control we have in our lives. I think we have to embrace that and accept that we can only control our own actions and we need to be our own best friend first. The average weight gain among my patients in the last 3 months (since lockdown started in NV) has been 9-11 lbs. I finally had a couple of people last week who had lost weight with a great deal of effort on their part. The comment I loved the best was from Bev, who is 93 -- She said she wished her refrigerator had never learned English because it practices it all night! I completely agree, so now I am ignoring my refrigerator and planning out every day. The one think I know is accountability. That is really important so find someone you trust and can be honest with and ask for their help.

    Weight gain

Lab band 1 year ago. Lost 14 kg then stalled. Had to deal with a wedding and families visiting. Gained 2 kg. Any suggestions.
  9. I passed my psyche eval just have my EGD, FINAL DIETARY CONSULT, AND A1C reduction (9.9 needs to be below 9) to go. I've been put on jardiance for a1c. When I first started this I lost 6 pounds in 1 month but have gotten sick twice since then and couldn't exercise. Been trying to stick to the dietary changes and I joined a gym but haven't been able to go much. Fell off the treadmill (lol) and work. I don't think I've lost honestly think I'm back to my original wait the one I've been stuck on for 10 years 246. I am doing this because I'm tired of my diabetes. I think my husband is scared of either me dying or me leaving him. I feel he needs counseling for prevailing issues of infidelity (i think this is why he thinks I want to do this.keep trying to explain it's not about him or what he's done..he doesn't understand that Ive tried weightloss exercise and all but I'm still sick)anyway. My doc says it's pretty similar to gall bladder surgery which I had 2 years ago ( I apparently took a swing at the nurse trying to wake me up..fun time). This year I've had to deal with cancer and a possible IUD related miscarriage of sorts among other things. Im thinking of making regular psych appointments so that the stress won't get me back here. After talking to people that seems to be the trend that causes relapse into weight gain. I've checked my nervous eating tendencies over a year ago. This is rambling a bit but I'm trying to remember it all. The closer I get the more nervous and scared I get about it. Sent from my SM-J737A using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. Don't give up on yourself. If your hungry all the time, it may be that you have alot of acid in your stomach. Check with you surgeon to see if you can take a PPI (prilosec). I was always hungry and I started taking prilosec and I'm not hungry anymore. How many calories are you consuming on your liquid diet? Are you getting enough protein? Are you exercising at all, like walking? Have you lost inches? Hang in there, it will happen..... Kaiser educated on the dangers of drinking of alcohol. Some weight loss patients have died from drinking alcohol. How manydrinks they had, I don't really know. Also, alcohol can contribute to weight gain.

    Stalled weight

Try to include some form of meditation as well. Stress can cause physiological changes that can cause weight gain just like a caloric surplus.

    Getting really close

I have a gastric bypass RNY the following Thursday (22nd) and I've been on the pre-op diet for a week. I'm starving hungry too and also feeling anxious about the surgery. Covid means I have to go to the hospital on my own too and no visitors for the 2 nights I'm there - I agree having to be on my own is very daunting. I'm just trying to hold it together by reminding myself why I'm doing this - steady weight gain, yo yo dieting for years, high bp, arthritis, pre-diabetes. If I postpone it now, all routine ops here might be cancelled till who knows when if covid accelerates more, so I think as my decision is made, it's best to just do it now. Good luck!

    Following the Rules...(?)

I follow the basic band rules, because aside from losing weight, I do not want to cause any damage to the surgery. It was a big and expensive step to take, and I want to protect it. When I say the "basic" rules, I mean small bites chewed well, sticking to small portions, listening closely for the signal to stop, not drinking 1/2 hour before or after a meal, no carbonation, NSAIDs (for the most part). I was told no straws or gum, but I have zero issues with either one. As for the portions, my band dictates that....which pretty much stays in the 1/2-1cup measurement. I don't actually measure, but I can eyeball it when I put whatever in the bowl or on the plate. No matter what is on the plate, I stop when signaled. The other rules....well, I guess they're more behavioral changes they try to instill. Things like keeping a food journal and tracking calories. In the beginning, I tracked calories daily. Once I got to the green zone, I stopped. The band tells me all I need to know, and as long as I'm still losing, it's working. I feel completely FREE since I stopped tracking, and no longer worry about eating to the point of weight gain.
  15. Did anyone gain weight in the purée stage if so how much?

Totally frustrated and don't know what to do

Yes, that's exactly what he thinks. He thinks he's given me all the necessary time to devote to getting myself in shape, so he doesn't understand why it's not my #1 priority in life. Getting in shape and looking good so I don't want to hide in the house all the time is "putting my marriage and him first". He views my whole weight gain as me not loving him enough to want to look good for him, to put us back on the path of an intimate relationship, etc. I understand that, but I've resisted doing anything "for him" because of the tough love approach he has taken as his way of "encouraging me". I would get a job, but I want the weight gone first. We have enough money that I can have the surgery, and I even have my own money with an advisor, I just hate doing this behind his back. And once I do it, I doubt he will respect me not wanting the world to know. He's all about having integrity and being honest. Ugh I can't stop crying about all this

    Weight Gain

I'm 16 months post op and haven't lost a thing in 6 months! I've been having a terrible time with low blood sugar (they think I might have reactive hypoglycemia). Whenever I get these lows I feel ravenous and eat more than I normally would! I feel like an epic failure. I want to get back on track and I've tried, but every time I try to eat like I did before having these low blood sugar episodes I get the episodes again. It's a vicious cycle! I'm discouraged and ready to give up on ever being a normal weight again.

    Should I start over?

Actually the trauma from childhood was something different, my parents were killed several years ago while I was an adult..but that's beside the point..but just wanted to clear that up. Shirley, you made alot of sense and you're probably right. I just didn't feel like I should lie, it's not in my character. I did want to make sure I was making the right choices and answering all questions as honest as possible. I was under the impression they would help me through everything and that any tests wouldn't rule out surgery but help them to help me???? The psych knew most of my weight gain was because I quit smoking 8 years ago (35 pound gain) then I developed a rare autoimmune disease and was on steroid treatment for a long time and gained 70 more. So why he felt my past trajedies were related, I'm not sure. I do want to have the right mind set, therefore the therapy. I just still have issues with the fact that I haven't met my surgeon who should have already followed up with me about the procedure I had that will determine if I even get to have lapband or not and they won't return my calls. I think that's unprofessional and makes me wonder what my follow up care would be like.

My Journey from VSG to MGB

Great story! I wish you much success. I am working on this too. In states with insurance. I was sleeved 9/2014. My issue is not just weight gain. I have sever GERD. It's just sucks. I am in pain most of the day. However, I believe it will be resolved. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. Hi I am to going to have a sleeve to bypass revision due to serve GERD and hiatal hernia. I also have AETNA. Did you say you did not have to do the 3 or 6 month program again? I'm really hoping I don't have too. I do have a bmi of 40. I did have some weight gain back from the sleeve. Look forward to hearing from you 😊
  21. What I mean by sleep eating is waking up in the middle of the night and digging in the fridge for whatever and eating, not realizing you did it till you wake up and see a spoon with Peanut Butter residue or bread crumbs, etc. I did this alot before I was banded. I know for a fact that eating at night or while I practically slept (cuz I really had no idea I did it till the morning) contributed alot to my weight gain past few years. I almost started to slip once since I was banded but I figured out a way that will make sure this won't happen to me till I can retrain my brain and it out of my system. Sounds crazy but I have gotten a bike chain with a combination and have my husband and son lock the fridge at night. I refuse to know the combination. :huytsao I put Cereal and peanut butter, (my biggest night food) in the fridge so that it won't jump in my sleepy mouth. Funny thing is, I don't eat these items or ate them during the daytime, only at night when I wasn't aware. It's working. No weight re-gain yet and no night sleep walk eating. Anyone experiencing this weird late night occurance, sleep disturbance?

    Intimate

It is amazing for fertility. The question I would like to ask is did you have a sex drive before weight gain?
  23. Definitely don't freak out. Some people actually show a weight gain the first week because of the gas and fluids from the surgery. It's basically too early to know much of anything in terms of what to expect. For what it's worth, my surgeon told me not to pay any attention to my weight/loss, just focus on getting enough protein and water and taking my vitamins and doing exercise (my knees are pretty bad, so I don't do much in the way of exercise). Of course I weigh myself and keep track of my loss, but please be aware that this is a long haul--there will be (frustrating) stalls along the way, when you won't lose despite the fact that you are eating what seem to be very tiny calorie counts. Don't worry about the stalls, either--your body will catch up and you'll start showing losses again. Hang in there. So far, you're doing great!
  24. @@JamieLogical I believe none of us are exempt from weight gain. I have talked to my nurse from my surgeons office. Her opinion was patients that have gained weight may feel guilt or shame and don't report back on Dr's appointments or continue support. Being isolated most will have a substantial weight gain. I know my behaviors can slip back. Sometimes I need a reality check by the senior members. I also get inspiration from people that are currently dropping weight.
  25. ChereS, I showed up at my pre-op appt 5 lbs heavier than when I had seen my surgeon 2 months prior. He said to make sure I followed my pre-op surgery diet so my liver would shrink before my surgery (which was 6 days after). Like others have stated, just do the clear liquids. It's only before and after the surgery. For me, that's 6 weeks (which is over in 9 days!!!) but it is well worth it considering the trade-off. Hang in there. I was just as nervous about the weight gain as you are now but it really does depend on the surgeon. 5lbs shouldn't be a no-go but don't gain any more. Just think about how good you are gonna look when you start losing that weight! Let us know how it goes. Good luck and happy shrinking!!!
