Accountability Post .... Being honest with yourself
MandoGetsSleeved posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Taking my own advice - Hold myself accountable. Surgery 10/2020, HW somewhere in the 280's. Low weight 165 ... Current weight 175.... Why? Here's why... Last day tracked January 19th Last regular/daily tracking November 2021 Last day registered weighing - January (I still do weigh almost daily though) Eating/drinking (including alcohol) whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted - "Justified" it by telling myself "It's ok, I can't eat that much of whatever... and I'm drinking low calorie alcohol. All of this equals close to 10lb overall gain in a fairly short period of time. Failing to address it now will simply put me back where I started. If you've been at all successful in this journey, you know what works and what doesn't - Don't lie to yourself and pretend everything is fine and end up with a 20lb gain - Mentally 5 was my threshold and we see how that worked out. For me at least, I don't want to feel ashamed that I worked so hard only to fail in the long run. Today, back on track, I have no doubt that I will fall off the wagon again, but hey... it's a marathon, not a sprint. I WILL track food and drink - even if it's not something on my plan. I WON'T lie to myself. I'll set realistic/attainable goals. I WON'T do anything drastic (for me) like liquids only for x number of days - It isn't sustainable and results with me doing stupid things. -

I love you for this reply! Thank you for telling me it is water weight, it probably is. I haven't had a good bm since then either. I am pushing fluids today and I have lemons at home that I will add tonight. Good luck on your diet, you can do it. I had cut out caffeine 2 weeks prior and sugar one week prior and I do believe that helped me to adjust without headaches or pain. Cheers to being in the 5'11 club!! We're gonna rock these healthy bodies in due time. -

It is water weight, take 8oz of luke warm water, cut a fresh lemon into 8 wedges and squeeze one into the water. It works as a natural diuretic and will help push the water you retained. I retain water like the plague. I have easily gained 10 lbs from morning to night in just water and can wake up 10 lbs lighter the next day. The lemon water works like a pro-move for me and everyone I have ever told about it. Good luck, my pre-op diet starts in a few days and I know I will need all the luck I can get! -
I wanted to have WLS for weight loss. But I was told that because of my severe GERD that the sleeve was a bad choice. After doing a lot of reading on the net and forums I would have to agree. Most of what I have read reflects that most people who have the sleeve end up with GERD even without having it before surgery. So, with the reading and my surgeons advise, I will be having gastric bypass on 3/21.

The weight loss slows down as you reach your goal. Are you still watching what you eat and sticking to mainly protein? Are you still tracking what you eat? Watching portion sizes?
-
The closer you are to goal the slower the rate of loss. It can be really frustrating when that goal weight is so close & it feels like you will never get there. Your weight loss slows as you’re consuming more so your intake is almost at what your body needs to function & so you lose little or nothing (maintenance). You have a couple of options. You can continue as you are, be patient & see how your loss progresses. You likely will eventually lose that 15lbs or close to it. Or you can do more activity or reduce your food intake but both of these options will have to be continued if you want to maintain the lower weight if they are the only ways to lose the weight. Always worth a chat with your dietician. It can be easy to overlook something or they may suggest something to shake up your eating plan. Not everyone gets to their goal but that’s ok. Sometimes your body settles at a slightly higher weight than you expected. Or you make eating & activity choices based upon how you want to live & enjoy your life (which are a major considerations for long term success). A way of eating or exercise regime that is too restrictive isn’t sustainable in the long term. All the best.

Tomorrow is my three-year anniversary. I stayed at my goal weight pretty easily for the first 18 months but gained about 20 pounds over the past year. I'm eating the same things as I did during the first year, but more of them. My diet is still high protein, low carb, low fat, and no sugar (or alcohol). I'm satisfied with my current weight, but now I really need to be careful to make sure I don't creep up. It's definitely harder than it was during the first 18 months or so, but I'll never go back to my old way of eating (nor anywhere near my previous weight).

February 2019 weight loss buds
Recidivist replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello everyone! We are now at three years since surgery, and I wanted to see how you all are doing? I'm doing okay, but not great. I've gained about 20 pounds in the past year, and I'm not very happy about it. I could make excuses (lockdown, stress, etc.), but the reality is that I have nobody to blame but myself. It's so much easier to eat at this point, and I acknowledged that I have overindulged. I'm still at a reasonable weight, but I know that I have to be very careful so I don't creep up slowly from here. I would ideally like to lose 10-15 pounds, but I'm not going to beat myself up if I don't. I'm still much healthier and more active than I was before surgery. I hope everyone else is doing well! -
Yes. ... ok, serious reply: - Which surgery did you have? - What did you weigh before, what's your weight now, how much have you lost in total? - What do you eat in a typical day?

I’m on the 8th. I’m getting nervous about the pain and recovery as well. Telling your friends and family is totally your choice. You can just say that you are losing weight for your health using high protein, low carb. Good luck to you. -
I have my pre-op procedures of upper GI and chest X-ray on Tuesday morning and my pre-op primary care physician appointment for clearance on Tuesday afternoon. I’m getting closer! After I had finished my nutritional class requirements at the first of January I thought surgery was imminent as we were told in the doctor talk that we were about a month away. But as I’ve read on here, enjoy the journey. Don’t rush. Be patient. Be gentle. I haven’t been very patient which is very evident by how little I chewed my food! I’ve been working on that. I’m turning 60 this week! I am excited that this milestone and my wls are close together. I feel ready for some good changes. My bmi is 44. I think at my highest weight it was 46. I feel so roly-poly. I want to kick my type 2 diabetes to the curb. I want to be able to be more active without the constant pain in my arthritic knees and ankles. I want to keep up with my two little granddaughters. I want to fit into seats! I am very glad to find this app/support group. My doc said that they had one on Facebook but I’ve given up that so I was glad to find this better alternative.

Is anyone's spouse against WLS?
Esi replied to MrsGreen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband was initially against it. He was afraid it wouldn’t work, or that I would regain the weight. However, he was supportive of my decision. Since I’ve lost the majority of excess weight, I think he is happily surprised. Time will tell if I can keep the weight off permanently. -

Im scheduled for March 12th! Starting my LRD tomorrow (god give me strength!) Im really excited to see the weight shift! Im excited to think I will be able to get into my old clothes again - the ones ive been saving because "one day ill get back into that" But im nervous. Nervous about the recovery. Nervous about the pain. Nervous about having time off work. Worried about my family seeing the weight coming off but not really knowing why. I know at some point im going to have to have the conversation about my reasons for having WLS - but for now, only myself and my partner know. Im happy about that. -
Thank you for reminding me I was making chili for a good stretch there and fell off the wagon so I am making more chili today as meal prep for the week. I also bought some tuna and protein bars I like. it’s constant work! congrats on your weight loss so far we are surgery day buddies!

I'm not really having food funerals. Partly, I think, because I had a really bad infection in October from a cat bite that basically had me super sick from the industrial strength antibiotics they had me on. Completely lost my appetite, and although I can and am eating now, I'm just not feeling the need to binge. Though, I did get some dairy queen last night lol and I had a couple of drinks. Might have some carb heavy meals before starting my pre-op diet, but other than that, I'm more focused on my goals. After 21 years, 10 years of which I've been trying to get Dr's to understand the severity of the stomach issues I have, I know what this lifestyle looks like. I didn't gain back any of the weight from my original surgery, but I never got to goal weight either. I have about another 75-95 lbs to lose. I know this time around it's not going to come off as easily or quickly, but I'm ready to put in the work. Only thing that's a bummer is, the surgery is about 2 weeks before my 50th, so no birthday cake for me (unless it's a cake flavored protein drink lol). -
I'm 7 years out and have done pretty good with keeping the weight off. I haven't stayed at my lowest but my surgeon said it's totally normal to gain some weight back. I'm going in on Tuesday for a revision to bypass due to severe GERD. I'd love to drop and keep off another 25 pounds. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

You are not an idiot! Weight gain and loss is a part of life, surgeries or not. I think it's a great step you can even recognize your patterns and ask for help. It's tough but I know there's hope. The biggest thing I see is to always make sure you have mental health support and put just as much work into that as you do the surgery or weight loss journey. I wish you luck and hope insurance helps you out with it! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Scheduled for Jan 12th and getting cold feet. Is VSG "worth it"?
Ltdanfan replied to JennyO526's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 2 weeks out and worried that im going to regret it. I think about food more than i ever have and im still in a lot of pain around one of the incision sites. It burns every time i change position or cough and i cannot use my core muscles without pain. I'm also freezing all the time. Im down 14 lbs so far, although it doesnt feel like ive lost anyhing and its starting to slow down. But i know there will be starts and fits with regard to the pounds coming off. I dont regret it yet but ive gotten close. Maybe once ive lost more weight (and actually feel like it) and i fit into jeans that i havent been able to wear in years ill feel more positive about things. But i dont regret it yet. point is that you wont really know until you do it. I keep thinking of the positives and the reasons im doing this- to be healthier able to more fully participate in my life. maybe ill regret it if i dont achieve my goals or maybe ill realize that im still healthier even if i still weigh more than i want and cant eat all the things i could before. I wont know or be able to say, if i regret it until im farther away from surgery and back to somewhat of a normal life. in looking at why others regret surgery or not, you have to consider why they regret it. Is the regret due to a temporary complication or long term failure to achieve goals, or something else. i had the support of my family but not of my best friend, however i had to make the decision for myself, just like you. Regardless of what you decide, you have my support. And all the people here. -
This is exactly what I have done in the past, lose weight then gain it back plus more, although I've never gone past my highest weight. One of the reasons I'm keen to get started with a surgery journey is because I've gained back so much in such a short space of time that I'm worried that I'll keep getting bigger at this rate and before I know it I'll be further from healthy than I've ever been. I have now booked in to talk to a doctor next week, which is something I've been delaying in the hopes I can lose the weight without help, plus I hadn't realised that I had slipped beyond a BMI of 30 (although now I know for sure, it is incredibly obvious that I am at an unhealthy size/shape, I even used to have loose skin that is now full again, I do not understand how I've been in this denial so badly, I feel like an absolute idiot!). I just want to be a healthy weight without using disordered techniques!! Suzannethemom - I was concerned that that would be the case. I do suffer from idiopathic intracranial hypertension when I am at an unhealthy weight level, plus my home blood pressure readings have been high recently, I've just not seen the doctor about it as of yet. With the remeasuring of my height (I haven't been measured in about 20 years!) it does put my at a BMI of 36 so I'm hoping that they'll agree I am a suitable candidate. Thank you all! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Emotions on high post op?
catwoman7 replied to phoenixillume's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
yes - there are a lot of hormonal things that go on the first few weeks after surgery. A lot of women complain about screwed up menstrual cycles as well as moodiness. It has to do with estrogen being stored in fat cells - it's released during rapid weight loss. It'll all level out eventually and things will go back to normal. Just hang in there... -
seven years out. I lost 235 lbs and put about 20 lbs back on during year 3 (which is pretty common - most of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting our lowest weight). there are no food restrictions once you get a few months out. Some people can't tolerate certain foods (I can't handle really fat-laden meals, for example), but nothing is off the table once you're out a ways. I can eat pork and other red meat with no problem. Edited to add that I almost never went off plan until I was a year out. I'm not really on any plan anymore other than I still eat the minimum grams of protein that I'm required to eat. I'm also cognizant of my calorie intake, but I'm not longer obsessive about it. If I eat too much one day, I just cut back a bit the next day. As long as it all evens out in the end and my weight is pretty stable, I don't worry about it.

I chose to get surgery because I've been a chronic dieter, laser and gainer. My dream is to just maintain a healthy weight. I once lost 70 lbs which was most of my excess weight and then gained it back plus some. I tried to lose the weight for 2 years straight but would ultimately lose then gain again. I got so tired of it. I took charge of my mental health first and then started exploring weight loss surgery. I think it's a good option if you can swing it. My insurance didn't cover it even though my BMI was 45 at the time. But I have terrible insurance lol Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Long term success
The Greater Fool replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I mostly eat to plan. My plan is my normal, daily eating style. I never counted calories or grams of protein or ounces of water. I eat a lot of pork and a lot of red meat, though they are very much on my plan and always have been from day 1 post-op. Nothing is out of your diet forever except those things you can't handle in moderation. There are also plenty of things that should not make a frequent appearance in your eating... well, at least my eating. The weird thing of it all is I don't know why I have stuck to this plan for 18 years, but I could never stick to a plan pre-op. I have theories that involve sticking to plan and positive feedback, but it's not well formed. But, my surgeon never had a concept of "after I lost my excess weight." The plan was forever. Good luck, Tek -
I find losing weight quite easy. I also unfortunately find gaining weight just as easy. I had the surgery to find a new life of intuitive healthy eating without measuring which is bad for my mental health. I was exactly BMI 35 when I had the surgery. I believe US insurances will pay if you have >35 with comorbidities.

Those who have had the surgery in the past. Who all have kept the weight off? Have you stuck with the food plan perfectly? I eat a lot of pork now and some red meat. Are those foods off my diet forever?
