  1. My husdand is One week post VSG. Began eating pureed foods for 2 days. Seems like each time he eats he gets really tired and needs to lay down and rest... anyone else experience this? Thoughts?

    Slippage or overfilling?

SOunds like an overfill. If you are not better by Friday I would call my surgeon. Don't want to get worse during the week-end! Good luck.
  3. On the Protein Shakes, add things to make them treats. I enjoyed chocolate powder with a tbl of Peanut Butter whizzed up in it. Or chocolate powder, SF Kahlua syrup and ice - nicely close to a mudslide. Or vanilla powder made with half OJ, half milk, and a packet of sweetner of choice. Or matcha powder and SF frozen yogurt. Or vanilla poweder with fresh berries (all whizzed up, of course). Much more satisfying than the standard Protein Drink, and something I often looked forward to. Take your eggs and make egg salad. Mmm. Ask if you can have refried Beans. Usually around the time you can have eggs, you can also have beans. A nice bowl of beans with sour cream, cheese, salsa verde -- yum. I eat tofu a few times a week. One of my fav ways to have it is Thai style. Marinate it at least 24 hours in a combo of OJ, brown sugar, sesame oil, spicy peanut sauce, honey, chili paste and ginger. Then just cook on a hot non-stick gridle or pan. Carmelize the remaining marinade & serve over the tofu. A tip for tofu - this throws everyone (who is new to tofu) off. Do not buy "silken" tofu, even if it says "silken firm". It's soft, designed to be more of a dairy substitute than an eat-alone item. If you want to cook it like a piece of meat, buy extra firm and press it on paper towels (using weights if you have time) to get as much of the water out, but make sure you're working with a kind that doesn't say "silken". If you hcan have tuna, then tuna, mayo, white/northern beans, white vinegar, red onion and a pinch of rosemary is the perfect lunch. Or make regular tuna (the cheapo can kind has more protein than the premium white albacore in a pouch, usually) salad, put it on a nonstick pan and "fry" it up, then top with cheddar & let melt. Like a breadless tuna melt. If you're on the go, the smaller size of tuna pouches, a few packs of condiment mayo, and a plastic fork is all you need. One of my fav travel/on the go meals -- buy turkey pepperoni. Microwave it on paper towels until it stops sizzling, but isn't burning... about 3 min in my microwave. As soon as it comes out, blot it dry with more paper towels and let them cool. The fat will cook out (they're low fat to begin with, high protein) and you'll be left with a very crunchy pepperoni "chip". Very tasty with some garden veggie cream cheese, or cottage cheese. Hope this helps.

    Why Sugar Free?

I dont eat artificial sweeteners. I've learned to tame my sweet tooth to some degree - and I gave up sugar in coffee and tea at 17, and it was pretty easy, it took 2 weeks. Other than that, I keep sugary items to a minimum, but if I'm going to have a treat, I eat the real thing. As far as yogurt and stuff like that - well I dont eat Jello, pudding or Desserts ever anyway, and things like yogurt, I'd eat greek yogurt with some fruit, not sweetened yogurt. I never drink soda ever anyhow, so I dont have a problem with that. You can train your tastebuds away from overtly sweet foods pretty easily - the sugar in things like baked Beans or canned tomatoes or whatever is a bit harder to avoid and you have to read labels. I dont believe sugar is the evil people think it is, its only problematic in the humungous quantities that people consume in all their processed foods and drinks.
  5. Hey, I had my surgery on December 7th and have lost 43 pounds. I lost 21 pounds that first month, but I did have a stall by the third week. I was annoyed. I am still losing and sometimes I go a week without losing weight. I know it is frustrating, but you are going to lose the weight. You seem to have done well so far. You just need to keep doing what you are doing. Maybe lay off the crackers. My surgeon has me on 400-600 calories until I lose 75% of my weight. I guess some doctors are different with what they want others to do.
  6. @@AvaFern, I'm glad you contacted your doctor as soon as you suspected something was wrong. And I agree that antibiotics are indeed a boon to humankind. But don't you think it's likely that the two parts of your post are related? The weight gain could be Fluid retention caused by the inflammation. If the weight gain persists for another week, then it will be time to react by cutting back on calories. Make sure you are drinking plenty of plain Water. Try not to panic. I know that's easy to say and hard to do, but it's counterproductive. Edited to add: If you are not currently tracking your food intake, you might want to start now. That information is very helpful for weight loss and for maintenance.

    Gas ex?

I used Gas X chewables right after surgery with no problems at all. I actually tried the strips and they did not work nearly as well as the chewables did. I also had to sleep in my lazy boy for about the first 2 weeks.
  8. I just downloaded this app and thought it was a cool idea to talk to other people that are going through, or have gone through what I was and am going through now. I was sleeved on April 16th and at my two week post op appt I had already lost 48 pounds. 48 freaking pounds!!!! I have a long way to go but it looks like this was the right decision. I'm only four weeks out on Tuesday and I'm still on puréed food. Lots of tuna fish haha. SERIOUSLY craving crunch. Good journey people!

One Month Post-Op-- The Fill Appointment

Under normal circumstances, I am not terribly hungry at any time except first thing in the morning. I get a bit peckish about mid-afternoon, but a light low carb snack takes care of the problem. I can tell it's time to eat when the area above and near my band growls. (I ignore the lower belly growls now.) I've been on solid foods and eating normally since about 15 days after surgery, as per my doctor's instructions. This has not been without a few unfortunate events where I discovered I wasn't quite ready for that food yet. Even now, I still have some difficulty with beef and pork. Poultry and seafood pass with relative ease unless I eat too quickly. Let's see...my typical meals. Hmm. Okay. Breakfast-- one egg, usually mixed with a couple of tablespoons of both a well-cooked vegetable and perhaps a tiny bit of meat. This is often baked. I like baked eggs. Call me lazy. Add this to two cups of coffee before I switch to Crystal Light for the rest of the day. Lunch- often this is a meal heavy on the Protein, like tuna salad, a leftover meat from the night before, or something. Today, I was different. I had 2 oz of brussells sprouts and called it done. Snack-- today I had 1/2 cup of LF cottage cheese with a bit of Splenda and DaVinci SF raspberry syrup. Dinner-- Here is where I cook. I love to cook! I use SavingDinner.com to choose recipes and each week's low carb meals come with a grocery list. Last night was Saigon Shrimp over Cauli-Rice. My DH and roommate also had a rice pilaf and green Beans. Normally, I'd have indulged in the green beans, but I was too stuffed after the Saigon Shrimp, and I didn't even have it over the Cauli-Rice. Tonight is Tuscan Bean Soup! I'll make biscuits for the guys, but I'll probably have just the Soup and maybe a little spinach salad. BTW, I often work into the night, so I'll have a hot herb tea. Somehow, that satisfies my late night cravings. Sorry this took so long to answer. I'm working a promotion today and keep having to stop typing. LOL!
  10. I am new to the forum, but I have seen many of your posts. I look forward to seeing more hopfully in the future. My surgery is next week on the 16th. Congrats on the cross-over! praying for your speey recovery and an eased journey! Happy for you and all the April surgeries!
  11. O.T.R Sleever: I think thats just what I needed was a reality check! Its a bit ridiculous that I feel that way. Stalls just make you feel crappy no matter how much weight you've lost. I love my sleeve and am so very fortunate I have this great tool. I didnt get fat overnight and shouldnt expect it all to come off overnight either. Thanks for the much needed reality check!
  12. I think the main part of the pre-op is just trying to make you aware of what you will need to do after surgery. My surgeon didn't require a set amount of weight to be taken off. but I tried as I could. I slowly weeded out carbs, junk food, carbonation, etc. And now I'm six weeks out and its been a breeze. Its a total different experience than pre-op. You can't eat as much, you don't want to eat either. I'm speaking personally mind you. I only lost 20 lbs pre-op, but after surgery, I'm getting close to 60 lbs.

    Election Day 2012 Sleevers....

    32lbs since surgery .... 47lbs including 2 weeks pre-op
  14. I feel lucky....no scratch that blessed. Not to long ago I felt hopeless and miserable. Here I am today, lost almost 60 pounds. This has changed the ways look at food. I still have lots of mental changes to make and still need to make sure this new found thought process sticks. In the past I have lost weight and I have regained it back with a nice bonus extra weight. What's so different now? The week before surgery when I could only drink Protein shakes had me come to a realization, this is not going to be easy. I already knew it was going to be hard but actually experiencing the hard made me realize what it truly meant. When I came home after surgery my brain wanted food. It wanted to feel good. I even had dreams about food. I cried a lot. I felt like I lost a friend. When I began eating solids is when I realized how much this surgery can really help me with this mental change. I embraced it. Began logging my calories. The scale moving down was exciting! Here I am 3 months later almost 60 pounds lighter...37 pounds away from my goal of 135. Everyday I have been working on my mental stomach. I have been feeding my mental stomach nourishment. A positive mental outlook on life, a eat to live not live to eat kind of attitude. I read health food magazines, I look at pictures of women with toned bodies rather then admiring skinny women. Every day I look in the mirror and admire what I have accomplished so far. If I don't do this I will fail. I will fail at this losing weight again and this surgery will be for nothing. I will regain the weight back. I lost so far. I didn't get fat because I was physically hungry after all. It wasn't true hunger. It was hunger from my mental stomach begging to be fed. Now I feed it something different. Yes I was a food addict and now I am in recovery and I will always run the risk of relapsing. I have to avoid trigger foods, trigger people, and situations. I avoid revolving fun around food. If we go out to eat I make sure they have healthy choices. Yup this will be a life long battle but I believe it can be won! Thanks for listening (or reading) I just wanted share

    Five days closer to bandland!

Hi Critical, I was banded 4 days ago and am feeling pretty good. I will be going to work tomorrow. I had a hard time with the pre op liq. diet I have to admit I ate some string cheese and an occasional salad.with grilled chicken, just kept it small portions. And things were still fine. I am also 5'4 and 210. alot like you are. I go to a support group where I can get all kinds of realistic answers. Not always the ones the Dr.'s want to tell you. I am suppose to be on clear liq. for 4 more weeks. Well it has only been 4 days and I was starving. So after talking to the support group I found out they all ate something. I had chili in my "magic blender" and it was so satisfing. Another thing I bought today is one of those belly bands that help hold you up while carring a baby, I think you are male, but so what it helps where the port is. good luck.

I Am SO Mad at Myself

I have had months go by with no weight loss. It's extremely frustrating. However, now that nearly a year has passed, I am down 55 lbs. I tried dieting for 3 years, going to the gym and exercising every day, before I was banded. I would lose a couple lbs during the week, and gain it back every weekend. You have your tool, and it will work for you if you have the right fill. But unfortunately, the band does not help with eating chocolate. I am not saying that you eat chocolate. I am saying I do. But when I don't, I lost slowly. I didn't though, until I got the right fill.

    MIA for the holiday

I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a happy, safe and blessed Thanksgiving holiday. We are heading to West Virginia to visit John's family for a week. Because of how isolated in the mountains of WV we'll be, I won't have internet or phone service. I should be able to get phone service sporadically when we head into "town". I'm very thankful to have the opportunity call all of you friends, and very grateful to have you all in my life.

What is it like for you eating in the green zone?

We are asking the same question! I have 6.5 in my 10 band and feel different! Last fill there was little difference but this was different! Satisfied quicker and not hungry after three hours! I only got .1 cc's today so I didn't think it would do anything! Hopefully I am green!

Carefirst - Blue Choice Maryland - Fills

Hi Mary, Are the people at CareFirst Blue Choice out to lunch? I called yesterday with general questions & was put on hold several times & was finally cut off (right!!). I even asked the person to jot down all of my questions so she could find out all the answers at one time! I can't remember if I asked this before (forgive me if I did) how long did it take once the info was sent into BlueChoice? I was so hoping to have my surgery next month since I have a large project due Nov 15th. How long were you out of work? Dr Singh (St Agnes)said anytime between two-four weeks.

    Getting Excited!

I went to my last appt with the surgeon today...I have lost enough weight to do the one week of pre op dieting. But I am going to start a couple of days early just to be sure my liver is good. After talking to the surgeon, everything became real...I am getting sooo excited now!!!

    Wow Restriction! After 1st Fill

Great blog! I am approaching my first fill in (2) weeks. I do believe I have been giving a false sense of what it will be like after the first fill. I do feel more informed after reading your blog! Thanks for sharing!
  22. Hi Dana, I hope you don't mind, I edited out the extraneous code in your post that was making it impossible to read. Congratulations on your banding and on losing 22 lbs! That's a lot to lose in the first two weeks, but on a liquid diet it's certainly possible. Just be prepared that when you go back on solid food this weight loss will STOP, and you might even put back on a few pounds. IT'S NORMAL, and your loss will start up again--albeit at a MUCH slower pace--as your body adjusts. I don't know about the difficulty swallowing. The feeling may pass, but as with anything unusual if it doesn't go away, talk to your doctor. Welcome to LBT!!
  23. Hello to everyone! I have been on this site for a few weeks now just reading all the threads and finally decided to join you all. It has taken me all these weeks to digest all of this new information but I am more determined now than ever to proceed down this road. I know I will not be alone because now I have all of you! I feel so well informed that I'm not sure I'll have any questions for the surgeon when I meet him later this month! Looking forward to being a part of all the success on here.
