  1. There's lots of stuff here about food getting stuck and causing pain in the chest, and about first bite syndrome, but does anyone else feel it in their throat? When I ate, I would start to get discomfort in my throat, and it got a little worse with each bite, or sometimes it took several bites before it started. Sometimes it would get really bad, and sometimes it didn't resolve until the food came up. It has lots of similarities to getting stuck that way. It happened mostly after the surgery (mild then), just after my first fill and since my second fill. My nurse and surgeons at the clinic I go to seem to find that I felt it in my throat to be a little odd. Anyway this week the surgeon thought best thing to try was taking a little of the fill out. It's been 2 days and I haven't had anything close to that issue. So, I was too restricted. Only trouble is now I can eat more than the recommended amount again (still less than before though so I could still lose weight). I'm thinking I'll just wait and see how the weight loss does go - I dread the thought of even a small fill right now. Just to be clear, I am still so happy I did this, and with the weight I have lost.

    Weight Loss questions

Hello Rohit, At my heaviest I was 388 lbs. I finally realized that dieting and pills was not going to work for me. I grew despondent and then a friend made a comment that I should get weight loss surgery. I was offended. I kept dwelling on it it, obsessing over her words. I was formerly dead-set against it and thought it was only for losers and was the "easy way out". I finally considered that maybe I was wrong and began researching it. After about a year of research and saving money I decided to get the gastric sleeve in Tijuana. I was 350 lbs on the day of surgery. Four to five months later I had already lost over 100 lbs. Today, I'm just 8 lbs away from my goal weight. I'm both extremely excited and anxious because there is both positive and negative things that you have to work through but I can tell you that I should have had the surgery sooner. I do not regret it and highly recommend it.

    wht should i do?????????

What should you do?....I think that some answers may just irritate the crap out of you, and my answer probably will....you know exactly what to do....and just like the Nike commercial...just do it. For some strange reason, people (lap banders included) think that this journey is EASY....it is not...it takes work. Do not give up and you should surround your self with positive people and situations...it sounds like you are in the "vortex of doom and despair"...know the feeling-been there, done that and got the t-shirt. You are worth the work that you need to embark on. This is a learning stage...you are still learning about how to live with the lap band and what actual hunger feels like. It took me 6 months to figure out that I didn't know how to recognize hunger. I am a little stuck on path. I want to be 100 pounds down by my banding anniversary, but I have been at this weight since Jan. 17th. But, I know what to do...and guess what?...I am not doing it. I am choosing to make poor decisions. But, I am not kicking myself to hard in the butt...we are not perfect and I will get back on track. Don't worry you will do fine.
  4. I was banded 5/6/2010 and had lost only 35 lbs by Febrauray of this year. Well, I got on tract on Feb. 1st eating less than 25 Carbs and at least 60 grams of Protein a day. By February 10th I had lost an additiona 8 lbs. I decided I could cheat on the 10th because it was my 5 yr wedding anniversary. I didn't do too bad - had a little popcorn at the movies and maybe 10 chips and queso - ate 1/3 of my grilled chicken and shrimp and a small portion of dessert. The question I have is if you eat 25 grams or less of carbs a day and then eat a bunch in one day - have you seen your weight increase on the scale a few days later? I was at 237.5 lbs on the 1st and then at 229.5 on the 10th. Since cheating on the 10th, I have gone back to 25 grams of carbs or less a day; but, I weighed this morning (4 days later) and scale showed 231. Anyone had this experience? I thought if I did really well all week I could "cheat" once a week; but, not if the scale is going to do this each time.

    Recommendations for a new scale

The Tanita brand scales measure your weight, body fat, body water, lean muscle, visceral fat, etc. They are not cheap, but not crazy expensive either. This is the same brand used in my surgeon's office, but their particular model is fancier. You can set up multiple users for some of the models. I got mine from Amazon and we both really like it.

hey girl, thanks for the kind words.. i totally understand the getting down over the food thing... but i just don't know if i could bear to put the weight back on.. could it be worth having some taken out of the band and trying some thing else to help (i'm swearing off any more fills - i'm at about 7 mls so i can't go much more or i'll be like dead) so i bought a bike, and now i'm going to give riding it a go!! i hope you find a solution, and that you feel better about the band soon... it has saved my life and i am really grateful... much love and support from me to you xxoo jess:wub:

WOW - 5 months out already???

I can't believe it's been 5 months already! I feel like I should be much farther along, but then, I think, hang on, you're not 25 anymore and as long as the scale keeps going down, you should be satisfied. At least this is the longest I've lost this much weight and kept it off this long. I've lost 41 pounds and would LOVE to hit my 1/2 point by May 1!! Here's to us October bandsters!!

How long should I wait till I drink

I never really followed this rule because I really didn't think there was too much of a point to the 30-meal-30 rule. I am going to drink when I'm thirsty, right? I have had my band for about a year now and I am pretty tight, and have been with a fill I have had for about 4 months now. Honestly my advice is that you can never get too many liquids so drink as much as you can. I have days when it is impossible for me to hardly swallow my own spit, so I drink whenever I can, whether its 30 minutes before or after I attempt to eat. While I am eating and I feel like something is stuck, I can't drink of course until it goes down so sometimes that can take more or less than 30 minutes. I also will gauge whether or not something is stuck by taking a sip of Water (or whatever I am drinking) and feeling it go down. I don't think this is a major rule to worry about too much...The only way drinking has ever effected my weight loss is because I don't drink enough most of the time.
  13. amberj- i have bcbs in wash state. i went to my 1st seminar sept 7th, and started the paperwork. they approved me 100% in nov, and i just got banded dec 13th. they required a psych visit. a nutritionish visit, a note from my dr stating why she thought i would be a good canidate. she knew of my struggles with my weight and my family history. i also had to have weight watchers fax my year long history with them. bcbs approved me within 3 weeks- god bless them ! im down 14 lbs and it has all been VERY easy. good luck to you !!
  14. I'm almost 3 months out and I still feel pulling on the sutures inside. Doc told me it is completely normal. And as far as the stall, you're still healing. I didn't really start to drop until over 2 weeks out (swelling and such can prevent it). I started my 2 week liquid diet on July 18 with surgery on Aug 4 and as of today, I am 2.5 lbs away from being down 60 lbs! Don't worry, you'll get there! I did the same worry thing but quickly learned from doc and people on here that you must be patient and let yourself heal. Also, increasing Protein to at least 60g per day increases weight loss! Get good protein packed shakes. ~~ LadyDarkness415 ~~

    I'm in deep doodoo

Try getting run over by a tractor. That's what happened to me about 3 years postop. Broken pelvis and femur, too much bruising to even list. Too much pain to even think about. Not to mention the depression from feeling useless and dependant in others. I was in the hospital for weeks and then a wheelchair and Walker at home for a couple months. I gained 15 pounds eating hospital food but didn't realize it because of all the swelling. As soon as I figured out what was happening, I refused all the carbs the hospital was serving and had my hubby smuggle in custom meals of straight Protein and veggies. I even spent a couple weeks on Protein shakes and finally got rid of the regain. What I ate was one of the few things I felt I had control over during that time. I see you are preop, so I'm not sure what motivates you, but for me, at 3 years postop and enjoying being a normal size person was what did it for me. There was NO WAY I was going to buy the next size up jeans, so I just did whatever it took to get back down to my normal size. I guess you need to get it straight in your head why you are doing what you are doing and make it happen. don't let a silly little motorcycle accident get in your way

    Band or Sleeve?

OMG the band is the WORSEEE! Quick summary, got the band in 2009, lost 60 pounds in ONE YEAR! smh and it was a STRUGGLE!....Gained it all back..got the band revised to the sleeve in June 2012, I am 7 months post op and Im down 80 pounds! No problem and it was a smooth ride..no vomiting and I can eat anything...witht the band, it was impossible for me to eat protein so I ate junk!...My experience, sleeve is the best decision..Do some research of the difference from the band to sleeve and you will see for yourself...goodluck

    Psych evaluation

I had mine yesterday. If you didn't already complete a patient history and questionnaire then that's the first step. You will need to answer some questions regarding your eating habits (mostly related to emotional eating), alcohol and substance use, and a depression/anxiety screening. The Psychiatrist will review all of your paperwork and then ask questions regarding eating habits, emotional state, any history of abuse or trauma, diet attempts in the past, history of weight problems, support you have, what knowledge you have of the surgery (before, during and after), etc. I googled Psych Eval for Bariatric Surgery and found some helpful info. Just be honest - they're there to help and make sure you are ready for such a drastic change in your life. Good luck! After mine, there were no concerns but I asked about help with emotional eating and she recommended I see the Psychologist in the WLS Practice for behavior modification counseling. I want to have as many tools to help me after surgery. Good luck!

    Pre-op sleeve newbie

Yes I lost 145 on my own before I even saw the surgeon. I did it with1 year on Weight Watchers and 1 year on Nutrisystem. When I saw the surgeon he wanted me on a 6 month High Protein, low carb diet and I lost another 38 pounds and was finally able to have my sleeve at 314. However I was not diabetic
  20. Hi, I have had friends that used stomach compression wraps after pregnancy to help with the unwanted stomach flab. Has anyone used this to help out with the saggy skin after weight loss? I'm not interested in using it as a weight loss tool but as a measure to reduce the chance of the skin sagging so badly while I'm eating right and exercising. Let me know. Thanks.
  21. Congrats on you weight loss. When one's sagging skin pulls on one's spine or neck to the extent to cause severe pain and necessary spinal/cervical reconstruction , THEN the damage that excess skin can do will be realized. Does it happen to everyone? of course not Does it happen to enough to be a consideration to pre-op WLS folks? Absolutely! Is skin removal surgery major and painful? WLS itself is a walk in the park compared to skin removal surgery. (MHO). So, please don't take skin surgery lightly, but when needed, there is no choice. It is not always for cosmetic reasons.

    Pre-op sleeve newbie

If you are diabetic - they may suggest getting Gastric bypass instead of the sleeve. I don't know how they expect you to lose 100lbs on your own but there's a forum by weight loss (ie. 200+ lbs) that maybe has some info to help. Good luck!

Anyone else with low body temp

No official readings but I have had my body temperature change a lot. I think low readings can be a sign of thyroid issues. I am freezing now and I used to be hot all the time. I know losing the weight does help, but i am thinking the surgery changes your hormones. Hope all goes well for you.
  24. Hello everyone  I've had my band for approximately 2 years. The weight lost has been slow. When I started I weighed about 250 and went down to 172 and still losing. I did not have an adjustment for awhile. When I finally went in for an adjustment I was shocked to find out that I had a dilation of the band. Instead of my band being filled my band was deflated and I was told to come back in 6 weeks to see if it repaired itself. In between that visit I gained 13 pounds. My doctor informed me that my band would have to be repaired or possible change to gastric by pass. I see my doctor on 9/25/09 for consultation and he will discuss my options. I'm so distruaght. Part of me have been considering the gastric sleeve or bypass to lose the quickly and move on with my life. I feel this is such a set back. Yes....it's obvious that I'm very upset over this but I'm determine at what ever choice is made. With a deflated band I have this horrendous appetite. I've been trying to control it but it's difficult. I think this whole ordeal and setback is messing with my head. I would not suggest getting rid of the band if you have not managed your eating disorder. I'm not ashamed to admit that I need the support of the band. Terry
