Well, I'm officially having no restriction at all, anything that I had is now gone and I can eat anything and everything. I'm going for my first fill on Wed with my fam doc (God help us both, she's never even heard of the band) and I'm PRAYING I'll have some restriction. Am I supposed to be fasting for fills? What am I supposed to eat after the fill on the same day? How much did everyone receive on their first fills and was it enough? I have a Mid-band. I ate about half a bean and salsa salad at Taco Time at lunch and I ate about 1/3 of the shell (I should have just ordered it without the damn shell)...I shouldn't have done that, I feel guilty now. By the way, they changed the salads at Taco Time, they're no longer small, they're pretty big, so I ate a lot. Thanks everyone

I have gone out twice in the last year and drank. We were told it was a bad idea because the drinks are super high in calories and sugar. When I drank I got drunk fast and sobered up fast but the calories weren't worth it to me.

That is life... I don't do the chewing forever, but if you are not having the surgery, it is recommended for you to do the practice. This helps you slow down and may make it possible for you to actually sense your full mark rather than eat fast and over fill witch is so easy to do. The losing to much is possible. I know, I did it. I looked gaunt and it took a while to regain. Then it was hard to stop the regain. Uhg. Try but drinking 1/2 hour before your meal, during, and 1/2 hour after. 15 minutes for snacks. Chew chew chew... Not to the point of gagging but enough to slow you down. If your not full in 1/2 hour (me it's 15 min) stop anyway. Focus on protein first, limit anything white (bad carbs) and see how you do. You should see a progress within a few weeks if you hold your self accountable. Take vitamins as well.... Good luck my friend

Hello! I got banded 7 days ago and I am down from 292 to 272 - 20 pounds in 7 days. I am following a simple food plan right now... typically protien shake blended with Fiber Bran Cereal in the morning, bean Soup for lunch and egg salad with light mayo for dinner...and Water or decaf tea all day. So I am not starving myself, but definitely a drastic reduction from the pre-surgery days. Is a kind of drop (20 lbs in one week after surgery) unheard of?

Are you doing PT for your ankles? I broke my leg back in June - it totally set my surgery date back quite a bit (7 mo!) and now that I'm exercising a lot with a group, the trainers think we're gonna train for a walk/run 5k! I feel so discouraged because I can't even limp a half mile anymore (5k =~3 mi) .... And my leg hurts and complains. I can't even "push through" because I can't take NSAIDs... I understand where you are!! But there are lots of things you can do that are just upper-body, even good cardio! Try punching a pillow for 30 seconds as fast as you can - just pop-pop-pop over and over, doesn't matter how hard just do it fast... As others said, lifting and stretching your arms will help!! You can also do core exercises (crunches etc)... Again, don't worry about "how many" just do it for 30 seconds at a time.

First "delay" - Surgeon All Booked Up!
LadyPol posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I met with my surgeon back in September, not long after I began my 14 week insurance required prep program. At that time, he told me that there should be no problem getting the surgery scheduled in December (which would be nice financially, as we have met our deductibles for the year). Fast forward to this week .. my 14th week of the program. Called the scheduling person to mention again that we were hoping for a December date and she informed us that Dr. is booked through to the end of January. I had been mentally preparing myself for an end of December date and now it looks like it will probably be in February or so....pending insurance approval. Not a big delay or issue ... just a small disappointment and rearranging of the thought process. Continuing to read here on OH and learn everything I can! Blessings! -
My suggested test for these issues is, try a progresso Soup? Maybe a chicken vegetable soup or beef stew type soup? If you can eat soup without getting stuck, you probably aren't chewing your food enough or you're eating too fast? Of course you want to chew the chunks of beef/chicken in the soup to mush but this is similar to the consistency of food we're supposed to eat. So, if you can down soup, your band is not too tight. If you can't eat soup without having a stuck episode, you're probably too tight and need a small unfill? Let us know how it works out? tmf

I've been reading here for years so let me take a shot at your questions? Every doctor has different protocols and some prime the band during surgery. Some don't prime at all. Every doctor has different protocols for fills. We have some here who only get .5 CCs per fill. Some fill with 5 CCs and ask the patient to swallow some Water to make sure it goes down OK. Allergan or Realize bands aren't that much different. Some of us got to the green zone with no fills and some with 13. I'd say the average is around 5. Usually it takes 2-3 before we feel the first satiety signals. Some doctors fill with fluoroscopy. It's an X-Ray so the doctor can see how fast Fluid flows through the band. This way they can fill the band only once or twice to get you to some kind of restriction? Most of us have no complications with fills? Sometimes the port can flip but it's rare. Occasionally some nurses or nurse practitioners may have a hard time finding the port. Hope this helps till someone more specific answers your questions?

I really appreciate your detailed response. My dr didn't prime it so it's completely empty. But even without any fill if I don't chew well or if I eat to fast then I get that full filling till my throat, it takes a few minutes and it goes away. Is that normal? I have a friend that has the allergen 14 cc and till he got filled 6 cc he had zero restriction, is it possible that the less the band can take the tighter it's on stomach even before a fill?

9 days on liquids is getting to me
grannyk replied to Raine's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hope everyone doesn't hate me, but I''m on day 9 of clears since my surgery and I can't believe it has gone by so fast. I will start full liquids tomorrow. I will be glad to have a little more substance, but I have felt fine. The only time I was nauseated was when I went shopping with my daughter. I think some people on the forum who feel bad do not get enough protein during the clear stage. I have been getting 60-80 grams of protein daily by mixing GNC Whey Protein chocolate flavor in water. I mix one & 1/2 scoops instead of one for a little richer taste, but it tastes pretty darn good when it your only source of protein. I feel for those who are having a difficult time getting through the first few weeks. It is just like when I dieted in the past and the people around me were eating all my favorites while I was depriving myself. Just think ahead to the time when we can have almost anything we want because we can only have a limited amount. We will survive!!!! -

Hello, I was banded May22nd starting at 215 today weigh 189. I get sick on almost everything i eat. I told my sergeon he thinks i eat to much to fast. Its a 10cc band filled 3cc. The past couple days I have been exsperienceing soreness ubove my belly button and up the middle. It feels almost like I did 500 sit ups or like as if i was vomiting all nite. Now I do vomit alot but its like haveing a full glass of Water and tiping it over I bend over the food comes right out, I am not using my abdominal muscles at least I don't think so. This is not projectile vomiting its like spitting up all you eat. If you have any suggestions or have heard about this type of feeling I would appreciate your feed back. Thank you so much.

I had a lap band in 2008 that has been a tremendous failure. I have been so sick with it that I had to have all the fluid removed from it. My doctor suggests a revision from the lap band to a RNY. I need to lose 10 lbs before I can meet with the surgeon. Any suggestions on how to lose 10 lbs fast?

Welcome, it's good you are trying to improve your health. I agree one week is probably the average time for recovery. some need a little less, some need a little more time. I like to think that the band sort of evens out the playing field for overweight people. Meaning, our thin friends, could overeat also, but they seem to be able to resist doing that most of the time and know when they are full. Overweight people ( me) seem to have a broken thermostat that doesn't tell me I've had enough food. the band can help boost our willpower. But yes, it is possible to eat around the band. there are foods that will go through the band easier than others and the foods that go through easily are generally high calorie foods. But if you follow the food plan of eating Protein first, that helps fill up your pouch and you are able to push away from the table. The band helps you change your habits, but it is not a cure, it is more like a crutch we can lean on to help us. We must do much of the work ourselves, forever. Since getting my band, this is the most weight I have lost in 3.5 months. I'm not a fast loser, but I am losing weight at a steady pace. I do not feel deprived.

Waiting for ins. approval with 105 pounds to lose
Southern Missy replied to stacey f.'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Stacy! Are you sure you didn't copy all that from my bio?? I haven't been banded yet but on reading a lot of posts from this site I have come across a lot of people who have been losing 100 pounds (or more) so I am greatly encouraged. No, it's not as fast as RNY but I personally would prefer to lose slowly and be healthy -- besides I didn't gain it overnight! Don't stress!! I am finally excited about my life again and can hardly wait to get the band. It's been so long since I was able to lose weight -- no matter what I did -- that I am just going to take baby steps. Right now, 20 pounds would be a step in the right direction! -
HI LachaeJ YOU SOUND LIKE ME. I HAD LAPBAND IN 8/2008. I LOST NO MORE THAN 42 LBS THE WHOLE TIME I HAD IT. WAS EITHER TOO TIGHT OR TOO LOSE. AT ONE POINT MY HUSBAND RAISE THE HEAD OF OUR BED TO THE POINT WE WOULD SLIDE TOWARD THE FOOT OF IT LOL! HAD A LOT OF COMPLICATIONS WITH THAT DARN BAND. REALLY BAD REFLUX AND ESOPHAGUS DAMAGE. I GOT MY RNY BYPASS 12/24/2014 YEAH!!! I'M WITH CHUBBSEY1. I FORGOT WHAT I LOST ON THE PRE OP FAST MAYBE 10-12LBS. I WAS ONLY ALLOWED 4 OR 5 shakes AND broth FOR 7 DAYS. WHEN YOU SEE YOUR DOCTOR, HE MAY NOT HOLD YOU TO THAT. MY DOCTOR ASK FOR A 15 LBS LOST AFTER I HAD THE FIRST SURGERY (I WENT IN 8/27/14 FOR REVISION, BUT HE FOUND THE BAND HAD ATTACHED ITSELF TO MY LIVER AND THE PORT HAD EMBEDDED ITSELF IN ME EVEN THOU HE HAD TOTALLY UNFILLED ME IN APRIL. SO I HAD A 2 HOUR PLUS SURGERY TO GET IT OUT. RESCHEDULED FOR BYPASS IN DEC.). I DIDN'T LOSE THE 15 LBS EVEN GAINED A LITTLE. HE JUST SPOKE TO HOW GREAT I HAD DONE ONLY GAINING LIKE 5 LBS WITH NO BAND IN 4 MONTHS. HEY HOPEFULLY YOUR DOCTOR WILL REALIZE HOW GREAT YOU'VE DONE TOO ESPECIALLY BEING ABLE TO EAT AGAIN WITH NO RESTRICTION. BE BLESSED DENISE

I travel all the time for business and carry a store with me! When we stop we go to a retaurant/ diner where I get something decent, or if fast food has to happen...... taco bell beef burrito supreme sucks right out of its tortilla. In and out you can order your burger protein style and they will make it wrapped in lettuce with no bun it is good! Fries go down great they are evil, I really have to use will power to stay away from them! I always have on me some or all of these when I leave on a trip: Luna Bars nuts fruit avacado string cheese While I am on the road sometimes these work as a meal. I used to travel with my magic bullet till I broke it and had protein shakes in the hotel, I loved it and need a new one!

Like weight. I could eat a whole Lean Cuisine and still be hungry :-( I don't ever "pay" for overeating-- only when I eat too fast or don't chew thoroughly. I have my 4 month post op appt on Tuesday. I really need to find out if I'm just one of the lucky ones or why I don't get that terrible pain when I have one bite too many. It is not making any sense to me :-(

Intro & lot's of questions!!
DanBar replied to fallqueen's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Life After the Band: only difference for me is no carbonation. Don't care about soda... miss beer. Other then that, I am amazed how it is the same you just eat less. Adjusting to foods: I have not had a problem with any foods at all. I have eaten anything I want. Don't know the percentage of slippage. If I had a chance to change it: First thought is no. My only other thought is I might have looked a little more into the sleeve just because it may be faster. Plus my insurance did not cover it. But what is faster for me is not faster for others and visa versa... There are plenty of people on this site that have lost weight just as fast as peope with all the other wls... so its is different for all. Now that I am on this journey, I am so excited to get it over with and get on with my life. This is the first time in my overweight life that I know I will finally see the other side. So that just makes me want to get this done... I also have my husband and my son that have done this with me all within a two week time span (june 09) and my husband says the same thing and my son only being 19 would not have done anything else but the band and I understand that. It is still diet and exercise that makes this work. It's not magic. No matter what comes out on the market for weight loss it always comes down to eating right and exercising, bottom line. The band is just a tool that helps stop hunger and that is half the battle. The other half is in your head and why you are overweight anyway. Both have to be fixed or it won't work or it will just come back again someday. Also until you get your band to the right fill amount, it takes just as much will power as regular dieting. I don't think we are told that enough pre banding, but it's reality. Or it is for the three post surgery people that live in my house. So with that said... Go for it and don't look back. You do what the dr's tell you and it will work. Start exercising immediatly... I waited for about 6 weeks just out of laziness and that is six weeks closer to my goal. I started exercising at the YMCA 14 days ago and I have not missed a work out. I give my self two days off each week. I hate exercise but for some reason this time, I am getting addicted to it. I think it's because AGAIN I know I will complete my mission. Good Luck to you... -
The loss of weight varies from one person to another. But don't be discouraged of youu think you haven't loss or loss enough weight fast enough. As weeks go on you will lose because your food consumption is much less and a Shod be healthy.

:blushing: I love your upbeat attitude. Well, this will not be the answer you wanted, but I'm going to say it anyway. It depends. On genetics. On how FAST you lose. On how reliable you are with exercise. On how well you have taken care of your skin in the past and how well you take care of it during loss (no sun damage, moisturize, etc). So on and so forth. That being said...I'm down a total of like 65 lbs so far, would like to lose another 35. The majority of my weight was gained in my thighs/butt/hip area. And yes...it's starting to look a lil droopy. I don't think it's realistic to think your skin is going to look the same as somebody that was never overweight. When I get down to size, I would adore a LBL. But you might get more of an idea of the skin changes by perusing the plastic surgery forum. :w00t: I was 27 when I got the surgery, btw...29, now. So I had a good 5 years on you.

Hi! You have to start somewhere, and you've already done that! WAY TO GO! You are not just working on weight, but your heart, lungs, and everything benefits! Your skin will glow and you will sleep better, too. When I was at my heaviest, I was 367. I couldn't even do the elliptical for over ONE minute at the YMCA. I would rest, get on, and do that over and over. It went up fast, tho, and before long, I was on for FIVE minutes before having to rest. Now, even tho I am still very heavy (287) I work out two hours a day...I take a spinning class, kickboxing, lifting, pilates, and have personal training two hours a week. My resting heart rate is 54 and my blood pressure is about 115/74 most of the time. Lots of benefits even tho my weight is far from goal. SO, you are starting out with the right attitude!! Keep it up!!!

Sorry to hear about your delay, especially since you started the pre op diet and have to start again. That was the hardest part of this whole thing for me. Had surgery Feb 3rd and was also worried about getting something since a lot of stuff is going around this time of year. Good luck, March 20 will come fast.

I was at my sweet spot for many months and lost most of my weight during this time. However, I only averaged about 1.5 pounds a week. I knew it was my sweet spot because the loss was steady and I wasn't hungry between meals and could only eat a limited amount of food before I was full. Really for me, I think the sweet spot is the point at which weight loss is no longer much of a struggle and it just happens if you are following the rules and exercising without feeling deprived. I would always lose a fast 5-10 pounds after a fill, but the sweet spot was long term with the 1.5 weekly loss on average.

I have had 5 fills since my 8/3 surgery. I have been dealing with "banster hell" since my surgery and I am 4 months post-op. I just assumed that I would have to push through until I get to my sweet spot and would start feeling that full feeling. I have been working my butt off with stopping when I get the slightly satisfied with my food, working out 4x a week and have been pushing through my hungry. When I went in for my 6th fill, I told my PA that I've been getting sick a few times a week because I get so hungry and it comes on so fast. She thought it was strange since I should have had 5cc's in my 10cc band. She thought maybe I had air in my band and pulled out my saline to take a look. I only had 1cc in my band. We'll, that does explain the hungry. I was told I probably have a leak and would need to have a flouroscopy to check it out. I did have that this past week and it doesn't look like my band is causing any issues (THANK GOD) it looks like I might have a slow leak right at the port. While I was still on the xray screen, they put in 2.5cc' in my band. I go back this Thursday to check my levels to see if they have decreased. My doctor did tell me my port is have a large angle and even if I do not have a leak, he was going to replace the port anyway. It would be a 20 minute procedure and I would be in and out. I do feel better knowing that I'm not crazy not understanding why I'm still always hungry and not understanding after 5 fills how much longer I could continue on. I am upset thinking that I have to continue to push until I get to my sweet spot after the port has been replaced. I am so glad I said something because I really have been pushing myself with 800-900 calories a day without any restriction and working out as much as I can. Has anyone else dealt with this? Can you give me some insight on how things are after the port has been replaced?
