    Exercise Addiction

@@Inner Surfer Girl Interesting article. Its a good reminder to keep behaviors in check. Let the medical professionals diagnose any disorder. Many of us had unhealthy behaviors with food and our weight before surgery. (Some meet the criteria for eating disorders) It's not surprising to see some people with eating and exercising disorders after surgery. Its also not surprising to see some patients turn into healthy athletes or trainers. .
  2. Hi All, I am about 2 weeks Post Op and eating as normal, but some of the weight that I lost preop and immediately post op has started to come back slightly (not much 1 lb or 2). Since I have not had my first fill which is scheduled in another 2 weeks, is it normal to be worried about seeing no progress just yet? I am wondering, was this worth it, I don't see any weight loss yet. Will the true weight loss begin after I get my first fill? HELP! :omg:

    randomness...2 weeks post-op

i will be meeting with my surgeon on friday. looking forward to that. maybe he will pull off these steri-strips! tuna, turkey and gravy, and mashed potatoes are all that ive been eating his week. yummy tho! im going to try scrambled eggs for lunch tomorrow! my husband says he can definitely tell im losing weight from the belly region. it makes me happy to hear but i wish i could see it. anyway, im off to bed. just wanted to update so people know im still alive.
  4. I'm failing big time. I got sleeved in April and I have only lost 52 lbs. I'm really hungry most of the time and I'm snacking constantly. I'm just a failure when I thought no one could fail when getting sleeved. What can I do? I even gained weight
  5. Because I'm in Australia, it's actually already Friday for me here. So my weight for the challenge and the Friday morning WIs will be the same anyway. Start of challenge 77.2kg (thanks to putting on 0.7kgs over Christmas) Today 76.7 kgs (168.7lbs). Loss so far: about 1 pound.
  6. At 6 ft tall a healthy weight for you would be anywhere from 136 to 185. Since you have a large frame I would think toward the higher end would be better than the lower. I'm sure you'll figure it out when you get there.

    Who set your goal weigh?

According to my dr my goal weight is 175... Although I think that will be too high for my 5'4" frame. My goal is between 145-160... Who knows though. Whats more important to me is how I feel. I'd like to be a size 8. And I'm not sure what weight that puts me at exactly. So we'll see :-)

    Who set your goal weigh?

I set it. The doctor said it was about what size I wanted to be, not any charts. So my goal weight is a lot higher than what a chart would probably say.

    Nutrition/diet/dumping syndrome?

I can't say yet that I've been around the block on this journey but I can talk about my experience with dumping. I started in the hospital during recovery when they gave me two cups of Apple sauce. Me thinking it was ok since I was in the hospital ate it. After that time I worked on figuring out how much sugar I could have and it worked out to around 3 to 5 grams. Not much and it did catch me sometimes when I didn't read a label. It wasn't long before it figured out that dumping was a great way to loss weight and stop the hard bowel movements. I progressed this way for around six months and then the dumping stopped. In its place came reactive hypoglycemia. It's a terrible sickening feeling and forces me to stay away from strong sweets. I'm not saying this will happen to you because many of us don't get dumping I'm just telling you my experience. Best of luck to you.
  10. My wife and I were discussing my band and she asked whether my progress was normal. I was banded on 12/30 and have lost between 15-17 pounds since the procedure. I go for my first fill in a couple of weeks. From everything I've read, I thought your progress up until the first fill would be pretty static and then progress after each successive fill. Anyone have any advice or info they can offer? Thanks.

    wow is this hard

Oh - gosh - I am finishing my second day as well and I am thinking , "How am i ever going to do this?" The ONLY thing that is keeping me going is knowing they wont do my surgery if I dont lose the weight - I could eat a rolled up newspaper right now, I think..........
  12. Ive been reading a lot of these threads and have read about people losing weight and there stomachs getting smaller and then needing a whole new smaller band! Does this happen often? Does it happen more to people that need to lose a ton of weight? Why use such a big band to begin with?
  13. I am posting an article I just found online from Psychology Today. I am posting it here because this could be a complication of any weight loss surgery, with the lack of carbs we are able to eat after surgery. I am presurgery and struggle with depression NOW, so I am interested in your personal journey or comments about depression you may have experienced AFTER your surgery. Thanks in advance. food that would feed a gnat, weight loss is inevitable. So little food can be eaten at a time that patients are told not to drink Water at mealtime because doing so leaves no room for food. Pounds seem to melt off, leaving the post-operative patients optimistic about improvedsupplements. Eating too much causes severe nausea and pain, another unpleasant but avoidable side effect if the temptation to take one too many bites is overcome. However, some problems don’t disappear as quickly as the weight, and for some, may persist for years. Anxiety, depression and chocolate again might put you into a permanent funk. But the depressions reported both in the scientific literature, and in the hundreds of personal anecdotes on gastric surgery blog sites, suggests otherwise. Some have associated depression with the very low-calorie Protein and supplements to prevent muscle, Vitamin and mineral loss. Even though tryptophan is one of the amino acids making up protein, studies done over several decades at MIT showed that when protein is eaten, little or no tryptophan enters the brain. Low and/or inactive serotonin is associated with depressed mood and anxious mood, sleep is by taking prescription sleep medication,” is not an uncommon description of persistent wakefulness of many post-surgical patients. According to some of their reports, the insomnia lasts for months and even years. Some people reported taking melatonin but in such large doses (the correct dose is 0.3 mg) that it shut off their body’s own production of this hormone and stopped working. Others would attempt to limit the use of prescription drugs for fear of addiction, but eventually give in after several sleepless nights. Would eating more carbohydrates help? Might more serotonin help calm and soothe the mind so it stops racing around like a gerbil on a running wheel and allow sleep to come? No one disputes the life-saving consequence of bariatric surgery as it removes or decreases the many health problems of excessive weight. But unless depressed, insomniac individuals find some way to feel and sleep better, they are a risk for regaining weight and losing their health. Call it an unexpected blindside of a surgery meant to make life easier to begin with.

    Am I going crazy?

What worked for me banded Aug 27 down 103 no fills , my dietitian told me that my calorie count needed to be 1500-1300 a day for proper weight lost for my body type. So find out your calorie intake that is needed for your body style and get some type of food tracker that has a activity tracker to see calories burned to what you eat. My gym Anytimefitness has a free website like I explain when you join
  15. I can not do it daily, or even weekly. If it doesn't go down enough it throws my day off. And Lord have mercy if it goes up. Right now, while single digits won't make or break me I'm weighing every 3-4 weeks...it's a guaranteed loss from the previous weight and I haven't stepped off the scale without a Cheshire sized grin on my face yet. Once I'm at goal I'll probably weigh weekly to make sure I'm staying within 5 pounds of it. It's interesting how even this part of the journey is individual for each of us, what works for one doesn't work for another. We all have to learn what motivates and what discourages us.
  16. Depends upon where you are with this process.... I just came back from the gym...got on their super-duper digital computerized scale with the display mounted on the wall.... Weight is right where it was 6-12 months ago (perhaps-probably longer) It has not moved, but I am ecstatic with that...and I feel everything is right with the world (well, sort of)
  17. I'm using the Biochem Natural as well! Not big on the flavor but now that I'm getting ready for full liquids I can mix it up with something other than Water and experiment a bit. I've been living on All One Weight Loss Formula Cocoa. It has only 1 gram of sugar, and 100 calories but it's only 14g of Protein (but a lot of great Vitamins and minerals as well). However, it's so thin and easy tasting that I've been able to drink them 3-4 times a day and getting closer and closer to that protein requirement! I just bought GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Unflavored but haven't tried it yet. I don't usually buy from GNC but I read great reviews on this product and it's 21 g protein / 2g sugar and 110 calories. I read that it mixes very well and tastes decent so I'll be using this and the Biochem to mix in with things for extra protein. Not sure if I mentioned the Soup in this thread but check out Pacific Natural Foods organic carton (like the soy milk cartons) soup (in most health food stores). My thin liquid stage got a LOT more interesting when I opened up the French Onion! Looking forward to Sunday (full liquids) to try the Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato and the Butternut Squash!

    New round 2

Hello all, It's been a long time in coming for me, and I ready - hopefully! for the final battle with my weight. I had my band done in November of 2004 by Dr. Kuri and his team in MX. Lost ~70 lbs, got married, had two gorgeous babies, and somewhere in there my port and tubing broke. 5 1/2 years later, and back to my original weight, I am starting over. Surgery to repair my port and tubing is scheduled for Monday 1/3/11 I am so ready to win this fight - for good.

Feeling like Im not making progress

Your body might still be in recovery mode from the surgery. I'm a slow loser so I understand your frustration. I think that really keeping hydrated has started my weight loss again...oh & take your measurements vs just using the scale. If you're eating "right" & you're active, I bet you are losing inches & you don't even realize it.
  21. how do you know if your stomach is getting ''bigger''? I will have my sleeve next week and i'm very afraid to enlarge my stomach after sugery. The truth is that I am not able to eat vegetables...so i'll have to fill my stomach with something else....I eat meat with no problem at all. This is good shortly after surgery but later...?I know that in the futur, my portions will have to be small, but do I will be able to eat meat, milk products, cheese, fruits.....anything else but vegetables....yark!!!! Do you think i'll be able to lose weight without vegetables in my diet? What your diet looks like after surgery???? Thank you to help me with my diet issues.

    Pintrest

Also try searching WLS or weight loss surgery boards. I have found many recipes on there, you may have to tweak them a bit to make them sleeve friendly. Lots of soups are good meals for us too. Quinoa is a great protein to add to soups or make a sweet morning cereal. Lots of options, you can always change a recipe and add things we can eat and leave out what we can't.

Why do I dislike myself more now?

I agree with this 100%. I was doing great with my weight loss and then I saw pictures of the current me and got insanely depressed about how much further I have to go. I only saw someone who is fat and have been on a 2 week fight to not gain any weight because my eating habits have regressed so much. It is the self-dislike/ the self-hate that must be feeding that. Its been said on this board time and time again that losing weight doesn't solve any pre-existing mental problems (on the whole). Hang in there manatee- I think it can take some people years to get comfortable with their new selves. Our bodies have changed faster than our minds can, possibly. I'm hoping to get my head back to where it needs to be soon, don't want to gain any of the weight I've worked so hard to lose. Glad that you haven't had a slide down bad food mountain. faith- thanks for the link to that thread- good read

Why do I dislike myself more now?

I was in denial about my weight for a good long time. Not that I thought I was thin, I just didn't think it was THAT bad! I've lost about 80 lbs, and the longer I sit at this weight, the bigger I seem to see myself. Not sure what's up with that. It worries me to wonder what I'm going to think of my body when I am at goal...

Why do I dislike myself more now?

I feel the same way! I have done pretty well with the band and my subsequent lifestyle changes—but my head still needs to catch up! I still dress like I am trying to hide my body (even my boss told me to buy new cloths)… And I have found that when I look in my full length mirror I eyes go straight to my tummy. My friend also told me that when I am out, I tend to put my hand on my stomach (or where more of it used to be!) like I am trying to hid it. I think when the weight comes off- we start to get greedy… I want it to come faster and in the “right” places (I didn’t notice how big my thighs were until my tummy got smaller!). I still hate pictures—especially the ones which are still unflattering after all my hard work. What helps me is to remember back to before the surgery… how hard weight watchers was (and how much hard it was when I gained the weight back and plus 10)… how I would sometimes have to leave a button undone on my pants….. How much I ate when I binged and how it made me feel…. And I especially remember the feeling of lying in bed and hopelessly wondering what life would be like if I was a “normal” weight. I may not be at normal weight… yet… but at least it is not hopeless! I try to keep those memories because the tend to fade with time and I need too keep the perspective that I am a healthier person now emotionally and physically no matter what the reflection looks like!
