Husband not supportive
Sajijoma replied to christina Abdo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I went through this with my husband too in the beginning. He didn't understand how much pain I was in on a daily basis or how much torture I went through on a daily basis from my weight itself and from trying to diet and being so hungry all the time it hurt too bad to sleep. I sat down and poured my heart out into a letter and gave it to him. I even linked to a bunch of different YouTube videos for him to watch both from Bariatric surgeons and from people just like me who have had the surgery. It helped him wrap his mind around why I wanted to do such a thing. We still had bumpy patches throughout the whole process including him refusing to read my post op care book to see what it was I needed him to do since he missed the class. Since surgery though, as he's seen me gain back use of my body that I had lost and to see me smile again and be happy and active, he's good now. He was afraid in the beginning that I could die and that this was just another in a long list of "lose weight schemes" like all the pills, the various diet companies-weight watchers, Jenny Craig, nutrisystem that we poured so much money into with no real results, and that I was putting my faith in a surgery because I was out of options. Now he knows better. -
One week down on the pre-op diet, one to go! This time next Monday I'll be joining you all on the losers' bench, and I can't wait! I think I've reached the saturation point on researching, though. I'm finding myself worrying about things that I don't need to think about yet, like what I'm going to be able to eat on the cruise my husband and I are leaving for on April 1. One day at a time, I keep telling myself. By the time I get there, I'll know what I can and can't eat. One question I do have is about supplements. My surgeon and nutritionist really haven't given me much guidance. Lots of encouragement (you can do this! you got this!) but not a lot of information. Surgeon just has me taking Bariatric Advantage Multivitamins. Is that enough? Should I be taking more, like maybe B12 and/or Probiotics? Anyone else from CT on this thread?

HELLO JANUARY SLEEVERS!
KnowNothing replied to IrishGermanRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey chavezmommy! I've mentioned on my previous posts that I stop losing weight after my fifth week after surgery and I have followed a low carb, moderate Protein and high fat diet since then with great results. Sometimes I overeat and I've been fluctuating between 60 and 57kg (my goal weight is 55kg). I have incorporated since last week a juice fast of four days that led me to an over 2kg weight gain but an amazing feeling of accomplishment. I stopped the juice fast and went for a 24 hour fast of non-caloric-liquids like tea, coffee and Water. After the fast I ate a bariatric portion dinner and went back to 57.5kg again. It had taken me a lot of trials and errors to find what is best for me and definitely I believe that this lifestyle is the safest and must correct for me because it prevents me from binging and brings me towards my weight goal. I also would like to add that my blood tests looks amazing: Vitamins, minerals, etc are all great, blood sugar, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol (the bad one) are perfect, so there is no reason that I'm wrongdoing. Let me know if you want to try this! Best, Ariana -
Dissonances...
HanSolo1977 replied to HanSolo1977's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is a bariatric class... it's not limited to nutrition. I have a "coach" and a dietician who will be on these calls. It's completely unrelated to my surgery program. -
Maddie’s New Life - A Story of Self Love
MaddieSpahr posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have struggled with my weight since I was five years old. Late in 2016- at 28 years old at my heaviest weight- I had my first appointment with a bariatric surgeon in Akron, Ohio where I live and began the steps towards gastric bypass. I was so scared. But I knew that I would rather risk my life than live like this forever. I feared that my parents would bury me in 20 years and that my sister would become an only child. I knew I had to do something. I had tried everything. Between the ages of 8-28 I had tried everything under the sun. I could not lose/maintain the weight loss. On June 26, 2017- I had gastric bypass surgery. I have lost/maintained 180 pound weight loss. I have a whole new life. It is quite beautiful. I look forward to living everyday. I share my journey on Instagram - (my name on there is Maddie5088) and I also have a public Facebook Page called Mornings with Maddie. I created a blog almost a year ago that focuses on sharing my journey, creating/sharing healthy recipes. You can find it here - foodfitnessandbeauty.com I share body positivity, kindness, self love, inclusivity, healthy recipes, grocery hauls, I do monthly giveaways, how to meal prep, affordable/easy meals for bariatric patients and I do Q and As for Bariatric patients. I have felt very called to share my journey with the bariatric community! I hope you come follow along my story! It’s been a heck of a ride! Xoxo Maddie- 4 replies

Coffee confusion...need some more experienced advice
McButterpants replied to Tamosy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I'm McButterpants and I'm a coffeeholic. I was self-pay, so I have a surgeon and what I call my local doc that is a bariatric surgeon that is providing my aftercare. The two are polar opposites when it came to reintroduction to food - the local doc being much more conservative than the surgeon. My surgeon required me to be caffeine free when he operated. I struggled with caffeine withdrawal, but go thru it and 2 weeks before surgery I was caffeine free. My local doc said no caffeine for 2 months, then we would address it. The reasons she gave me for no caffeine directly after surgery is the diuretic affect of the coffee, so you can get dehydrated quickly - a real issue right after surgery. Also the acid on caffeinated coffee can upset your new tummy. I honestly had one cup of real coffee per week before my two months was up - coffee helped me with some mild constipation and it always worked when other things didn't. At my two month meeting with the local doc she approved ONE cup of real coffee per day and made me pinkie promise to not go back to my old habit of 3-4 cups per day. It was a good compromise. Most days I only have one cup of real coffee. Best of luck you to you my fellow coffee-lover! Bean on. -
I thought this post was appropriate for this thread too, to help clarify recent questions. I just received a copy of this thread from one of my clients. I want to clarify the differences between Dr. Valencia's own practice that that of Hospital Angeles and "BeLite Weight". Dr. Martin Salvador Valencia FACS has opened a practice in Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico. Previously, Dr. Valencia finished his surgical residency in 1998. He was then appointed as Associate Professor of the Advanced Laparoscopy Fellowship at ABC Medical Center (One of the most prestigious medical schools in Mexico). He was then invited as a visiting professor of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA. He was a full time professor there. When not doing surgeries as part of the UCLA bariatric team, he traveled all over the world proctoring other surgeons in minimally invasive bariatric surgical techniques. He continues to teach at UCLA part time while building his own practice in Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico. All this information is not meant as a commercial, just an explanation in my attempt to clear up the confusion. Dr. Valencia was invited to be part of the staff at Hospital Angeles in Tijuana, one of the finest hospitals in Mexico. He began to perform Lap Band surgeries for the hospital. However, he additionally has his own patients. Dr. Lopez is also on the staff of Hospital Angeles. Belite Weight represents Hospital Angeles. Belite does NOT represent Dr. Valencia's in any way. I am Dr. Valencia's coordinator for his practice. Dr. Valencia is NOT part Dr. Lopez’s nor is he “partners” with Dr. Lopez. Dr. Valencia has his own team. I personally do not agree with the practices of Belite. I believe Belite is deliberately using Dr. Valencia's credentials and expertise in the forefront of all their advertising to further there own business rather than doing what they should be doing, selling the lap band services of Hospital Angeles. I believe them to be unethical in their business practices and I would not recommend using their services. I'm sure not every one would agree, but that is my opinion. For various reasons, Dr. Valencia very recently decided to stop doing surgeries for Hospital Angeles. He will concentrate on his own patients and building his practice in Tijuana and Ensenada. If anyone has any questions regarding Dr. Valencia's status, affiliations, etc., I would be happy to answer any and all questions. My best to everyone here and I wish all of you a healthy successful weight loss journey!

I am in my fifth month of supervised dieting. I have Humana Insurance. Can any of you tell me if there is a set criteria that they are looking for when they are deciding whether to approve or not. I want to make sure my doctor does not leave anything out that they may jump on for denial. When I see him we talk about calorie counting and exercise and whether or not I have lost any weight. Does he need to write a letter? At any rate, after the 20th I am suppose to call the bariatrics office to set up my all day appointment I guess to see the nutritionist, pych, labs etc. I really don't know what all they do. I know I will have to have pulmonary testing and cardiac testing. Please enlighten me to any other information that may help me. I am going to have surgery at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY by Dr. Weiss and Dr. Oldham. Cheryl

I had my surgery done in Mexico with Dr Corvala through an “intermediary” (who is giving me free airfare for my post bariatric cosmetic surgery in either Costa Rica or Panama). So far in the past month I have lost 25lbs. Still have loads to go, but I am plugging along. Anyhow, the “intermediary” has been approached by a television news show that wants to do a story about a patient going abroad for this surgery. I want to help them out but I do not want to risk TV exposure because I am hiding from an ex but I told them I would see if any of my friends or family want to do it but they are being slow in their decision so anyone on this forum from the Louisville area that would be interested in a discounted lap band surgery and is willing to be on TV get in touch with me and let me send you more details. You need to be able to leave in the next two weeks. It is a great opportunity for someone who cannot afford this in the US. :eyebrows:

Hi Shelly-- I have Dr. Lusco too--and I just love him!! I can't say enough about him and about that whole group of people in the bariatric program. Debbie and Lana at the hospital are wonderful if you have any questions about insurance and Debbie has had the surgery herself so she can tell you about her experience. Kirk Evans, the exercise physiologist, is great to give you a kick in the pants to get you moving after surgery. I highly recommend participating in the exercise program--I even stayed on for 6 months after my free 6 weeks was up to make sure I developed good habits. Now I'm at the YMCA but I plan on going back to visit and might even go back to work out. Kirk is terrific about answering questions if you need help with your fitness goals!! Let me know if you have any questions and good luck to you!! :tt1:)

Hello everyone this is my first entry . I am 37 years old and am considering having the lap banding procedure done. I have a health problem known as vasa vagel syncope and I was wondering if any of you may have this condition as well ? My concern is the location of the band and the compression that is there around the stomach and I was wondering if this procedure may make this worse or better for me . I have talked with Dr. Oldham and Dr. Weiss from the Bluegrass Bariatrics and they tell me that they are unsure of the side effects for me and suggested that I post on a chat room to see if anyone else can share their experiences with me . Please help if you can . Thanks!!!!!!!

I live across the bridge & had it done at Clark Memorial by Dr. McMillian. Staff & hosp. were great. They have a program with a bariatric coordinator who you see weekly to help you for the first 12 weeks. They also have monthly support groups. Good luck & look around.

Documenting co-morbidities, BMI under 40
SuzanneG replied to daco525's topic in Insurance & Financing
I was BMI of 35.1 and denied by BC/BS the first time through. Then I assembled an appeal package, very much like your initial request. I went to all my docs, pediatrist, gastrointerologist, GYN, GP, and asked each for a letter of support. Then I wrote 2 letters of my own and attached them to the package and sent it to the bariatric doctor. By this time my BMI was 36.7 since I figured I would have to eat my way to approval. He submitted the appeal and it was approved. Best of luck to you. Sounds like you are on the right track. -
This looks like a good place to settle in...
AmyKPonyperson posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Y'all! I'm Amy from Texas, I'm not yet banded but I have my first visit with a bariatric specialist on Januray 4th, 2007. So I have been out scouting around for a support system that looked fun and helpful... this place beats the rest I've seen. I will be going to Dr Richard Collier in Conroe. Al little about me... I am 35, a recently remarried mother of two pugnacious preteen kids (and I say that with love! hehehe no - really they are great, but don't tell them! ). I love creating art and craft projects, singing, dancing, raising ponies, cooking and baking. I am 5'1" and I am starting at about 238 lbs. I figure my goal is somewhere in the 125-130 lb. neighborhood maybe, as that is around where I was in college before all this weight started showing up. I was no skinny-minnie, but that size worked for me. But really my ACTUAL goal is simply to be able to ride my ponies again without being cited for pony abuse!:nervous I am really looking forward to having this procedure done so I can get on with my plans. I think I do have realistic goals for weightloss speed and the amount of effort it will actually take to use this tool. I know, Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was my butt! What I am hoping is that, with this tool, I will be able to remove food as an object of obsession and make it what it is supposed to be - a necessity. Trust me I DO know what I'm SUPPOSED to eat (wink), my problem has just been the "wanna" behind it and my T-Rex-like apetite! Hopefully, having physical restrictions put on my intake ability, I can refocus my head on what I need to eat and making the most of nutrition in that smaller stomach space! I look forward to meeting a lot of you on here, so you can help me through my wobbly times and cheer me when I am being a good girl! :clap2: Toodles! Amy -
Hey, I'm doing both!! Just let me know which outrageously overpriced boutique you'll be in and I'll meet you there. Actually, I'm of two minds about this walk, to be honest. The whole thing seems to be a thinly veiled commercial for bariatric surgery, and I'm not sure I like that idea. Maybe we can do our own 5K, just up Fifth Avenue! It still counts if you stick your head into three stores in every block.

Cbraessler-- You are in such good hands with that group of doctors. I see Dr. Lusco, but I know several people who are with Schuster. I can't say enough positive things about my experience with them all the way from the beginning until now. And that includes the girls in the bariatric office at the hospital who handle all of your scheduling, insurance, etc. as well as Kirk Evans and Lin Gant in the exercise program. I refer to Kirk as the Exercise Nazi but personally I needed that kick in the pants myself--and continue to allow him to torture me 3 times a week. It has helped so much and I feel unbelievably better about myself just these few short months later. Just remember that the band is only a tool and you still have to work really hard to see the pounds come off but it is so worth it. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. Good luck with your journey and keep us all posted on your progress.

Dr Korman in Marina Del Rey. 1-800 491-1977. LA bariatric center. I love him. Had a last minute insurance problem so I couldn't do it. After all the fees I paid to Owens, I should have just stayed with Korman.

Remedy for constipation?
bloreorbust replied to jlmckee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try a laxative suppository. When I have got constipation really bad, that did the trick in about 20 minutes. Then once you get that taken care of, take a probiotic and stool softener daily to keep everything moving. The walmart generic stool softener works great, and I like the Bariatric Advantage probiotic. We all know that pain and hope you get it resolved soon. -
Ah yeah this does seem to be a common theme for the UK. For the protein I am making sure at the very least it is half to 2/3 rds of each meal with lean protein like chicken, fish or lentils and then vegetables for the rest of it like carrots, potato & peas. I found a cook book here on Amazon that I am going to buy today, so hopefully that will have some ideas, its called: Gastric Sleeve Cookbook: Top 100 recipes for every stage of bariatric surgery recovery by Shannon Henderson Looking at guides from the US: https://www.drdkim.net/ask-the-dietitian/meal-plan/ and another one here: https://www.ucsfhealth.org/education/dietary_guidelines_after_gastric_bypass/

July 2023 Surgery Buddies UPDATES!!!
Amerime replied to Inspectorjh84's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You both are doing great!!! I was sleeved 7/6/23 as well- the recovery went well. I do not believe my sleeve was too restrictive as I can eat small meals without discomfort. I do limit my caloric intake to under 1000 calories per day (I track) and I do not eat simple carbs. I have been eating some fruits which I am cutting back on. I weighed in 3 days ago at 187 lbs, so I am down 43 lbs post surgery, 80 lbs since my first bariatric appointment. I have been in the middle of stall for the last 2 weeks. Hoping it breaks soon. The weight loss has definitely slowed, but based on reading others' experience, I am not going to worry at this point. I wanted to be at least 167 lbs by the 6 month mark, but I've lost very little in the last 4 weeks- don't think I'll make it. Anyway, the goal is what matters. Good luck to you all! -

Disappointed doesn't even begin to describe what I currently feel...
Sajijoma replied to sassyfrass23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So sounds to me that everyone isn't talking to each other. When you went to your first initial appt, your surgeon's office should have sent in something to the insurance stating that you plan to pursue surgical options for weightloss and then they'd gather from insurance a list of what they want you to do to qualify. After that, you should have started whichever program your insurance expects. For my insurance, and because I went to a Bariatric center of excellence, I did a 90 day program with 3 NUT visits and a psych eval to get approved. Had I had a different insurance plan, I would have been required to go on the 6 months supervised weightloss, psych eval plan and to know which one to put me on meant they contacted insurance to find out. So the fact you've been on a 6 month plan means someone somewhere had to contact your insurance to find out what your requirements would be and that would have been your pre authorization. Now that you've completed the program, your packet and all the notes about your weightloss are submitted for authorization to perform the surgery. So maybe it's just that they aren't understanding what you mean by pre authorization? I hope for your sake. The idea of waiting and having to be on supervised weightloss for a year to get surgery seems beyond cruel. -
Hello, I am new to this forum. I had my bypass on January 29th in a Hong Kong hospital. The surgery went well and I have not had any complications except recently, in the past couple of weeks, I am developing sharp pain underneath the healed scars. It feels like the fat beneath is being torn apart. It got so bad this morning that I couldn't even get out of bed without squeezing my fat together to my side. I told my surgeon about this but he is not particularly concerned as long as i'm not developing other symptoms like fever or vomiting. It's incredibly lonely for a bariatric patient in Hong Kong. The community here is almost non-existent and I long to meet buddies who are in similar progress with me to share and cheer me on along the way. I have so many questions about exercises, nutritions and diet and often there is no one to turn to because the support in HK for bariatric patient is next to nothing. So a lot of the time I'm just making things up along the way just hoping i'm doing the right thing. It would be good to have a buddy...

Calling All March 18 Sleevers
Leleboo replied to Melinda1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Came home today was discharged at 5:00. My nurses told the Bariatric docs that they should hire me as a patient advocate because they were very impressed with my recovery, all I did was follow the advice of those who have gone before me. They said that I should be the poster child for this surgery. I feel very fortunate to have had such an easy time so far and I hope that it continues. All my fellow sleevers who are having a rough time you are in my prayers.
