    Drinking

Yes, on special occasions only. I have no problem with them and can't tell the difference post-band from pre-band. My doctor doesn't like drinking because he thinks that his patients might just exchange one addiction for another. At his monthly information meeting, he showed statistics that showed while people who had weight loss surgery had lower rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer, they had higher rates of alcoholism, drug abuse, and suicide. He also says that alcohol are just empty calories and slow weightloss. With that in mind, I still drink at special occassions.
  2. Has anyone had alcoholic drinks after being banded
  3. Wow thats scary! I am glad you are doing ok now. I just today finally tackled all my adhesive spots.I was sleeved on the 29th. The rubbing alcohol worked great but I was very careful to keep the cotton balls away from my staples. Lori
  4. mine just rubbed off...while dry....didn't use anything but dr did suggest rubbing alcohol...if needed
  5. I used alcohol wipes on the areas away from my cuts, then as the tape came off I used lotion with Vitamin E and finally got it all off...I think!

    Tape Tape And More Tape

Ribbing alcohol can work. However, be really careful with it. The Bariatric Coordinator at my hospital said just to keep doing soap & water & it will eventually come off. He said they've seen many people come back to the hospital with infections because of trying to use various things to get the residue off. Therefore, if you try something else, be very careful!
  7. Hi folks Found this site whilst browsing lap band procedures out of desperation. I'm Kim, 46, live in Southampton, and I've never had a weight problem until I had a number of gynae related problems then a partial hysterectomy in 2007 then the rest out in 2011. Been on HRT since then and by weight has balloned. I am only 5 feet 1 so every stone makes me look like a hippo. Seeing photographs of me recently has made be so depressed, no matter how little I eat nothing seems to make a difference. I have been on a low calorie liquid diet for a few weeks now and haven't lost a pound; I feel something is quite wrong with my metabolism but my GP says just eat less and move move more. The moving thing would be easy except I have a disability, chronic asthma and cannot walk very far without excrutiating pain in my feet. I suffer from calcified tendons which can happen at any time, at the moment I have calcific achilles tendons and can barely walk more than 5 paces without having to stop and also have calcific tendonitis in my shoulders which prevent me from swimming. A few years ago I could swim 100 lenghts of my local pool in 90 mins, today I would be lucky to manage one :-( I know that loosing weight would help my physical conditions and improve my general wellbeing but as I can't exercise I am on a road to nowhere. It seems a gastric band is my only hope to restrict my food intake to a bare minimum. What upsets me is that I am not a massive eater anyway, never eat bread, don't like sweets, rarely eat chocolate, and have cut my alcohol intake to a few social glasses of wine at the weekends. I don't know what has made me put on so much weight but it seems that nothing I do works to resolve the weight problems. I am going to look into going to Belgium for the surgery, there seems to be a lot of people that have chose this option. Can anyone point me in the right direction here ? I know there are many posts on this and the particular surgeon but to save me hours wading through them is there a quick bullet point list on how to contact said Surgeon, make the arrangements, what to expect etc ? Thanks for letting me having a rant....feel a bit better now :-) Have a great weekend K x
  8. The difference between being a food addict and an alcoholic is that you can live without alcohol, but you can't live without food. I think all of us on here are fat men/women looking to not be the fattest in the room! You are in good company here, but a local support group would probably even be better!

    Personal Trainer Cost

Torose, I am not sure if I am doing anything "special" or different. I try to eat my Protein (60g) , then vegetable, then starch. I also try to drink 64 ounces of Water, very little juice and I don't drink soda. I try to work out everyday but realistically, I average 3-4 days per week on the elipitical, for 25 minutes. I don't eat more than 1 cup of food per meal. I eat 3-4 meals per day and I eat fruits. I don't drink alcohol, also. I attend a monthly support meeting, visit my dietician and doctor, for follow-up visits and tests. Also, I try to track my food and exercise on www.MyFitnessPal.com.

    Sweet Success 6 Month Bandanniversary

Yesterday was my 6th month anniversary of being banded (was banded November 30th). My starting weight was 257. My weight was 247 the day of surgery. I currently have 4.5 cc in a 14 cc band. My current weight is around 217! I AM 40 POUNDS THINNER THAN I WAS AROUND THANKSGIVING. In fact, I've lost about two turkeys myself or 8 pounds of sugar or however you wanna look at it. TO ME, THAT'S GREAT! Sure it's not the big numbers some people are pulling, but it's amazing for me. To show you how amazing I'm including an old journal entry.......... THE OLD ME TALKING: ".... During the weekend it was really difficult to count calories when it feels like every calorie is a big mistake. So the good thing was that I started counting again, the bad thing is that I ate over 2,500 calories today, and I know that's not conducisve to weight lost..... After my appointment I was sooooo drained, I didn't go to the gym. I just couldn't get in the right mindset. I have to be in the right mind set and do things in a certain way when it comes to working out. Then I felt bad because I shoulda, coulda, woulda went. This is the type of thing I was talkin about. I feel like if I was a better, different, person I would have pulled things together and went. "..... THE NEW ME TALKING: I used to be a size 22. NOW I AM A SIZE 16. I used to hate going to the gym. NOW (althought I dont love it, love it) I ENJOY THE GYM AND RARELY SKIP EXERCISING. I used to have trouble doing 15 mintues on the elliptical. NOW I CAN DO 60 MINUTES ON THE ELLIPTICAL, BUT WHAT I REALLY LOVE IS SPIN CLASSES!!! I used to be out of breath, and have back and knee pain from walking. NOW I CAN WALK FOR AN HOUR PLUS OUTSIDE! I used to be so fat that people thought i was pregnant. NOW PEOPLE TELL ME I LOOK NICE, CAUSE I DO! Although every day is not perfect with the band. Things are so much better than they were! I still struggle with my food addiction everyday. The band does not cure the addiction just like locking the liquor cabinet doesn't cure alcoholism. Food addiction is a real thing and mine isn't going anywhere. I still have to fight myself to make the right choices. AND I DO MAKE MISTAKES, OFTEN, TOO OFTEN. But I've learn to pick myself up and start again the next day! And I you can see I used to eat upwards of 3,000 calories a day. Now I eat about half that (it should be less) but i'm wortking on it! The band isn't for everyone, but it's working for me. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE OUT THERE!

Educate Me Sf Vs. No Sugar Added

A lot of SF products use sugar alcohols to sweeten them. They have 2 cals/gram instead of 4. They all end in OL, i.e.: mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol, etc. It is what is in ex-lax. It causes you to retain a lot of water in the gut and can cause terrible gas and diarrhea. SF jello is usually OK as are popsicles. Discuss this with your dietician or MD.
  12. The shot does NOT have to be in the stomach. It can be anywhere on the body as long as that portion of the body is meaty. Arm, leg or butt. I personally take it in the arm. Be careful tho not to rub it or it will turn into a lump. After you inject just wipe the area with the alcohol pad lightly. Don't rub, squeeze or press down on it. I REPEAT "Don't rub, squeeze or press down on it." those lumps will remain there for about few days to a week and they are bothersome. Gluck

    Wine Post Op

I love wine and it works just fine. I waited until 6 months out to try a margarita--it was fine, except WOW, alcohol hits so much harder than it did preop! Just be careful. It's going to be really easy to overdo, and your inhibitions may lower a LOT faster than they did before. I used to could drink a margarita and just feel a little more relaxed; now, 1/2 of one, and I'm in full-on "must sleep now" mode--yeah, I'm a party animal--NOT. I'm one of those sleepy drinkers, LOL. So just be aware--your lower body weight makes a big difference in your alcohol tolerance.

    Sleeved And 21

I think if I can't do just about any solid food, I shouldn't try drinking. ESP with the risk of the acid, ulcers, and low tolerance. Also, when you do get there, there's a line called Skinny Girl that does mixed drinks and such. Less calories, sugars, etc. or maybe try a non carbonated bottled drink (like Mikes, just let it sit until it goes flat?) to test the waters of your new alcohol tolerance.

    Wine Post Op

I am also 6 weeks out, and have tried a few sips of wine here and there with no bad effects even tried a beer but only got through about a quarter of it, before it got warm and I lost interest. I have had no side effects. Since we still have our duodenum we wouldn't have the same reaction to alcohol that some one with a RNY woul dhave. I agree though don't over do it. I am interested to hear about trying Jack on ice. I was a big whickey person before surgery. I haven't had it in months do to pre op and none since surgery but I am interested in how it affected someone post op.

    I Need A Glass Of Wine...lol ;)

I just read in one of my books that one drink can be the equivalent of 5!! Start with a teeny tiny bit!! I think the reason they say a year is because alcohol has lots of calories and no nutrients so it can thwart your weight loss efforts. So I think I little would be fine...just be careful!! Cheers!!

    I Need A Glass Of Wine...lol ;)

Be prepared if you drink any alcohol....it affects you in very big ways in even shorter times. I have become quite the "cheap date" since my surgery...lol

    Wine Post Op

I am also 6 weeks post op and I had a glass of Sangria over the weekend.. Went down fine...no issues... I drank it slow over the course of about an hour... Nice to know that it didn't burn.. I'm not so sure about any hard alcohol though... I have no desire to even try.. A glass of wine here and there is good for me!!
  20. This journey is definitely a learning experience and I keep learning and seeing new possibilities. Having what I would say is a less than great day at work, frustration, moodiness (me and others), TOM and just feeling like things are not in the best place. So this morning, I felt the need for a pick me up...went for the chocolate (alcohol would have been preferable but it was 10am), had 2 bites and that was enough to take the edge for a bit. Not wanting to succumb to the food hunger, had a tea and went to the gym to work out some frustration...a healthier way to deal with stress. Anyway at the gym, i tried (have been slightly attempting for a while) to do a sit up. I have never done a sit up (i dont even remember doing this as a kid). And all of a sudden I COULD!!!! It felt easy and simple, like i should have been doing it for years....my body just decided that it could.....score, definitely a fist pump, blog moment )))))) For lots of people the action of doing a sit up is nothing but to me it is huge!! And it another one of my physical goals that I have achieved. FYI I am stalled right now with another 30 or so pounds to go...but when I have these kinds of wins, the weight doesnt seem as important.

    Exhausted

Day 9 of pre-op shakes. 3 Protein shakes a day. I am tired and going to bed earlier, but I have stepped up my exercise. I'm doing 2 hours of Gazelle and walking 1-1/2 miles a day. Something that has picked me up a bit is a cup of decaff peppermint tea. Day 3 & 4 were the hardest for me, but I kept busy. I think one of the worst things you can do before surgery is to become sedentary. You know how when you exercise every single day and then you quit for a few days it gets hard to start back up? Well, when you have surgery you will be required to just walk the halls. You need to keep up the stamina, while you can, to make that go a little better. As you hit day 5, you may hit ketosis and the breath thing becomes an issue. I rinse my mouth out with non-alcohol based mouth wash (Biotene) and brush my teeth & floss a lot. I would never eat right after flossing, so it's also a good tool to use. Eager, I had a headache that lasted about 2 days, I promise you it will get better. Up your Water and make sure you are getting 64 ounces at the minimum. The busier you are the easier it is. Hopefully you will get to bed and fall asleep quicker because you kept busy and are tired out then. I'm a bit sleepy today but I'm going to have my shake, do a little more gazelle and then go for a walk and hop into bed and sleep and get up and do it again tomorrow. Good Luck, again I promise it does get easier!

    2 Week Pre-Op Diet

Drink a lot of Water, Propel 0 calorie 0 carb also was helpful. Brush your teeth and use a non-alcohol base mouthwash, Biotene works best for me. I also floss a lot, nobody eats right after they floss. When Ketosis hits the breath can get pretty nasty and dry mouth is the worst. * added - Decaff Peppermint or whatever flavor you like tea with a little Truvia or spenda is good to stop the craving and growling. I'm on 3 Protein shakes a day only on day 9 of 14. Day 3 & 4 were the hardest. Keep busy, walk and don't think about it.
