  1. Hey firefaerie, I never lost weight with the band. We are not sure if it's due to a defective band or my anatomy. The thought about replacing it came from my doc and that perhaps it would work this time. I'm skeptical and leaning to not going under.
  2. I believe it has slipped because I have restriction but no sense of fullness but my doctor says it isn't impossible because of the way it was anchored IF it's impossible THEN NO bander would ever have or HAD a SLIP and I know people that HAVE HAD SLIPS, what he's probably saying here is that with the "older" versions slipped MORE, then they discovered that by doing a pars flaccida technique it has reduced the % of slips. My doctor is recommending that I have plication surgery to reduce my stomach volume and that works well with existing bands. I am leaning towards getting it done because I am heading towards gaining all of the weight back. I am leaning towards plication because it seems to be the least invasive and no resectioning of internal organs. Has anyone else here had the plication surgery after the band? What are your thoughts. I'm playing Devil's advocate here... What happen's if you agree to Plication but since your Doctor didn't do any other tests on the band, Endo, Fluro and then does the Plication and finds a problem with the band and removes it, how would you feel? you might want to research more on Plication, sleeve etc..(not promoting either, when I'm done with the band that's it for me JMHO) Plication can fail too, (you can stretch the stomach,) any WLS surgery can, I guess I'm saying Any time they do surgery it's invasive, you just need to know what your willing to deal with on a personal level. And maybe find out First WHY the band isn't working for you any longer, your NOT ALONE, it happens. Good Luck on your journey~ LB Complications link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3038361/ Plication Link http://weightloss.clevelandclinic.org/gastricplication.aspx http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3397205/
  3. Well I will give you some info about me. I weigh 360lb and I would like to lose 120lb. I have a bad back I have been living with for years (over 15). I have a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease and the cartilage is very thin to gone between a couple disc. My doctor suggested to go until I can't stand the pain any longer then look into surgery. I know even with weight loss im going to have pain but my nsaids really help me. My weight loss doctor is wanting me to get RNY to lose more weight faster. He suggested for the back pain take tylenol and water therapy. I know tylenol and water therapy won't help me so im considering the sleeve. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I'm trying to decide between the two surgeries and its only two weeks away from surgery time
  4. Last year in January I weighed 289. In March I weighed 304. In April at my doctors office I weighed 310. I went back in October for a check up and weighed 367!!! I sat there and cried my eyes out, my PCP hugged me and said stop being hard on yourself and lets do something about it. Of course, I had blood work that following week which he discovered my thyroid was a little off. The next day I made an appointement to go to a seminar for weight loss surgery. It has really changed so many things about myself and the way I look at food. The race is deff. on!!!!
  5. I posted this on the insurance forum...but didnt get a response so I hoped I might get a little more exposure on the main forum...If anyone can help I would appreciate it!! Has anyone had any experience with approval through Healthnet/First Health? My company is based in CA and I am on the east coast ...as such it is my understanding that First Health is the contract provider for healthnet since I am remote from my corporate HQ. I have been trying to get an answer on what the criteria are to be banded and I am not sure they even know. I have gotten 3 answers literally from representatives of First health and Healthnet. The least stringent was a phone conversation where the rep said only "100 lbs overweight or under 100 with co morbidities". The worst response said something to the effect that I "had to be twice my ideal weight and 5 years worth of morbid obesity records!!" Has anyone actually gotten approved and know what it in fact does take through healthnet/first health...or even understand the dynamic interaction between those two organizations as it pertains to a patient?? If the later is the way healthnet is going to be I think I am going to end up haveing a real problem getting banded through insurance  Thanks for any help!

Life with the Band -- What's it Like?

Hey, Alexandra. After having my second fill only 3 days ago, I am now finally experiencing what good restriction is. And you have some good tips to think about/follow. IAMOMX6, I am right with you on the shrimp dinner experience....can't eat it all! But as far as physically - what is life with the band like? Fine, no problems... it's the emotional/mental part that's got me. For example: A week ago, I would have told you I was a failure; I've only lost 19 pounds since July 24 and that's with one fill in October. I beat my self up miserably. I finally talked it over with a friend who actually got me out of the depression. Then I got my second fill 3 days ago. Right now I am a little upset with the fact that I can't eat as much as I used to. For some reason this really bothers me, I guess because I am finally accepting/realizing that I am mentally/emotionally dependent on food more than I should be. I mean, for 30 years I used food as a drug, so it's a little hard to break. I do feel good about the fact that weight loss is the end result so it lifts my spirits. I must have hope that I will get to 200 pounds one day. Maybe not in 6 months, maybe not in a year, but one day I will. Don't know if that's what you were looking for, Alexandra, but that is how I feel. Thanks for caring!
  7. I'm that way right now... just recently joined the site and am having the surgery soon... But i can't bring myself to put the number up there... I even went as far as to change my "nickname" on here just in case my nosy friends google my usual ID because I didn't want them to see all this personal stuff about me. This forum is public so it wouldn't be hard to find someone's private info... and my weight and lapband surgery is very personal to me and most people, i'm sure! BUT -- I figure once i've had the surgery and see some success, I'll post it then because it'll be a number i'll never have to face again. The people on this site are so supportive. This truly has been a blessing for me to find because i don't know a single person in my personal life who has had the surgery... So this is a place i can ask questions, vent, and learn without feeling embarrassed or ashamed. We are all here for the same purpose... It's nice!

    Weight Loss questions

I had the lapband in 2008 when I was 380 pounds at my consultation. I was able to get down to 280 but had many complications and gained all my weight back and had to get it removed in 2012. I continued in a downward (or upward I should say) Spiral with my health and weight. I rapidly gained weight and in October of 2015 I decided I needed to make a change and fast when I was put in the hospital for breathing problems and they almost wouldn't do a catscan because I was over the weight limit when I told them I was 480 pounds (which is what I thought I was). I was so overweight doctors were having trouble treating me. I ended up having to go on oxygen 24/7 because I was so overweight it was pressing against my lungs and restricting my breathing. I called and made an appointment at the bariatric surgeon the day I got out of the hospital. When I went for the consultation it turns out I actually weighed 540 pounds. I went through 6 months of preop diet and was able to lose 60 pounds. The day of surgery on May 29, 2016 I weighed 480 pounds. Today, March 16, 2017, I weight 303.8 pounds. I got my life back. Before I could hardly walk the length of a room and now I walk 2 miles almost every day. I had a lot of complications after surgery but I would do this surgery again in a heartbeat even with all I went through. I had the sleeve surgery because I did not want the malabsorbtion or dumping syndrome. Good luck to you and if you have any other questions you can ask!

No weight loss 5 days posts op

You are not doing anything wrong, it's completely normal! They pumped your abdomen full of gas for the surgery and you most likely had an IV. It will take a little time for that to go away. And depending on your weight lost prior to surgery, your body could be holding onto all calories. Be patient, the scale will move! Best of luck to you!
  10. Just had to share something funny. The great news is that I've lost 60 lbs of the 200 lbs I need to lose. The BAD news is that 30 of it seems to have been lost from my boobs! What the heck is that? I have a large butt, large belly, and thighs that have their own zip codes, but NOOOOO. I lose half of my boobs. Seriously, I can now put my fist in my bra with plenty of room left over. Cracks me up! Guess I may have to have implants when I'm all done. I invite you to share something funny about your weight loss that you never thought was going to happen. Happy Halloween Everyone! 11. Actually how you sound to me is conflicted. If it was cut and dried, if you were sure, you'd be gone. I think maybe YOU need some counseling. First, although I know people can find true love any where at any age etc, you were VERY young when you married. Secondly, losing a lot of weight is life changing. Very likely you are different, he is not. Some therapy to help you see what you want, why, how, etc can only be a good thing. You may find out that what he "has", his attributes, are what you want. You may find out you are not the same woman you were, and that love has changed or gone. But it is only prudent after that many years to give yourself some time and room to think it over and decide. I am NOT a believer in staying together because you "should". But because in your post you sound like you aren't sure what you want, give yourself time to figure it out. There are no guarantees in this old world and you may stay and hate it, or you may go and hate it (or vice versa for both) but a good therapist can help you discover and understand the new "you"; and that new "you" can help you figure out what you want.
  12. Congrats on your weight loss btw.. I don't know you or your hubby... but from what i read. it seems you have had a realization that your not happy. I have been in a similiar situation. I was with my boyfriend for 8 yrs. (since i was 14) I literally woke up one day and said. this is the day. i slowly broke it off with him. he was a very sensitive man.. so it was hard for me being that i am a very compassionate person. I even had the same feelings of maybe he would meet someone.. or tell me he was gay .. anything!! I didn't hate him for anything.. i just realized I live once.. and other than wanting something more.. i felt like i was leading him on. I had to make the decision for the both of us because if i left it to him, we would be together still.. i went through months of sadness because i had a hard time dealing with the fact i hurt someone.. but... it was the best decision i made. i gave him sooooooo long to get over our breakup. i remained friends.. i talked to him when he had a bad day.. i helped him with relationship advise. NOTHING worked. I moved on. he became an alcoholic. and you know what.. i really don't care anymore. it's been 6 yrs since the breakup and i haven't talked to him in maybe 3 / 4 yrs or so. i am happily married with my soul mate.. and we have a beautiful daughter.. I can't advise you do anything but follow your heart. stay strong, think it over twice, and if you really feel you need to move on.. go for it! best of luck.. i'm sure you will make the best decision..
  13. I had a lot of body and face work done last month in Mexico by Dr. Sauceda. He specialized in massive weight loss and has great rates. I was there, under his care for two weeks all inclusive. He has a group over on ObesityHelp dot com. There are a lot of us over there that recently had surgery. He will be in las Vegas in June doing consultations.

    What to do?

Yes, I was able to eat anything and everything after going on solid foods before my first fill at 4 weeks. I think I gained several pounds back that I'd lost on the liquid and mush stages. But after having my first fill (1.2cc) the skids have been put on my eating!! I have to eat very little, take very, very small bites, and chew, chew, chew, or it comes right back up. So, my advice is to enjoy eating right now, try not to overeat, and when you get a fill you'll be right back on track. I had no idea it would be so hard to eat regular food, but each day it gets a little easier. Good luck to you and hang in there!!

    Exercise Routine Post-Op

At about five weeks post-op I started going to a fitness club to lift weights and I haven't looked back since. I lift three days a week. My goal right away was to build muscle volume to give my skin something to hang on to as I lose fat, so I started lifting heavy right away (I had no surgical complications and I healed very well). I do cardio too, but weights are the priority. My body fat is way down, and I'm also about a size smaller than I was the last time I was at this weight, which makes sense since muscle is heavier than fat. I feel great! Definitely don't skimp on the weight training!
  16. One month out and down over 20 lbs. is really good! Take it one day at a time. You hear it all the time, the weight didn't get there in one day and won't go away overnight. Keep up the good work!!
  17. Way to go!! My surgery was the same day. Keep up the amazing progress. I'll bet as you continue to lose your BP will go down, down, down, like your weight.

    Stalled at Week 3

Hey there, did you get to speak with the NUT or Dietitian? Maybe you need to keep track of the calorie intake making sure your putting in enough or vice averse. Find out how many calories you should be on. Sometimes its just your body holding on to the weight, it will start to come off when it realizes this is life now and let go, LOL be patient. Be sure to follow up with the NUT, also maybe your losing inches now that too sometimes comes off first.

    wht should i do?????????

You are right! Just do it, one day at a time. Measure, weight, whatever you need. Speak to your Surgeon, maybe you need a fill. But all in all, you HAVE lost weight. EVERYONE is different and they loose at different rates. The weather turned cold and I had put off my walks. Now my butt sags down to my knees. So what do I need to do, JUST DO IT. Today, maybe I will by legwarmers to keep my knees warm and I am going to go out! Thank you for KICKING MY BUTT TOO!!!!!
  21. Thank you for all the posts. I have been doing more research on both types of surgeries pretty much all day today. I'm still completely torn and still don't know which surgery I will get. All along I have wanted the RNY because I thought it was a better choice for me personally (I think I might need the dumping syndrome to keep me in line), but what if I fall into the group of folks that the weight loss does not help the pain and/or swelling in joints and lower back? What if I suffer some other injury that causes me pain and Tylenol doesn't work? I will be talking with the doctor as soon as I can for some medical advice, but I wanted to say thanks to you for answering my post!

    Finally told them...

I have an aunt who thinks I'm taking the easy way out too. He mother was an alcoholic, who beat her addiction after 30 years, and she thinks that being overweight is the same as being an addict. I love her to death, but she just doesn't understand weight issues, because she watches everything she eats and works out. It's a part of her life and always has been. I am huge because I eat the wrong things, and I eat too much of everything. I know what I'm doing, but I don't have the control to do this on my own, and I don't understand how the choices I make that lead me to be fat have a negative impact on others. I told my aunt that the band is a tool that I am using to help me lose weight and that I owed it to myself to try it, but she insists that I should do it my own. I asked her why anyone would buy a cordless drill, when a screwdriver got the job done just fine, and she didn't quite know how to answer that one. She wants me to get into a 12 step program to deal with my weight, and she is "praying" that I can have the band removed some day and keep the weight off. She told me all I had to do was to avoid "all bad food" for the rest of my life. I get so frustrated with our society, because we help and treat all other addictions as a disease, at the same time we legally discriminate and ridicule those of us with weight problems. I hope I'm not coming across as unsympathetic to those with addictions, I don't intend to. We can and should help everyone to the full extent of our ability. I'm just wanting to understand why enjoying food and being overweight should be considered some kind of personality flaw, that deserves to be ridiculed instead of getting the same kinds of treatment options as those available to addicts of any kind.
  23. Hello all! I have a question. I was told that having a lower BMI=34 you will lose weight slower than someone with a BMI of 45? Is true and what has been your experience?:scared2:

    April 2014 Due Date

Wow! very similar here!. I am 11 months post op, down 123 pounds and am 6w4d preggers due 4/18/14. I had gotten to 127 down, but weight started to creep up a little, but has been holding steady at 123 down for about 3 weeks, just after finding out. I have a 4 year old daughter. My surgeon said to wait to get pregnant until 9-12 months post op, and we weren't trying, but it happened. We are excited, it's just a little earlier than planned. I have had no morning sickness and I'm hoping that's because of the surgery, but it might be too soon. I hope I don't end up with it. I had miserable morning sickness the first pregnancy, all day every day and was hospitalized twice for hyperemesis. Saw my OB yesterday and got the first sono. He said all looks good. Hope it stays that way. He said make sure to take the vitamins and stay hydrated. I'm also grazing constantly to make sure I get nutrients. Hoping the weight comes off easily after....

    Surgery 4/13/07 any advice?

I think at some point we have all had the "what have I done" thought but it is by far the best decision I have ever made for myself. The weight loss is slow for me, but I can tell you that I don't think about food like I used to and I feel ten thousand times better than I did pre-surgery. I am 48 lbs lighter and for the first time in years, I am actually looking forward to getting out my summer clothes from last year and not worrying about not being able to fit in them! Good luck .....the first week will be hard but you will get thru it.
