    I'm kicking myself right now!!

Thank you all for your encouraging words of wisdom. LOL...I guess I should have explained better... 1. I am an honorary member of the chocolate Lover's Association...in other words, I am a chocoholic. 2. Chocolate, sweets, etc. are the things I binged on for years, causing the weight gain, leading to the Lap Band, etc. 3. I've had 3 fills and I'm still losing very slowly (banded June 24) Also, the way I just mindlessly reached for the candy bar, like a zombie and had it eaten before I realized what I was doing, scares me crazy and I can't explain why. It's like...what is it going to take to get me to lay off that junk once and for all? However, you are right, I should not beat myself up over one candy bar. It's just now I want to go home and eat a whole bag. But I won't...I won't...I won't...

Hi losefor life, I can relate to your physical condition. My BMI was only 32 when I was banded, but I had a lot of the other conditions. I had high blood pressure, high blood choloestrol and type 2 diabetes. I got immediate insurance approval (BCBS). The proceedure was a breeze but the waiting for it was long and the waiting afterward for the fills to kick in was tough. I was banded June 23 and I didn't lose any weight until just this last month (6 lbs). When you don't have a lot to lose like you it takes longer and LOTS of patience. I think it is good for your family because it aleviates you and them of the constant worry that something bad could happen to you. This is something that you can control when it seemed for so long that you couldn't control the weight gain no matter how hard you tried. I am not sorry at all that I did this. Good luck to you!!!
  3. I had my surgery consult today and nutrition. The nurse mentioned the weight gain that some have. I think that is why we should hide the scale and not think success is only in the lbs lost. You've taken giant strides so give your body a chance to settle. Cheers for you!!
  4. i was banded on the 15th and when i came home tuesday evening and weighed myself, I was 7 pounds more heavy than i was the day of surgery. Today which is two days after surgery, im still the same. Did anyone else go through this as well and know what it is caused by??

    Accountability

Shiny/skinny...Don't be too hard on yourself about the weight gain - our bodies fluctuate alot. It averages out over time...at least, this is the rationale I have decided to believe it! Hope your husband hears soon about the position...ideally he hears because he is successful. Keep us posted.
  6. You know, that is probably what caused my mom to have a hysterectomy in her late 20s early 30s. She had most of the same symptoms that I have now. I have to admit that, at times, I wish they would let me have a hysterctomy. I am so tired of the extra hair on my face and the acne. I don't have thyroid problems at this point. My PCP thought that might be part of my problem when I first started having my PCOS symptoms. She finally just said metabolic syndrome for my weight gain and insulin resistance. She put me on the metformin about 3 years ago. My GYN finally diagnosed the PCOS this year.

    Slippage.. a personal failure?

You can't change the past, but you can affect the future. Consider it a lesson learned, and get on with your life. If we were all perfect we wouldn't need the band in the first place. If it's a small slippage you may be fine after an unfill. Increase your exercise a bit and you may not have any weight gain at all. I know I'm not answering your specific questions, but just wanted to say stop beating yourself up over what is in the past.
  8. It's a valid question. I posted man of my reasons in my introductory post in the other forum. I have had many friends and family members who have taken advantage of weight loss surgery...both lap-band and bypass. Through my experience with them and a work project I was exposed to a great deal of research on the subject. I also love reading about the success stories of people who have lost weight and changed their lives. We live in a society where many people are consumed by weight...and while we can debate the validity of that all night long, it is what it is. In my experience, few achievements improve self-esteem and make people happier than losing weight and becoming healthier and more comfortable with their appearance. I decided to sign up to read such stories, offer my congratulations, and share whatever knowledge I could from the research I conducted. If nothing else, it helps me to justify all the time I spent reading and writing about the subject! And I have battled slight weight issues and have a family history of heart disease and a propensity for above average weight gain during middle age. So during the course of my experience with weight loss surgery, it is something I have kept in the back of my mind perhaps even as a preventative measure (and is some trending towards lower-BMI individuals using the surgery as a preventative therapy) considering how successful today's techniques have proven to be. Hopefully I can effectively manage my weight as I age and it will not be an issue. Either way, lapbandtalk.com seems like a great place to read uplifting stories and help pass along support to be who have made a wise and brave decision. :tt1:

    July Butterflies Master Thread

You're so right that a loss is so much better than the gradual, yet intermittent weight gains any day! Curves is good because there is no spandex or girls "trying too hard" and you can get done with your workout in a reasonable amount of time. At the one I go to, the music is more oldies so I'm looking forward to graduating to a gym that has a little more up-to-date music. It is especially good to go during the slow times at Curves so that you have access to all the equipment; for me that is mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Ladies here seem to flock in after dropping off kids for school or before they head home after work so if your job or hours are flexible enough, I'd suggest off prime time.
  10. I know how you feel Yettia. I've also had 2 fills and feel no restriction. I have had to control my amount of eating on my own. According to my nutritionist I should be full after 1/2 cup to 1 cup of food. I can and do eat 2 cups with ease. Aside from my initial issues with weight gain I have steadily been losing. Have you found you are losing weight anyway?
  11. I just had a fill yesterday bringing me to 9 cc's in the 10 cc Inamed Band. I have gotten fills, gotten restriction, lost restriction, lost weight. gained weight. At the times that i did have good restriction, I would stay satisfied for at least 5 hours. I think my major problem with restriction is that my doctor follow a schedule for fills that in my opinion is too far apart. I would get a fill and for like 3 weeks would be great then lose my restriction (completely at times) and begin to gain the 10 lbs or so that I lost. Yesterday. Dr Fill  says that he thinks that this one may be the one. Before this, at 8 cc's I was able to eat an entire "diner" wrap. I was getting full quicker then pre band but not enough to lose weight.

    Iud

Hi there, I do not want to be a naysayer, but I am against IUD's after my daughter's experience with the Mirena IUD. She had severe abdominal pain, weight gain, depression, anxiety, etc. She had always been a very petite, happy-go-lucky, optimistic and carefree person until the Mirena. On top of that they recently found out it had perferated her uterine wall and it had become infected. Again, I do not want to be negative, and everyone reacts differently to different drugs, etc. but I urge you to do some thorough research before considering it. Good luck!

    Question???? TSH

TSH is to measure your thyroid hormone levels. A high TSH means you are hypothyroid (your body needs more thyroid hormone). If your TSH is too low, you are hyperthyroid. Hypothyroidism is easily corrected through syntroid medicince. Sypmtoms can include fatigue, weight gain, depression, sensitivity to cold, dry skin. Though there is a range of acceptable TSH levels, I find that when mine are closer to 1-2 I feel better.

    Not successful in weight loss

marivan. I also do the dance. On Saturday I was 225.4 and today I am 230 but I know on Saturday, I will be around 228. I seem to show a real low weight, the body responds by retaining water then it dumps it to another low and the cycle continues. I no longer get depressed because I record all weighins. I tried weighing only when I went to my doctors but I got depressed as he told me I gained then I lost. So by keeping track, I can see for myself how my body loses weight. One thing I do know, at the end of the month I am always a bit less. Keep on smiling because when you show weight gains I bet a bottom dollar that is an indication you have lost weight. LOL In time the loss will show up.
  15. (Hi Mary: We are the same age and I always like to check in with woman our age because I think it's a challenge with menopausal weight gain that comes with this time. How are you doing? Are you winning the battle? Glad your palpitations went away. I started getting them a year ago and was very scared as I lost a sister to a heart attack. It turns out my palpitations are yet another symptom of fluctuating hormones. I am pre banded but have are almost there just battling with my insurance company but still have so many questions.) I am doing well. I had my surgery on August 19th and since then have lost 20 pounds. I would like to lose 50 more. I was on one week of Clear liquids then 3 weeks of full liquids and next Wednesday I make the transition to real food. I have an appt for a tentative first fill on 9/30. Except for the bruising and soreness at the incision sites, I have not had any other trouble. I also lost a sister at a young age..8 years ago this month - she was 40 and I was 41. She was in a car accident. Good luck battling that insurance company....I see you being persistant with the appeals. Hang in there. Mary

    lapband not working

Jodi, I don't think anyone is "siding against Tom". We have all been where Tom is (as far as gaining weight goes). I think that Tom's Dr. should definitely give him another fill if he wants one ... but looking at it from the physician's perspective, maybe she doesn't want him to hurt himself by overeating or eating too fast (because - let's face it - it HURTS). If Tom is having pb's after eating bread, then his band probably *is* working. I'm at 6cc's in a 14cc band right now, and I feel *a little* restriction, especially in the mornings. BUT I'm losing 2+ pounds per week, because I watch my caloric intake, and I journal every bit of food that goes into my mouth. I'm not eating enough to *gain* weight. There must be a couple of things happening in Tom's case - one, his band is not working (yet), and two, he's eating enough to *gain*. If Tom had maintained his initial weight loss, his Dr. would likely be far more willing to give him as many fills as he desired. I do know that my surgeon will not give fills to people who have gained weight, and I think that makes sense (outside of any major health issues that might cause weight gain, such as taking certain medications). I'm on Tom's side, and I want him to do what's best for him, which is to lose weight. Sometimes thinking realistically is the best way to think, instead of placing blame in one place, which could possibly be ill-founded belief. If we all blamed lack of weight loss on our bands, we would probably have not lost any weight at all. Most of the weight loss is up to each of us, not just the band. That's really all I'm saying, not trying to be for or against anyone. Best, Sarah H.
  17. i read that thread as well - but this one is more relatable, as i'm living the changes - not wishing for them.....both are great inspirations! * i like feeling the air between my legs when i walk. no more rubbing together * i love that my activity level is off the hook. i work out often, run & it does not feel like a chore... * love the fact i'll look better in my 40's than i did in my 30's * in changing my diet; i pay attention a whole lot more as to what i put in my mouth. i read labels, shop for fresh food, & all around make healthier choices regarding food. that too is not a chore. * clothes just look a lot better when you purchase them to "fit" - not hide. * getting my social groove back. sorta went into seclusion after the weight gain & now i can't wait to get out & about these days. * hubby is a FT gropper. everday he tells me how "great i look" - the smile is back & i am more confident and it shows.... could keep going...the band has just been a positive thing for me!!

    Toe dipper

i probably would have gotten the sleeve if i had to do it over again. i'm in no way upset with the results, no complications to date, however being realistic - i'm not sure this band will last me a lifetime. just a gut instinct & that's a concern - as is the weight gain. i "think" i've learned what it takes to be successful, should i happen to lose my band - but ultimately would be devistated if the weight came back. i've read a lot about the sleeve "after the fact", and that and the lapband would be the only WLS i would consider. good luck to you.!.
  20. Hi there! How are you doing? I went to the doc today, and unfortunately had a weight gain :-( But after discussing everything that has been going on, he concluded I was over-filled. So he took some fluid out. He is hoping this jumpstarts my weight loss again.

As for the smoking, I have fallen off the wagon a couple of times, but I just get right back on. How are you doing with your quitting?

Hope all is well!! Take care, and hope to talk to you soon :-)

  21. I'm starting to have a BIG problem. I had my gallbladder taken out about 6 weeks ago and every since then my whole appetite has changed for the worse. Slowly my weight has started to increase, I gained 5 lbs in the past few weeks. I can eat twice the portion of food and I'm hungry 1 hour after my meals and in between my meals. I was never like that before I had my gallbladder taken out. Before I would eat 3 meals a day and not be hungry and it would be losing 2 lbs a week. Now i'm gaining like 1/2 lbs a day. Honestly, lately for the past two weeks, I've been struggle with eatting hungry and not drinking liquids as I was before. I'm just hungry all the time and not thristy. I haven't really been making the right food choice lately either. I did join a gym 2 weeks ago and I go 2-3 times a week. Does anyone know someone who has Lap Band and had their gallbladder taken out? did they go through this side effect like I am. I can't get another fill because my insurance won't pay for them anymore. I'm 11 months out from having my surgery (surgery date 10/23/07) and I've had 5 fills so far. I'm a 8.5 cc out of 10 cc. The restriction is not there anymore.
  22. Hey!!! I was taking Lexapro for anxiety. It didn't go well with me, and it made me depressed. After I put on the weight I was sure enough depressed. Major weight gain is normally not a significant side effect of Lexapro. They think I may have thyroid problems, too, which can make meds act crazy! I am no longer on Lexapro. I am taking Wellbutrin, and it had been okay. How are you?

  23. Hello to everyone out there! My name is Tina and I just got home from surgery. My doctor was Dr. Jawad out of Ocala, Florida. Not sure what to post about me, but here goes. I have been trying to loose weight forever. Diets didn't cut it. I had spinal fusion last year, which was a long recovery which meant little to no exercise which meant more weight gain. My husband is active duty Air Force, and I bill insurance for our local hospital here in Valdosta, Georgia. I didn't think Tricare would pay for the Lap-band, just the bypass. My family doctor had said she would have no problem getting me approved for the bypass, but for me, there were just too many things that could potentially go wrong. When I found out Tricare was covering the band, I about jumped for joy. I was shocked that Tricare approved me for the surgery so quickly. I am about 110 pounds over my ideal. Most people didn't believe me when I told them what I weighed (255). Everyone called me a liar . I have never been a skinny girl. When I got married I was 170 and a size 10. I would LOVE to be that size again. I really wanted the surgery for health reasons. Less weight = less strain on my back, which means I can hopefully postpone another fusion for decades. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid issues, and my mom was recently diagnosed with type II, which is something I did not ever want. I feel okay, just really bloated.... My husband and family have been really supportive in my decision. I look forward to talking to everyone and getting to know you. There is a local support group locally, but somehow, the fact that there is someone else out there online at 2am if I need to talk makes this more appealing.:scared2:
  24. I also got pregnant 8 month into my journey and I was very upset more because I was being selfish about the weight gain but things worked out after wards, I only gained 23 pounds which I lost 2 weeks after delivery plus more. It did take me about a year to re-evaluate myself and get back into it but that the great thing about the band you can continue where you left off with the proper adjustment. Enjoy it and worry about it later, thats the mistake I made I was upset the whole time that afterwards I felt really guilty about not wanting to be pregnant. Good luck.
  25. Hi everyone. I have never posted here, didn't have the need until now. While only an HPT has confirmed it,I do believe I am pregnant. I am in shock. I do not know why since Dh and I did not do the right things by b/c last month, but I was under the mistaken impression that since I had fertility issues in the past my 44lbs weight loss would not be that significant. Well, I ws wrong. I am terrified! Terrified of telling my dr since he was adament about waiting for two years. Terrified that I will have to stop jogging which gives me pleasure or that I will be too tired to do it. I am horrified that I am concerned with the weight gain I may experience because for the first time in a long time I like the way I look. We were planning on starting in the beginning of the year but now, I guess not so much. I don't want anyone to think that I am not happy about this. I am ( I think) but right now I am just in shock. I haven't even told my husband yet, although I told him I really thought I was pregnant two days ago and he laughed and said I wasn't and to stop spazzing since I am so irregular. I guess I need for someone to tell me the obvious. I am a grown up and my doctor won't holler at me ( too much) and that I am not really going to gain 70lbs (only gained 18 with our son pre-band--he is now 18 months) and that really, worse things have happened. Thank you all for letting me vent. Mikki
