    Weight loss stalls

I am 6 months post op down 68 lbs. I think what helps is the following- #1-Only weigh once a wk, #2-Eat healthy and drink water #3-Add in a little exercise (even just a 15-30 min walk every other day to start helps). #4-Be happy when you have had a big loss, but just understand you may not have a big loss the next week. #5-Set realistic goals, don't expect to drop 20 lbs every month, it starts off that high and then starts dailing back a bit so just be patient with yourself, play the long game. #6-change habits and recognize stress or emotional eating. #7-Keep a great attitude with how you are doing. Be kind to yourself through the process. It is hard to do!!

    One Week from today!

All the best to you! Congratulations...Kim and I have one week also! We are all blessed to be able to take this journey!
  3. Just had all of my information sent to the insurance company. I have blue cross blue shield. My health advocate there said we should know within a week or two. Wow this is about to get real. ... getting nervous
  4. Hi all. I am two weeks post-op. I feel great in the morning - no problems whatsoever - can barely tell I've had surgery. Incisions look good. Around 2 or 3 pm every afternoon I start to get pain in the rib area on both sides. Almost feels like sore muscles rather than tummy pain. If I take pain meds, it goes away. It happens like clockwork every afternoon. Mild but annoying! Anybody else have this? Thanks.

    Cant eat?

I'm 7 weeks out and I still have a protein shake every morning that way I know that I'm getting in at least that much protein. I have no desire to eat still so I force myself with cottage cheese and yogurt and the only meat I can really tolerate is chicken so I've been trying to be creative with that! I would definitely agree with taking time to eat, little bites at a time. My nutritionist said that it may be a while before the stomach tolerates certain things but if you try them 3 times (at least waiting a week) and have a bad reaction, more than likely you should stay away from that food. Good luck!

    Cant eat?

Im 6 weeks post op.. on soft foods. Dr. Says to be eating 3 small meals a day and 60-80 gr of protien a day.. i am forcing myself to eat once a day! No way can i get 3 meals in. I am never hungry, and when i make myself eat I feel blah. .. like god why am i eating this? Is it normal to not want to eat?
  7. I am supposed to go Thursday for my final weigh-in and my nut class. I was supposed to have lost 10 lbs. by then and I have not.. I have only lost 6 lbs. and am so scared they are going to postpone my July 19th surgery. I know when I start the 2 week pre-op liquid diet that I will lose the rest but I am afraid they will post pone because I have not lost the 10.
  8. Hi all So its been almost 6 weeks since i was banded, I was lucky i didnt experience any pain and was back at work the next week. I was weighed for the first time on the 2nd October and in 6 weeks (2 weeks on optifast) and 4 weeks after the op i have lost a total of 22 kilos. I'm getting my first fill next week (22nd Oct) which cant come any sooner as i now seem to be hungry all the time, instead of eating i have a glass of water.
  9. Hi Bec, I am Linda from queensland. Pleased to meet you. I am still waiting for my health cover to kick in on 8th october :biggrin:for my band, I am getting excited too but these last few weeks are dragging. I guess we will see you back here when your a new Bandit!!! Linda:thumbup:
  10. What is up with me? I am stuffing face like there is no next week (T-minus 6 and counting). Why am I trying to destroy myself here? If I have no will power now, what about after the sleeve? Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately in my case) I was not required a pre-op diet. Not to sound too dramatic but I am disgusted with my behavior. I try to rationalize by saying "this is my final hurray", or "this is my last supper". Today, I went to lunch, a buffet, with an old friend that I don't expect to be around much longer. He has in fact had surgery from past injuries in an airplane crash that removed more than half his stomach giving him a virtual sleeve gastrectomy. He is wilting away, and I wanted to see him before my surgery. But, I digress, is it normal to do that to yourself pre-surgical? Did any of you go out in a moment of weakness and stuff face knowing what you were about to face? Thanks Jerry

    On my way!

Woo hoo, My surgeon's office has submitted everything to BC/BS, and now I have about a week of waiting to find out if I am approved . I know the office does not see me having any problems with approval, but it is still nerve racking.:paranoid On a fun note, I went out this week and got some comfy jammie-type pants and tanks for post-op. My brother works at Old Navy which now carries what I affectionately call "Fat girl sizes" and I got a 25% discount off some stuff. I am so hoping all goes well with insurance and I will have my band by the end of September! I am going to start a partial liquid diet next week to get myself ready for 4 weeks of liquids only. :phanvan
  12. I was discharged before lunch on the day of surgery, slept for about 3 hours at my daughters house, woke up refreshed. Stomach hurt some, but not too bad. Had some pretty serious indigestion, but that went away in about 2 hours. Then made a 4 hour road trip home. The next day I felt much better!!!! I had surgery on Friday, and went back to work on Monday. Was real tired, but the pain had all but went away. After one week, I felt like a million bucks. I am not quite 3 weeks out and the dr. has returned my back to all normal activities. I even mowed with my tractor last week. Don't be afraid. Make sure you have something for gas BEFORE you get it!!!! Walk as much as you can, and you will be fine.

    Final Food Goodbyes

I was dieting so I didn't really do that but I am on my preop for a week more (1 week down) and I want the food everyone else is eating.... Oh we'll... I am trying to lose what my surgeon wanted to if I had eaten some f the food I might have set myself back. *sighs*

    Stall already?

"only" 9 lbs in two weeks? Your expectations are very very high! Yes, it is completely normal to stop and start your weight loss, at any time, but particularly in the first several weeks after surgery, when your body is focused on healing after major trauma, not on obeying whatever mechanical weight loss expectations we all have When you say "soft solid protein only" does that mean you are not allowed protein shakes? I was able to get my full 75 grams of protein every day starting within 24 hours of surgery, but would never have been able to do it without protein shakes. Frankly I doubt it is realistic to expect anyone to get in their full complement of protein without shakes so soon after surgery, unless maybe if you are just constantly eating -- which to me does not seem like a healthy habit to build up.
  15. Hello! I'm Janice aka Grandma Jan. I started my journey on June 30th and have been plugging through all the requirements of my program. I am so thankful to have found the team at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield IL. I was cleared last week by the psychologist, have 1 more visit with the nurse practitioner and have started my nutrition and physical therapy. Looking to be done with those by the middle to end of October. I'm excited, nervous and anything else I can think of. I will be 55 on Saturday and this is the best thing I can do for me! I have 7 grandkids and I want to be there for them and be able to attend all their sporting events and take them places without being unable to walk or get short of breath. I am happy to have found these forums. Even though we are all different it's awesome to be able to listen to everyone's stories both pre and post op. [sharedmedia=trackers:tickers:25125]
  16. We will all tend to see the most rapid weight loss at the beginning, no matter what our diet may be (assuming that it does have the requisite caloric deficit to trigger weight loss!) When we first go into a caloric deficit, as when we start a weight loss program, or get into a famine, that deficit is made up with our quick energy reserves of glycogen (basically carbs) which burn fairly rapidly at a rate of about 2000 calories per pound. When our body gets the idea that you are into something serious and the caloric deficit is not going away anytime soon, then it starts tapping into its long term energy stores of fat, which burns more slowly at about 3500 calories per pound. It typically takes 2-3 weeks to get to this point, which often coincides with a change in diet phase in post op WLS programs. This is also when many people experience their first stall - the dreaded third week stall - when the body has to take a rest and rebuild its glycogen reserves to more normal levels, which involves some hoarding of Water to keep it in solution. I was on mushies and soft Proteins from the outset, and also experienced my most rapid loss those first three weeks after which is slowed down as my body moved into fat burning mode. So, it really doesn't matter if one is on clear liquids, thick liquids, mushes or steak and potatoes those first couple of weeks, you will lose quickly assuming that the caloric deficit is there. On the original question, I typically ran in the 90-110 g Protein range (appropriate for the metabolism of a guy with relatively high lean body mass,) carbs were in the 80-120g range (workable and at times essential for a relatively high activity level,) simple carbs & sugars were minimized, though some fruits, berries mostly, worked their way in over time, and calories averaged around 1100 during my loss phase. The 50g protein level quoted by the OP is on the low side of typical recommendations (normally in the 60-80g range) but is in the ballpark if the OP is a relatively short and small framed woman (say, 120lb or less of "should be" or ideal weight.) Many find that 600-800 calories to be something of a sweetspot for weightloss with the sleeve, and at that level, if one is meeting the protein goals, there isn't a lot of room to go wrong on fat and carbs with the remaining calories.
  17. Found this in OH forum, hope they don't mind me sharing it here, but it is such a great explanation for why we all go through the inevitable stalls! I take great comfort in knowing this information, so that I don't blame stalls on what I am eating or not doing etc. This explanation is courtesy of Diana Cox. A "stall" at this point is inevitable, and here is why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

    Protein Bars?

Once you have clearance for raw veggies you can eat anything. With my doctor that's 6 weeks. i have some leftover protein bars from my pre-op diet and will supplement with those as snacks when I get to 6 weeks. The KetogenX bars are pretty good and Ideal Protein has a few that are pretty amazing too.
  20. Pre-op they just want you to start to prepare for your new eating and drinking styles post-op. I cut done on my pop and caffeine drinking but drank right up until surgery and haven't had any issues not having it after surgery and I am 21 weeks out...
  21. Yay congrats! I was sleeved a week ago and this is such an inspiration! You look great!

    Constipation!

I had the same problem for a couple of weeks after surgery. Was taking Miralax and stool softner for a couple of days with Milk of Mag. It finally cleared, and now what i do is take Metimucal with my shake in the morning and that seems to be working well. I also use to go every morning like clockwork. Since i work on a job sight and have port-a-johns, im glad i don't go that often!!! LOL Just go with the flow!!! No pun intended!! LOL

2 Days on the Other Side

I was lucky in that I hardly had any pain. I can relate to a day of uncomfortable constipation - after only one half dose of pain killer. Give that up if you can Celebrated two year with band a few weeks ago. Down 143lbs. No longer diabetic and no longer high blood pressure. Life is good! Hang in there!
