On the other hand, you can try sleeve, which as you say, is less invasive and has fewer malabsorption risks longterm....and see how it works. If it's not working, you can do a revision to DS. The majority of patients have very good luck with sleeve. it's a personal judgement call.

One more thing. My doctor said that since I had so much weight to lose he actually thought it would be best to do the sleeve and then do a revision so I could get to my goal weight. Of course I said no, RNY please, one surgery. Because I’m trying to get pregnant after and can’t have two surgery’s to wait four years to have kids! I’m 31

This question (perhaps its confusing to everyone) is about revisions. My question is basically is why chose the least effective surgery (individual based) only to end up getting another surgery when the outcome is unsatisfactory. (And i don't mean people who revised from lapbands that were installed forever ago, or revisions for GERD/Barretts, those are different) Why does anyone chose a lapband these days? Why choose VSG vs RNY/DS if you have A LOT to lose with a history of eating disorders, mental health concerns, lack of support, stressful lifestyle, tendency to cheat constantly, etc...? Why not be more aggressive? Some answers were good. Some left me with more questions, but I'm thankful for everyone who participated. This wasn't about divisiveness. This was a real question.

For me the sleeve appears to the the right decision. Granted I’m 4.5 months out and I’m way ahead of the avg loss numbers. I was already lactose intolerant so that wasn’t t a concern. I rarely got heartburn prior to my sleeve and think I’ve had maybe 4 flair ups (too many spicy foods). It came down to how much the malabsorption scares the crap out of me and rerouting my insides when I know I’m an ugly scarrer was enough to tip me to sleeve. Going in based on what I needed to loose the avg lbs difference between the options wasn’t significant enough to deal with malabsorption. I also have 4 friends at different points in post sleeve surgery. One is extremely successful. One is still loosing but doing really well. Another was a band to sleeve revision and is the least successful. Lastly is someone who is fighting regain 2 years out. This gave me a realistic view of what is possible and what is needed to meet goal. Can I self sabotage? Sure I could and maybe someday I might but I have different tools I didn’t have before. Will they work? Time will tell.

Sorry if this has been asked before. Little background first. I had sleeve 3 years ago and had some GERD prior to surgery. It was well controlled with medication. My surgeon did an upper GI prior to surgery to make sure it was right for me. No hernia found and no damage that was severe enough to switch to bypass. For the first two years after surgery I was on lansoprazole which was controlling the reflux somewhat. Last year, I started having trouble eating. I would have pain and feel like I had a ball sitting in my stomach. I was switched to Protonix and have been on it since. In the recent months the acid has come back. I have also had issues with getting solid foods down. My surgeons office doubled my Protonix and added carafate 4 times a day. And the reflux got worse! I was tested for an ulcer and do not have one. I now have an upper GI scheduled to see what’s going on in my stomach. My questions, who has been revised to bypass? Did it help your reflux issues? What made you and your surgeon finally settle on revision? How many different types of acid medication did you try first? Did you have issues with insurance covering it? Thank you ahead of time. 😊

Very very true But what comfort does someone who's surgery failed their expectations get if that surgery was never right for them in the first place (not by my standards, by close evaluation of all data)? Just have a revision? Thats what people are doing ...
-
Exactly my point. That seems pretty low to me! Certainly not high enough to suggest the procedure might be self sabotage/not choosing the best procedure. It was a question based on a few factors: some people honestly admitting to choosing VSG vs. RNY to specifically avoid dumping, the number of posts where people seems willing to break protocol earlier out seems to be mostly VSG patients, higher regain and revisions for non malfunction/medical reasons appears to be mostly from the VSG pool. BUT I HAVE NO PROBLEM BEING WRONG ABOUT THIS... its all observational/anecdotal.

The suggestion of self-sabotage doesn't make sense for me when considering one weight-loss surgery over another. Real self-sabotage is doing nothing, taking no steps toward reclaiming one's life via the tools of WLS. I often wonder why some people have opted into a revision (from sleeve to bypass). Did they make a mistake in choosing the sleeve in the first place? I have no regrets in selecting the bypass. None. I think I'd be upset if I'd had ended up with the sleeve, though.

I chose a sleeve because I am still in my 30s and malabsorption seemed like a really bad idea to me. Thought I would just be upping my chance for a barrage of health issues down the road. Add the fact that I have lost large amounts of weight in the past all on my own and a husband who only reluctantly supported the sleeve and was down right opposed to a bypass, and sleeve it was. Also, I don't want to be "skinny." I don't have the face for it--the thought of looking bony (for myself--not others) repulses me. Now I am one of the lucky ones that is dealing with GERD from their sleeve. Medications do very little for me and are not a long term solution. I may be forced to get a revision and it still terrifies me. I do not want my intestines messed with. but it is what it is. Should I have gone with the bypass to begin with? Maybe. I might have not had GERD but my mother has numerous GERD related issues--so I could have seen it coming. Not to mention I am only 3.5 months out and back to my creamer in my coffee ways. Plus, I did purge in my 20s. And the 100s of pounds I have lost on my own--I've gained them back, Time will tell--but to answer your question. FEAR. I was educated on the outcomes but I am afraid of a bypass.

I wanted the RNY from the beginning but was told that it was irreversible and the band was. I chose the band which was a big mistake. When I had the revision to remove the band I once again wanted the RNY. Again I was told the sleeve was effective with less complications. A year later I was suffering from bile reflux and ultimately ended up getting the RNY which I originally wanted 9 years ago.

What types of food can you enjoy down the road?
allielee replied to jjyogalove's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I am not a veteran (almost 8 months from RNY and only have 5 pounds left to a normal BMI). I can eat anything I want but with that being said the following make me feel really ill afterwards so I avoid: Any and all fried foods, ice cream (but I can eat Dark chocolate candy-think the ice cream goes down to easy and then I feel terrible ) white carbs (I can eat whole grains in very small portions). I stick to the following foods that make me feel awesome! Fish and a veg, steak and a veg, pork and a veg and eggs. I LOVE a my RNY! I had lapband previously (was a successful lapbander but my band eroded so had the revision) wish I had done the RNY first lol -
I had liquid Tylenol with codeine. I also received one shot of Demerol in my IV. I had very little surgical pain. I did however have severe back pain due to surgical positioning (and an old injury I never thought to mention)! I’m allergic to morphine. It was never an option. I got a script for one bottle of the Tylenol with codeine upon release the next day. (I used half the bottle to manage back pain the first few days I was home.). Revision from Band to sleeve.

Hey September sleevers ^^ Had a 9/2/2016 band to sleeve revision. Other than the first day, it's been a good recovery. It's a totally different feeling than the band which I had for like 8 years, so it's going to take some getting used to but no complaints so far.

Hi there - great to see this new forum has been started for us! I am into my 4th day post op and am doing well - no pain or discomfort at all, but it is sure making me think alot more about my food choices and getting Water in, esp in these early days. I am a revision and had the surgery over 9 months after having my band removed following a severe erosion. My surgeon did a brilliant job, it took 4 hours to get it all finished because there lots of tidying up to do, but he was determined to give me an excellent result, and that's what I have got. Roll on the next weeks so that I learn how to drive this thing! Cheers Marion:thumbup:

Today is surgery number............ it doesn't matter. It's a lot.
SleeveToBypass2023 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Anyway, the point is, it's surgery day and I'm trying not to get sick at the last minute and HERE WE ARE with the temperature at a high of 46 when we've been in the low to mid 80s the last 4 days!!!!! Colorado sucks. Went to the ER Wednesday night for insane abdominal pain and vomiting. 5 hours, lots of blood work, and a CT scan later, and there's no appendicitis, no intestinal blockage, no bowel blocks, and no sleeve leaks or rupture. What I DO have is a very large uterine fibroid that the doctor thinks might be causing the pain. Incidentally, I also saw from my blood work is my liver is enlarged and my kidneys and pancreas don't look to be functioning completely normally. Yay. This afternoon I have the surgery to remove the nodules from my duodenum. Wish me luck!!! Hopefully it's the last one and then I can be cleared for my revision from sleeve to bypass and then get back to living my life. In the meantime, guess I'll be looking into what can be done about the rest of this crap. So tired of there always being SOMETHING going on with my body. -
I had GERD pre-surgery. No way would I get the sleeve. GERD doesn't get worse for *everyone* who gets the sleeve, but it does for a sizable minority. There are several people on bariatric internet forums who've revised to bypass because of it. I would definitely get the bypass. I suspect this surgeon is just more familiar with the sleeve - and it's also a quicker, easier surgery, so less complicated for him. I'd be really tempted to get a second opinion. You're the one who'll have to leave with the potential GERD problem, not him.

Dr. Francisco Gonzalez and/or Oasis of Hope - Any Feedback?
NovemberSleever posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am scheduled for a revision from VSG to RNY with Dr. Francisco Gonzalez at Oasis of Hope hospital in Tijuana in October. I’d love some feedback and experiences with either the surgeon and/or hospital. Nervous but excited! Thank you! -
canadian who have gone to mexico
Donna replied to andreerichards1's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I strongly recommend Canadians get banded in Canada or only in the United States if they are very near the border and that is the closest lapband surgeon. If you have any type of complications or when you need the regular fills most doctors in Canada will not touch you because you are not their patient and due to liability issues. Frankly also why should they desire to when you deliberately chose to go to Mexico. Lapband weight loss surgery by the very nature of it necessitates strong aftercare and support and should be a high priority. Donna VBG/87 Revised To Lapband/06 By Dr. Cobourn 251/162/125 goal -
New notorious novembers weightloss spreadsheet
jms462001 replied to sistasassy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I cannot believe I can wear a size 6 (28) designer jeans. In all my life I never was under a 12 or 14. I do have a big problem however. 9 years ago I had a breast lift. It was sort of a gift to myself after my divorce and 24 yrs of marriage, 3 kids, breast feeding, and gaining, losing weight 100 times. The surgeon said if he did not put in an implant i would be flat on top. I said ok, but just wanted to fill out the bra I was wearing which was a D cup. I weighed 220 at the time at 5'9". He said I was a big person and my breasts would go well with the rest of my body (still planning on a D cup). Well, when he was done I somehow ended up a 44 DDD!!!!!!!!!!!! I am now down to a 38 DD, but needless to say I have a very difficult time buying blouses and dresses are out of the question. I have to stick with stretch knits for the most part and I feel like I look a bit like Dolly Parton now. I have no money for a revision so I am stuck with this problem. I wear a size M top, but like I said if they are not stretch I probably cannot button them. -

Hi Notorious Novembers! I'm a little late, but I did make it below 200 lbs - I am now happily in ONEDERLAND!!! :wink2: :wink2: :w00t:    Please update me on the spreadsheet - and I've revised my goal weight (after much pressure from friends and family and my doctor) to 175. Only 21 lbs to go! Keep at it, everyone - we are all doing great! -
Went back to the Doc's office yesterday and I was right. The new port which is smaller has less capacity therefore I need less fluid to get me back to the ("sweet spot") level I was previously enjoying. Removed .6cc's. The end result was adding .4cc - new level 5.4cc's brought me to the same level I was at with the old port ( 6.15 cc). Was able to eat last night. ( First time in two days).....Felt sooooooo good. Back on track and feel great. WHAT A JOURNEY !!:smile2:

I exchanged problems w/ my band removal
Daisalana replied to back-where-i-started's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wow I was reading your original post and it's making me even more depressed!! I'm self pay, had 1 revision surgery, lost over 100lbs and was so happy... got pregnant.... love my baby.. band mysteriously doesn't work anymore. Paid $400 a month ago for fluro to rule out slip & dilation. Now they think it's a leak due to no drawback immediately after fill. They want me to pay $400 next week for a contrast study... and tonight I got the deal breaker, wanting to charge me the full amount of the original surgery to fix it (15k). Not an option for me. So now, I'm exploring other options. I'm thinking about the sleeve.. I actually had chronic heartburn till I lost the 100+lbs.. it has come back after pregnancy, but nothing like it use to be, but I get it 1-2x a week (I was down to 0). -
esophageal dilation - FREAKING OUT!!!!
PrettyThick1 replied to Christalov's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Positive thoughts flowing your way. Try to believe for the best - if you have to have a revision surgery, we're going to believe now that your insurance will cover it and you'll have even better results than you did with the band. Hugs -

Just an update....the dr and I have decided that I will have the revision to the RNY. During this process, I have gained around 40 lbs, which is so discouraging. Hopefully surgery will be scheduled end of November/Early December!
