  1. The possible saving grace, is that people who want to test run the sleeve, can revise to RNY. (I understand it would be a second surgery and all that that brings.) I do think I'd follow surgeon's advise. I do believe it's smart to preop investigate the cause.

I had revision from lapband to bypass Dec 28 2015.I am so happy....Was off of Metformin 3 days post op....no Metformin since...I feel great...those horse pills 850 x 2 a day is over.
  3. I hand my band to RNY on December 28 as you know...the first 3 weeks was tough because my revision was all in one and the band had done more damage...erosion.etc...I now feel great...no acid reflux ,no pain and no port site issues,no dumping.I feel great.I am losing slowly but steadily.I am ok with all foods. No problems.I actually feel really good.I need to get in the exercise and I struggle with getting my water intake but I just feel great.Overall....all the hoops and steps to finally get this revision is proving to be definitely worth it....get it done...you will feel so much better!!!!!!
  4. Just want to get some feedback on how things are going for those that had revision from band to bypass (this is what I am going to be getting). What kind of progress are you making, how much weight have you lost since surgery? Loving it or hating it? Missing the band ? (I doubt I will ever miss mine) I keep hearing that weight loss is slower after revision vs those that had bypass first time around. When I talked to my psych about it when I had psych eval he said he does not believe this to be the case, which was pretty encouraging. I am not looking for fast weight loss but my weight loss has been always extremely slow to none, so I am nervous. Thank you for sharing

    Aetna insurance

A lot of insurances don't cover it. I switched jobs to an employer who's insurance I knew covered it. Since my surgery I have moved and along w that have switched jobs and of course insurance and I'm having issues with complications from my surgery. My new insurance has an exclusion in the policy however the exclusion does not excluded complications from weight loss surgery therefore I'm going to be able to have my revision.

I had band to sleeve revision Tues, Mar 1st. I've felt pretty good too, just some minor discomfort. In just 4 days, I'm down 7 pounds, and finally had the elusive BM after taking 3 tbl of milk of magnesia last night. Good luck!
  8. I had my lap band placed in 2008 and did really well, with it, until last November. I ended up in the er unable to keep anything down and waking up choking with reflux. Band was unfilled and, turns out, has slipped. I got my insurance approval, for revision, on Thursday and will be getting my surgery date on Monday! I'm so excited and scared! What advice can you guys give me???

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

So the sleeve was "invented" for super high bmi patients as a precursor to having the bypass..... kind of like a "step 1" if you will. The pouch with bypass is smaller I believe (I may be wrong) but they still removed the same portion of your stomach that contributes to the "hunger" hormone named Ghrelin. But don't let this he a deciding factor. This is where a large portion of the hormone is currently made, but it is not the ONLY place it is made. You're hunger will eventually return. But going with the sleeve doesn't mean you can't get a bypass revision done later on, like I said the sleeve was originally performed on super high bmi patients as a first step. This was done to get their weight down enough to lower the risks of doing a bypass procedure. The lower your weight at surgery the less your risk of complications. So to spur weightloss to be able to more safely perform a bypass, doctors started doing the sleeve first then revising later on. The biggest thing to help decide this is.....Do you want to deal with the malnutrition issues that can plague bypass patients? How high is your bmi? Are you willing do deal with dumping syndrome? I should note that not all gastric by pass patients dump, and some sleevers do. It's kind of a toss up. Are you willing to take the higher risk of the bypass? Bypass means being under for longer and is a longer procedure, can your health risk it? This and many more are things you want to consider. Do your research and have a real "come to jesus" talk with yourself and be honest with what you are willing to handle. Both are good options..... but they are both permanent.
  10. I was banded in 2008, and had it removed in 2011. I was working all the time, family business and never paid attention to how I felt. When I moved to Texas and went for a test to have it removed, because it just wasn't working out for me ... they had discovered that my stomach prolapsed above my band. I had it removed by one Dr here in Texas and decided to wait awhile before I made any other decisions. 2011 - Feb 1st 2016, I was gaining weight, dieting, re-gaining and was at the end of my rope. Plus I'd only lost 45 pounds. But now I know why, just not sure when it prolapsed. All I did was find another Dr here with good reviews and they took care of everything. I am not a veteran of the gastric sleeve yet, so I can not tell you anything more experienced people can about it. I am only 5 weeks out soon, and still have highs and lows and sometimes an emotional wreck. Perhaps just look around your area for Bariatric Surgeons who are very experienced in revisions from band to sleeve.

Congrats! I am schedueld for conversion / revision in 11 days! counting down each moment...
  12. I can relate to your journey. I had my band in 2005 and a revision in 2009. I also have a dilated pouch and esophogus inflamation. I am scheduled for a revision to the gastric sleeve in 11 days! I am so excited. My band has been opened and refilled an now completly opened after my pre surgical Endoscopy which showed all the damage. I have gained 20 pounds in 4 months and it is killing me. I sustained 100 lb weight loss all these years and instantly - BAM I am gaining! I am very encouraged by the posts and reviews I see from people who have converted. Seems like a second chance to really reach goal without shutting down to liquids only... I loved when my band was tight. I could barely eat at all and I worked out like a fiend! It is not that I am eating BAD foods now as I mostly eat very clean, I just eat too much! I cant wait, I am counting down the days!
  13. Hi , I am getting revised from band to sleeve by my original doctor Dr. Douglas Ewing in Paramus NJ. Its called Advanced Lap-Associates 201-646-1121. He is going to do mine in one step but everyone is different it depends on what condition your band is in. He will base what he is going to do with the outcome of your UPPER GI AND Barium Swallow test you would have to do...I did all was clear and i can get it done in one step. Call him. Tell him i sent you.

    Before & After RNY Pics

Hey Dev, My original RNY was in 2002. I was 5'2" and 268 then 11 months later I was at goal 132 pounds. I did just have a revision 2/9/16 but you can read my story in my profile if you'd like. Here's a picture: Best of luck with your surgery and feel free to ask all the questions you want
  15. Dr Snow & Dr Van Wagner no longer share a practice as of Feb 1st. I will call Dr Van Wagner's office though and see if their nutritionist takes outside patients. Thanks so much!!! Hello! I am new here and am seeing Dr. Snow, also (though I live in the Festus area). Have my 5th out of 6 dietitian appointments on monday before I can be officially approved for the sleeve. I have been seeing the dietitian in Dr. Wagner's office and before the first of the year, visits were free. After the split, I pay $20 copay, but can still see her. Oh that's fantastic! I did email her earlier today to see if she's accepting new clients since I didn't see her before my revision. Thanks again for sharing Best of luck at your last appointment & on your weight loss journey!

Not sure who I should tell!

The only people I told about my band to sleeve revision was my mom and aunt since I needed them to take me to the hospital and watch my son. I feel this is a very personal decision and it really isn't anyone's business. I've been starting to eat healthier and talking about my weight loss to a few people at work so they are aware that I'm working to get healthy. They do know that I had surgery but I told them I had a hernia repaired, I didn't lie just didn't tell them I also had a revision. You just need to do what you feel is best and if not telling anyone then don't. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. Hello everyone I had my sleeve on 20013 after dealing with a leak for over a year I finally got s Revision to Bypass on February 2016 after almost two weeks in the hospital I'm home and so far doing good .ill keep you posted in a month .
  18. First of all the MGB is not at all new and I correspond with MANY MGBs on FB who have had the procedure some as many as 14 years out and are doing amazing ! Second, I totally understand about the sleeve stretching as it happened to me as well though I have no idea why some tend to like to argue this fact. I was a band patient, did amazing, loved my band, revised to sleeve, gained 30lbs, revised to MGB a year ago and doing great now !! 7 lbs from goal, no issues except I do tend to go to the bathroom A LOT but it's livable. Dr. Kelly is great, I consulted with him on my MGB and would have went with him except that Dr. Rodriguez who is equally as qualified did in house financing which helped me out a lot. Come over the FB, there are 2 very active MGB groups that will be happy to answer all your questions from those who have actually had the procedure and not those who really have no idea what it's all about.

    March 2nd sleevers

I was sleeved on the 2nd also (band to sleeve revision). Got home yesterday and feel pretty good. I did have some gas pains but they are mostly gone. Now I just feel like I've done 20,000 crunches. I am still very bloated, I weighed myself when I got home and I was up 2 pounds, I'm going to weight myself again until a full week out, I don't want to get discouraged. I'm having trouble getting in fluids because I just don't feel like eating or drinking anything. But I'm trying to force myself to take a couple sips every 15-20 mins. Can't wait to get on full liquids next week. Good luck to all of you on this journey! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Welcome to the forum, it takes alot of guts to do what youve done, coming forward with your story. What an awful experience you've been thru. I can't give you much advice as to your lap band, Im a gastric sleeve pt, but did want to encourage you to see your physician about it. The nurse mentioned this very thing in my nutrition class they have people drop out from their program because they've gained some weight and too embarrassed to go back. She said please don't let that stop you from coming back. Like the above poster mentioned, they want to help you, not shame you. They've seen it all before. Maybe you could consider a lap band to sleeve revision? There are alot of people in this forum that have had that done that can give advice. Best of luck to you!

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

I had RNY bypass in 2003. I believe it's better than the sleeve. Hunger; never was an issue except for what I want to eat; not that I felt hungry. Vitamins; never a problem. hair loss; just having surgery will do that; and it grows back. No regrets here and glad the sleeve wasn't popular back then. I don't see the benefit of the sleeve over bypass. And look how man sleeves are revised, especially in your BMI range. Good luck with however you go!

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

I am 34 months post-op RNY surgery. I choose this approach over sleeve because I had severe acid reflux (GERD) prior to surgery and that is the recommended approach for that condition. Also I choose it due to the low rate of revisions. If I underwent the knife once, I do not want to repeat it again. After surgery, I completely lost my hunger. It was not difficult to lose weight when hunger is not constantly continuously gnawing at your bonds. The hunger returns after a year or two, but it does not have the same intensity as before surgery. I had several conditions prior to surgery and took many prescription drugs prior to surgery. Most of these conditions went into remission shortly after surgery and have remained there. So even though I have to take Vitamins, it is offset by the fact that I am no longer taking these prescription drugs. As far as exercise, one of the best exercises after surgery is walking. So if you can walk for around 30 minutes each day, you should do fine. As far as choosing between RNY gastric bypass and sleeve, I would place a lot of weight on what your surgeon recommends.

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

The bypass is the golden standard for weight loss procedures. There are many people who get revised from sleeve to bypass. I take medications, and never needed a higher dose of anything. As far as I can tell the lack of absorption means that, no you won't absorb everything you put into your mouth, so you won't get those calories either. Which is a good thing if you're trying to lose weight and maintain for the rest of your life. Both surgeries you have to take Vitamins daily. I, too, was concerned about hunger. Before surgery I was worried that I'd be hungry still, well no - not for weeks and months. I am 2 months out and my hunger is returning, BUT a tiny meal and I'm stuffed for hours. Lol. I am able to feel very satisfied all day long on about 400-500 calories a day. However, Head hunger (cravings) won't be going away with either surgery. Also, the complication rate is less than 1% with the bypass. Higher than the sleeve? Sure, but still it's very unlikely. I've gone from 237 hw to now 189 in 2 months. Good luck to you on whichever surgery you decide.
  24. I am three weeks out of VBG to RNY revision and have been on soups since Monday. I have also been having pain on left side that feels like fire sometimes other times just sharp pain. Also swelling in feet but mostly left foot. Called my dr today and he is sending me to ER for a cat scan with contrast to see if I have a leak! I asked what do you do if there is one and he said drain it but how do you stop the leak? I don't have time for this lol!
  25. Scarring varies based on genetics and how thin the skin is. In many cases, those who have been obese or morbidly obese for a long time have very thin and fragile skin. It's much more difficult to get a beautiful thin scar in those cases. My BL/BA scars are barely noticeable 1.5 years out. My front LBL is a very narrow white line below my bikini line. My arm lift scars are a bit wider but fading. My back LBL had some hypertrophic scarring and is a lot more noticeable. Not anything the doctor could have done differently. I have read research reports that taping can prevent hypertrophic scarring, but I'm allergic to almost all adhesives, so not a great option for me. I may get a scar revision on my back done some day but it doesn't bother me enough to do it right now.
