Anyone had splotchy rash after surgery?

I'm 3 days post opt and my left leg was red. I did notice it in the hospital but kept forgetting to pint it out to anyone. I don't have a fever and it looks like today it's back to normal. Did anyone else have that? Eating is a slow process but going reasonably well. I too am having a hard getting water in my body. I'm down almost 10 pounds to date.
  2. My hubby who has never ever in his life had to worry about one thing he ate. Could not gain weight for the life of him. Miss a meal and lose 10 lbs. kinda guy. The other day he called me into the bedroom and told me his belt shrunk. I said, 'honey leather belts don't shrink.' And he said,' this one did and also my pants. Your washing them in hot Water aren't you?' I said, 'no, your eating everything on your plate and almost mine as well.' In which he replied, 'I never have to worry about what I eat. Look at me.' I said, yup I'm looking at your expanding waist!' LOL
  3. This makes me wonder about losing the nutritional benefits of soup in the long term. If I eat a vegetable soup I guess the food particles are probably passing through quicker. I also drink and don’t wait more than a few minutes to eat. I do wait 30 minutes after eating to drink. It got much easier after the first 6 months to drink more quickly so first thing in the morning I try to drink 10-12 ounces just to get fluids in. Same thing at night
  4. I'm on day 7 of my pre-op (Band goes on tomorrow!) and I was not given a calorie goal, I have been limited to 20 grams of protein per day. (A Carnation SFInstant breakfast with 1% has 13 grams!) Amazingly, I'm OK, and I've lost 19 lbs this week.
  5. I've seen this question several times and since I also had left shoulder pain, I thought I would relay what I learned. The following is a direct quote from the book that my surgeon provided to me pre-op. I found it helpful. In the book The Lap-Band Solution, Dr. Paul O'Brien writes: "It is common to have pain at the left shoulder area after the procedure. This pain is actually coming from the diaphragm, which is the large sheet of muscle that separates the chest, with its heart and lungs, from the abdomen. It is called referred pain because although it comes from the diaphragm, the brain interprets it as coming from the left shoulder and you feel sore there. It is common early after the operation but usually settles in a few days. Occasionally it can linger on for many weeks. We (the author) do not know exactly why it occurs and therefore we cannot predictably avoid it. Apart from letting time pass, various simple techniques have been found to help and are worth trying: hot packs to the shoulder standing or sitting upright resting quite still for 10 minutes walking about peppermint tea simple pain relievers" The other thing that my doctor told me is that if the pain moves beyond the shoulder area, e.g. into the upper arm, neck or chest, to consult a doctor immediately, call an ambulance or get myself to the ER because it could be something more serious. A scary reminder that with obesity comes a higher risk of heart attack. Boy, I can't wait to get down to a normal weight!
  6. It will work honest! I felt the same way though and seriously without even trying that hard at all I am 19 lbs away from my goal and its only been a little bit over 3 months! and the BEST part!!!!! I wont gain it back this time!!! woo hoo!!

    Day after Surgery

I had my surgery yesterday. I stayed overnight since we live 3 hours away from the sugery center. Now I'm on a liquid diet for 3 days, then thick liquids for two weeks, then two weeks of mushies. My follow up visit is local and is next week. First fill I believe isn't until week 4. I'm doing great....so far my pain is really just a little discomfort and soarness....about a 1 or 2 out of 10. I was worried it would be way worse then this, but it really isn't bad at all. It is a great relief. I'm taking pain medicine only at night to help with sleeping, but I'm just fine in the day. I had chicken broth with unjury chicken soup added in for protein today. I'm not hungry at all....but I know I need to get liquid and protein in for healing. I found out my original surgeon had cornea transplants.....good god, how bad were his eyes? The replacement surgeon was awesome, he had about 20 years of doing these types of surgeries.

Hey Jackie, that is just what I am here for. My goal is to help others and pass on what I have learned along the way. I had some wonderful people who really helped me when I had my surgery and we have become good friends along the way. You are doing fantastic with your weight loss Yeah for Jackie. You honestly have to stop and have talks with yourself--so your brain understands who is in charge. Your brain can play some nasty tricks on you along with the smell of food the they are bringing into the house. I am sure they don't even think about it but sit down and nicely tell them, right now this is NOT working at all for you. 2 more days, I can still remember when when I got to start on the 2nd 10 days. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I got to have creamy soup--and I could only get down about 1/4 of a cup not even all that, but it taste soooooo good. You can and will do this and you are going to be so successful. sugar free Popsicles were really good too--get some of those and try them. Just remember you have earned the right to be skinny and it is going to happen. Hugs, Suzanne

Hi, Yes sometimes family and friends become more of a problem than help, and right now you just need some peace in your life. You really don't and won't have hunger. What you are having is "head hunger" your head is telling you that "IT" wants to eat, because for all your life the head has rules what and when you were eating. Now you are going to take control and pick how much, and when you are going to eat. It takes a good two months to get this habit going. That is why the first month is the hardest. When people bring things in the house--it is the smell of the food that you are dealing with. Ask them to please not do this for this first month. If they want something else please eat it where they picked up the food. It is really hard when someone does that to you. Glad to hear that your pain is going away. Each day it gets better. You just have to adapt to the lifestyle changes that you are going to be making. Healthy choices when it comes to food. I have a new Protein Drink that I just love. I have ALWAYS just had Premier Protein Drink that I got at costco after 3 years I wanted to try something different. I wanted to try something different and so I had heard a lot of people talk about "Mint Cookies." It is sooooooooooo good. This is where I ordered it from www.netrition.com The item number to order this is 39-0963 it is made by Syntrax and you can have it in the 2nd 10 days. The Label says Matrix 2.0 Mint Cookies This might be something that would make it a little easier for you. The cost of it is $22.95 for 2.16 lbs. It truly is good. You can mix it with water or milk. I use Skim Milk. They have other flavors once you get to the site and find it. I have also ordered banana Cream--have not tasted it yet. Hang in there it will get a whole lot better. Hugs, Suzanne

Hi You are going to have some talks with yourself about all the food. I have said many times about how hard the 1st month is. This is part of it dealing with the food. You just have to tell yourself that this is only for 30 days--NOT A LIFETIME. It does get better the 2nd 10 days. Food will come back into your life the 2nd months. You NOT LONGER LIFE TO EAT. From here on out you eat to life. You have to find things to do to keep the food in 2nd place not be the only thing you are thinking about. Take a magazine out and plan on some new clothes that you will be able to have. Do a little day dreaming about what it is going to be like in 6 months, Hugs, Suzanne
  12. #9grammy in TWO WEEKS you went from a size 14 to a 10?? WHOLEY MOLEY! I started at an 18-20 in March and am down to a 14-16 now. I would be thrilled if I could get in to a 10 in 2 weeks! Awesome for you!

    Introduction

I too am new at this and keep finding myself back to the same question.. how to prepare for the family.. I am the one who makes the lunches and dinners and finding myself struggleing with how to continue that especially now since I am doing the 10 day liquid diet now. Surgery date is 12/8...

After the first 10 days. So starting the 2nd 10 days is when you can have the Premier Protein drinks if that is what you are talking about. Suzanne
  15. I am 4 weeks post op. I renewed my gym pass. Before surgery I was taking phentermine 37.5 (appetite suppressant, energy booster) so I'd be able to work out for hours. On phentermine I would push hard and burn lots of calories. I loved what the pill did for me. But my doctor no longer wants me on it because of the long term risk. Going to the gym without my energy booster is awful. I can barely do 10-15 min on the elliptical at a low resistants. And the treadmill is just a joke. I can barely get to 5 min. Can someone please help me... Is there something out there that will help me in the gym? Get me going.

    Dr. in Lehigh Valley

Hi for those of you not wanting to wait the 6 months it's the insurance companies that require it. I'm going to a seminar by Dr, Borse July 10, 2008. Spoke to my insurance they are sending me paperwork but I have to be on a 6 month supervised diet and go thru the counseling etc.. before you can be banded. A lot of it makes sense because if you are not going to follow the program what good is it? I'm looking at the band as an assistance not a cure. You can have the band and not lose weight. The band is a physical reminder I still have to do the work. My husband's friend had gastric bypass - he was over 200 lbs overweight. He said the beginning was hard but he is so happy he had the surgery. Now he has to wait a year for the cosmetic surgery to remove all the excess skin. Even with the surgery HE had change his outlook on food and exercise the surgery helped. If you are looking at this surgery as a quick fix don't botter. It's a help but it all comes down to you. I'm at a point where I will do what they say. I'm tired of hurting and not being able to walk. I want to be the person I was before the weight took over.

My hubby has his done tomorrow!!!!

it is wonderful to have the band together! My hubby will have his two years this May and I waited patiently for mine, finally banded 10/13/2008. We constantly push each other and support each other. It's nice to know when he's at the table and looks at me with that look, I know how he feels, I know what's going on. I hate that it took me so long to get mine, but I wouldn't trade having him with me for anything.

They're great aren't they! I have lost 29 lbs so far but fell off the waggon over the holidays... should be at least another 5-10 lbs lighter. I can't wait to lose my next 20 lbs... I know I can do it with the help of the band... best decision I ever made.
  19. Hi folks, Tomorrow, I am having my first fill (I had my surgery on 9/17/10), and I wonder if it is okay to eat Breakfast before I go for the fill or if I need to have an empty stomach. I looked over all the literature I received before my surgery and couldn't find anything about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

    Gaining before first fill :o(

My doctor's fee includes one year of after-care -- 12 monthly appointments. I had one cc in my 10-cc band at surgery and three ccs added two weeks ago. I don't know how much will be added from now on but I will see the doctor every month whether I get a fill or not so I don't think his decision will be motivated by money but I can see where that could be an issue.
  21. How is everyone doing from the July group? I had VSG on July 10, started at 346.6. Now I'm at 293.2... Down about 53 pounds. I'm feeling good. I still can't SEE a difference in my physical appearance. Others make positive comments, but I'm not able to see it yet. How's everyone else doing? Sent from my iPhone using VST
  22. 2bullymom, I think it was I just couldn't believe I was smaller. I kept buying 14-12 pants and I'd wear for an hour and they would be baggy, really bad. So I went in and got a 10, now I can wear some 10's and some 8's. But my top I like it bigger, do have some larges as long as they hide the belly flab lol. Hang in there you to shall get down and it's a great feeling. If I couldn't lose any more than the 50 I have I will be happy. My new husband loves the new me, well he loved me before but I get more compliments now.

    Gaining before first fill :o(

I have a 10 cc band and was filled to 4 cc at time of surgery. I must be a wierdo, because I DO feel a little restriction, and get a tummy ache if I try to eat more than a cup of food. I can't eat near the amount that I used to. Some foods stick with me for hours afterward and are uncomfortable. (Meat) I've been stuck once eating fish. I thought I would die. No PB yet though. I'm scheduled for my first fill on Jan. 11, but honestly don't feel like I need one yet. I'm 6 weeks out and lost 26 pounds. Do I really need a fill?

I know what you mean about losing 100# and trying to imagine what that would be like. I am a LOT farther out than you considering my band time as well as my sleeve time and I've lost 132#. I never thought this day would come. During weight loss it is exciting each time the scale goes down, but after you get to goal and have time to think about it it's different. You sit back and think, "WOW! I lost a person!" Hind sight is the eye opener with WLS, that is when you figure out all the stuff you learned while you were losing it but didn't realize you knew it. If I knew then, what I know now... things would have been easier in some ways and harder in some ways. I have a box of Velveeta cheese in my cupboard. One day after I lost about 20# I was at the store and I realized... I've lost **10** of those! That's a lot of Velveeta cheese. Today when I need to get back on track I look at that old, nasty, expired, gross cheese and realize.... I have lost 66 of those. Melt that and glue it to your hips! That's a lotta lotta lotta cheese. That box is probably freeze dried by now but I do not care. I will never throw it away. That was what kept me realizing just how much I was losing and today it's my icon. ;o) In my wildest dreams I never thought I would reach a point where I had over 100# to lose. When I finally looked at myself and realized I was pretty darn fat and it was time to do something about it I just got depressed and ate more. Today I look back and I think it was all worth it. I wouldn't want to regain but I'm glad I have this journey. I have learned more about myself than I ever would otherwise. I have skills and knowledge that I wouldn't have if I hadn't have lost all that weight. I think there is something about being a 100# plus - person. Meaning, those of us who have over 100# to lose. It's just different, the mindset, what we learn, what we experience. Hard to explain but it's different emotionally and physically. I'm not saying it's better or worse, it's different. I'm glad I got fat because I wouldn't have had the journey. Someday I will be the wise old lady down the street and all the little children are going to want to come to my house and hear my stories. I already have a ton of them! But it's a journey like this that will create that little old lady I'll become someday. Lisa, I see you as being exactly the same. I think you will be the cool old lady down the street that kids will love.
  25. Owing to the surgeon today and hoping to get my first fill. I was last there in February and he asked me why I was losing so much weight. That have my brain/emotional side permission to cut back on exercise and not pay as close attention to my portions and food choices. Now I have gained 10 pounds back and could just kick myself. The band is just a tool, and it is my job to use it responsibly. Hoping today puts me back on the track to weight loss and healthy choices. Thanks for listening!! Putting it in print makes me accountable.
