Anyone had any revision after ESG?
Lovesgirl posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the ESG with Dr. McGowan in Cary, NC Oct 14, 2021. VERY happy with him, all his staff and everyone at the Wake Med hospital. FIRST CLASS all the way! That being said. Day of surgery my weight was 253. This coming week is my 6 month anniv and I have lost down to 227. Yes it is great! but I was so hoping for more after 6 months. I reassure myself that my skin will adapt better by losing slower, I haven't had any hair loss, etc. But I am 54 and ready to live my life! This baggage is in my way and keeping me from living my life the way I want to. A few months ago, the nurse put me on Topomax to help with cravings (as my insurance will not pay for Wegovey or other "weight loss" meds- I was a self pay for the surgery). Several months after the surgery I asked the question . . does the Dr. make everyones' stomach in surgery the same resulting 20% size?? or is everyone's different because ... Patient A's stomach could hold 5 lbs of food, and patient B could only hold 1 lb of food. So did they both end up with same size stomach pouch? The answer is no. He gives you stomach pouch that is 20% of YOUR stomach size. So that is why some people can hold more than others. Makes sense. Kind wish I had thought about it pre surgery though! I'd asked for an extra small one! LOL I don't feel a lot of restriction anymore. So I am wondering where do I go from here? Should I ask for a different medication or increased dose of topomax? Does Dr. McGowan have a way to do a scan or ultrasound and see if your sutures have come loose or if your pouch has stretched out? Do they have a way to do a revision and put in tighter sutures or make a smaller pouch? and if they do . . is it the same cost as the original surgery? I know I am under their care program for a year that includes nutrition counseling, etc. Is there a cost to continue that after a year? Anyone who knows answers, please let me know. I want to be able to think about things before my zoom call later this week. -
Sleeve with high BMI
TheWeightisOvr replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have to lose a lot as well, like 180lbs. I was and still kinda am thinking the same thing. Like how can I do this with the sleeve. The other poster said some truth about making the permanent sacrifices. That is what I am etching into my brain now. I’m 6 weeks out. My body needs to eat healthy to be at its best I’m finding out. So I have to explore various ways to eat healthy but delicious food and exercise. I’m going to incorporate self care days of massages, foot spas, meditation, journaling and other activities. -
Hello everyone! So I’m 5 weeks out and have been told to start doing low carb before the 2 weeks of all liquids. Can I have low carb tortillas and bread?
-
Hi Charlie, Great news on the op ! I had my sleeve March 15th so coming up for four weeks, I had bad wind pains too - keep sipping fluids, peppermint tea was good but the difference for me was walking ! Only up and down the lounge to start with but it really helped, good luck xx

Question about hair loss after sleeve
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
WHAAAAT???? Nobody ever told me this!!!! I just had a crown and 3 fillings done and had my teeth deep cleaned. I'm going next week to have sealant put on them because I have sensitive teeth. Holy smokes. I better call my dentist tomorrow. I had absolutely no idea this could happen!!!! -
Hi! My surgery was on 4/4/2022 so I'm 6 days post op today. I was sent home with 28 days worth of Lovenox injections to prevent blood clotting. I understand how important they are and 100% plan on doing what I need to do with them, however, I am bruising up after some of the injections. I already have the bruises from the incisions which look ROUGH, but I feel like these bruises might be contributing to the chaos that is my torso right now. I also saw in the side effects and papers about the injections to contact the doctor if you start to bruise, but it's listed as a "minor side effect" and I don't feel sick or anything from it so I've kept on with them and will say something to her at my 1 week post op visit tomorrow. Did anyone have these injections as well and if so, did you have any issues using them or reactions to them?

April 2022 Surgery Buddies
321 Lift Off replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I am writing with my postop update. Maybe it will help someone waiting for surgery or in the immediate postop phases. On 4/5/22 I had a lap band to gastric bypass conversion. My procedure was complicated by the fact that I had a hiatal hernia and then the surgeon discovered an umbilical hernia (previously undiagnosed and not seen during preadmission studies) which he also needed to repair. The complexity of the surgery led to a two-night admission. I was on a constant IV drip and had to use the bathroom approximately every hour - the entire time! It really hurt to prop myself up to get out of bed and I would work on developing those muscles preop if I could turn back time. I hardly ate any food (broth and sugar free Jello) in the hospital, and I am still struggling now because I am just not hungry. I walked three times during the two days in the hospital - not ideal but it was the best I could do at the time. My pulse ox dipped to the low 80s several times (my normal is 99-100), so I was using supplemental oxygen to help. My abdomen was incredibly bloated and bruised. It is now going down slightly which I credit to walking and Colace. I cannot stress how helpful I think Colace has been for me. I have to wear a binder around my abdomen, and I do not yet know for how long. It is helpful when I cough and do my breathing exercises. I am now super deconditioned, which really surprised me. I know some members of this forum have been able to bounce back fairly quickly, but everyone should consider the possibility that they might need more time. I still get winded every time I move (i.e., bed to chair, chair to standing, etc.). I need naps and I have never been a napper. I am definitely going to have to take at least an extra week off from work. I try to walk a little a few times a day now and it is very tiring, so I use a cane just for reassurance. All in all, I am so happy with my decision to have surgery! I am extremely grateful to read everyone's stories and see questions and answers on this board and I hope April 2022 Surgery Buddies (and whoever else wants to participate) can move to the postop board next month so we can continue to share our progress. I wish everyone who is still waiting for their April 2022 surgery the best! I will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has. I hope we all keep in touch! Thanks! -
Average Weight Loss In 6 Months
Arancini replied to Crisscat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I weighted 304lbs surgery day (highest weight ever) and have lost 105lbs so far being 6 months and two weeks out. I’ve had several stalls one lasting an entire month. It’s going comparatively slow now with “just” 1kg per week. I’m 5’8 so my surgeon wants me to lose another 40lbs. -

Hi Charlie. Thank you, congratulations on yours as well. Yes, it is very strange for me to struggle eating (drinking) enough, since my struggles have always been the opposite, to try to eat less! I’ve been watching lots of YouTube videos to be reassured that this is normal and that eventually it will get easier. I haven’t started my vitamins yet. I’ve been instructed to wait until the 18th which will be a few days before I start the puréed stage. That could be a reason why I’m feeling so week, so I’m actually looking forward to starting them. I’ve been sipping on a protein shake all morning, but am getting antsy and am wanting to get out in the sun and do some walking. I think that’s probably a good sign. How have you been with getting your walking in? -

March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Not full time solids, but I do have on occasion. Random things like a like a piece of chicken from one of my kids Chipotle bowls, a (very small) piece of pizza during a birthday party, stuff like that. My rny was 3/1 and I am almost 6 weeks out. Not sure if it helps, but my dietician said rny heal faster than sleeve so we normally progress sooner. Sent from my SM-G781U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I think I can speak on behalf of most of the long-timers on here in that yes, we dreaded the loose skin at first, but we'd take it any day of the week over being morbidly obese again. ANY DAY! I lost over 200 lbs, so I had a lot of loose skin. It was easy to hide in clothes, though (I'll post a picture below). I'd just wear long-ish tops with 3/4 or full-length sleeves and tummy-control leggings (although some thing like Spanx would have worked as well). I had my removed because it started to drive me crazy. My abdominal skin would slap up against me when I exercised - ugh. But yes - it was really just cosmetic, and like I said, no one but me (and my husband) knew it was there. skin doesn't weigh very much. Unless you get a lot of lipo done, too, we're talking less than five lbs. I think I "lost" maybe four lbs when I had it removed (which unfortunately came right back on!) some insurance policies will cover removal if it's causing medical problems, like chronic rashes, that don't respond to conventional treatments. I never had any issues with anything like that, so I paid out of pocket. anyway, here I am BEFORE I had plastic surgery. I had a TON of excess skin, but as you can see, it's pretty easy to hide it if you're wearing the right clothes.

Hi Charlie, congrats on the sleeve. I had the same problem for 7 weeks, I had some swelling and struggled to get liquids down in any amount. Try warm drinks, warm milky coffee and tea, Bovril and oxo are good. Cold shakes and ice lollies, Britvic Tomato juice really helped me, its sugar free and 47 cals for 250mls. All count towards your quota and some days I only managed 1/3rd of this, it gets better in time. Now at 4 and a half months I can take 2 gulps at a time. Is it wind pain or are you taking large gulps, take tiny sips. I have Wind relief tablets from Boots that are great at calming excessive burping type wind. Just do the best you can every day and you will get there. You are still healing. I found my team at Spire were very helpful, call yours if you need reassurance

A week before surgery, I had to shower in a surgical detergent every day. It wasnt the most pleasant body and hair wash. I got to the hospital at 8 am and got checked in. By 12 noon I was dressed in my gown, sexy socks and cap and being wheeled down to Anaesthetics. I was quickly put under and woke up in my room with a drip and the oddest sensation in my lower legs, I had plastic boots on that pulsed. It stops thrombosis.

Hi everyone. I’m so glad I’ve found this forum. I’ve just had my sleeve on 4th April so nearly a week ago. Currently struggling with my liquid intake, I get terrible wind pains when drinking. Any hints or tips and is this normal?

Have they checked to see if you have a stricture ? They thought I had but it all settled down at about 8 weeks out.

Dehydration after surgery
Arabesque replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The dehydration occurs if you’re not getting in or aren’t close to getting in your 64oz/2L. Some people struggle at first because of post surgical swelling (hurts to swallow) & for many it’s a new habit to drink that much &/or to sip slowly. I always drank a lot of water so I probably went into surgery being long term hydrated. For the first 24hrs after surgery my surgeon pumped me full of fluids. I had a lot of swelling & wouldn’t have drunk 1/2 cup of any liquid. Slept a lot & wasn’t interested in consuming anything. Day 2 maybe drank a cup but peed all day long. Day 3 could have a little more & each subsequent day I was getting closer to goal. Probably took a good week to be reach or be close to goal. Was never dehydrated. Sip all day long. Set an alarm on your phone so every few minutes you sip. Keep fluids beside you at all times including by your bed (sip whenever you wake through the night - I still do). Some people find ice cold liquids easier to drink. I preferred them to be warm - more soothing. My first mug of green tea was glorious. Remember your fluid goals include all the liquids you consume: shakes, water, herbal or green teas, broths, soups, etc. -
Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*
HE_TheBrave replied to TheWeightisOvr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Glad to find this thread. I’m definitely a slow loser and I’m trying really hard to stay encouraged. I was 255 my day of surgery. 6 weeks out I weighed in at 249. Not even 10 pounds. And I’m doing everything that I was instructed to do. Staying on the diet, watching my portions, tracking my meals, the 20 20 20, getting the right amount of protein, drinking enough fluid, exercising every day. I am honestly very discouraged to not see any real movement. But it is encouraging to know that I’m not alone. But I’ve definitely had moments where I wondered, what was the purpose of going through all this and getting the surgery, if almost 2 months out, I’m not even at 15 pounds weight loss? The doctors and dietitian say I’m not doing anything wrong and to be patient, but I feel it’s much easier to say that than it is to be dealing with it. Just had to vent that. Now I’m in tears smh. But I’ll keep swimming. -
Curious if others have had nicotine blood tests? I was a smoker 21+ years ago but quit. Ive had 2 nicotine tests already and I was just told the other day that I had to get another 1 week before surgery. I may have been told but dont remember, why is this necessary?

I’m 7 weeks post op and have all the regrets. I can’t stay hydrated and nothing seems to sit well even fluids. Can’t handle protein drinks or any of the water add ins. IVs keeping me hydrated at this point. I am hungry but can’t eat and have almost no physical strength anymore. Say it gets better.

Regret is normal and part of the process for many
Crisscat replied to SleeverSk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I havent had the sleeve surgery yet but its supposed to be sometime mid May or end of May. Still waiting on scheduling to call me. I havent started regretting it yet since Ive not had surgery but I have gone back and forth numerous times of asking myself do I really want to do this. Sometimes its yes and sometimes its no, I believe my mind is just trying to talk me out of it because its the "unknown" as to how my body will react. I have to say honestly I am very fortunate as I am not on pills for high blood pressure, diabetes or anything else. Im just morbidly obese (I hate those words lol) What I do have is a knee injury from about 15 yrs ago that I have severe osteoarthritis from and I was just told this past week that I need a knee replacement! Im only 53 so I said no, whats my other options. I was told therapy and cortisone/steroid shots in the knee to maybe postpone it. I was also told at my current weight I could not be a candidate because I am too big *sighs*. So Im seeing this surgery as beneficial and something I need to do for my overall health, knee issues and I still have a young son at home who needs me to live an active life (he's 11). If I get in the muddy grub mindset I try to direct my thoughts in another direction. Not saying that after surgery will be different or that I may not start regretting it but I have goals I need to see through to the end if at all possible I have heard the same thing about the gas pains but Ive also heard people say they took Gas X and walked alot and that seems to help dissipate it. Hoping to stay positive going down this road and your words from your experience is very helpful. Thank you for sharing! -
Mine was discovered during surgery, and was a very large hernia, so I'd been living with it for a long time. It explains a lot: the reflux, the discomfort I'd feel after eating a big meal right under the ribs, etc. That said, pain in that region could also be gallstones (though that's typically a little over to your right side), or an ulcer. I've had all three.
