I am having my sleeve surgery on weds Jan 4th and I am so excited! I have struggles with my weight my entire adult life and aim tired of the fight. I have been on every diet under the sun as well as every weight loss medication on the market. Besides fen-fen, which is not off the market, nothing has worked. I live in Scottsdale and am having my surgery done at Scottsdale Bariatrics, Dr. Blackstone was supposed to be my surgeon but scheduling was better for me to go with her associate Dr. Reynoso. I have been attending the support groups and have heard great things about him so I'm sure it will be just fine! I think what I'm struggling with most is the thought that I will no longer be hungry. That is an unfathomable thought! I am going into this process with an open mind, a willingness to follow all directions and patience. I am excited and ready to begin this new and healthy phase of my life! Will keep you all posted as I continue kn this journey.

Waiting to have 1st appt. and a ?
Mommyto1 replied to SDTeaGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My insurance originally required a 6 month supervised diet, but that changed in August, so I only had to do a 3 month diet. I went to the seminar on June 15 and has my 1st appointment with my doctor on June 21. When I went in for the initial appointment I was hoping to have my surgery scheduled ASAP, but having to wait has actually been beneficial. I have a significant amount of weight to lose (100+ pounds) and during this "waiting period" I've started to eat better and joined a gym to prepare for my life post-surgery. I was just approved today by my insurance company and my surgery date is set for October 15. -
What you wish you would have known
Babbs replied to jfzimmerman's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How damn hard this can be at times. Especially emotionally. Most of us have relied so much on food for comfort, boredom, celebration, sadness, etc....and learning other coping skills besides turning to food can be a hard pill to swallow. But I also didn't know how great it would feel to finally be in control of what goes in my mouth and seeing my weight decrease because of that. The rewards are endless! -
@Seahawks Fan just keep working at it. I was a month and a half in the 250s. If you need to break out of a stall there are 2 ways. Introduce more exercise (intensive cardio workouts) or shift calories to your body. I take it your hitting the gym as you mentioned muscle mass increase, maybe add a little more cardio. Our bodies like to regulate themselves, so by introducing a change you can usually break out of a plateau. Here is a good article explaining it the plateau, https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/weight-loss-plateau/art-20044615 ,talk to your team regarding the calories (article says to drop them, which we usually can't as we are already low). I spoke to my nutritionist and she actually is the one who recommend more calories to break out. I was only at about 1000 calories a day and when I told her my workouts she encouraged me to move to at least 1200-1400 daily. I lift 3-4 times a week and alternate jogging every day in between on top of my daily walk with the dog of 1.5 miles. So some days I get in 3-4 miles with the jog and walk. She said that my body was basically going into starvation mode and not letting go of weight because if my exercise routine. I try to keep my calories at about 1300 a day and has been working for me the last 2 months. Keep up the great work.

@Seahawks Fan you’re doing good and the scale will move soon...I was on a 3.5 week stall and the scale moved today, like you I was somewhat frustrated but I was noticing my clothes getting looser, as long as we stick to and follow the plan we will be fine. Congrats on your weight loss so far 👍🏾

Hi Dee, I'm 5'9 and weight 252 lbs right now. Prior to surgery I was 282. I had lost about 40 lbs on my own. You sound like you can get into really good shape. The best shape I was ever in was when I did martial arts as well. I'm so out of shape the most I can do is 30 minute workout at Curves. Best of luck to you. Keep us posted on your progress.

I'm Stalled?
ASKSARAH - Sleeve replied to the-Russ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
a stall is no loss of weight or inches in over 30 days. It irks me when people use this term so loosely. You are fine, Let your body do its thing. Congrats. -

My surgery is at NYU Langone Medical Center. As long as you've stuck to the diet, I'm sure you'll be fine! I was afraid because I gained weight at first, but then loss it really quickly. You got it! We're almost done! -

How much weight do you need to lose and by when? How many carbs are you eating? I did low carb (under 20g) and low fat preop and lost 15 lbs. three months out from surgery I do low carb higher fat and have lost 44 lbs I would have to agree to cut carbs significantly to reach your qualifying goal weight for surgery. -
Well went yesterday for my 2 week apt with the nutrionist and got on her magic scales lol I have lost 18 1/2 pounds and 12lbs of fat mass. I was so excited. Still wish it would have been more but time will bring me more pounds gone lol. Just had to share. Fastest I have ever lost weight in any of my years of different dieting.

when did your weight loss kick into high gear?
Brian Green replied to HYCIERRA's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Doctor told me it takes about 2 weeks for the changes to kick in I was disappointed last week after being 9 days out at support group to have only lost 1 lb, doctor and nurse both said this was normal and this surgery is not an over night weight loss treatment. so patients will have to prevail here -
Alcohol is a hobby in my relationship. Worried. Get sleeved this month.
shriner37 replied to Nikkipit's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are very few absolutes in this world, and that also relates to weight loss surgery. My surgeon told me that the key was moderation. The sleeve can tolerate alcohol just fine - the question is can I consume it in moderation and still achieve my health and weight goals. For me before surgery beer was a big piece of my social world, especially on weekends. In years past I had owned a bar for nearly a decade and drank almost daily. I believe alcohol, beer specifically, was a large part of my weight problem. In the seven months post surgery I have learned the following: 1) my sleeve can indeed tolerate alcohol; 2) it is a 'slider' meaning it doesn't fill me up like good quality Protein does; 3) it does hit me a little harder than before, and 4) it absolutely stops my weight loss in its tracks. For all of these reasons I keep alcohol consumption to a minimum, reserving it only for special occasions. For example I'm traveling to Las Vegas this coming weekend and will surely have a few cocktails. However I've invested too much in my weight loss journey to allow regular alcohol consumption to derail it. -
Okay all, I think I must be the biggest wimp! I was starting to get a little crazy last night thinking about the 6th. Nothing I couldn't stuff to the bottom of the priority list but there was a definite weight on my heart about this. I ignored it and went to bed. This morning I wake up with a tremendous headache. I thought my head was going to explode. Of course I HAVE to ignore that because I only have a half day at work today and I have a ton to do to get ready to be gone Thurs. and Fri. still. Then my son wakes up and he has diarhea. Lord help me, can anything else go wrong? Well, DH says its not problem and everything will be fine, but I can't help thinking that what lousy mother would leave her sick child to go have elective surgery. It's not like it's going to kill me if I don't have surgery tomorrow. So I have to go to work and I'm driving along and the headache is getting worse because I know I shouldn't be going and I know I should be at home with my little one, and I don't want to cancel surgery, and I'm being selfish, and my MIL shouldn't have to deal with this, and I really have gone through hell for two weeks to turn back now, and, and, and..... well, if your head isn't spinning after that, mine was. So I pull over and have a full fledged panic attack. Never had one of those before. It got so bad that I pulled out a candy bar my son had in the vehicle and took a bite....and I chewed....and I chewed....and I chewed....and spit it out. I called my school and said they would have to do something without me the rest of the week and then called hubby to come get me because I was hyperventilating and didn't think I should drive. Well that was 3 hours ago. I took a shower, a bath, and then a nap...and now I feel much better. I called my coordinator and she said, "If you weren't having anxiety, we'd be worried about you." She stepped me through all the reasons I was probably feeling these things and talked me calm. I'm better now and thought I would share this story so that if any of the other up and comers feel this way, they'll know they aren't alone. I almost feel guilty I'm such a wimp, but there is my mea culpa. Steph

Being banded on Nov. 2
Lorsbander replied to Robin Bird's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Robin- You will do fine. After you are banded you feel different about food. For me, I was on Clear liquids for 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery. I lost a lot of weight during that stage. It was a wonderful kick start. You start to see weight coming off on a daily basis and you do not want it to stop. I still go out to eat, but I don't eat very much and I am satisfied. It is fine. If ya sit and think about how much food is served to ya in a restaurant, it is crazy. I had Carlos O'Kelly's the other day and brought home the leftovers enough for 3 more meals! Here is some inspiration for ya! I was banded 11 weeks ago today. I am down 51 pounds, already halfway to goal! From a size 20-22 in August to a 12 today! I am alive now!!!!!!!!!:whoo::whoo::whoo::whoo: Surround yourself with supportive people. Tell people about your band, then there is more accountability! I know most of the people in my little town know about my band. They look at me to see if I am losing! That's great motivation! Best of luck to you! -
when did your weight loss kick into high gear?
shmily replied to HYCIERRA's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had to lose the wt I gained during the surgery...actually twice. I lost pre op 17 lbs in two week diet, and then gained during the surgery from all the Fluid... at one month I had lost a total of 37 lbs including the 17 during the pre op diet. Every one is different, so don't compare yourself with others. Stay the course, it will happen. -
eating better increased exercise still no weight loss
jaria007 replied to andielmt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
typically when bodies plateau, you can jump start your weightloss by changing your routine. Whether it be a different kind of exercise, a different kind of food, etc. There was this woman on TV who started eating backwards. She was eating her dinner for breakfast (fish, chicken, etc) and her breakfast for dinner (wheaties, etc). She lost a ton of weight. Not telling you to do that but maybe try changing your routine. It is normal to stall during weightloss so be sure to take your measurments as you may very well be losing inches. -
Purpose of weigh ins
puttingme1st replied to Timmy2shirts's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most insurance wants to make sure you don't gain any weight. Some require you lose a certain amount before surgery. Some doctors also require a certain amount of weight loss. -
I am 2 1/2 years post op. I lost 100lbs total and I was very happy about it. At about the 2 year mark, my OB Doctor started me on a hormone medication in an attempt to achieve pregnancy. This was unsuccessful, and caused me to gain about 25lbs in a two week period while taking it. The OB said it can be normal to gain weight while taking this, and some of it should go away once I stop. I haven't been taking it for about 3 months now and I have not lost a pound yet. My eating and exercise habits haven't changed at all. I am incredibly frustrated and depressed. I feel like a fool for "messing up" my weight loss journey in an attempt to have a baby that failed anyways. Has anyone had any similar issues that they may have any suggestions for me? I also have PCOS.

I don't weigh my food any longer as I did when I first began this journey. I find that I now know how much it will take to make me full and still lose weight. You definitely shouldn't feel any type of uneasiness or discomfort with your fill. The restriction as most people call it is that feeling of fullness without overeating. I however do feel somewhat of a stop warning when I am full as opposed to before I was banded when I felt nothing and ate and ate until I was miserable. But, I rarely get stuck or PB and it is always because I eat too fast or take too big of bites. I am finding as my fills increase, of course my ability to take bigger bites decreases and I have to slow down, chew better and take smaller bites. It makes a huge difference and I find I get full faster. I am one of those people who has lost interest in a lot of different foods but still have my favorites.

I've done the 5 months of monitored weight loss. I'm having doubts. My acid reflux has gotten so bad I now have to take omeprazole everyday because apparently everything I eat now gives me heartburn. I'm doubting my surgeon, the type of surgery I originally picked, the hospital and this whole thing. The surgeon hasn't followed up with me at all. I've seen him once since my first meeting. Are they supposed to follow up? The sleeve makes acid reflux worse, I'm teetering with the idea of bypass but not sure my surgeon will agree to do it. The other surgeon in the practice that I originally met with does bypass but he is seemed so impersonable and quick to pass me to another surgeon that I don't know if I would want him to do it-but he's been doing it for 32years. If I move hospitals I'm afraid of issues with medical records and tests being transferred over. I know deep down I want to do this-so bad, but I'm having so much anxiety. I need help please.

During the 6 month approval time for insurance...
Lottie replied to mrucker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Although I don't have Humana Insurance I had to have 6 consecutive months. Even if your doctor could not see you, maybe they'll have you come in and record your weight so you can present it to your insurance company. It's very frustrating but in the end, I am glad I took advantage of the 6 months because I took that time to learn as much about the lap band system as possible. I love my band. I would do it all over again if I had to. If you have to start over, it will be worth it. Hopefully you will not. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama. I did everything they required and had no issues. I wish you much success during your journey. -
What to tell co-workers?
marys replied to skinnyrebal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
absolutely positively DO NOT TELL ANYONE at work and be careful who else you tell - imo you can always tell people - even one or two years AFTER surgery - no one should know except your very closest loved one - again, just wait - once you tell you can not take it back. also, in my case i haven't lost any significant weight and the pain is unimaginable - it would be worse if i had told co workers and my mom, etc and had them constantly scrutinizing me - ugh can't even imagine it it is your business but please think carefully -
What to tell co-workers?
Ollie replied to skinnyrebal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't tell any anyone other than my husband and two sons. As far as work goes, I told them that since I had lost a few pounds prior to my 'hernia repair' I was going to continue watching what I ate and I was going to continue seeing a nutritionist for better health. They know that there are foods I can't eat now and with the nutritionist recommendations, I am on a special diet. Just make it seem like it is no big deal, change the subject when it gets to food or what you eat, or be direct and say that you don't want to discuss it. From what I have read on this forum, I am glad that it is only my family that knows. People want to see you fail for some ungodly reason...the less who knows the better in my opinion. And the weight loss is so gradual that the topic of what you eat will no longer be of interest. -
This feels amazing
jennibells replied to kaitlynmarie93's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt exactly the same way when I learned about the band and found out my insurance would cover it. I had no problem loosing the weight before surgery because I FINALLY felt like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Getting the band was the best thing I have ever done for myself and it is making me healthier every day! Keep up the good work girls!!!
