  1. They told me to count water And shakes separately. And to put the water first. So 64 oz water plus whatever would bring me to 60 grams protein. I’m just not wanting to drink. I don’t feel thirsty or hungry. It hurts when I drink, so it’s just not a good time lol. I had about 2/3 of a shake earlier.
  2. I am 6 weeks post-op and am able to eat pretty much anything and everything....including things I really shouldn't eat. I even had fried chicken at a family gathering - a leg and a wing. It was delicious and went down WAY too easy. Fortunately, I have continued to lose weight, although probably slower than many of you. I realize my weight loss would be quicker if I stuck with just lean protein and veggies - which I do MOST of the time - but I'm 62 yrs old and for me, the purpose of the surgery was to have a tool to help me not OVEREAT, as I have done all of my life, but still be able to enjoy my favorite foods in moderation. ALL THINGS in moderation! Fortunately, my nutritionist's plan does not exclude carbs - in fact, whole grain breads and pasta are included and encouraged in the program I am on. I am just so happy that I have been fortunate enough to have had an easy recovery from the surgery and absolutely none of the bad side effects. I continue to drink the protein20 waters to supplement my protein intake in order to allow me to enjoy other foods in my small tummy, and to help me with hydration - the ONE thing I still struggle with is getting my 64 oz in daily.
  3. Hi Suzy. Are you going with Dr. Shillingford? I just had an outstanding experience with both him and the Coral Springs medical center. I recommend 100%. I’m six weeks out, never really experienced any pain or discomfort other than a little bit at the incision sites, and I’m down about 24 pounds. Best of luck!
  4. Congrats and hope your recovery goes well. I'm still preop, scheduled for July 7 so I can't provide any insight yet. But I was debating on whether or not to weigh that first week post op. Water retention from all the fluids is for real, but you're right - only temporary!

    Weight gain & Health Issues

We have practically the exact same starting stats!! (Same height, but i was just 1 lbs shy of you at 235 😉) To answer your questions (and note that this pertains to my experience and may or may not be yours), no, i have not experienced and “serious” long-term or permanent health issues. I’m 3 years, 8 mnths post. My energy came back and then some by 1 month; the hair that started falling out at 3 months already started growing back about 6 months; my last set of labs done in March this year say im the picture of health. And i have maintained below goal weight since reaching it at 7 months post-op over 3 years ago. I do have a couple of slightly annoying changes due to the surgery/weight loss though, but nothing i can’t deal with, nor anything that would make me regret having it done: 1) i am gassy/have mild acid reflux now, lol..but im on medication that keeps it at bay and i adjust my lifestyle to accommodate it: go to sleep on empty stomach, take lactose pills before consuming dairy, etc.. 2) i am a lot weaker than i used to be..in terms of strength like lifting heavy things or opening jar lids. I figure i just need to build back more muscle, but im lazy i guess. Plus there’s always someone around to carry or open things for me anyway Lololololzzz. There are those out there that do experience some serious issues, but I don’t believe its the norm. You won’t know how YOU will fare until you do. Good Luck! ❤️
  6. Had my surgery on Tuesday. On Thursday I weighed 5lbs more than I did on Monday. Today, Friday, I'm down 1 lb. I know this is temporary, but hearing about how others' first week went will help me feel better if anyone wants to share. Doobie.
  7. This is a really useful article. I had surgery 5 weeks ago and am preparing to tell my parents this weekend. I told some close friends before surgery and they were all really kind and supportive, but I have a feeling it's going to be a lot harder with my parents. I think their position will be from a place of worry / concern, but it often manifests as anger or disappointment. I like the idea of writing down what I want to say as I think we might all end up upset and I want to make sure that I stay on track with the info I want them to have.

    Under 25 and choosing this?!

Hi everyone I’m 25 and I’m getting sleeved on the 13th of July I’m super nervous about whether I will have loose skin I’m 5’0 and 245 lbs my initial weigh in I was 265 about a week ago I plan on getting to 230 by the time I get sleeved my question is how much loose skin can I expect to have
  9. I had my gall removed 25 months after my sleeve (a year ago). My surgeon used the same scars as my sleeve. Similar recovery but while I had no gas pain after my sleeve I had lots after this surgery & they pumped me full of fluids because of my low BP. Came out of hospital about 3 kgs heavier. Groan. I probably had a little more general discomfort & took one opioid med at night on day 2 when I got home so I could sleep but no other pain meds after that. You’ll feel more comfortable going in this time because you’ve experienced abdominal surgery before & know generally what to expect pre & post the surgery. Plus you know the surgeon & their work 😉. Best thing, no liquid diet & phased return to eating after this surgery. I also wasn’t all that hungry for about a fortnight after either - bonus. PS - Developing gall stones is pretty common. They could have been pre existing or grew as a result of your weight loss. Some have their gall removed during their sleeve surgery (much like hernia repairs) if they were picked up. Have your cholesterol levels gone up? It’s a temporary side effect of the weight loss but stones will form as a result.

    First Post-Op Dr Visit

This is extremely common. So I kept my records & my doctors kept their’s. As @kcuster83 said the difference is still the same. If you’re like many of us you likely weigh yourself first thing in the morning before breakfast, naked. But when you go to the doctor, you’ve eaten, drunk, are clothed (I presume 😉) & their scales may be regularly checked & re calibrated while yours are never. By maintaining your own records you can keep a closer eye on your weight loss fluctuations etc. as against whenever your doctor appointments are (monthly, two monthly, etc.). But how often you weigh yourself is just what you feel most confident with. I was an everyday (couple of times a week now) but others rarely or never weighed themselves relying on their doctor’s scale alone. As for your rate of loss, we’re all different. Some loose slowly some more quickly. Just how it goes. Hardest will be that your husband will lose more quickly than you - gender injustice. Most important thing to remember is if your surgeon is happy you should be happy to. All the best.
  11. It will depend on how you recover. For me it wasn’t so much the physicality of my job, though I was tired a lot, it was I couldn’t concentrate for long periods & my head would get doughy because of the low blood pressure. I went back to work part time after 4 weeks but the symptoms persisted for a few weeks longer. Negotiate with your employer to see if you can return part time or at reduced hours if you need it & see how you go.

My taste buds are weird now LOL

The change in your taste buds can be really weird. Things you loved suddenly taste disgusting. I was eating smoked salmon for a couple of weeks then one day it was like🤮. And I couldn’t face the vegetables I always ate. Thankfully the tummy turning aspect it is only temporary. Enjoy embracing new flavours cause that new enjoyment will last. Oh & be glad your sense of smell hasn’t gone crazy either. That can make walking through malls, eating out & cooking at home miserable.
  13. Hi, has anyone had a lap cholecystectomy around 3 months post gastric sleeve? I will have one next Friday and I am only 3 months post gastric sleeve. I am little nervous.

Pureed Egg Salad (Keeping Me Sane)

So I can't stand light mayo or light salad dressings and I'm not sure I'll be a fan of Greek yogurt in its place. I get to start week 3 tomorrow and I'm so dang excited becuase I plan to make egg salad (I raise backyard chickens so can't wait to finally get back to eating their butt nuggets! 🤣), chicken salad, and tuna salad and I was planning on using regular mayo. My question as a new post bariatric patient is future plans with this eating lifestyle. My nutritionist said I won't be eating carbs for a while and even when I do start to introduce them, she said a lot of bariatric patients don't tolerate much of them. I was thinking low carb would be best for me as I have done it before but how would that work if I need to do low fat too? I've done keto before and to me, it's sooo much easier than low fat so I'm curious what others are doing successfully. Is there a way to find a happy medium between low carb and low fat?

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I see you said WakeMed. Raleigh area of NC? I only ask because I'm in Eastern NC on the coast but am from Winston-Salem! I've been a NC girl my whole life with the exception of two years when I was out in Colorado. So happy you are doing well! I'm getting ready to start week 3 post OP and I can WAIT to make my chicken salad and egg salad in puree form. Other than some issues with gassiness off and on, and lower energy, I am doing awesome too and am sooooo glad I finally, after two years of my primary care physician recommending it, had the surgery! Now it's all about getting healthy and active again! Hoping some of the medications I was taking for scary stuff will eventually be weened! Also hoping my hypothyroidism takes a back seat in the near future. Hehe!

Tender at incision sites but okay overall. I’ve gotten sick twice. We weren’t allowed anything yesterday. This morning, we got ice chips to let melt in our mouth. This afternoon they took us to a bar to get virgin frozen margaritas. I had maybe 2-3 oz of it before I couldn’t drink/eat anymore. I’m having a lime popsicle right now. After this it’ll be sipping on water until tomorrow.

    Low BMI Gastric Sleeve story

Hi There so glad to hear your journey has gone well. I am 5'5 and 209 pounds but started at 227 pounds. I have just started my second week of Pre-op diet and surgery is on 6/30/22. I am so confused and scared to lose too much weight after surgery. I would love to get to 140-150 pounds but feel any more than that would be too much. I am going back and forth in my head if this is even the right thing to do. I do not have a thyroid due to cancer and this is what has caused me to gain all this weight. I will be having my surgery in Palm Springs.

Post Op Return to work question

I am older, and while getting over the surgery was surprisingly easy, your body has been through a shock. You will get tired more easily, and "your nerves" as my mother used to say, may take a while as well. Look around the boards here. You will see people stressing over what some may consider as minor stuff...it isn't minor to them, but you may burst into tears over nothing. Take the time off. You will need it more than you may think. And there will always be those that will be cleaning house, baking a cake and cutting the grass the next week, putting us all to shame, lol..
  20. I'd take the loose skin any day of the week over weighing 373 lbs again. ANY FRICKIN' DAY!! However, mine did drive me nuts after awhile (it was easy to hide, but *I* knew it was there...), so I had it removed. Poof! Gone.

Post Op Return to work question

I had surgery Tuesday and was back to work Monday. I also work from home at a very idle desk job. By then I had very little pain or discomfort, but I was extremely tired. I had to take frequent breaks to rest, and took a nap after work every single day for at least the first week, maybe even a little longer. If your schedule/work load allows for a good bit of flexibility where you can step away and rest when needed, then you should be fine to go back pretty quickly. But if you have to keep a more rigid schedule, I would suggest taking a few extra days. And, as others have mentioned, those first few weeks getting in your fluids and protein will be a full time job, so make sure you have the mental capacity to focus on that.
  22. I have a "mostly" desk job, that could easily be made a 100% desk job. I took 4 weeks off but went back @ 3 weeks part time, then by week 5 I was back to working normal hours at my normal efficiency but by the end of the day I was more tired than normal. With that being said, by day 4/5 post op I was able to do just about anything except walk very long distances. I could bend, sit, lay, stand. I was doing small things around the house, going for short walks. Also, being lazy and doing nothing. So, based on my experience I could probably work from home strictly on the computer after a week post op. Everyone is different though, just listen to your body and do what you can. My employer bends over backwards for me and basically let me come back at my own pace. Maybe you could try it out for a day or 2 and then if needed take a few more days off and try again? If your employer would be willing to work with you in such a manor.

Post Op Return to work question

I work a desk job, and wound up taking 2 weeks off fully, and another week of half days. While the job is not strenuous physically, it is mentally taxing and I would have struggled taking on a full load immediately. I would not underestimate how physically taxing surgery can be on the body, while you are healing. I didn't have much pain, but I was physically exhausted and needed daily naps for the first month or so after surgery. You are also eating so little that concentrating on complex tasks can be tough. I will say, keeping to the schedule needed to get all my fluids and protein felt like a full time job the first few weeks, and it did actually get tougher once I started working FT again, even from home. For example, once I got back to work, I had to worry about timing my puree stage snacks and meals with phone calls, etc. I would give yourself some grace. Maybe plan on two weeks off, but discuss with your job that it's possible you may return early - or may need more time. I think imbedding some flexibility into your plans is helpful. I originally planned on 2 weeks off, but was still so tired that the 3rd week I decided to do half days. I'd already prepped by job for the possibility and it made it easy. Honestly, everyone's recovery is different, so it's just smart in general to not count on being back to full strength. And if you are one of those that bounces back easily - great! I'm guessing your job wouldn't say no to you coming back early.

Post Op Return to work question

I took 5 weeks but I have an active job. When I got out of the Hospital, I couldn’t drive for a week. Depending on how your doctor does your discharge instructions, you won’t feel like doing much for at least a week or so. When I was on the liquid diet, I was setting my phone timer every 15 minutes to drink liquids such as protein shakes from a medicine cup. That will take up your whole day. When you get to Puréed it will be more flexible

Congratulations!!!🎉🍾🎈🎊 to you . And best wishes on your journey! my experience has been similar. This is without a doubt one of the best things I have EVER done for myself! fourteen days post op and I feel like I’m 25 years younger (I’m 67). dr. Pilati (WakeMed) ordered my meds 3 weeks prior to surgery. My hospital experience could not have been more amazing! Anti nausea patch, nerve block on both sides of abdomen, non narcotic pain meds one hour prior to surgery: I NEVER needed any pain meds. Nerve block lasted 3 days. No gas, just nausea and I was immediately given a steroid/anti nausea cocktail (decadron) that was a miracle drug. My bp is normally 156/99….in the hospital it was 188/96. This morning at my pcp visit it was 104/65! My bp meds have been halved. I’ve been on them for 22 years since my twins were born…post partum hypertension. I start puréed foods tomorrow. I am perfectly satisfied right now on liquids. I’m not hungry, I am down 23 lbs, I feel fabulous. Right now, I am remembering how little food mattered to me most of my life and I am ecstatic. I wish that everyone could have the same experience I’m having. this is life changing.
