  1. So update on the whole process: After speaking with the Doctor and her Medical assistants we decided to go ahead and submit the claim (they never had to deal with submitting paperwork for a revision; only brand new patients). According to my Ins. for revisions a claim only needs the documentation showing that the band malfunctioned and not because of the patient. So we went ahead and did that with out submitting all the goodies that is normally required like 8 week weight loss and 5 year history and psych eval and they DENIED IT! Which believe it or not is GOOD news because they came back and said they are not requiring the 5 year morbid obesity requirement because of the documentation for the emergency removal. Of course my doctor did have to go to bat for me. She had to have a peer-to-peer review to justify the medical necessity. Got the call from my doc yesterday stating all I need now to get my claim approved is 8 week commercially recognized weight lost program and pysch eval. I'm kinda stoked about it and in shock that I can forgo the 5 year proof. Just need to keep my fingers crossed and good vibes until I get the surgery. Side note: Determination and persistence pays off. This was really uncharted waters for my doctors office. Be proactive and call the ins company, get the medical coverage guidelines, basically do their job along side them. Something could go missed. In my case the girls at the office had the wrong medical coverage guideline. That made the difference in the type of surgery I was covered for. Do your homework and also follow up with the insurance company after a pre cert or claim is filed.
  2. I was denied for revision surgery back in October and am currently in the middle of a 6 month diet. I contacted Lindstom and they said I had a good chance to overturn my original denial and I should start fighting now. I am excited and hope they can help me get insurance approval for band removal and conversion to bypass. Anyone else have experience using them?
  3. I'm looking for anyone who has had a revision or someone who has had a sleeve and lives in Lancaster pa. My surgery will be on March 28th,2016. I'm excited and the good thing is that I know what to expect after wards because I had the gastric bypass in2003. I'm scared because there are serious complications that could arise BUT I believe that everything happens for a reason and somehow I'm going to help others who have give through a gastric bypass reversal and creation of a gastric sleeve. I would love to hear some support. Blessings Sent from my LGLS660 using the BariatricPal App

i know people who've had revisions if they've lost too much. If you don't lose enough some have had their sleeves re-trimmed.

    RYGB reversal/revision into sleeve

Best wishes and keep us posted. My sleeve surgery is a few days after u. I'm having revision from band to sleeve..
  6. I've exceeded my surgeon's average estimated weight loss (60-70% of total excess weight) by about 50 pounds. In fact, I had exceeded it by my 3-month follow-up appointment... what can I say, I've always been an overachiever. I'm 5'2", and I had initially set my personal goal at 145, which would have still put me in the "overweight" category, but it was the lowest I could mentally wrap my mind around weighing. I revised down to 135 (right at the top of the "normal" range) once I realized that I'd easily get down to 145. Then I revised again to 125. I'm down to 116.5 at the moment, and my goal for maintenance is to stay somewhere in the range between 115 and 125.

    RYGB reversal/revision into sleeve

Wow. You are the first person I've ever heard of revising from RNY to VSG. In fact, I think you are the first person I've ever heard of having their RNY reversed. I know they say that RNY is reversible and that's one of the reasons some people choose it over sleeve in the first place (since sleeve clearly isn't reversible), but I'd never heard of it actually being done! I am very curious to hear more about how your journey goes. I hope that you can be successful with your sleeve!
  8. THX My Dr. just advised that RNY is the only way he could revise my VBG, due to unable to make a sleeve without causing spots with low blood flow. I am expecting to get surgery in about 6 week and exited to get rid of this bad and all the crap I have put up with.
  9. I had my initial RYGB in September of 2003. My highest weight I was around 385. In the course of the first year I went down to 200 lbs. I was so excited and I thought I had found the magic pill and that I would keep losing. I platitude and then got pregnant with my son. The years later I had my daughter. For the next few years I went up and down between 240-275. I began to have complications and in and out of hospitals. I had a perforated ulcer, a hernia and small revisions to my pouch. Trimming down helped a little then I had more ulcers. Always in the same spot where the main connection to the pouch. Finally after a lengthy FMLA I lost my job and stayed immobile because of the pain of ulcers. My surgeon and I decided that the option of revision would be my best way to get back into a healthy more productive quality of life. My surgery is set for March 28,2016. The surgery will reverse the gastric bypass and then the get will create the gastric sleeve and remove any scarring and my stomach remains. I will post more after the surgery. SLEEVE TO BYPASS REVISION

@@nailsbyniki yes I'm so miserable I've just finished my pre-admission testing this post Monday on the 7th of March and is being revised on March 16th.... I'm praying for a better outcome from this surgery especially getting some relief from this darn GERDS
  12. Yes I had the revision, but lately I have found that water bombing helps to restart your sleeve, pouch regardless of its size you should consider this before further surgery, just google water bombing for dummies.
  13. Please keep in touch and let me know how things go. I'm barely 1 month post-op revision and I'm down 19.2 pounds and am eating normally - normally for post-op WLS anyways... Feel free to message me

    #AskDrIllan

Hi Dr Illan, I may have asked you this but when you do a sleeve revision to mini bypass, do you re-do the stretched sleeve to make it small again? Or just the bypass part?

    Expected Weight Loss

That's great!!! I feel the same way. I am 6 weeks out and only down 15lbs. I thought I would drop 20 like nothing. I started at 215lbs, so I figured I may lose slower. Hoping by the 2 month mark I can be down 20lbs. If I can average 10lbs a month I will feel secure in my weight loss! You won't average 10 pounds a month with a starting weight of 215. You are setting yourself up for disappointment if expect to lose that much that consistently. You may average 10 pounds for the first 2-3 months, but it will slow way down as you get closer to your goal. I was down to losing about 2 pounds a month towards the end there. I totally understand that. That is what I meant... since I am smaller in weight I would not lose as fast... within 5-6 months, 40 lbs is amazing.. I know eventually (and even now) it will be very minimal and slow. Like I said I am only down 15lbs since January 25th. 10 of those were lost in the first 3 weeks and the other 5 have been lost in the 4th and 5th week. Nothing at all for this 6th week! Okay, good! Glad you understand. I see so many posts on here from people who really do expect to lose 10-20 pounds a month, month after month, all the way down to their goal and I worry about those people being really down on themselves when that doesn't happen. The message I really want EVERYONE to understand is that the rate of loss doesn't matter AT ALL. As long as the scale keeps trending downward, you will eventually get to your goal. And 10 years from now, when you are living your happy, healthy life, you aren't going to be looking back thinking "Damnit! If only I'd reached goal two months earlier!" It truly does not matter! Exactly!!!! As long as it keeps going down I am happy! I am a revision from lapband, so I know how this all works and I personally like to set small goals for myself. As of right now I am just wanting to get into Onederland! Then 190 is my goal for now... that was my pregnancy starting weight that has taken me a year to get off the weight! I started at 235lbs back in November before I had to lose weight for surgery. So all together of course I am happy to be down 35 lbs total so far!!!

    Helping the MD's!

My own personal experience was that specific, ongoing and comprehensive education was a key success factor. When I was banded didn't get clear education on how to manage food and I was often hungry but would vomit too easily eating dense Protein...so I gravitated towards sliders. When I revised to sleeve I specifically sought out a program that had what I knew I missed and have been very successful and maintaining too. I was very motivated both times, and had very different outcomes. I understand there are emotional, psychological issues at play too, but it it was a good procedure that initially limited my quantity capacity and hunger...and then the education over the long haul of how to keep"working the sleeve" were much more important in my case. It seems hard to believe but one of the reasons I always failed at weight management was my all consuming drive to eat, my 24/7 hunger. Once that was reduced, it became much more possible to be compliant.

I have failed my band - SUPPORT GROUP

I also have these issues....no metabolism, ugh! Banded in 07 245pds, current 215pds. I have a spinal cord injury and can't exercise with meaning!! If i eat 800/900 cals a day, I store and do not lose. If I up to 1200+/- I lose at a rate of about 1 pound every couple months. I stall for 6-8 month intervals. How is the revision? Sent from my SM-G900R4 using the BariatricPal App
  22. I would like to know how the revisions are going? We have the Protein items in Maine that you are using Banded... I love each I have tried, except the broc cheddar Soup I thought was nasty.... I need to try the lemon!

Long Term Results of Sleeve Gastrectomy

The problem with data, it is often wrong. I don't know how to fix that. Examples are cause of death on death certs - I was shocked to see my mother's because yes her heart and lungs failed and so she died of pulomonary disease (don't recall exactly how it was worded) but that was not the underlying condition. I have no way of knowing if average EWL of 60, 70 percent at 5 years is accurate, but my gut tells me it's in the ballpark based on people I know. You are right that those numbers will include people with bad side effects. It took me a long time to figure out why lap band results were so much better than the circle of people I knew for 10 years, all banded in a few years..then the explanation hit me. One, i think newer bands may have better results but more importantly, it you are measuring excess weight loss, it doesn't matter if that band was removed. The most successful banded person I knew in real life (maintained at goal for a long time) revised to sleeve after complication developed but before regain. My band surgeon followed results via annual survey which included removal. Anyway, the stats aren't the whole story, and you do have to be careful about assuming that just because a particular procedure is 70percent that you personally will lose 70percent of excess weight. It just doesn't work that way - but it's the best info we have. Sent from my KFJWI using the BariatricPal App
