    Going crazy on pre-op diet

EAS is a great brand, I just bought some shakes at Walmart, but the powder can be found at Costco or Target. Super High Protein, low carb. some of things I am drinking right now, are 100% natural juices ie: apple, grapefruit, cranberry, grape, orange. Diet Swiss Miss hot chocolate (with water), yogurt, apple sauce (I know its more of a puree but it helps with the hunger) Low Sodium Bouillion, minute made canned juice in light flavors (very nummy, no sugar) Breyers real fruit ice pops (my favorite is the lime). crystal light, no sugar Kool-aid, Sugar Free Jello, unsweetened tea (very small amount) Anything with high fructose corn syrup goes back on the store shelves. Good Luck on the Liquid diet, my first day was today and already cheated. Argh!
  2. I do have trouble eating things that are good for me. I've had my band for almost 2 years now, and I've never really progressed out of the mushy phase. meat of any kind makes me throw up about 80% of the time, can't even think of eating things like apples. Bread, Pasta and rice are absolute no-go. What I wouldn't give for a chicken sandwich... I basically live on soup, salad and oatmeal. They can't quite figure out what the problem is with me. The band isn't too tight and my food isn't getting stuck, it just makes me so nauseated that it sends me running to the sink with the first bite. Some days it's so bad that even liquids make me hurl. It's true though, the crap foods generally will stay down somewhat better than the good foods, and you get to a point where you're so hungry, you eat whatever you can. It's not that I live on pizza and burgers, because no way they would stay down, but the less obvious crap foods like crackers, melba toast , mashed potatoes, spaghetti sauce, yogurt, gallons of crystal light and other foods which may not scream badness, but really aren't meant to make up the bulk of a diet either. They're not filling foods so I'm always hungry, but the filling foods won't stay down. Then out of the blue, I'll have a day or two where anything goes down in any quantity. On those days I'm almost normal and try to get some Protein into me in the form of chili, meatballs or fish. I still won't tempt fate with trying larger cuts of meat, breads or crunchy veggies as I'm pretty sure they still wouldn't stay down. Everybody is different and you can't really predict these things before your band goes in. You may luck out and be able to eat anything, or you may end up hypersensitive like me. I will likely end up revising to another WLS, but I'm still glad I went the band route first as the least invasive alternative.
  3. Thanks k8! It's an old nickname from college and yes...my eyes are blue. I started my pre-op diet last wednesday (2 weeks prior). It's about the same: 3 protien shakes, 1/2 oatmeal, 1 sugar-free Jello and 1 pudding,1 fat free yogurt, and 1 unsweetened applesauce. No caffeine and no soda. As for the chart, it's pretty simple to put in the tracker. Just go to TickerFactory.com to customize your weight loss tracker. It will give you the code to use for web forums and blogs. Copy this information and then go to Profile>Change Signature and add the code in the Edit Signature block. Let me know how it goes. Keep in touch. It would be great to have someone to talk to as we go through day by day.

    three's a crowd

Wow, that is a problem. . and it could potentially cause a problem. Have you both literally sat down and discussed this? I mean the sleeve is a very restrictive tool and if your relationship with your hubbie revolves around food, well . . that may be a stickler. . . HOWEVER! if that is what y'all do, then once you come into eating food again, you don't have to stop all together. . you still can enjoy your Proteins (bbq) you still can enjoy your eating out (not as much mind you, but you can still go) you can rejoice your milestones (yogurt, Jello, popsicles, all sugarfree of course) and you can choose smart choices as well. . . just remember that this is a very restrictive tool and after 2 or 3 bites you'll be done. . . but this is something you and hubbie have to discuss in length. . . whatever you do DONT do it behind his back, have him involved all the way. . . discuss his fear too. . . this is usually why men don't want us to do this, something is scaring them, especially the part of "your going to lose the weight and leave me" They are SOOOOOOO paranoid about that. . . men are incredibly insecure about this when it comes to that. . . so sit down and discuss this. . . definately not worth break up over though. . . just my two cents worth

    Pre-Op Practice Eating

Kimaly, I'm scheduled for July 22, also! And, I'm working on smaller portions, not drinking with food, chewing well, eating better foods, and eating soft foods - yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. The chewing well is probably the hardest right now. It is a little startling to realize how fast I can put food down! Ouch! I am also liking the fact that I really do feel better when I drink enough water! And, the craving for my caffiene soda is going away. I still salivate when I hear Hubby open a new bottle, though!
  6. Here are some suggestions of foods you see on "healthy food lists": Chobani Fruited Greek Yogurt for breakfast (with added protein powder), Occational Whey Protein shake made with Fat Free Milk, Fruit or string cheese for afternoon snack, Lean Cuisine for lunch, Grillled/Baked Chicken breast, Turkey Chili, Hummus and carrots, Egg Whites/egg beaters, Fish, Apples, oranges. Just incase you hit writers block!
  7. women's one a day has Iron, you want to get about 18 mg/day (at least for men presume same for women). Forget cleanses, that will happen if you change diet. You want to reduce fat to make liver smaller so they can move it to get to stomach. At least use 2% milk or fat free, same with cottage cheese and there is even fat free cheese but at least change to low fat dairy. Wheat bread instead of white bread. More chicken, fish, turkey (white meats less in fat) keep some red for iron and other benefits. Vitamins - B12 is also important for anemia, do not get B complex very little if any B in them and you want B12 and B1. Cut down on juices and sugar in coffee in fact you should reduce caffeine so you can get used to it after surgery when you will initially be on herbal tea. You will be able to go back to coffee but surgeons usually want stomach to heal and best to reduce to lower risk of ulcers - smaller stomach you have to protect it. Find a Protein mix you like for shakes, you can use milk instead of Water and putting in half banana gives the vanilla some flavor and body. Protein important after surgery as rapid weight loss will cause you to lose protein and muscle mass as well as the fat. Exercise - do some resistance (weight) training to build muscle, you will need it. building muscle will help fill arms to reduce sagging skin. Biotin is supposed to be good for hair loss, usually comes in around month 3 postop. Beware of buying lots of clothes, just buy a little at at time as you will undergrow them quickly and have to keep replacing - may want to shop at goodwill and save money. I leveled off at month 4-5. Don't fret over stalls, they will happen and remember you will only lose 50% of excess over course of year. If you weigh 200 ideal for you height is 120, you can expect to lose 50% of 80 pound excess or 40 pounds. Walking good, took about 3 weeks to get back to gym and 3 weeks after that to get stamina/endurance back to last for an hour or so training. You mentioned yogurt - use either low fat or switch to greek which is higher in protein. Again, probiotic and cleanses probably not necessary but talk with doctor. After surgery for about 6 weeks you will need to avoid things with seeds, like strawberries and things that could lodge into open wound inside of stomach until it heals, after that period you are pretty much open to eat normally. I was on solids in week three, just chewed a lot. Learn to eat slowly over a longer period, yes your food will get cold but you are going to have to get used to that also.
  8. today was the first day of my pre-op diet. had my first one at around 7:24-8am, i tried the chocolate HMR 800 protein shake powder my nutritionist gave and used the recipie she gave me and it made me sick to my stomach! but an hour later i started to feel better and around 9am. 9:15 i walked a mile had 20oz of water and between 10 and 11 i had a sugar free popsicle then around 11:30 i cleaned out my mom's car and it was sort of hot out but not sunny, and i sweat quiet a bit, it took like an hour to finish cleaning the car. around 12:30pm i had my 2nd protein shake with the recipie my nutritionist gave me it was kind of like pumpkin pie, it was ok. had another popsicle around one something, cottage cheese around 3:40pm,3rd protein shake around 4, (drank diet snapple after and before) going to have a yogurt eventhough i already had cottage cheese, the only other option is fruit juices or vegetable juices and i dont have either. and then around 7ish ill have my last protein shake blaghh! total cals: 890 total grams of protein: 83g i already planned tomorrow out and the total cal is 900 and total protein is 86g going to walk 1.10miles(going to increase that by 10 everyday) and going to play the wii fit or DDR for an hour. might do some strength/resistance or some endurance/aerobic exercises too...wow im actually excited lol

Just got approved for the sleeve

congrats Lauren and good luck. For me after surgery I had my protein shakes on hand, sugar free jello, pudding, Popsicles. Soup and yogurt. Also I dealt with bad knee pain and since my surgery 6/18 and losing 27 lbs what a difference. And boy it feels good.
  10. This Friday July 20th I start my pre-op diet but it's not an all liquid one. I can eat yogurt and cottage cheese and lean meats and of course protein shakes. Is there any advice that any of you can give me to get me through these next 2 weeks.

    Need food suggestions!

Go here: http://www.vitalady.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?search=action&keywords=protsamp&SortKey=sku&SortOrder=ascending It has samples for $2.99 each of most of the major favorites like nectar 100%, BSN Desserts, etc. and just pick some flavors you think you will like, pay $5 for shipping and you can figure out which ones work for you. BUT, don't try them until after surgery, we aren't kidding when we say your taste buds will change! I didn't like anything from unjury..ick! I use IsoPure unflavored when I need to and in tomato Soup it was pretty good. I prefer actual shakes though. You can also try the IsoPure pre-mixed bottles at GNC or The Vitamin Shoppe but those never worked for me. They are fruity and very thin so I can see why some people like them. I usually added greek yogurt, sometimes frozen fruit, PB2, etc. to my shakes to change them up. Good luck!
  12. So, I have not officially started my pre-op diet yet. That will start on Dec. 28 with surgery on Jan 7th. But here is my question... I have been trying REALLY hard to lose some weight prior to surgery with no success. I have been doing basically the slim fast plan... a shake for breakfast, another for lunch and sensible dinner plus 2 snacks (I usually do a yogurt or a piece of fruit) Is Slim Fast too high in sugar or something? I am not losing anything! Now I'm starting to get nervous! What if I go through with this whole surgery for no reason? It seems like I should be loosing some weight doing this. It has been 2 weeks! What do you all think? Maybe I should just follow the pre-op liver shrinking diet starting now, or would 3 weeks be too much?

    taking pills after surgery

Your Dr will tell you what meds you should continue, or discontinue for a few days. Mine said if they are smaller than a pinky nail you could swallow them. But I chose to crush mine just to be safe. I crushed them and put in a spoonful of pudding or yogurt.
  14. I'm on antibiotics for H. pylori and my surgery is this Thursday. They made me incredibly sick until my doctor allowed me to take them with yogurt. I haven't had any issues since. Thank god

    Day Before Surgery...

The only thing I had the day before was a Greek Yogurt.
  16. vanessabalderas

What Is Your Pre Op Diet?

I am allowed 4-5 shakes a day, up to 900 calories. The shakes are through Bariatric Advantage and I can mix in fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, and skim milk but cannot eat any of those foods alone - strictly shakes

    I'm hungry

Hi Erin, well that is a good thing actually. You have been so sick it is good to hear that you are hungry. Are you still in the liquid stage or are you in the mushies? If I remember right you are in full liquids. You can eat the potatoe soup you were talking about or any kind of broth and probably pudding and yogurt now. You definitely need to start putting something on your stomach now.

  19. Could I have aggrevated my esophogas and stomach from my pbing yesterday? I cannot tell if I actually have post nasal drip or am just feeling this way from the pb. Anyhow, managed to drink 18 oz. of tea this morning sipping from 7:30 a.m.- 11:00 a.m. wasn't hungry until about 12:00 p.m. and tried one spoonful of yogurt that caused major gurgling, so I waited until 2:00 p.m. to have the broth from wonton Soup and just the broth, which I could only take in 1/2 cup without feeling intense gurgling. I have tried sipping on some green ice tea over the past hour and recently it just all came up. Just pure liquid... I am worried about dehydration even though I feel fine now. I am also worried about what to do since the dr. office is closed. Anyone have any advice to get me thru the night?????? This has never happened to me. I heard that slips would cause major pain and I don't feel anything but gurglly bubbles moving in my esophagus.

    Yogurt!

I prefer Chobani Greek yogurt. During mushies I used a hand blender to mince the fruit. Also splendra helps with the sourness. Make sure to get 0 or 2%, some brands are full fat!

    Yogurt!

I found the Fage Greek Fat Free yogurt to have the lowest Carbs and calories with the highest protein content of them all.
  23. I was banded Dec. 19. I had a 2 week pre op diet. I went off it once, 4 days before surgery. I was at a holiday party. Everything looked so delicious, especially after not eating for a week and a half. I took a small sized plate, took the healthiest food I could find at the party and ate. Oh man did it taste good. It wasn't much. 1 piece of chicken and a few bites of a side. As soon as I was done eating it I was back to my diet. I still lost 13 pounds on my pre op diet and my liver was healthy for surgery. Now I am on liquid only (plus yogurt, sf ice pops pudding) post op diet for 2 weeks. Last night the Christmas Eve dinner looked delicious, but I had no desire to join in. Today, I wanted a piece of shrimp but it was so easy not to cave. I know I went through a surgery to lose weight and I don't want to mess that up. I am also not very hungry lately, maybe its the swelling from surgery, maybe it's being used to the low calorie no chewing diet. But it is soooo much easier. I see foods I love but it is easy to pass them up.
  24. Long story short, I needed to lose 10 pounds in 10 days and ... I lost 12.5. My surgery date is set on January 16th. Thanks for all the emotional support and tips you guys shared. So-- for those nearing their weigh in appointment, I can share what I did, hopefully it would work out for you as well. 1. I bought a good old Rubbermaid pitcher with 64oz measurement on the side to force myself to drink it and used one packet crystal light for flavor. Drank this all say long at work (10 hours) . Drink Water to curb appetite! 2. I used Crystal light ENERGY ( with caffeine, coz I gave up my espresso, and can't deal with headaches) Got myself peach mango, grape, wild strawberry and citrus flavors to make it more appealing. 3. Breakfast :Greek yogurt small only 4. Lunch: Tofu mashed with 1 scrambled egg- looks like a pancake when cooked 5. Boiled egg for snack when I am hungry, upto 2 eggs/day. 6. dinner is I cup sautéed Brussels sprout. Or 1 bar zone double dark chocolate 7. I used costco premier Protein drink 30 grams protein) occasionally to substitute a meal. And when I am really really hungry around midnight. 8. Elliptical machine 30 mins & dancing wii (just dance) 30 mins everyday. I walk a lot at work and take stairs instead of elevator. Park far to force myself to work. Basically trying to burn calories if I can. 9. Dry sauna for 5 days before my appointment. 10. Looked at my calories, weighed everyday and logged what I ate at myfitnesspal app. Meeting the goal weight is too important for me to mess up on so I really forced myself to take it seriously. *So that's it! i just want to share -- take it or leave it Everyone's different so I wish us all good luck On our weight loss journey. Hope these tips will help you as well.

    i cheated!!

Add a little Greek yogurt for some extra Protein, and it will thin them some too. I ate them on full liquids, which I'm still on, only about 2 TB, when my husband and I went to Ninfa's in Houston. I ate a little of his. They are very thin there and went down easy. I squished them to make sure, but they were fine. I bought a can and did what you did, added a little cheese and yogurt too. I ate just a little. I did feel guilty, like I cheated, but I think they sat heavy with me, but it may have been all in my head.
