Bought two new pieces of clothing so far. What about you?
Sosewsue61 replied to Creekimp13's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Unless your budget is really really tight, I highly recommend getting smaller clothes as you go - because we have body dysmorphia and we fail to recognize/appreciate when we lose weight. It makes a big difference, it really does - it honors your hard work. If I put on my fat clothes, I feel fatter and like nothing is changing, if I put on those smaller fitted clothes I notice it a lot more and feel better. I especially like wearing a spanx camisole bra, a shirt that fits, and my skinny jeans from AE. Oh yeah!!! As opposed to my 2x pjs which make me feel that large. -
After much thought and deliberation; i am now seriously considering the lap band. I was skinny throughout childhood and as a young adult, i think i started putting weight on in my early twenties. I never really thought much about it. I have an amazing husband who sees beyond the lbs and sees me for who i really am. I think I've always been in denial. I think i still look in the mirror and see the person who is only 120 lbs and not 270 lbs; really, i know, i'm in denial............ I am not scared to do the surgery, however i'm scared of the new life that comes with it; the WILLPOWER to change things, cause face it, obviously that is why i am where i am; i haven't been able to stick to a diet EVER! I also realize that I need to do this; i have sleep apnea and i'm sure as the years go on, i will only become heavier. I know my husband wants the OLD me back and i've been unfair to him; this is not the girl he married and he doesn't deserve me the way i am...i know he would love me no matter what, but i'm sure this is not what he bargained for. I don't know how i'm going to cope and actually go ahead with this but I know i have no choice and i guess the sooner i come to grips with the harsh reality of being overweight, then the sooner i can get my life back on track and get healthy. Yippee for 2/7/2011 and a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to you for doing it ! Ignore those people for they know not what they say! People are creatures of habits and one of those habits is to make others miserable the same why as they are. . . so just say ya i guess and carry on. . . but just wait til you start losing weight. . . then you'll be able to say "Yeah thanks and see, I'm not even dead yet". . . good luck your going to do fabulous. . .

I too told no one except my wife (of course). I was worried about naysayers, especially my family. My older brother and sister both had bypass surgery. My sister lost all the weight she wanted and then developed a heart condition (probably hereditary, our mom had the same thing), so she gained the weight back and has nothing but horror stories and complaints about her experience. My brother is having problems too, the bypass he had works by not only limiting the amount of food but also by malabsorption of nutrients - the "bypass" bypassed a length of his small intestine and he there could not absorb the nutrients and therefore would not gain weight by the food he ate. Well the body is adjusting and the malabsorption is no longer working, he has to severely limit his calories, which is "killing" him he says. He has bouts of hunger and struggles to keep the weight off, and SOME nutrients are still not absorbed right, he takes multiple Vitamins a day just to make up the shortfall. BTW, both spent TENS of thousands on their surgeries, which really miffs them now as they are still struggling to loose weight or at least not get any fatter. Well, long story short I didn't want anyone to talk me out of it, or worse yet try and convince my wife to try and convince ME not to do it. I spent only $5000 for self pay and so far 6+ weeks in I'm 65 lbs down and feeling pretty good. Regardless of my sad story, do what YOU feel is right, you did right by coming here as there are tons of people that are going through or went through the SAME thing you are. Keep the faith, it WILL work out.

@@taweedeegirl because the insurance wont round my BMI of 39.5 to 40 for years 2013-2014 and according to BSBC federal, I have to be of 40 BMI or greater (with no comordities). So Bluepoint has to submit my weight from 2014 and 2015 at the beginning of 2016. It's so frustrating....

Weight gain during 6 month pre-op period
SusieQ2019 replied to DanieHall's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Aetna and I read somewhere here that they denied some who gained weight. My doctor did not say anything about loosing but the nurse was happy that I lost 1lb in my last vist but so far I've lost 5lbs. My insurance ask for 4 doctors visit and 3 nutritionist visit. I am keeping it on the safe side to at least loose a few lbs. Check with your surgeon to be sure. -
Weight gain during 6 month pre-op period
DanieHall replied to DanieHall's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I just verified that my insurance doesn’t have a minimum loss over the 6 months (whew!) but I need to have lost some weight. I wish I only had to deal with this for 3 months that would have been awesome! :) -

It can cause the issues. Something about losing weight quickly. I know someone on here can answer your question in more detail than that, but that's what I've heard.

Last week I called the insurance company every day (one day I even called twice at the suggestion of the first ins rep I spoke to - didn't make a difference ... ) They kept telling me that they have 30 days to respond to an appeal. So, my dr's office and I thought that meant we'd have an answer by August 31. Even the insurance reps I was speaking to were saying the 31st.. However we came to find out that it's 30 business days, not 30 calendar days, which would make it September 14th. I called today , not that I thought I'd get an answer, but you never know. Today they told me that they have to answer by the 7th. So with the 7th being Labor day, I should have an answer by the 8th. I've rescheduled the surgery for the 28th of this month in the hopes, again, that I'll be approved. So, I'll keep my fingers crossed that I get good news on Tuesday. Pindoctor - so glad your approval came through in time for your procedure. Having to reschedule is a pain in the butt! Jelly - I know someone who used ankle weights under her clothes when she went to weigh in. I work with her husband and he's brought it up several times. Talk about frustrating! Not something I want to hear. And, I think she's lost around 30 - 35 lbs and considers herself to be at her goal weight. Yep, annoying!

Oy. *sigh* How to explain postop diet?
KathyM replied to anonynurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am with you, I am not ashamed of having the sleeve done but it feels very personal and private to me. Even when people ask me how I have lost weight, I have to be careful about what I say so it doesn't get repeated. I have shared with people who I really thought it could help, but if I wanted my whole town to know I would take out an ad in the local newspaper. It is my body and my weight struggle has been a very long and painful one, and I really want my privacy with regards to it. My mother recently came for a visit, she had not seen me since I had the sleeve done and she doesn't know that I did it. I busied myself playing hostess and cooking alot for family, and no one really paid that much attention (much to my relief) what or how much I was eating. I have been thinking about your delimma and I think if it were me, I might tell them that I am working at losing weight (not a lie) and for right now, I am just doing a liquid portion of a diet (also not a lie). Hopefully they will respect your privacy and not pry too much. Keep us posted how it goes. I have found that eating around other people can be stressful, especially when you are at a restaurant and when your order arrives, you can tell that you will only be able to eat a few bites of it. I have gotten pretty clever at pushing the food around on my plate so it looks like I have eaten more than I have Try not to worry too much, it will all work out Kathy -

Hi all! I'm getting sleeved on February 10th (next Wednesday) I as I'm sure a lot of you did, looking through blogs and posts trying to gather info on the most successful people's journey. I have never really had much issue losing weight in the past. It is keeping it off and then adding 50 lbs to that which is my trouble. I would like some advice from anyone willingness to give it. I have set a goal post op of 600-800 calories a day with 80g Protein and 30-40g carbs with low fat. I've been trying to follow this for about 3 weeks now just to get in the swing of things and I find it near IMPOSSIBLE to keep my carbs under 50g's. I'm eating extremely well. The carbs are all coming from fruit and veg. What the heck am I supposed to do?!?! Any tips??

Hi there! Glad to hear you are well on your way. I'm still waiting for my first consult with the surgeon (Sept 11). I also have BCBS. Did you get a checklist of what they require? I know it varies from state to state but was wondering what yours requires. I've heard of some people who have BCBS who have to do a dr supervised diet for six months plus a lot of other things but I think mine is more simple, according to what I read about my plan. Hopefully you wont have to jump through any hoops and you get your surgery soon! height : 5 ft, weight: 270, BMI: 53 Cant wait to get sleeved!

Aren't you all nice to post to my thread! Thanks as far as insurance goes, my Nurse Pract. told me they would handle the insurance stuff. She had me send my last 5 years of recorded weight history from my pcp. So of course, I called right away and had them fax it to her. Hope she got it!! I did call BCBS and they said the surgery VSG is covered under my plan, but that I needed a written letter from my PCP stating my attempts at losing weight and his opinion for medical necessity. So he typed it up and gave it to me and I brought it to my consult appt. I hope that is all they need, but I suppose I'll have to wait and see. So on to this battle to lose 10 lbs before surgery date. I am trying to change my eating habits (low carb, low sugar, low calorie) - I've increased my Water intake (really increased it!) and I'm trying to not drink with meals and chew slowly. This is a hard concept to put into practice, I must say. There are times in work when I am soo hungry. I truly think this is the worst of it - the pre op phase. I wish I could jump to the liquid 2 week before surgery time right now. So I'll let you know what happens by the end of this week, as I plan to call Lahey by Thursday to see if the surgery date has been set up and if they have moved on with the insurance stuff. Thanks everyone!

I hope there is not any hoops for you. I am BCBS and had to do 3 mon pcp diet monitor ( they basically had to record my weight for 3 mon) and a few other requirements. After I did all of that my vgs drs office told me BCBS was req a 2 yr weight history, had to be over BMI of 35 for 2 or more yrs. I had to wait a few months. Best thing for you to do is call your insurance company if you want to be sure. I wish I had. Nothing I could have done about the 2yr thing but wouldn't have been planning and looking at certain dates and then SURPRISE. Regardless, whether it's soon or 6 months, time will go fast for you!! Good luck and welcome to the life changing party! Keep us updated so we can rejoice with you!

Hello...My name is Sue and I live in Salem, Oregon. I was banded on Nov. 5 2009 at OHSU in Portland. Most important things to remember....my friend. Your only a few weeks out, your body is changing, as well as your thought process. Going from 2.2 cc's to 4 is more than what alot of Doctors are willing to do, so you are ahead of the program. OHSU only goes .5ccs. Make sure you get as much protein as you can daily, at this point I would think at least 50 grams. It helps with your hunger and reduces your bodys stress. I buy UNJURY on line, unjury.com. It is medically the best you can buy and tastes the best also. Go there right now, in fact if you would like I have some unflavored I would give you. Also some Chicken Soup flavor. You can add it to anything to boost the protein. Add it to broth or mashed potatoes, your milk. It can't be added to anything that is over 130 degrees cause it turns grainy, so just heat hot things to that. You should be sipping at all times except 15 minutes before, during, and 15 minutes after eating. Try to fill your stomach with fluids before you sit down to eat. Than take SMALL sips of your protein drink. It should take you at least 15-20 minutes to finish. That way your brain can actually register you ate something. Don't wait so long before meals, you don't want to get to the "hungry as a wild animal" lol. This is NOT a Quick Fix process, you want the weight to come off slow, about 6 lbs. a month. It gives your metabolisum time to reset. MOVE, MOVE MOVE! exercise makes EVERYTHING better! I don't mean to come off as a drill sargent, sorry if you take it that way. But you must take baby steps, your changing your Life Style. Make sure your kind to yourself, be positive in your thinking. Your a good person and this forum is your best connection to people who are or have experienced what you are right now. Use us, we want you to succeed! Blessings, Sue Ps. If you would like to hear more, just let me know. Also OHSU has free classes for lapband, so check out their website.
