  1. I came across your post and I was wondering how your weight loss is coming after having the ESGr? I am having it done in February and I want to have realistic expectations.

Prep recommends... I'm six weeks out

I used to drink Coke Zero all day and night like a 12 pack a day. I quit prior to surgery and really don’t even miss it. I have a little caffeine now but not from soda even though my team says I am medically clear to have it again but they don’t recommend it cause of the correlation with weight gain. I have the premiere protein caffe latte every morning and occasionally I have a crystal light energy if I am feeling tired during the day. Both of those hit me harder energy wise now than a single soda used to. There isn’t anything specific that I needed post op that I wasn’t told to expects. Protein drinks, broths, puree soups, sugar free popsicles, etc. i had a pretty uneventful recovery though. Maybe others will have more to add about that.
  3. Hey all,

I'm new and I'm trying to navigate the site.

I can't seem to put in any info regarding my surgery, weight ect.

Can anyone help. I don't feel I've lost weight since my sleeve 12/22. I didn't stick to the liquid diet.

I was soooo hungry and literally craving everything😔

However my 1st post op visit is 12/4

I'm new here too, waiting for sleeve 2/23. I can't figure out either how to put in weight, etc. I would think Profile would do it, but it doesn't work that way. Has anyone figured out what the secret is?

    Losing 2 pounds a week

yes - normal. The big drops that many of us see initially are mostly "water weight". After my first month, I was losing about 10 lbs a month, give or take. So that's about 2 lbs a week. On top of that, at your weight, you're what we call a "light weight". You're not going to lose as fast as someone who starts out at over 300 lbs.

    Losing 2 pounds a week

Maybe you're a mobile user so you can't see this, but if you fill in your profile with height, weight, etc. it's easier for people to respond to you. 600-800 cals/day with a mini gastric bypass sounds very low, but again, you could be 4 feet 10 and then it might make sense. Remember, at least for the first year or so, depending on food you eat, we malabsorb calories, too. Much more than RNY patients, who malabsorb up to 150-200 cals/day (no specific studies on a calorie amount exists for MGB patients, but it's a lot more than RNY).

    Chickpea "Pasta"

This is good timing that I read this because I just saw the first mention of this two days ago in a YouTube video of some girl's weight loss journey where she talked about chickpea pasta and I hadn't heard of it before. I might give it a try at some point.

Pity Party - Frustrated - Venting!

I can relate. I did great the first year. Then stupid COVID hit and I gained weight, which I had promised myself I would never do again. And I got out of ONEderland, which again I promised myself I'd never do. But I picked myself up, dusted myself off, forgave myself and am starting back with the basics of protein, monitoring/tracking food, water intake, and exercise and the weight is coming off again. The WLS still works! It's a tool that will work as long as I use it.

    Why Are Scales so Fickle?

I do of course realize that scales only measure a specific point in time. And I also of course realize that I shouldn't obsess over a number on a scale or weigh myself multiple times a day. That being said . . . How is it that at 4:30 am I can weigh one thing, then at 6:30 am be 1 pound lighter, than at 8:00 am be 1/2 pound heavier even if I haven't eaten or drank anything? Plus don't even get me started on weighing after a bowel movement . . . my weight actually goes UP! How is that possible? I WANT to weigh just once a week, but I find myself checking the scale every morning as soon as I wake up. Just venting . Anybody else want to throw their scale through the window?😁

    Just a journey

I've just come back to these forums and caught up with your progress. I too am refocusing and starting over. Well, not from scratch, but back to the basics. I started back to the gym on Nov. 22nd and have been 36 out of 41 days since then doing 45-minutes to an hour a day. I started Weight Watchers 3 weeks ago and am actively tracking food and water intake. We can do this!!!!

Bucket lists — where to begin?

That's a good question. Hmmm. BUCKET LIST #1 - maybe write a book about WLS and/or weight loss and dieting in general. Although there are millions of them out there already. Or maybe a blog or Instagram page about it. Dunno. BUCKET LIST #2 - work with a personal trainer to define my arms into muscle and toned biceps. BUCKET LIST #3 - maybe buy a piece of gym equipment for at-home use to get extra workouts and activity throughout the day during "down" time.

Bucket lists — where to begin?

I always kinda wanted to try that too but was over the weight limit of 250 pounds before.

    Losing 2 pounds a week

2 pounds a week is very sustainable and a good way to ensure the weight will stay off. Your calories sound right in line. I'd be happy with 2 pounds a week. Way to go!

    Do You loose weight slower

For you start weight I think you are doing pretty great. Some will of lost for the amount of time, others may have lost more, its very individual as we are all different. Set realistic goals and celebrate your weight loss so far.

    June Surgeries

That is an amazing loss, you are definitely doing something right! I am also not too focused on weight loss at the moment, or should I say I wasn't - going to get back into it, been giving away all the chocolate and alcohol I was given over Christmas and New Year (I'll admit I did sample some of them 😉) I think I have had one piece of pizza since surgery, potato chips are my weakness but i always measure out a serving - like 14 chips and do not over do it. I'm not a sweet person, very savory and salty is my way to go. Happy New Year

I'm very sorry to hear about your flare up/episode. I hope you are doing better now!! Look after yourself, indulge every now and then and congratz on your weight loss so far!.

    June Surgeries

That's amazing you haven't had any reactions to food, I'm so happy for you! I use to have a protien shake every morning for breakfast but 1. they are starting to make me nauseous (I think the smell not the taste) and 2. I can be lazy haha. Since it's summer where I live the last two weeks or so I have mostly been eating salad based meals. Not much protien which I know is naughty but I tell myself I get enough in all the cheese I eat 🤣. I have quite a few foods that my body no longer tolerates. one is the curried eggs that we only ever get made for us on Christmas day! last year I ate a dozen easy over two days, this year I ate half of one and felt terrible afterwards! Booooo very sad no more eggs. Ah well Oh and congratz on the weight loss! Slow but steady and as long as your not gaining in my eyes is a win!!

    Do You loose weight slower

Nothing wrong with 35lb in two months regardless of the surgery date weight. What had you expected to lose by now? If your surgery date weight was on the lower side or you lost a lot of weight pre surgery you aren't immediately going to see big losses. It would help tailor responses if you filled in your profile data...weight, height etc.

i'm pre-op, for the second time

I too was sleeved but 9yrs ago. I have major Gerd to the point it makes me throw up. I just found out I have a small hiatal hernia. I went for a consult and the surgeon suggested revision to bypass. I lost 100 pounds after being sleeved but have gained about 70 which sucks. How much did you lose and regain? I hope to fix my Gerd but also lose at least 50. I heard it would be a slower processes since I’m still limited when eating.

    Do You loose weight slower

At least your surgeon told you I had to do my own research. Post surgery I came hime from the hospital heavy than I went in and in 2 weeks I had lost almost 25lbs then the 3rd, 4th, 5th no weight loss then the 6th week it started back REALLY slow I’m up to 35lb weight loss was expecting a lot more by now. I’ll keep an eye on it the next couple of weeks if nothing changes I’ll be speaking with my surgeon and my nutritionist immediately! Good luck your just getting started so don’t get discouraged

    Do You loose weight slower

I’ve heard the same thing. My surgeon said because our body has gone thru a weight loss surgery before, so it knows what to expect. I’m trying to remain positive and force myself to be more active in hopes it won’t be true. I’m almost two weeks post op and lost 16 lbs since surgery. I’m sure it’s mostly water weight since I’m still on liquids.
  21. I had revision surgery on Nov.8th sleeve to bypass due to Gerd and a Hiliatal Hernia. After doing some research it suggest that revision patients tend to loose weight at a slower pace than other weight loss patients. Has anyone else heard that? I’ve lost a total of 35lbs since surgery and Tuesday will be 2 months.

    Can eat too much

People say that the restriction sometimes doesn’t kick in until you get past soft foods. Throughout the whole process I was able to eat more than was expected for each stage. I just have to measure my food and eat only what I am supposed to. Now at almost 9 months out I can already eat almost a full serving of things. According to my team this is okay. I reached that a little sooner than most but it doesn’t mean something is wrong or that I did anything wrong. The main thing is to still eat slow and listen for your full cues and to stop when you feel satisfied or when you finish your portion. I should add that I have lost weight on the slower side but I am steadily losing still. I am ten pounds from goal.

    No Pre-OP Diet?

No pre-op other than clear fluids for two days before. They did suggest stopping caffeine prior to surgery. So I did that about a week before. I think starting weight can play in too it as the Clinic I went to does have patients do Optifast, but I did not have to. My starting BMI was just above 36.
  24. Amidoingit

How long from consult to surgery?

3 weeks, but I didn't have to lose weight before surgery. Just the pre-op diet for 2 weeks. Sent from my moto g power using BariatricPal mobile app

    Carnivore Diet

A few points (or counterpoints) on these diets. Any of these restrictive diets can lead to some weight loss for a while, because it takes some time for us to adjust to the restrictions and adapt to overeating the permitted foods. For example, our popular low carb diets of today - the average American/Western diet has 3-400 g of carbohydrates in it, so if you restrict that to some random small number - 40, 20, 20, 10 - it really doesn't matter - that's 1000 calories or more. Even if you eat "as much bacon as you want..." you likely aren't used to eating that much of it so you will be eating fewer calories than before. Until you adapt to that and let you bacon consumption rise to or beyond your previous carbohydrate consumption. Give it a few months. A few years ago I did a low fat diet for a while as we were poking at a specific medical condition where that can be beneficial. Even though I could have as much whole grains and root vegetables (potatoes, carrots, etc.) as I wanted, I wasn't used to eating that much of those things so I lost weight, though that wasn't the intent. If you go back to when the low fat diet fad was at its peak, there were lots of doctors recommending it, and lots of science behind it. What they were missing, as with today's diets, is the "uh oh" of what's missing and how that affects us long term. There are essential nutrients associated with fats that were being missed, just as there is essential nutrition associated with carbohydrates. Back in the day before effective diabetes meds and insulin, that is the way diabetics ate, as that was the only way for them to keep any control over their blood sugar. It wasn't particularly healthy, but it was the only thing that kept them alive with that condition. The science that is touted in promoting these diets tends to be fairly narrow, siting just one or a couple of factors that benefit from the diet, while ignoring the rest of the body's systems. If one has a condition that requires such limitations, then one follows it, but also these days has the help of other specialists, such as RDs, who can help in compensating for what's missing in the diet by adopting other foods or supplements to balance things out. Today's average diet is very high in processed foods which tend to be high in sugar, particularly added sugars and sugar analogs, and we can certainly benefit from cutting those out, but it is easy to go into overkill mode and cut out carbohydrates that provide us with essential nutrition without them going overboard on the free sugars that are doing us harm. Similarly, when low fat was the fad of the day, most people then were overdoing fats - lots of butter, deep fried everything, country gravy on everything, etc. but soft drinks came in 6 oz bottles not big gulp quarts. So they could benefit from lower fat diet - but not no fat as they were deficient in some essential nutrients.
