    Nightline "weigh Less Drink More"

Thanks M2G. It helps to know what others think & their personal experiences. I plan on following Dr's orders as well, and wait a year. It doesn't bother me unless I'm with a group of friends. I can say I had a half pitcher of Crystal Light Margaritas (no alcohol) at my cookout yesterday & it was FA-BU-lous!!!

    Nightline "weigh Less Drink More"

I am a bit unusual because my surgeon's orders were NO DRINKING for one year post-op. And I actually followed that rule. (Broken others, but this one was not hard for me...lol.) So my sleeve was 10-22-10 and on 10-31-11 I had my first drink (at a Halloween party.) So I probably drink about once a month or less, and yes it does it hard and fast, so beware, the tiny tummy doesn't need much alcohol!! About transfer addiction, I guess I can understand it but certainly it seems like something that if you feel predisposed towards something, then there is always help to combat that also. We all make choices, and sometimes the choice is asking for help.

    Water

Yes, it is posible to drink too much water, just like alcohol. There even is an illness called Diabetes Insipidous that is related to drinking too much water. Hope that helps.

    First Fill Today

My first fill (.50 cc) on May 23rd wasn't painful at all! It also didn't offer much restriction. I did notice that my band was tighter in the morning and I could eat about 10-20% less than before, but still a lot of food and still hungry between meals. My nurse measured what I already had and discovered I had 3 cc with surgery and she added .5, so then I had 3.5 cc. I went for my second fill June 11th and it was faster and easier this time and she gave me 1 cc and told me most people "green zone" within 3-5 fills. Now with 4.5 cc after 2 fills I know that there is something inside of me lol I can eat only a happy meal sized portion now and have to wait an hour or so to eat in the morning. I haven't lost more weight yet, though, because of poor decisions like actual happy meals and alcohol and Sobe drinks. My short term goal is to lose 15 lbs and be at 170 by August 1st. Hopefully ill have another fill soon!

No (Or Low) Sugar - Low Carb Protein Bars?

Atkins bars are very low carb. Like 3 carbs per bar. They look like they are high, but what you need to look at is net carbs. The other stuff is stuff like fiber, sugar alcohol, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate, and Glycerine, which have little to no impact on a diet. I learned this from doing the Atkins diet so many time. BTW, they taste good too..

    Caffeine

I hope not. I drink coffee by the gallon. Yeah I know its not good but it sure beats the alcohol habit which I did give up which I used to drink by the gallon too. That's for another thread sometime though.

    Drinking

I've heard it's best to reintroduce alcohol at home as well because some of us will not react well with the new sleeve. I've heard it's common to get drunk off of just a few sips, or get flush and sweaty from the sugar alcohols. Sorry, can't speak from experience -- I don't care much for alcohol so not sure when, if ever, I'll try it again. But women in my support group talk about alcohol ALL THE TIME. Also, remember to count those (empty) calories! Red wine is the best, and measure. Most of us Americans "think" we know a glass of wine, but really the way we pour is more like 2-3 glasses (well over 8-10oz). But yes, please wait at least 6 weeks to 3 months!

    Drinking

I didn't attempt alcohol until about 3mos post op but I was told to avoid it for a year. That said, I probably wouldn't attempt it so soon after surgery, but its your body so if you do decide to drink, just listen to your body. I definitely wouldn't attempt anything harder than a glass of wine.
  9. Good luck to you. Not drinking alcohol is going to be a big thing. The thing about shrinking your liver is the most important part and of course, concerts, parties usually have alcohol involved. If you can get away with not drinking the alcohol, make sure you get your shakes in and drink a lot of Water. If it becomes hard, then head h ome. I do know that I was only allowed 3 shakes a day and it did something to my belly and I used the washroom a lot. It's also the time that I learned a valuable lesson and that's to never trust a fart. I locked myself in the house for 2 weeks and I exercised a whole lot. I wish I would have gone and done a few fun things, so I hope you enjoy yourself.

Will I Ever Be Able To....

Have a cup of coffee and enjoy it! Straws are the only way i can drink slowly. When i try to drink out of a cup, i always drink too much and it hurts. Straws help me measure each sip. I don't even think about it anymore. In time, try a couple fries. I bet you will think they are nasty. All i can taste is grease and they leave a funky film on my tongue. Alcohol...sure, but be careful. I get tipsy on just a few sips. You will find you can eat normal...just smaller amounts. Your probably just in your freak out, "this crap sucks" phase. It gets soooo much better!!!

    Food Addiction But Still Sucessful?

I was a major food addict and I'm sure I still am. I think of it like being a recovering alcoholic, I stay away from triggers because I know I'm just one bite from falling off the wagon if I don't. It can be managed but the key is realizing the problem is in your head, not your stomach, so the band can't and won't fix it.
  12. It seemed like the article only showed about a 3% increase in alcohol related addictions in its study population after two years (about 7% of people who started the survey already had issues, and the total at end of two years was 10% ish).
  13. http://abcnews.go.co...25#.T-PSD_UVrhJ The difference between the band and the bypass is that the band can cause increased intoxication, but that is due to eating highly decreased calories. The bypass issue is that they actually have the plumbing differences that cause the increased metabolic absorption of alcohol, so they can drink til they are drunk and wait a short amount of time and the metabolism will have negated the effects, letting them consume more alcohol. Dr. Mitchell Roslin, a bariatric surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said the link between gastric bypass surgery and increased alcohol use has been attributed before to the shifting addiction theory and that this is false. The shifting addiction theory is that if a person has an impulsive drive to eat and the ability to eat large amounts of food is taken away, then he will shift his addiction to another addictive substance, like drugs or alcohol. "A gastric bypass patient has a small pouch [for a stomach] so alcohol goes straight into the intestine and is absorbed rapidly," said Roslin. "When it is absorbed rapidly, there is a high peak and rapid fall." The higher absorption rate makes alcohol more addictive, he added. Laparoscopic gastric banding, where an adjustable band in placed around a patient's stomach and limits how much food the stomach can hold, did not have an associated risk with increases in alcohol problems. King said this is to be expected as gastric banding does not change the anatomy and thus the metabolism of alcohol like gastric bypass does.
  14. Its like with anything. It is willpower. Some people have more addictive personalities. People mourn the loss of the way things used to be so you want something else to fill the void. My husband had the bypass 5 years ago. He since has been addicted to drugs, alcohol, shopping, hoarding, porn, eating, dipping, smoking. His sistet had it and is fine.
  15. Not true, according to my surgeon. Any bariatric patient, including the bandster, will absorb alcohol faster than someone who has not had surgery. We were cautioned that 1 drink could easily put you over the legal blood alcohol content for driving. He emphatically told us all that he will not write letters to law enforcement to intervene in any DUI cases which may happen as a result of not heeding his warnings.
  16. There is a thread on this forum that has a detailed article about wls and alcohol problem it wasnt long ago maybe searching back you can get more info!

    In The Newspaper This Morning

It's an addiction trade off. I am having this issue. I have taken up drinking wine, where as I never drank pre-band. I am not an alcoholic, but have decided to not drink at all b/c it hampers my WL.

    So Annoyed...

So sorry you had that experience! 4 more weeks of liquids would drive me insane. But think of how much weight you'll lose (....looking for the upside here....). As to being a cheap date...I told my husband I'm the cheapest date ever now. He doesn't have to buy me a drink (I'd get bombed on 1/2 an alcoholic drink now, I'm sure). And if I was REALLY hungry, he could take me to costco on "sample" day. It would be like a buffet, and I'd be full after about 3 tasting stations! LOL. Cheapest date EVER.

    Negative Best Friend

She also keeps drinking alcoholic drinks after she knows she isn't supposed to....she had her 1st drink just 3 weeks after surgery because her hubby's aunts who all have had wls told her it was ok but they all have had complications! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

Will I Ever Be Able To....

I have a cup that I make Water with Mio in daily and it has a straw that I use. I eat pretty much whatever I want, just smaller portions as others have said. I have had alcohol a few times, keep a case of diet caffeine free soda here and have one a couple of times a week, and, in general, eat regular food for my meals. If I'm going to the gym early in the day, then I'll have a Protein bar for Breakfast. If not, then I have an egg and a piece of sausage for breakfast. I don't feel like I'm "on a diet". This is just my new reality and I like it. Being down 100 pounds and looking better in my clothes helps a lot, too! I also just bought myself a Keurig (part of my Century Club gift to myself) and I've been enjoying my decaf coffee and tea from it.
  21. I have no regrets. I'm 12 weeks post op and 30lb down. Last month I lost 8lb but this month I've only lost 4lb so far but have been off track more than on in food choices and keep going back to the cupboards. My target set by the dietician is 4-8lb a month so I'm ok but am still knocking myself as I know just how often I have eaten badly. My dietician wants me to eat everything now, all food types so it's an experiment as to what doesn't suit me. I've found broccoli, apples, crumpets and some bread have been a problem. I have had alcoholic drinks 3 times and for me it was the same as pre-op. I can drink a whole mug of tea at 'normal speed' and my dietician has even said I can drink while eating. A couple of times this has proved problematic though.. I'm really enjoying the feeling of weightloss. I remember being this weight and I feel so much better and happier. My confidence is returning. My journey hasn't been plain sailing. Constipation has been a problem, particulaly in the first couple of weeks. I have to push myself to drink more fluids as these daily volumes havn't been part of my routine for the last 40+years! Some days I suffer the '2nd bite stuck' sensation where I have to wait and wait before eating any more as it's kind of 'stuck'. When I haven't waited long enough , I'm sick. Sometimes I can eat and eat and eat. I am suprised at some of the portions I can still have - but know I shouldn't be. Crunchy foods are my best friends. They fill me up quick and keep me full for longer. I eat chicken at least 4 times a week which is the same as before having my band. A tip is not to compare yourself and journey to others. It's really hard not to but our bodies do work at different rates. This site is one of the best tools you will find. Initially I could be on here for 5 hours a day every day. I've needed it less as I'm finding my way and might only log on for 10 mins every 3-4 days now. xx

Will I Ever Be Able To....

I can't believe it's only been 4 months for me being sleeved. It seems like a year ago! I drink out of a straw quite a bit.....yet don't do it all day long. I eat sweets rarely. That was my downfall. Fortunately, they sorta hurt my tummy now. But a small bite now and then won't kill you. You need to wait a year for alcohol. I have a friend who is 3 yrs out and she can only sip on a margarita and will not finish it. I have a cup of coffee every morning/w caffine and steamed milk. However, I wait at least 30 mins after I've had my egg so I don't wash away my Protein. Protein is a big problem for me. The best thing for me to do is track it on a phone app, "Lose It". I do get around 60 grams a day in regular food for protein. I probably eat a hamburger once a week with the top bun off. I can't eat the whole thing.....but it makes me feel so normal to be able to eat it.
  23. Drink out of a straw? Eat regular foods? I mean...I NEVER want to be a compulsive over-eater again, and I have not cheated once since my surgery (May 21st), but I was just wondering, for example, let's say I want two french fries one day. Will it make me sick? Have caffeine? I know my pop days are over. I can deal with that. However, I like my coffee in the morning. I don't go overboard. I usually drink 1 cup. Decaf coffee is gross. I want my one cup of coffee with my tablespoon of vanilla creamer again. Is that too much to ask? Is sugar off limits forever??? What about alcohol? Beer, wine, mixed drink? Anything? Will I EVER have to stop obssessing about getting in my required Protein??? Will there ever be a time that I can get my protein from food rather than these damn Protein shakes. Right now I'm on lean meats, yogurt, cheese, etc...but I can only tolerate an ounce of food at a time, so the protein I get from these foods is very small and I still have to supplement with shakes.
  24. I read this article on another post a few days ago and it is only something related to band or bypass. The cause is that alcohol is metabolised differently after those surgeries, so people can drink and drink and the effect wears off quickly, so they drink more. It's not necessarily a replacement of a food addiction, just a thing with how it runs through the body.

    Heartburn

I drank alcohol on Saturday and it seems every since then, I have been having really bad heartburn. I seem to get it even when I have not eaten or drank anything in a while. I have not tried any medication yet. I keep thinking it will go away. Has anyone else ever had this problem.
