  1. I'm an amateur singer, and I have a voice doc for when I have problems. He had been prescribing proton pump meds for reflux for 20 years or so. When I mentioned I'd like to get off the meds, he asked if I had ever considered weight loss surgery. I had never considered it, since I wasn't as big as many weight loss surgery patients. I had the surgery 6 months or so ago, and I'm off the meds now. I'm experiencing only very minor reflux symptoms. I plan to go in soon to get him to take a look at the vocal folds, because it's about time for a procedure I need every ten years or so. It will be interesting to see whether he can see a reduction in the inflammation caused by reflux.

    I hit goal today!

Job well done! Dang! Do you have the feeling of "what now?" or do you feel comfy now that you've got there? I have this feeling, and I'm really trying to chillax about setting up a new project after doing this for almost 2 years (1 year to get my mind in the right place, 1 year to lose the weight).
  3. MINERALS AND MALNUTRITION UPDATE (SPOILER: 13 months later, barely any deficiencies) Had my bloodwork done at 12.5 months. The MGB is often accused by RNY surgeons of inducing too many deficiencies (not quite duodenal switch territory), and yes, it's something you want to stay on top of. I'm by no means perfect when I comes to supplements, but I'm doing ok. I stopped taking iron pretty much after month 2 because of the horrific constipation it induces, I try getting iron in through natural sources. Minerals I'm a little low of folate, still, but otherwise everything is normal. Vitamin D trending downwards, but still in normal range. This is always a concern for those of us in regions with darker winters. Remember that iron I stopped taking? Yeah, my ferritin levels are increasing. So whatever I'm doing, I am doing it right. Blood sugar My blood sugar is on the lower end (I was never a diabetic and I sure am not one now), with an A1C of 4.4, but unlike the Spring, I don't feel hypoglycemic at all, so that's probably just as it should be. Blood I had high triglycerides pre-surgery, it's below normal now. Cholesterol healthy and obviously going even more in the right direction. For me at least, MGB doesn't seem to induce immediate malnutrition. Except you know, the weight loss. But that was planned

    Weight loss, dating and confidence

Congratulations on the weight loss!! That is so amazing. I bet it feels amazing. I could totally see where your coming from. The thought of someone not liking me now but liking me then makes me feel yucky. Yes I physical will change but I’m still me. I’ve heard so many times your so petty but….. I live in Southern California where a big girl just doesn’t fit the scenery. It’s sad but the truth.

    Average calories

I believe your body frame size makes difference with how low their weight goal should be.

I'm about the same as you guys. My goal is/was around 220 and I've been hovering around 230 for quite some time now and have to say I'm quite happy with it. I've posted this on other sub forums but my fat percentage went from 28 to 25% in my last visit, even though my weight stayed the same in the 3 month period.
  8. Great thoughts. If you are living together, it may be hard to hide the WLS. When I came home from the hospital, I had all sorts of literature laid out about nutrition, when to call the exchange, etc. I had new types of supplements. Even months out, my vitamins have the word “bariatric” on them. As far as others, it is up to you. Whatever makes you comfortable. For me, only my husband knows. I figure that there will be ignorant people who won’t understand weight loss surgery as a medical need, and won’t take the time to learn. If I lost weight, they would think that I took the easy way out. If I didn’t lose weight, they would think that I am a hopeless glutton, that even WLS wouldn’t work. I don’t need that stress in my life. So it was easier for me not to say anything. When people comment, I talk about my diet change, which is part of the truth. GL!

    Weight loss, dating and confidence

Hi there, I don’t have exactly what you are looking for but have some thoughts about confidence. I have just scheduled a few consults and am >300 lbs and have continued to date. Not everyone is interested in me. That’s fine and I don’t let that stop me. Therapy has gotten me to a place where I see myself as strong and confident despite my imperfections I found reading Brene Brown’s books or watching some of her Ted talks on the power of vulnerability, shame, and the power of imperfection very useful. Now there is weight/size but after surgery there may be extra skin, stretch marks, and even regain so my one piece of advice is to try to think of all of those physical “flaws” as battle scars from fighting a disease that not everyone has to deal with. If people you date don’t give you the respect you deserve then screw them. You are strong in your imperfection and deserve better.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I’ve been stalled for almost 3 weeks now. Lost 20 lbs in the first two weeks after surgery then hit a wall. I eat about 500-700 calories a day, weighing and tracking everything. Not losing inches either and I’m pooping like a champ. 😂 It’s demoralizing but I’m going to mentally amortize the initial 20 over the month and assume that I will keep losing weight eventually.

    I hit goal today!

Wow 🤩 that’s amazing Covgrats on making it to your goal weight!!! So good! I can’t weight to be approved still in Pre Op Phase
  13. Can’t do anything with excess loose skin except to surgically remove it. Sorry. The skin has been stretched out for too long like a well used hair band. You may get some bounce back depending upon your age, genetics, how long you were obese. Also in the months after you stabilise your remaining fat does tend to resettle a bit so some areas may refill a little. Weight or resistance training may help the underlying muscles support it better. My friend has become an avid cyclist post surgery & her thighs are rock hard with great muscle definition but she still has loose skin on her upper thighs - she showed me last week 😁. All those therapies like IPL, RF, thermage, ultrasound, cryotherapy, etc. seem to cost a lot & offer short term if any effects on small amounts of loose skin. There are quite a few threads about people’s plastic surgery here if you’re interested in reading about other’s experiences.
  14. Please be persistent in demanding additional assessment. Ask your bariatric surgeon to refer you to a general surgeon for further evaluation. You may have developed adhesions (scarring), malrotation (twisting of a segment of bowel), or an internal hernia, and your pain could certainly be of other than gastrointestinal origin. I am a former gynecological surgeon, and your complaints are absolutely NOT “par for the course”. You should consider seeing a gynecologist and having an ultrasound to evaluate your ovaries. You absolutely must get the weight loss under control. Best to you, Newbie. Keep us posted
  15. Absolutely possible (and to my mind preferable) to get all your protein from real food. I am exactly six weeks post sleeve and haven't needed to top up with any processed protein for about 3 weeks. You need to track it until you are totally confident, and you need to prioritise protein at every meal, as the others have said. My only supplements now are multivitamins and a separate B12 spray now. I won't have blood tests to check vitamin levels for another 6 weeks so may need some readjustment then, but so far so good. I am loving eating small home cooked proper food meals and losing weight (too slowly for my liking though - I know am SO impatient, LOL!!!) Sorry - having re-read your OP I see you were looking for wisdom from the people who are longer post op - feel free to ignore - I am also here mainly to learn. Good luck! 😀
  16. Hi I’m 34 and looking forward to having the sleeve next year. I’m really hoping this surgery will boost my confidence and help me get back into the flow of dating. I’m so tired of being used, closet girlfriend or finding out I’m a side chick. Oh that’s hard to even write. It hurts and has caused me to kinda shut down on the dating. I’ve always been very out going, confident and enjoyed dating and I can’t wait to be there again. I’d love to hear some uplifting stories of dating success after survey.
  17. Jenn5120, consider that not taking in enough calories/protein AND going to the gym this soon post-op could contribute to a weight loss stall. Have you checked with your nutritionist about going to the gym?
  18. Sorry you are going through this! I hope your surgeon gets back to you soon. I started vomiting maybe day five? I had a swallow study to rule out a stricture. I had constant nausea for nearly 2 months (even taking anti-nausea meds), and vomiting several times a day. My surgeon said that some people are just more sensitive and it would go away. It eventually did. I haven’t vomited since, and weight loss is going well. Are you keeping a food journal? Protein shakes and anything with milk were triggers for me. Also, I had to be selective about which pills I took. I could not take them all (even spaced apart and with food) because I would vomit them right back up. Anything you can report to your surgeon about timing, foods, meds, supplements, amounts, etc. might be helpful. You will get through this, hang in there and hopefully it will go away or you will have answers soon!

    Psychological evaluation

The purpose of the psychological assessment is to find any undiagnosed mental illness, substance abuse or eating disorders that may make you unsuccessful or even endanger your health post surgery. The MMPI is a very reputable tool to help with that assessment. It’s unfortunate that your clinic doesn’t have a handful of doctors that they use but if they are requiring one that uses the MMPI it sounds like they are trying to make sure the assessment is not a waste of your time and money. My psychological assessment was a joke I did not do any written testing and the talking portion of the assessment lasted about five minutes. They did not even ask me anything about my eating habits or expectations from the surgery. Post surgery I learned that I have issues of emotional and boredom eating that I wish someone had picked up on Prior to surgery. I am slowly losing the weight but I worry if I don’t get to the root of those issues soon that I will be one of those who Regain. I would probably be frustrated about the three months too but in my opinion your team is looking out for you by making sure the doctor they use Does a thorough evaluation. If it were me I would ask them if they have a cancellation list or if you can call ever so often to see if they have any new openings.

    why revisions?

I'm not sure about that - they do a sleeved stomach when they do duodenal switches (in fact, sleeve used to be phase 1 of the DS back when they usually did the DS in two stages. They usually do it in one stage now). A lot of people lost enough weight after phase 1 that they didn't really need to do phase 2 - so at some point the sleeved stomach (VSG) started to be offered as a standalone surgery. So I would think reflux would be a potential issue with either VSG or DS. Unless there's something about the intestinal part of the DS that helps with reflux? I don't know. Any DS'ers out there know? P.S. I just googled it and found an article by the NIH - yes - looks like the intestinal part of the DS redirects the bile or whatever that can cause reflux with the sleeve - so you are correct!
  23. Let's just start over! Here's a great idea! I've done this with people that hate water. Maybe try making a slushie! Blend your ice with any flavor low sugar . Even the dollar store sells Hawaiian punch flavor sugar free. Eating ice can be easier. Try freezing your protein smoothie. Make it like a soft serve. If your protein powder is lousy that's hard. Get a vanilla flavored one. Freezing makes all the difference. You feel like your eating and yet it's getting your food intake it. It's like a melted frosty. I've been worried case my weight loss has been so slow compared to everyone else. But you can stall right out of the gate. Your body has to get used to everything again. My surgery was Nov 26 and finally lost 18 pounds. But I'm not getting my walks in. My fault I need a new hip. Good luck with the slushie! God bless Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I am at 5 weeks too and am quite behind the rest of our group. I can not seem to progress to any soft foods. The only things I can eat are dry crackers, yogurt, and chicken soup [strained] I have never made it anywhere near my recommended water intake. Had very few of my vitamins. I start with nausea and vomiting it continues for days . I finally got a Doctor today after the Christmas break and he has prescribed a GERD tablets so I am hopeful. I am so weak and shaky and have no energy. My only consolation is I am loosing weight. ....... Protein - failed Water - failed Vitamins - failed Lets hope we get on course soon
  25. Any advice would be great as they only gave me one nutrition visit and noting post because $300 out of a pocket a session is too much for my budget right now. I ma 5 weeks post gastric sleeve and struggling with water intake I hate water I have drank sparkling water for the past 10 years. All the crystal lights and Mio I have tried are to sweet. Also my protein intake is awful since the surgery any shake I have tried makes me vomit along with everything else lately. And my weight has stayed the same I have lost nothing. So discouraged right now. Starting the gym Monday
