  1. Including my 1 week pre-op liquid diet, I've only lost 13 lbs. I just thought it would be more. I know Im not getting in enough liquids, but that seems to be getting easier every day. Just wondering what others are seeing who have sleeved around the same time (8/13)?
  2. If I was your husband the 85% divorse rate after you loose the weight would be more of a concern, or not? 60% is the statistic used to describe how much excess weight is lost by the average person that under goes this surgery. It has nothing to do with remission back to your current weight. Have you husband actually read the statistics. In my case, at 2 weeks out I was off all medications. At 7 weeks my knees no longer hurt when walking up or down stairs. The fatality rate is close to having a tooth pulled at .01%. Complications are low if you go to a good surgeon. My surgeon has had one leak and no deaths. He has been doing bariatric surgery for over 10 years at about 500 surgeries in the last year alone. This surgery is all about you. Dont let others interfer if its your decision.
  3. I had stalls when I gained weight so I expect them when I lose. I remember times when I was eating horribly and thinking, "wow, I haven't even gained", then wham 10 pound gain.
  4. My "maintenance and loose skin" is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I am 10 times healthier, happier and better adjusted. My professional and social life have greatly improved. I recently bought a car based on what I wanted, not on what would fit me. I buy clothes because I like them or because they look good on me, not because that is what was available at the fat guy store. Food has zero power over me. I enjoy new hobbies and activities because they are fun instead of work. I guess you can dwell on one or two negatives, but why would you? There is too much good that came from my weight loss. Who cares about the rest?

    December’s 2019 Sleevers!!!

I've been doing well. I am down 39lbs from surgery on 12/16. I'm down 59lbs total since July 2019 when I start on the journey. I know I'm a slow loser and some days that is a struggle. My clothes fit loose on me and I know I need to go shopping for a smaller size but with everything going on that's not going to happen soon.

Denied by Tricare!! 6.5 pounds under!!

William C Frey1 and John Pilcher2 (1) Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, TX, USA (2) Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, TX, USA Published online: 01 October 2003 Background: Obesity is a well known risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Medical therapy is not effective for morbid obesity. Bariatric surgery is therefore a reasonable option for weight reduction for patients with clinically severe obesity. Unrecognized OSA, especially in those patients receiving abdominal surgery, has influenced perioperative morbidity and morality. The incidence of OSA for patients being evaluated for bariatric surgery has not been previously defined. Methods: 40 consecutive patients being evaluated for bariatric surgery were examined with a history, physical examination and laboratory data. Polysomnography (PSG) was conducted in all patients regardless of symptoms. Results: An obstructive sleep-related breathing disorder (OSRBD) was present in 88% of the patients. OSA was present in 29 of 41 (71%) and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) in 7 of 41 (17%). The mean low oxygen desaturation was 84% and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) was 10 cm H2O pressure. The majority of the patients were women and mean BMI was 47 kg/m2. Patient characteristics failed to predict the severity of OSRBD. Conclusions: This population of clinically severe obese patients being evaluated for bariatric surgery had an 88% incidence of an OSRBD, 71% with OSA. Appropriate therapy with CPAP perioperatively would theoretically prevent hypoxic complications associated with OSRBD. Providers should have a low threshold for ordering a PSG as part of the preoperative evaluation for bariatric surgery. Empiric CPAP at 10 cm H2O should be considered for those patients who cannot complete a PSG before surgery.
  7. I recently heard about Zonegran, a new drug that may help with weight loss. Here's an article about it and another drug called Axokine that makes it sound promising: http://webmd.lycos.com/content/article/63/71964.htm Now obviously, these weight loss drugs are still too new to be sure if they will be useful to MO patients. I'm surely glad I got the band! But such developments give me hope that in 5 or 10 years there may be some amazing advances in curing obesity without surgery. Perhaps something that will make it easier than it is with the band. If that is the case, I will be grateful that I chose the band instead of the RNY or DS. If some easier method of weight control comes along in a few years, I have the option to get unbanded and will be essentially back to normal. Reversing an RNY or DS is far, far more complicated and risky. So, it really makes me feel bad for all the young people out there who are going for the RNY. That is such a drastic, permanent choice to be making. The band makes sense as a first choice. The RNY and DS are only justified as last resorts, in my opinion.

How Do You Get Past Your Past??

I remember when I was 16, weighed 122 at 5'1", my thighs rubbed together, I had "square hips", and broad shoulders...and I didn't have a flat stomach... That's all I saw. I didn't like my body image. I never felt good about how I looked. I have a photo of me from back then on my fridge and I am sad to think of how "that girl" (me) viewed herself. She didn't value what she had. She didn't realize what she had. She was programmed by superficial people and had a lot of negative mental messages that she believed. She compared herself to people around her who had enitrely different body shapes and builds. It was so unfair... And sad. Because she was beautiful and GREAT with her own unique body shape at that weight. "imperfections" and all... if you want to call them that. Now that I've been 110 lbs over that weight where my thighs REALLY rubbed together and I had quite a few more rolls in places I didn't know I could have rolls... I have an appreciation for what I had. I'd like to go back and smack that girl into reality and tell her if she doesn't quit the fast food and start exercising more, that THIS is what's going to happen to her. I remember how hard, at 140, 150 lbs that it was just to lose 2, 3, 10 lbs. I think the less you have to lose, the harder it is to lose. Seriously. I find the heavier I am, the "easier" it comes off when I make good choices consistently. At lower weights, I think for some, to lose 10-15 lbs is like having to lose 50 or more lbs. I use those weights as examples, not just of vanity, but I was in the Army. As a soldier, if I didn't fall into the Army's bracket for what I should weigh for my height (120lbs) then they would do a fat percentage tape test on me to determine my fat percentage. I weighed around 140 and that was borderline for being what they considered to be "overweight". So I was always straddling that line. Depending on what world you're in, weight is a big deal and not just about vanity. Sorry about the rant...I think I'm having my thoughts bleed over from other topics I've replied to. I want to encourage you to view the weight you got up to as choosing to take the long journey around a tough mountain. You've come full circle and are back on track. You've learned valuable lessons, you cherish yourself more, value yourself more, like yourself more... who cares that you slipped and gained weight... who hasn't in our society! Perfection is bogus and a delusion of society and media. It's bunk and photoshopped (or anorexic). Look at the past as experience and a lesson learned. If you hadn't gone down the road to being overweight, you couldn't have truly learned what you have from the experience and you wouldn't be in such a better place as you are now. Truly enjoying your life, who you are and what you have to offer. Focus on THAT. Don't be ashamed. Embrace who you are and have been at all stages in your life. The fact is, no matter what you weigh, and you said it yourself, you are smart and beautiful and have something to offer this world... Everyone has a contribution to make and a purpose in this life as long as they are breathing. Your weight didn't change that...up or down...what changed is how YOU view you and that's important. Embrace that! There is no such thing as a mistake, it's called experience.
  9. It’s hard to believe but I’ve have my lap band for 10 years this month! I began to have burping (loud) and often in the past 4 years. Top of esophagus became loose. (Normal). I’m often suffering from gas pains especially when I eat salmon, cale, broccholi, omlettes, eggs, raw veggies, quinoa, pasta, chicken and vomiting ......no problems though with soups, fried foods, icecream, candy. Get the picture. I lost a total of 40lbs. And stayed there. I am completed unfilled but still suffer almost daily with stomach pain and gas. I am 59 years old and pass the hungry hormonal years. Does anyone know how much weight is typically gained after removal? Is the proceedure risky? thank you🙏 Solena

General Lap Band Question and Answer

    1) Do any of you use baby spoons or forks for smaller bites? Not me. 2) Do all of you NOT sip Water when eating? I don't drink while eating at all. I wait an hour after eating before drinking. 3) How much alcohol can get you buzzed now that you are banded? Since I only drink before eating, and it's on an empty stomach, I do get buzzed fairly quickly...2 glasses of wine, or 1 martini. 4) Who can still eat fast food? I usually opt for Taco Bell if I have to eat fast food. I eat taco salad, pintos and cheese, or the inside of a beef burrito. 5) Who can still eat bread? The only bread I've eated that didn't bother me was Pepperidge Farm Thin Sliced Wheat Bread. And based on recommendations here, I toasted it. 6) Do any of you do Atkins? Not me. I don't low-carb, but I stick with whole grains. 7) Do any of you do Weight Watcher's program? Not me. I hate counting points or calories, and weighing and measuring. 8) Does sex count as exercise? I think anything that gets you active is a bonus, but I've heard that the "calories burned" figure for sex is not as high as people have been told in the past. I guess it depends on your technique, how long you go, and how often! Above all, have fun! (Sorry, couldn't resist that.) 9) Anyone have problems with chewing/swallowing/digesting nuts? Nope. I keep raw nuts in the shell in a small basket out on the counter. If you have to crack the nuts, it slows you down. Nuts are very healthy, *but* you have to limit the quantity. I usually eat no more than 7-10 almonds, or 4-5 pecans or walnuts. 10) What about cheese? I stick with low-fat cheese, and avoid melted cheese unless it's mixed in with something else. I had trouble choking on melted mozzerella before being banded, and don't want to chance it now! 11) Anyone already noticing their skin sagging? Yep, but not too bad yet. But, I sort of think of sagging skin as battle scars in the battle of the bulge! 12) Any good snack ideas out there besides veggies? I am burned out on them!! I like non-fat, sugar free yogurt, nf sf pudding, a *few* raw nuts, turkey Jerky (but it's salty, and can cause you to retain water), and once in a while if I'm craving Peanut Butter, I'll have a tablespoon or so on a rice cake. 13) Any good tips period? Write down everything you eat. Even though I don't think anyone wants to weigh and measure forever, do it in the beginning, and periodically after that just to learn about portion sizes. I've found that journalling helps "keep you honest", plus serves as a good reference for later. If you plateau, you can go back over your journal and maybe try something different. 14) How long should it take to lose 10 pounds if you are doing everything correctly? For me, about 5-6 weeks. But, I expect that to slow down as I lose weight. Tami

OMG - the last 10 pounds!

The last 10 are really hard, I was already a slow loser and I had to push to lose the final 10. I went to the gym and forced myself to take classes 4 days a week, I rode my bike and went on walks at least 5 days a week. I also ate really clean and drank a lot of water. That was on top of my regular gym schedule of 4-5 days a week. I promised myself that I wouldn’t give up, it was hard but It was worth it. I really miss going to the gym. I never thought I’d say that!

    I feel really stupid

It's not Covid 19 because I'm a chronic asthmatic. It'd be in my lungs and my lungs are fine. I was told even before my surgery that I had an increased risk due to the malabsorptive nature of the surgery. I even have someone in my nutrition support group that had the same surgery and suffered chronic issues with his vitamin levels to where not only was he hospitalized, but he ended up eventually having to have his intestines re-connected because of it. That's part of the reason I'm so mad at myself, because I KNOW better!

    crazy dreams

everyone's is different from what I've been reading. Mine is 800-1000 cal a day. 70-90 g Protein with shakes being Breakfast and lunch with a Protein Bar in the middle for snack. dinner is 3-4 oz of lean meat and half cup of starch and veggies. Totaling no more than 350 cal at dinner. I'll be a week in on Monday tomorrow with one more week to go. Band date is the 9th. I've lost 10 pounds since Monday. Crazy! First few days were very hard but it gets easier and now I'm used to it. It's just routine and I love seeing the scale go down. Don't get me wrong I still have tough moments like today At Nascar race. Corn dogs funnel cakes nachos cheeseburger fries. U name it.... I had my Protein Shakes before I left and protein bar while my bf was eating junk. Very hard but I made it. Good luck!
  17. Hi everyone, It will be 8 weeks this Tuesday since I had my Roux-en-Y surgery. Today I got on the scale and I weigh less than 300 pounds! I haven't been less than 300 pounds for 10 years I was almost in tears when I saw that number 298! I feel so blessed and lucky to have had the surgery done! I had a very smooth recovery and I am a rule follower so I have never vomited I've never had dumping syndrome and I'm a fiend for exercise now. I'm walking 7 miles a day and going to do my first 5K next weekend. Thanks for all of your support and role modeling that you have given me!! Namaste, Mamie60

    I really want to cheat!

Well, you sure picked the wrong time to think you can eat a biscuit. You could've tried that 10 days ago with little damage, but it ain't smart to try it two days before the doctor starts to cut on you. You can do this. You just have to DO this.

    Running low on energy

I used to consider myself a night owl, going to bed around 1 or 2 am and sleeping for maybe 4.5 hours. But now, I CANNOT wait to get to bed by 10:30, and that's stretching it. I can barely keep my eyes open! I am almost 4 years out with a lap band and am at goal. I take a Multivitamin and B12 daily (mostly) but probably don't get enough Protein. Anyone else dragging?

    Running low on energy

Dont know how old your are, but unfortunately sleep patterns do change with age, especially with women. Sometimes its hormones , etc. I used to sleep like a baby every single night, then while expecting 26 years ago, ( I was 30) started waking up once a night. I could handle that, but then it got way worse ! Asleep at 10 pm, then every single night, wide awake at around 3:30 am. I'd have cocoa and crackers to help me maybe go back to sleep. Maybe. I tried everything. Now , I take Trazadone before bed, and combined with my ADD meds, sleep for 7 - 8 hrs straight. Zzzzzzzzzz

  22. I count everything. I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2022 and was put on a sodium restriction. Just two months before my projected VSG surgery date my A1C was 9.6% and I was put on diabetic meds(Metformin and Semaglutide), given a blood sugar meter with instructions to check my blood sugar twice daily, and told to cut out all sugars in my diet. Around the same time as my Type-2 Diabetes diagnosis my Bariatric Surgeon had me go on a Keto/Atkins very low carb diet prior to the liver shrinking diet due to my extremely high 71.5 BMI. That was my first time on a 'low carb' diet since I tried South Beach in 2004, and I really liked it for how it made me feel and how much easier it has become to find low-carb substitutions for common foods. So I decided to stick with it post-surgery. I am two weeks out from my surgery and I am at the point where I can eat 800-1000 calories a day, where 50% is from protein, 40% fat, 10% Net Carb, and sodium between 1,500mg and 2,000mg. I track my Daily Food Intake in an Excel Spreadsheet, listing Calories, Total Fat, Protein, Net Carbs, Fiber, and Sodium of each. I also track my fluids, noting if the beverage has any sodium. I avoid sugars like the Plague, except when it comes to fruits. I will on occasion eat fresh strawberries, raspberries, or some honeydew melon. I don't feel the Keto diet is suitable for Post-op due to the high reliance on Fats. I like a more even distribution favoring protein over fat, but still keeping enough healthy fats in my system so entering Ketosis is a possibility. My carbs are always under 25g a day, most of the time between 15g and 20g. I was only in Ketosis once for a brief few days, and it was right after surgery. I check my ketone level regularly with those over the counter 'pee' strips. I like my method of tracking my nutrition manually instead of using an App or Website, although there is a lot more work looking up nutritional labels for everything I eat, or general nutritional information for those items without labels. The plus side of it is I am amassing a database of my frequently eaten food items so logging is becoming easier. I agree with the general consensus that 'Diet' is an ill-fitting word for what we are doing. I like the term 'Lifestyle Change' much better. A diet, to me, is finite in its duration. It has a beginning and an end. A Lifestyle Change goes on indefinitely.
  23. Hello, I have been banded for 10 years now. I fill and remove fill from my band every few months. 10 days after my last fill, my port itches very bad. Does anyone of you have a similar experience? Any idea what it could be? Thanks, Joe Sent from my SM-N920C using the BariatricPal App

I got on the scale today at the gym after a week in Vegas where I threw caution to the wind. A 3 pound gain. I'm surprised I didn't gain more than that, actually, what with 2 trips to the Cheesecake factory, a Bellagio Eclaire and Caramel Brownie, and every meal being some sort of restaurant food. I was honestly terrible. I TRIED to work out, but the gym cost $25/day and I'd take a 3 pound gain over a $150 gym bill. In addition to that, it was the temperature of the sun outside so walking around was kept at a minimum. So today I was supposed to present the new website redesign to the directors. I was NOWHERE near ready to do it and I wasn't able to work in Vegas like I'd hoped. So I called in sick!!! I still can't believe I did that. I just wanted to escape reality for ONE MORE day. But then I got 2 more calls today that we're doing a shoot early tomorrow and I've got to be there with all my gear to film the thing. I was REALLY hoping to pass this off to my intern, but I can tell he's not quite ready for that yet. I do think he'll be able to handle overseeing the special effects, though. He's good at that. And my other intern, Traci, I'm sure will have everything organized for tomorrow's shoot. She's the most organized person I've ever met. I'm just trying to take life one day at a time at this point. I feel so incredibly overwhelmed during my day job, my personal business, and my life! I need to make some goals and set a schedule for myself. If I don't pencil in "read your scriptures" at this point it doesn't happen. You'd think I'd be burning more calories with all the worrying I do! SCALE: 237 at gym (gained 3 pounds on vacation!)
