I am 4 months post VSG and down 50 lbs but have had unreasonable sugar cravings in the past week that I have given in to - eating hard candy, drinking small amounts of alcohol, part of a bagel, and today I got a frozen yogurt with crushed up butterfinger in it and ate about 1/2 cup and got so sick - vomited multiple times. Why am I doing this to myself? It's almost like I am testing the limits to see what I can "get away with" which is ridiculous since I KNOW that this isn't good for me long term. I am so close to being under 200 lbs for the first time in over 10 yrs. am I intentionally sabotaging myself? WTF is wrong with me?

I need some advice. I am 14 months out after having RNY. Recently, I got out the hospital 10 days ago after an 8 day stay. I have several health issues going on. Including a complex ovarian cyst that I am seeing an Oncologist about this coming Thursday. Additionally, I have become borderline if not actually, anorexic. I have been told by my surgeon (threatened in a polite way) to get back to 140. I am 5 ft 4 and currently weigh 119. I was 234 at surgery time. I was down to 113 back in December. Then fluctuated between 113 and 116. Then up to 119 since being admitted to the hospital. I am at the bottom of my BMI. Anyway, I was admitted via the ER for abdominal pain. I had all kinds of test and exploratory surgery (he did fix a small hernia he found), My intestines are not plump like they should be, for lack of another term. Pretty much they think I have Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), possible now lactose intolerant and maybe issues with fruit. The other thing is, contents goes through my digestive track very fast. Which could be causing dumping.??? I am on antibiotic for the SIBO and told not to have fruit or lactose. I am also anemic. Needless to say, it makes a mess of trying to find something to eat. Trying to gain 20 pounds, stay lowfat, low sugar. I need suggestions for dairy, like cheese and yogurt. What brands should I look for? We have Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Fresh Thyme etc. where I live. I also have to drink 5 Protein shakes a day. For the record, I am seeing the Nutritionist and Counselor at the Surgeons office. I may have to switch to an eating disorder clinic. I realize, it may come to that. Thank you in advance.

Good Culture organic cottage cheese
Ruth1ess posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone seen this yet? My work cafeteria is always stocking weird, oddball products and I saw this today. Very impressive! 18-19g Protein, less carbs than some Greek yogurts, and comes in sweet and savory flavors. I'm going to try the blueberry tomorrow. http://www.goodculture.com Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App -
To Protein Drink or Not To Protein Drink
AnA92212 replied to anwen_ut's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I've had some discussions with my NUT, surgeon, and primary care physician about this. What they consider "grazing" is mindless eating. So, having a packet of crackers on your desk and work and eating when not hungry. I have dedicated Snacks and meals. I don't eat outside of these. The times may differ from day to day depending on my schedule, but I could not get enough in without the snacks. Typical day: coffee with stevia on the way into work (I have a 30 minute drive) 9:00 am breakfast (usually greek yogurt and turkey sausage or eggs and a Protein, or SF oatmeal and a protein, etc) 11:00 am snack (turkey, yogurt, cheese, just something) 1:00 or 2:00 pm lunch (zoodles with turkey meatballs or chicken and veggies--some type of protein and veggies) 4:00 snack (usually a protein before I go work out) 7:00 pm-ish dinner (protein and veggie or Soup or something) I get about 800 to 1100 calories a day. I run 3-5 miles 3 days a week. Walk 3-5 miles a week 3 days a week. Zumba once a week and weight training 2 times a week. I get between 60 and 80 g protein a day. Protein shake is up to you. There is NO way to get that much protein without shakes immediately after surgery. By a year out my doctor wants you to get 90% or more of your protein from food. It is good practice to have one available just in case you are stuck without a healthy food option or sometimes it is just impossible to get your protein in that day. -
So confused-Weighing less=less protein?
ssflbelle posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am confused and hope the veterans can explain things better than the Dr did. However before I ask my questions I think you need some history. I weighed 352 pounds when I had my first consultation and we agreed on an ideal weight of 155. I was put on a 6 month pre-op diet which consisted of 3 meals a day and trying to get in 60 to 100 grams of Protein. I lost 37 pounds. I had my surgery Jan 26th and was told that starting at 3 weeks post-op I should be getting in a total of 60 to 80 grams of protein in 1 to 3 meals. I mainly had 2 meals where I could eat maybe 1 1/2 oz of protein food before I got a terrible pain. I was told by the surgeon the pain was my tummy telling me it was full. Therefore I was still drinking at least 2 to 3 Protein shakes and Soups. So most days I got 60 to 80 grams of protein. So that takes us to today's 1 month post op visit with the surgeon. I do not have a NUT.He has been telling me everything I should and shouldn't be eating since the consultation. I lost another 23 pounds. For a total of 60 pounds since the first consultation. The surgeon claims since the first consultation I have lost 30% of my Excess Body Weight. He says now that I am that much thinner I only need 41 grams of protein a day and need to eat 3 meals only and stop drinking so many shakes and soups. However I can have 1 shake as one of my meals. This is where I am confused as everything I have read over the last 7 months says 60 to 100 grams of protein. Questions: 1. Was your protein reduced once you started to lose weight? If not, what grams were you eating at 1 month post-op? 2. I thought eating less than 60 grams would cause problems with my muscles and hair etc? 3. How can I get the 41 grams of protein down when I physically can't eat but 1 1/2 oz of protein food at a meal? Even if I have 1 Protein Shake as a Meal Replacement that still leaves 11 grams of protein food in 2 meals. A half a cup of yogurt which is about all I can eat would only give me maybe 6 grams of protein. 4. What would you do, eat only the 41 grams of protein the Dr says to eat or would you continue to eat 60 or more? 5. Would you continue to drink more than 1 protein shake or Soup a day? I don't want to mess up and gain weight but I don't want to become sick either because I am not taking in what seems to be the higher amount of protein that others are eating. Please help me figure out what to do. Thanks everyone! -
Hi, all: I've been a relatively slow loser since my surgery, which was 7.5 months ago. I've lost about 60 pounds from 265 to 205-ish. I've been ok with I, not weighing myself very often--concentrating on eating well, drinking a lot, and exercising. I feel great and have started training for a 5k. It's been almost two months, however, since I saw any weight loss. I was patient for a while, embracing the stall, focusing on doing the work, but I'm starting to wonder if this is more than a stall and I'm just not going to lose any more weight unless I reduce my calories significantly. I really don't want to do that because I am getting in my Protein, not eating anything "bad" and feel pretty good. I also enjoy not ever feeling too much hunger. I tend to eat three small meals and two Snacks (usually a yogurt.) I hit at least 80 grams of protein a day. So, my question is: how long until you declare a stall not a stall but rather the end of your weight loss? Thanks! Mary

sugar free? i spent the past year getting off of aspertame?!
Kindle replied to asiruam87's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
No, nothing makes me dump. If I eat a lot of sweets (like a whole piece of cheesecake or several cookies) I might get a bit of a tummy ache. I never had any suggested drinks....just daily Fluid and protein goals. It was up to me how I met them. Had no calorie or carb goals, either As for popscicles, Syntrax Naturals (sweetened with stevia and erythritol) comes in Orange, peach, vanilla and chocolate and made good pops. Mixing orange juice with the vanilla makes a good dreamsicle. Diluted fruit juice (100% juice, no sugar added) makes good pops, too. I couldn't tolerate artificial sweeteners or lactose for 4 months so I had to get creative on what I drank. I was flavoring my protein smoothies and plain Greek yogurt with pureed fruit from the beginning. The carbs actually helped with my energy level. And considering I passed goal at 7 months and have maintained over two years out I'd say real sweeteners have not hindered my progress. Moderation is key. -

Ok how about eggs, scrambled, omelet or hard boiled? Also you can try Dannon triple zero Greek yogurt, 24 gr of protein each. Tuna or chicken salad with some light mayo. Shrimp is one of my new favorites. -

I joined the losers bench on February 9th
It's Time replied to It's Time's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Update - down 38 pounds total, 19 since surgery. I started the week off, switching to puréed and although I food prepped and thought I was ready, my tummy said no. Tuna and received beans were a definite no and everything else other than yogurt has given me extreme acid reflux. Called the doctors office and was told again that I should not be experiencing this since I had a hernia repair but I digress. They put me on nexium twice a day, which has apparently not kicked in yet and I ended up choking up foam yesterday at work, which I read is gerd. I'm so annoyed with not being able to eat but have switched back to protein shakes since they go down well sigh. Clothes are fitting better and my scars are trying to finally rid themselves of some of this surgical glue. I have found that I am a daily weigh person but haven't decided if it's best or if I should switch to weekly. I seem to average about a pound a day but as many others, I am impatient[emoji16] I know I didn't gain the weight over night but I sure do want it to come off over night heheheheheh I really can't wait until I am 100% as I am so ready for some extreme working out [emoji123]???? whelp that's all for now Tracey - how was surgery? I pray all is well and you are walking and sipping away [emoji16] -
Anyone with strict protein only diet?
glitter eyes replied to losinglily's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Like Babbs said.. I too mostly ate all protein the first approx. six months. I did get a tiny amount of carbs from my protein shakes, Greek yogurt, turkey jerky, etc. Once I meet my protein goals and fluid goals for the day I really didn't have much room for more. Now that I am in maintenance I do eat more veggies and some fruit. -

Low potassium
Ilovecats1985 replied to Ilovecats1985's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the info! I eat a lot of yogurt, tunA, and beans. I'll have to focus on eating more of the high potassium foods for a while. -
Snacks for me in the weight loss phase were usually: cottage cheese light greek yogurt string cheese "meat" sticks (like beef sticks, but with turkey or other lean meats) Protein bars (be VERY careful about the nutrition if you go this route) peanuts (not until 3 months post-op)

Letty's journey post-op
Rdsegobia replied to Rdsegobia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All this week I been reading the book called A pound of cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner and is very interesting all of the points of view he gives about how we gain weight. I also checked out some of his you tube videos. I am contemplating eating the way he explained on the book. Like I mention in the past I been stuck in the 180's and sometimes I feel like my body is getting used to the way I been eating for the past 6 months. I eat about 90-95% of the times good. Still no simple carbs and very limited fruit. Maybe if I changed the eating my body will be shocked and I start losing again. The book focus on eating per day 1lb of vegetables, unlimited fruit, raw nuts ( I think it mention 2oz) and only 1-2 tablespoon of fat (olive oil), 6-8 oz. of meat protein and 3-4 oz of vegetable protein (or all protein could be from vegetable protein example: any type of beans). No dairy, no grains, no artificial sweeteners, and no processed foods (no protein shakes). The only thing I see that will really change the way I been eating is the dairy and artificial sweetener cause I drink fairlife milk with my coffee and I also use splenda, crystal light, and greek yogurt. I do really good on vegetables and I love fruits ( I really missed them). I really think I will do this for 2 weeks and see what difference I see in my weight loss. Actually, I am sure I will do the changes, I will start this coming Monday and I will post updates for the next two weeks. -
Anyone with strict protein only diet?
gracehughes replied to losinglily's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor says that the human brain needs 50g of carbs for optimal performance, but she wants those carbs coming from beans, veggies, milk, yogurt. Even the Premier Protein shakes have 5g of carbs in them. -
Can't Wait to get Band tight.
BayougirlMrsS replied to RoseyRose's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@RoseyRose .... all dr. are different and yours may not put in that much. Right now you are in whats called "band-hell" meaning... the band is there and you feel like you should have woke up and not feel hungry. You should still be on your liq. diet and yesssss you will be hungry. Fight through it.. Watch the kinds of liq you are taking in. Make sure they are not high in fat or calories... I wish i could tell you that you will come out of your first fill and not feel hungry.... but there are no guarantees... I have the 14cc band and it took till i had 5.5cc in before i felt "not hungry". Now... going on year 7 i have 10.5cc and im hardly ever hungry. in fact there are days when i forget to eat. I know that sounds strange... but it's true. So, i have to remind myself to eat Breakfast at least... lunch is up in the air. i try and eat supper at least a few bites. If i don't then i am hungry in the am. I have coffee and yogurt with granola most every am. If i do eat lunch its something small and light... Soup/baked sweet potato, guacamole, tuna salad... most of the time i eat it by itself... No bread/crackers/chips... Supper is a few bites of what ever i cook. Last night i fried them shrimp with fries..... I ate 4 small-med size shrimp but i saute mine with a litter pam/butter and ate with a half of avocado. Hang in there.... it is so worth it... the band works if you work it.. -
The only way I've successfully increased my potassium level is eating more potassium rich foods. It's hard to supplement since just ingesting a bunch of potassium can do nasty things like stop your heart! There are postassium-rich foods that are sleeve friendly like yogurt, tuna, sardines (in fact lots of fish has potassium), tomato sauce, beans, dried fruit (small amounts of course), and edamame. Good luck!

To Protein Drink or Not To Protein Drink
Ronjohn replied to anwen_ut's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
20 grams of fat? That seems pretty crazy. I have a general rule of making sure everything I eat has more grams of protein than grams of fat, but that's about it. What reason we're you given for keeping fat that low? I honestly never asked as it hasn't really been an issue. I will ask the next time I go the NUT. It really hasn't been a issue during the first two months. Now that I can eat more variety it is a little harder. I've mostly eaten skinless chicken breast, which have practically no fat. Lately I haven't been sticking to that 20 gram number spot on. I focus on eating lean protein and tend to stay pretty close. I am only eating 700 calories a day, so eating lean protein is pretty important. If I eat something high in fat I will go over 700 calories pretty quickly. I typically eat a fat free Greek yogurt and use Fairlife milk for my shake. Between the shake, milk and yogurt I am at 54 grams of protein with hardly any fat. -

Thank you, that's very helpful, I honestly never knew that I don't each much mash potatoes but I do have some farina, or refried Beans Is there a way to make cottage cheese taste any good? I never liked it but my nut said I should start having it Have you tried cottage cheese post surgery? Preop, I hated greek yogurt, just the texture alone made me want to gag. Post op--it is one of my favorite go to foods.I tried it before surgery but I never tried it after because I think it would maybe taste the same -
Purée Diet - I'm so lost
ssflbelle replied to kalea_04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Rosarita no fat refried bean for me too. Usually 1/4 of a cup with 1 teaspoons of shredded cheese and 2 deli slices of turkey is about all I can eat at one time. When I eat that I still get a pain under my breast bone that hurts for at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours after. I tried cottage cheese, tuna, yogurt and egg. I am still using at least 1 Protein Drink and sometimes 1 Protein Soup a day. Being 4 weeks out I still can't get 60 grams with just the food in this stage. I see the Dr for my 1 month followup on Friday. -
I buy Protein powder called GENEPRO. You can get 30g of protein in 1 tbs. it's unflavored so you can put it in anything.. I make protein shots three times a day with 1 tbs of Genepro in about 2oz of almond milk, Greek yogurt, etc Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Any FEBRUARY sleevers?!
SuzzyQ_delli replied to Salinagetssleeved's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my surgery 2/18 I get full very easily. 4 baby spoonfuls and I'm done! Sugar free Popsicles seem easier to get fluids in but I limit two a day maybe try that. Yogurt (which I did not like before surgery) is the easiest on my stomach. Hope that helps! -
Feeling Weak.....Does anybody get weak when you are on pre-op or right after surgery on such a low calorie diet?
Barry W replied to ellenelise12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Must be nice to be allowed veggies and fruit on your pre-op! I have seen that some people need to be on all liquids - that would be tough! My pre-op diet is two weeks of: - Calorie counting, 1200 calories total for men, and 1000 calories total for women, which means the "real meal" has to be modest and quite low in carbs and fat - 3 meal replacement shakes (I actually am using 2 and replacing Breakfast and lunch) - 1 "real meal" per day of lean meat and veggies - 1 piece of fruit - 1/2 cup of fat-free milk or nonfat/low-sugar yogurt - while not required, we are allowed to eat as many veggies as we want - I often eat a whole 12oz bag of veggies as part of my dinner, and snack on raw baby carrots - there are almost no calories in veggies, and lots of Vitamins and Fiber
