    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hello all of you February 2019 fellow surgery friends. I have been reading your post just kind of sitting back and comparing your experiences to my own. I had my surgery on 2/15/19. I am a 63 year old woman who is 5’6” and my HW was 228. My SW was 225 and my CW is 202. I have always hovered around 205-212 and in the best of times or the worst I cannot loose weight no matter what program I try. To be honest, as much as I would love to be thin my main reason for having this surgery was because of extreme sleep apnea. I went through a sleep study and got on a CPAP which I tried for a year and a half. I woke up every night with a horrible stomach ache that would last 2-3 hours. My doctor and I went through every type of head gear and face mask they make. Long story short, nothing worked. I wake up in the night gasping for air and anxiety which sends my BP off of the charts. I thought if I could loose the weight that would possibly cure the apnea and hence, the anxiety and finally keep the BP down. In August of 2018 I called the Bariatric doctor to schedule a consultation. At that point I weighed in at 205. My insurance required my BMI a minimum of 35. I just missed that. As ridiculous as it sounds, I deliberately gained enough weight to qualify and I started my journey. On 2/15/19 my weight was 225 so my first 20 pounds was going to take me to the weight that I was when I made the decision to have surgery. I got back to 205 on 3/24 which was just a couple of days past 5 weeks. That’s when I started to get excited. Now everything is gravy and real weight loss from this point. So today is April 9 and I am at 202.6. It has taken 16 days to loose 2.5 pounds. Yikes!! So slow! Especially when I read others journeys. I am doing everything right as far as protein, water, activity, etc. I’m hoping that my body sat at 205 pounds for such a long time I’m just sitting on a hump with a bit of a stall. I love reading all of your stories and hope I can join you in the winners circle at some point.
  4. I was low on Vitamin D and folate. My Dr. prescribed 50,000 units of vitamin D once a week along with a daily dose of folate. I only had two months of the vitamins before my 4-04-19 surgery and it was not delayed because of it. I was never low on iron though so you might want to call your Dr. and ask them. Also taking a multi-vitamin will help keep your levels up.
  5. Ok so im almost 8 months out and i am 4 pounds away from the goal the dr and nutritionist set for me i feel i wanna go 10 pound more so a total of 14 more pounds these last 4 pound have been very stubborn to move i will keep moving forward with my goal in mind as well as the drs i no longer take any meds for bp or pain pills for knees or back best of all no pain what so ever feel pretty good over all thanks for reading every one this is a great support for me before surgery and after thank you all
  6. And now, I'm ecstatic to be in my friend's hand-me-down size 12 jeans! American Eagle ones, which I would NEVER buy for myself. And they are not tooo tooo tight, they are comfy and on the looser side, so maybe a 10 soon? Size 10 is the smallest size I ever wore as an adult!! I am so glad I did this!

    Introduction

I am also in Canada at Toronto Western Hospital Bariatric Program. It takes about 10-12 months give or take from referral to surgery. It's a long process as it's funded by OHIP and they need to be sure we are fully prepared for the surgery and the new lifestyle we will be living afterwards. That said, I took about 2 yrs to actually have the surgery due to life and personal things going on. I ended up having my surgery yesterday. Can't remember when I started the process but it was about 2 yrs ago. Sent from my LM-Q910 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. most people temporarily gain weight after surgery. It's fluid - those IV fluids, especially, since those bags contain sodium, which makes a lot of people retain water. I had phase 2 of plastic surgery last week and gained 10 lbs while in the hospital from the IV fluids. It took a week for it all to leave my system.

    Introduction

6 months does seem to be the norm in the US. I was referred to my bariatric clinic a little over 2 years ago, and I've been in my program for 19 months, with surgery next month. But I'm in Canada, and it takes a while to get elective surgeries here.
  11. Hello all thank you for posting great info I have learned alot. I was sleeved 3/18/2019 and have some severe complications. I am getting revised today to bypass. Hope this helps. I had severe acid and bile reflux. I was unable to eat or drink. Currently waiting to be wheeled off to the ER. This was unexpected. I was well researched on the sleeve.. now to research RYGB. Thanks again for sharing all the great info Just wanted to add I'm 5'06" I weighed 233 on my surgery date and weigh 206 today.
  12. I want to thank all of you for posting all this information. I go in tomorrow morning 4/10/19. For a Sleeve to DS revision. I am at 440 right now and my high prior to the sleeve was 535. August of 2017 - I was down to 390 - then was in a bad car accident with a mild TBI and I have a disc bulge and loss of sensation in my thumb and pointer finger. I was so depressed I put the weight back on. I've tried since February of 2018 to get the DS, but the one hospital didn't tell me they weren't considered a COE until five months into the process. I was lost and went back to the original hospital I got my sleeve from. I didn't have to, but I went through the 6-month weight loss. Kicked Coca-Cola. That's probably the best part. I've lost 18 pounds on the 2-week liquid diet and was told by the PNP that I will be able to eat pretty close to normal after the surgery. I'm honestly craving barbacoa and cooked purple carrots lol. Actually, right about now, I'm thinking of eating my desk at work. I'm on a clear liquids only diet today. I look at today... like... well I've gone through physical, emotional, and mental hell the last two weeks. What's one more day? For some reason, I keep having nightmares about dying. I know I wont, but I'm a person that operates on high anxiety. (Especially when I can't eat to comfort myself.) I am also a very strong willed person and know I have a huge road ahead for me. I need to get in the mid-200's, if not lower. My PNP said I should lose 180 pounds in a year. I like a challenge and so I want to lose 200. I'm not naïve and know this road will be very bumpy. I've tried to warn my wife about the gas, but I'm pretty sure she will experience hell soon. I am encouraged to read about your recoveries when doing revisions. I was super worried about that. I have about 2 1/2 weeks off of work after today. So, I should hopefully have some idea what I will be experiencing when I eat certain foods. I do like to workout and unlike some, I've seen increased weight loss when I do workout. I stay to more cardio and when I weight train I do it in a circuit and constant motion so my heartrate is staying in the cardio zone. It's a tip I learned from a professional weight trainer when I was in my 20's. It really cut me up then and I know now, approaching my 40's will hopefully continue to work. Some stats about me: Name - Josh Weight - 440 Surgery - 4/10/19 Married 1 daughter, but trying for one more - hopefully in July. Age - 38 - birthday in July. I started crying at my desk this morning, thank god I have an office I can close. I'm an emotional guy. Thanks for all the inspiration and I look forward to posting updates.
  13. I wasn't required to lose any weight just not to gain any which I did & now losing..my surgery is on 4/19. Good luck Sent from my SM-G925T using BariatricPal mobile app

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Good Morning everyone! Congrats to all you We are surgery twins 2/20/19 but I've only lost about 19 pounds. I'm losing very slowly and admittedly, I'm jealous of other's progress, and now you are on my list too! But I started at a lower BMI so I knew that could happen. I need to incorporate exercise; I think that would help a lot. Thanks for sharing your progress!

    BPD/DS anyone?

My wife had a BPD/DS about fourteen years ago, plus a couple of years of unsuccessful insurance games beforehand (insurance considered it to be "investigational/experimental" at the time despite ASBS acceptance) so I guess you can say that we have been in the DS culture for a while, lol. A couple of good resources to learn more about it would be: https://www.dsfacts.com/ and https://www.dssurgery.com/resources/videos/ On the gas/odor/diarrhea issue, it is a potential DS thing, but tends to be overblown by some surgeons who don't perform the procedure working to sell potential patients on those that they do perform. What they conveniently fail to mention is that the RNY is subject to the same problems for the same reasons - incomplete digestion and disrupted gut biome, particularly in the early days. "Never trust a fart" is a well ingrained part of RNY culture, and one can also do a net search for the Al Roker White House Shart story. Often, in both the DS and RNY worlds, patients report that this aspect is particularly sensitive to refined white flour products (which we shouldn't be eating anyway). Diarrhea should never be a problem with any of these procedures as that reflects some kind of bacterial problem, and can yield dehydration problems but stool consistency can be variable. The DS specifically malabsorbs fats, so many go whole hog, or more on "full fat everything" and bacon with everything, etc. which can yield loose stools if the diet is overly fat. One doesn't normally need to go overboard with low fat products with the DS, but the normal balance point between constipation and overly sloppy stool is shifted more toward the fat side than with the normal anatomy. We have a dinner support group most every month with primarily 10-20 year post ops in the back room of a local restaurant, and have never gotten "gassed out" of the place, but it can be smellier at times than we normal folks (not that we are never sweet smelling ourselves!) but it was worthwhile to install a higher capacity exhaust fan in the bathroom! In short, yes -this can be an "issue" but not an insurmountable one, and not one that is all that unusual compared to other malabsorbing procedures. The other main compromise with the DS is that it is more demanding of the patient to be compliant with supplementing and lab follow ups. As I noted above, we are in regular contact with numerous long term post-ops and all are overall doing well healthwise (considering that all are fifteen years older, give or take, than they were when they had surgery - that always takes a toll!) but warnings are brought up from time to time by the docs that they just saw a patient who they haven't seen in some years having some odd problem that nobody seems to be able to diagnose. Yes, it is usually some odd nutritional deficiency or imbalance that should have been picked up if they had done their labs regularly! If that type of responsibility is a potential problem then it would be better to go with a less altering procedure that is not as demanding - we did have one gal in our group who needed to have her DS backed out to fundamentally a VSG because she was unable to adequately keep on top of things and was suffering as a result (something that probably should have been picked up in the psyche review....) The good side (really good side) is that the DS has much better regain resistance than the other mainstream procedures, so if one has a long history of yo-yo dieting, or substantial metabolic problems, then it is a better procedure than most others if one can live with the more demanding follow up needs. I went with the VSG instead because I had lost about a third of my excess weight while getting my wife on the table and kept that off for several years, so it didn't seem that I needed the extra power that the DS offered (still maintaining that after eight years) -different procedures for different needs.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Holy cow you guys have been busy! So I weighed in this morning and I lost a whole 0.2 pounds over the weekend Still, it put me at exactly 3 pounds for the week and I’ve never had a 3 pound week since week 2 so I’ll take it. Fighting a bit of constipation and fluid retention so I know there’s still progress to be made. It was a weird day and I’m attributing most of it to a lack of sleep last night. Woke up to my alarm at 6am hungry (which has never happened before) but I still didn’t have any “food” til 10 am. Even though I battled the hungries today, I had a full 11 hr shift and couldn’t risk making myself sick due to trying to eat in the morning. I literally watched the clock all day for when I could eat next. I ate at 10 am (7oz milk and 5 almonds) then again at 1pm (leftover steak bites-2 ounces weighed- and 1/4 cup cottage cheese) then I ate AGAIN at 4:30 (7oz more milk) then had a Pilates class after work and friggin ate again at 9pm (1 ounce Brie and 5 baby shrimp). Just logged my food and I consumed almost 800 calories today, which is a record post-surgery. I have this dread feeling in the pit of my stomach that I’m going to climb on the scale and I will have gained 3 pounds. Don’t think I can face the scale for a few more days, but I also wanted to share the bad day I’d had. Gonna try to hit bed very soon because that alarm is going off again at 6am and I don’t think I can stand 2 hungry days in a row. I did drink lots of water and right now I’m finishing up a bottle of water which will put me just over 84 oz for the day.

  20. So I started my weight loss journey at 144 kgs, and came to 95 10 years ago, since then i have been very active and maintained it, but in the last two years, i went to 110, but brought my self down to 105, from here i literally threw up any solid food or even liquid, i try to push food down with water and for the last couple of years living like this. the country i live in now we don't have specialists for biatrics so i cannot get this checked. But i feel that either my band is too tight or it has slipped, i have lost 10 kgs in the last year, 5 kgs in the last 2 months, and this is unexplained weight loss, i am eating everything, choclates, burgers, regular food, but i feel i cannot keep anything in, in my mind i am eating and keeping it in, but it doesn't explain the weight loss, yes i throw up (planned) a lot, i feel i am stuck and don't know what to do..what steps can i take to fix this?
  21. im with western bariatric (CA) as well my process is going good very close to getting a surgery date soon hopefully i did most my clearances i have the cardiac (april 10) and psych (may 2) visits left then surgeon is going to submit for my final approval and hopefully schedule me for surgery ! good luck!
  22. My surgeon asked for a 10% loss... 27lbs for me. It wasn't a firm expectation, and when I was struggling, in part due to one of my diabetes meds, they helped me get in to see a specialist to make some changes. Sent from my SM-G960W using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Hi all I am wondering how much people were required to lose before surgery. I go to Kaiser in Fresno and I started at 296 and I am now at 275.5. I don't have my first meeting with the surgeon until 4-22-19. I have had to reschedule it due to other things that came up. I am hoping to try and have my surgery y June. 24. Sweet I’m waiting for them to get me to go into The surgery room. Man I’m excited and I hope everything goes well. My aunt goes in after me
  25. Ok, starting a new experiment today. It's the DIY version of Dr. Valter Longo's FMD (fasting mimicking diet). I came across some sites where people are making up their own. Dr. Longo expressly warns not to do this. Cuz so many things can go wrong. But I've a hard time seeing the harm in this--except it is extremely low protein. But I'm doing EF (extended water only fasts), so this should theoretically be "better" for me rather than water only. And it is supposed to still build stem cells and allow for autophagy. His real plan is called Prolon and comes as a meal kit. But it's $250.00!!! And it's all highly processed stuff! 😯 So I need cheap and fresh! Here's his site to buy it. And here is his book where he talks about the FMD and longevity. Longevity Diet. And here's the site to the girl who did her own FMD plan. I downloaded her spread sheet and made my own. It's a giant PIA honestly. You have to have very specific measurements of macros and sub macros. LOL. And honestly, my diet today calls for about 848cals and I've no idea if I can get them all in! I'm only working on the first meal now (18:6 today), and I'm already full. Which means the rest of lunch (let's just call it 2nd lunch) has to be eaten as a snack and pushes the snack back. So have to go figure it all out! But lunch was absolutely gorgeous and all for 330cals (8g prot, 21g fat, 28g carbs, 8g fiber, 12g sugar--only naturally occurring sugars in veg/fruits). I think the volume is just too huge to eat raw. So I will need to think up some cooked meals instead so that I can reduce the volume of the veg. Here's the site for the DIY: GenX Life Is Good . She's also on YouTube with it -- you can google her. Here's lunch. I was able to eat the soup (total slider) and 1/2 the salad (salads are pretty sliderish for me, but this has a lot of dense fiber veg). The rest of the salad will be afternoon snack with more added fat. And here's the after: Ha. I've no idea if this will work. It was fun "cooking" it. Super easy soup throw down. I just poured everything into a pan. Here's the Butternut Squash Soup recipe ingredients. Simmer for 5-10 minutes and garnish with cilantro if you want.
