    Fill or Not?

For me, just a local anesthetic in my port...then a fluid check. ( Add or remove). about a 10 minute visit Ps. No my insurance does not cover the $300 fee each time... Ouch
  2. I think operations can be scheduled within four weeks. At least that was what I was told when I called and asked how long would I have to wait. I had the consult date just before Christmas and made my decision at the end of the year. Had my date Feb. 01/07. I could have had a date in January, but I was afraid of the TO weather. Seems I got my band before the cold winter blast came. No question the less waiting time the better. Doddie

  5. Can this really happen? :cry I went for pre-surgical testing on Thursday and yesterday received a call that my white blood cell count was a little high (the nurse said 10 was normal; mine was 12). They are going to test again on the morning of my surgery date and if my count doesn't go down, surgery could be postponed. I don't feel like I have a cold, or anything wrong with me at all, but I guess I'm fighting off something. I'll be so bummed if I get another date. I'm going to take zinc lozenges, drink lots of fluids, and rest this weekend.
  6. Hi I just begun my journey and decided lap band is best for me, I have a BMI of 54 (ugh), going through Kaiser to have procedure done and insurance say's I'm covered, checked 3 seperate times now to make sure, DR is writing my referral for the surgery once I complete the introduction class in a few weeks, began working out riding excercise bike 8-10 miles a day for 40 min and jogging in pool for another 20-30min evry other day, and started 1200 calorie/day diet hoping to drop some lbs in advance to get the ball rolling and get used to whats instore, been cutting my food into tiny pieces, and chewing to mush to used to that, I've had enough of being fat Anyone else gone through Kaiser or can offer what I should expect in coming weeks, I do know I will be required to lose 10% I was told of current weight, is this true I have read some posts that drs just want you to make an effort and lose what you can before surgery, basically what am instore for in coming week, tests, physc exam? etc thanks
  7. As we approach 2014 I thought what a great idea it would be to reflect on where we've been and what we've done and where do we want to go from here. 2011 was the darkest times for me. I could hardly stand up for 10 minutes at a time and walking the grocery store was a real chore. My Wife ended up doing the shopping and I sat in the car. Helping her into the house with the groceries was another chore where I had to sit and rest and catch my breath. I HAD to do something. I was convinced I was heading down a path which led to a grave. I was so fortunate that I had no health issues aside from being morbidly obese. For such a long time it was all about the numbers on the scale and at times my lack of patience derailed my enjoyment of the actual journey and let me just say what an amazing journey this has been so far. There is nothing I would change except perhaps doing it sooner. This past year: I have lost 127lbs in 2013 I am 1lb...Yes 1 from a goal I set back in October 2011 I participated in a 5K for Breast Cancer Awareness I have dropped so many pants sizes this year that I can’t remember how many Attended several concerts and never once got concerned about seating or walking Attended my first NFL game Finally saw NYC at Christmas time and walked 10+ miles to boot Dressed up in Tux for a Wedding this past summer in the scorching 100 degree heat and loved it Arthritis in my knees have not flared up in well over year I went from being stared at like a circus attraction to hardly being noticed at times I can walk for miles and climb many steps without getting winded I feel like I have the energy of a teenager at times I have become a better husband/friend to the love of my life. Not only did she support me even in the darkest times but she also motivated me in wanting to be a better man for her. She inspired me to reach within and find the trapped man inside. 2014 I would like to see 199 on the scale but either way I am and will be happy!! Putting together a team for Relay for Life event in August I am going to do for Kelli what she did for me and that is support her along her journey and be her rock! Hope you all have a safe and happy holidays....
  8. 2013 has been good to me in a lot of ways. New job. lowest weight in 10 years. 2014 is going to be twice as good.

How often do you get a fill?

    # of fills is not the question...I have a friend who has had about 10 fills,,,,bet her Dr. only gives 1/2 cc every month....so after all this time she only has 5 cc's total.... MY Dr, had no reservations about what his goal was once after the surgery and all healing has taken place...and tat was to get me into the Green Zone so the band would start to do what it was designed to do..... One month after surgery, he gave me my first fill of 4 cc's....a month after that was my 2nd of 2 cc's, and one month after that was my third, and final fill, of 1 cc....total of 7 cc's in 4 months after surgery...put me in the Green Zone, although it took me another 2 months at least to adjust myself and get everything in "Sync' for it to become all leveled out and easy..... That was over 2-1/2 years ago...have not had a fill since....and have not had any difficulties with stuck episodes, sliming etc, for about 2 years now...once I got it all figured out and learned how to live within that Green Zone.... But those first few months were hard and frustrating as hell, sometimes getting stuck 2-3 times a day...but I knew it was me, and not the band...it was me who had to change if I wanted this to work....and it was Hard!! Since then it has been the EASIEST thing I could have do to loose all my weight and return to a normal weight and healthy lifestyle....no more struggles.... I do not regret this decision at all....although in the beginning I was not so sure....
  10. Just got my info today. I get 2 shakes (their brand only, I think) mixed with Water only. NO MILK!! These are in place of 2 meals. I get a 3rd meal consisting of 4 ozs of my choice of Protein (any meat, eggs, cheese or fish). They gave examples of protein as lean beef, steak, veal, turkey, chicken, any kind of fish, cottage cheese, eggs, and cheese. We are also allowed 1/2 cup of non-starchy vegetables. They gave examples of broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, green Beans, salad greens, and cucumbers. NO FRUIT, PEAS, CORN, POTATOES, TOMATOES, OR OTHER STARCHES!! We also have to take a Fiber supplement, 8 chewable orange (ugh!!!) Vitamins per day and 200 mg of CoQ-10. We must drink 64 ozs of liquid (no coffee, decaf coffee, tea, or soda). No carbonated beverages. We can also have 2 servings each of SF Jello, SF Popsicles, and broth per day in between meals. I'm pretty much typing this verbatim from my preop instructions.
  11. I have been given my pre-op diet instructions from my surgeon! He said that I need to do this diet for at least 10 days, and can do it longer if I so choose to. I would like to "try" to do it for a month. In part, to try to get my body a little ready for a big change. And also to lose weight and be as healthy as me and my fatty liver can be! So tell me... What is your pre-op diet like, if you have one? WHAT are you eating for your one "meal"??? And do you think a month is doable? Too long? I believe it's going to be insanely hard to get used to, so I want as much time to adjust as I can get! Here are my guidelines: 30g or less carbs 60-70g Protein minimum 2 shakes per day 1 lean protein meal per day 64 oz Water per day Snack can be SF Jello
  12. I loved to eat. Eat anything and everything. food was my comfort, something that never let me down. After the sleeve surgery eating habits change dramatically. I realized after surgery that the loss of my eating habits was something I had to mourn. I missed eating whatever I wanted. Fast food, beer, buffalo wings, pizza, Cookies. That part of me is gone forever. I don't miss it, but it was a loss and it takes some time to get over it. No matter how prepared you think you are you're still not. The change was so abrupt that I didn't know what to do. Now I think very carefully about everything I eat, when I eat etc. Eating is completely different now and always will be be to keep the weight off. I have been at goal for 19 months. The cliche is true that nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Wearing size 6 jeans feels a million times better than beer and wings. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  13. I weighed 200 lbs when I made the doctors appt...197 a few weeks later when I walked in his door. I told myself every year on my birthday that THIS year I would lose 50 lbs. The problem was that I have been telling myself that for 15 years! I had surgery 3 months ago this week and I have already lost over 40 lbs. I feel decades younger and can't believe how much better I feel. I saw the doctor this week and my blood sugar is now in the normal range! If that isn't great enough, I went shopping last week and bought a couple pair of slacks in a size 10. I've been in 12s for a month or so but they are getting too lose. It has only been 3 months! It feels like a miracle to me and eating small meals feels normal. Can you tell I am thrilled?! You have to be sure you are ready and I put off the surgery for over a year because I was sure I could lose the weight on my own. (I didn't) When you get ready we are all here to support you! Good luck.

    Lap Band on 10/22

I just had my surgery on 10/14. Answers to questions: 1. it is normal not to go #2. I am doing liquids for 2 weeks so there is no food to cause you to have a bowel movement. As you introduce foods, you will start once again. They also say that a diet high in Protein can cause constipation but everyone is different. My doctor recommends a stool softner and a mild laxative to help. 2. To get the gas out of your system, they suggest to walk, walk, walk. 3.When you burp, it may feel like that. Remember you had major surgery and disrupted your tummy. It may take time for things to heal. 4. There are protein supplements that you add to Water, I haven't tried any myself but you could check out the various wesites that offer Protein powder or a health food store (like GNC) where they sell them. Good luck!!

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

you are going to love it there! They all treat their patients so well and Dr. Campos is sleeved too. I didn't need any help as I felt just great by the time I got home from the hospital. I hope you do too. Things to have when you get home, are sf popsicles, and hopefully you'll be able to stand some sort of protien drink to get some Protein post op. A lot of people don't like Isopure, but it's full of protein and I didn't think it was all that bad. It's not anything I would want long term, but for 10 days on clear liquid, I could handle it. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any other questions. I adore Dr. Aceves and everyone at that hospital. I would love to go back just for a visit!

Do you ever regret your surgery?

[quote name=Lisa ' timestamp='1358359455' post='636771] I am 15 months post op and have been in a stall for over 3 months now. I know that the reason I'm not losing right now is b/c I'm snacking way more than I should be. What's great is that I haven't gained ANY weight!! I'm also at, what I believe, is my "set point" (the weight my body wants to be at). In the past when I've gotten to this point, I give up and I gain it all back. Now, that doesn't happen!! My only regret is that I waited so long to do it!! I would do it all over again in a heart beat!!! I am right where you are one year out. Not stalled because I did drop a pound or two in the last couple months, but it's been horrible slow and I think my body is very happy where it is. I also think I have 10+ pounds of extra skin to boot. I do not regret this at all. I know for a fact that I could not have lost this weight on my own, let alone keep it off. On the note of missing food in type or quantity: I am still a total foodie. I still love to cook and love to eat. It's just that I am physically unable to eat in quantity and have attached my cravings to foods that are so much healthier. To me, it's turned into a hobby --- looking for new ways to make really good high Protein meals. The lady that calls herself "Eggface" was instrumental in realizing that I could lose weight and still be a total foodie. She has a website and Facebook page.
  18. Hi everyone! My name is Krista, I'm new to the board. I am from the east coast of Canada where the wait time for surgery is 10+ years, so I have made the decision to have surgery in Mexico. I have narrowed it down to two surgeons, Dr. Kelly or Dr. Ponce DeLeon. Both seem very qualified and well respected. I have been keeping up on various message boards, and it sounds as though Dr. Kelly is handling patients himself rather than using a coordinator. I filled out the contact form on his website asking for information, and received an automated reply from A Lighter Me instead of Dr. Kelly. Is he still working with them? He isn't listed as one of the surgeons on their website. Is there an alternate email address where I might be able to contact Dr. Kelly himself to gather more information? Also, I have heard glowing praise for Dr. Ponce De Leon's coordinator, Trish. Would anyone have contact info for her as well? One question I'd like to ask them is how long of a waiting list they have. Is it a matter of weeks or months between booking and the big day (I need to get my passport arranged, so I'm wondering if I should rush it or not) Also, what is included in the $5500 that he charges? Do they arrange my hotel stay after surgery or am I on my own for that? I'll be bringing hubby with me, will he be able to stay with me in the hospital? I think that is it for the questions part of my post. I do have a few concerns as well. I'm confident in both Dr. Kelly and Dr. Ponce De Leon's abilities, but I have never had major surgery before, and have never been on a plane before. My hubby spent the better part of three years in Afghanistan so he's well practiced in air travel and assures me it's no problem, I guess it's just a fear of the unknown. Has anyone else been in the same situation? Thanks in advance for any advice, aside from the butterflies in my tummy, I'm getting super excited! Krista
  19. Did you go through with it? I really like him too and have my surgery scheduled for 10/28.

    Almost 3 weeks post op!

I too was sleeved on the 9th and since surgery I have lost 11lbs like you. I lost some on the pre op diet so I am happy with my total loss so far. What I am most pleased about is that I have broken the triple digit mark (I now weigh less than 100kg!! and am only in double digits - btw I live in Australia I know what you mean about being so busy, or maybe too busy, my kids are aged 10, 3 and 11 months. I only just went back to work today after surgery but cant complain having had such a good break/recovery. My 10 yr old and my biggest child (husband) have been super helpful, so that has taken the pressure off. But picking up my 3 yr is hard, he is too big and heavy so soon after surgery. I am a total shocker when it comes to the scales as I weigh daily - although there isnt a loss every day, it is consistently going down. The scale and I are friends now cos its going down as opposed to only ever going up. I think though, if you're experiencing incision pain, that's definitely a cue that you need to take it a little bit easier on yourself. Take care and all the best on your journey!
  21. Hi all. I had the sleeve on April 9th and I'm feeling great. My weight on the day of surgery was 233 and now I am 222. I've hit a stall for a few days so I hope that's just temporary!! I am a mom of two small children ages 19 months and 4.5 years. It has been going fine but I do find myself hungry beyond what my programs says to eat (only 1/4 cup 3x a day) so I have been adding in a few extra bites here and there if needed. I have pcos and have had it since I was 15 years old. I will be 34 this year! Lately some of my incision pain has returned and some back pain. It could be from my attempts to be super mom and I need to slow down. Life is busy though with little kids! Hoping to make a few buddies as we journey this crazy adventure together!

    suggestions on morning restriction

I have the same problem. I have to drink warm or hot liquids first thing. Then I can eat around 9 or 10 am. If I don't drink enough liquids I have trouble eating later too.
  23. Had my band to sleeve conversion on 10/20. Unfortunately I had a motorcycle accident five days before. So, although no broken bones, I was still allowed to have surgery with a very purple painful right side. Surgery went well, swallow test went well. Right now I'm still on liquids. The horrible stuff they gave me for my swallow test made me throw up and have some dry heaves. I told my doc that I was scared I might have weakened the staple line. He said it should be OK that it would take all day heaving to damage the staple line and sutures. I am having watery stools since the op. And some burning in my stomach after eating/drinking. Anyone else have that problem? OK now for the reason for the conversion. I had the lap band put in late 2004. In three years I lost sixty pounds. I am a 54 year old male who goes to the gym three times a week and does martial arts at least twice a week. I'm active and am not hindered by any severe physical ailments. Just the usual scoped knees, rotator cuff repair, etc. Based on what I ate and my activity level my docs and more importantly me, felt I should have lost 100lbs easy. We kept closing up the band until it got to the point where it was too tight and I had bad reflux and food was in my esophagus as much as in my stomach. Previous to that I had tremendous acid problems and was living on Protein pump inhibitors. I also contracted 13 ulcers and an h pylori infection. After visiting some different docs, including gastros, we all were convincing that the benefit of the band had reached its limit. I was one of those who hit a wall and the band was actually causing harm. Fast forward, Dr. John Sweeney at Emory Hospital in Atlanta did the surgery this past Monday and here I am on the forum on Friday. I'm 5 10 and around 265 now and I just want to get to around 200lbs. My main reason for weight loss is my diabetes. About six years ago I topped out at 378lbs and despite losing over a hundred pounds my diabetes has not been improved one bit. Very discouraging to say the least. I'm going to keep on going though, keep moving in the exercise dept and keep learning how to cook and eat more healthy utilizing a more fresh organic diet. I love Dr. Weil, Dr. Jordan Rubin and that crazy Gary Null. The only anxiety that I have about the sleeve at this point is staple line failure. Does anyone know whether you come to a point where if you haven't leaked by now you never will? __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com
  24. My surgeon is extremely strict, yet conservative. He firmly believes that you need to walk 60 minutes per day, starting the day after surgery. He is fine if you walk really slow and he's also fine breaking it up into 6 10 minute walks. The day after surgery I walked 20 minutes 3 times...after 3 days, I was walking 30 minutes, twice...I get bored walking so every day I break it up into 2 30 minute walking sessions. I have had quite a bit of success since April 3rd (down 40 lbs). Walking will not hurt your band, it will only help you get that gas out of your system and jump start your success...

    New Scale -- Uh Oh!

Thanks you guys! I'm going to weigh again tomorrow and see if there is still that big a difference. If it is only 1 lb different I won't change anything but if it's two or more I will. I do like my new scale and in the long run a few lbs isn't going to make that much of a difference. My old scale only measured in .5 lb increments and my new one goes to .10 lb. Increments. Now that I'm past the first month post op I am going to cut back from daily weigh ins to once or twice a week. So lesson learned for preops -- buy your nice scale before surgery so you can avoid disappointments down the road!
