    April 2019 Surgeries!

It's so inspiring reading all the April Babies' reports getting ready for, undergoing and coming out of surgery. My surgery was April 1st, and now I am leaving this wonderful forum, but I want to leave you all some encouragement. WLS is a huge step. It's intimidating at first. There are so many tasks, so many changes, there is so much to do. It all seems "too much" some times ("too little!" at others). You may or might not be supported. But please let me let you know something: if you do what your surgeon and NUT ask, and trust your body, this. works. I'll leave it at this: only 10 days ago exactly to the hour I was flat on my back on an operating table under bright lights. My surgeon was bent over me with tools. So were her assistants and residents. I went under excited but worried a RNY gastric bypass might not work, that it might never stop me from eating and being so hungry. I was scared to be fat forever. I woke up in lots of pain and "retching", vomiting as my surgeon jokes with me. (She thought it was funny and keeps poking me about that, "You were really retching, throwing up in there! I saw you!") I went home. It was so hard following the pre-op diet. It's been hard following the post-op diet. But guess what. I have lost 12 pounds since April 1, and most of all, today, this afternoon, I had my first experience with a very eerie sensation. One I have not felt since I was a little kid. I am not. hungry. AT ALL. My stomach is there, I can tell it is. My body exists. It feels almost "weightless". I am still me. My life is the same (although I find I don't spend as much time indoors at my computer, I want to be outdoors in the sunshine every day, to not waste a drop of sunshine - !! - and I crave movement, activity, exercise, that alone is weird and I wonder where it is coming from, this has been gone since I was a kid!) and everything, everyone around me is the same. But my underwear is almost slipping off me, my pants are real loose with lots of new wrinkles, and most of all, I am just that. Simply not hungry. There is no. hunger. AT ALL. I can't imagine eating. If I was to try to, my stomach and my body responds, "Why?" That for me is enough. You want this surgery. You need this surgery. Believe in this surgery. It works. Thank you to my beautiful surgeon and her entire team You all saved my life. Beautiful Day Monster is free. ....... Free Edited to correct spelling
  2. Was not required a specific amount, but insurance said cannot gain weight during the 6 month pre-surgery process. (Some insurance will not approve surgery if you go below a certain bmi w/o comorbidities - that was 40 bmi for mine, so I made sure I did not lose below that before final approval. That was right before the 10 day 800 cal/day preop diet - on that I lost below the 40 bmi)

    THROWBACK THURSDAYS

This is from 10 years ago, when I was at my non-pregnant heaviest. My hubby and I took the trip of a lifetime to NYC as a much delayed honeymoon. We walked and walked and walked through that week and I was in so much agony the whole time. I've lost and gained and lost and gained and lost since then, and today I'm 71 pounds lighter than in that picture and moving toward something that is going to help me get much healthier. This is motivation for me... never again.

    ❤ APRIL 2019 CHALLENGE❤

    10. What I like most about myself is that I never give up on myself. 11. Meal for 1 is a daily occurrence. Here is my dinner from last night Didn’t take the after shot because I ate the other half avocado this morning with a pouch of tuna and the cottage cheese got all over everything so it was looking pretty messy.

    ChampVA

to that_prime_mom, How did that work out for you on the detailed info on the diet , I am too wondering . My primary care insurance will not cover any weight loss surgery. I have ChampVa for my secondary insurance. I have tried for several years to lose this weight and have no real luck. I would loose 10 pounds or so and then would stall. I did weight watchers all last year after the 1st time my doctor recommended me and well here I am back heavier than before. I didn't pay to go and did it all on my own. I also cant succeed on will power alone. I am also hoping not to be crushed again with another 6 months. also my doctor as noted anything i have tried. Thank you

  7. Ok, this may be hilarious and I apparently didn't learn my lesson the first time I did this several years ago, BUT..... I stocked up on a bunch of "sugar free" hard candies and ate about 8 pieces in one sitting. I was like, "No biggie, it's less than 100 calories, right?". That's when the rumbling started, very low in the guts. They seemed to echo like a humpback whale in heat, starting very softly, but constant, ever increasing until they were able to be heard from across the room. The look that my wife and kids gave me was not nearly as priceless as the look I gave them as I started the 10 yard dash to the bathroom. I won't go into the rest, but I recall a scene from Dumb and Dumber when Lloyd got back at Harry for stealing his date by dumping Turbolax 3000 in his coffee.... It was just as violent. There's no dignity coming out of the bathroom afterwards, I tell you, but I should have remembered what sugar alcohols do to me when I over-indulge... That is a lesson I am not going to forget again, I hope....OMG 💩💩💩

    ❤ APRIL 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Think I have been doing this a long time, Tomkitten is on a Normal Person diet plan but Baby I sure am not! Only one meal in 5 do we converge much, otherwise I feed him and try to fix something else MS Precious Pouch will not regurgitate. Tomorrow is EGJ #10 or so, let's hear from Dr Noria the current state of my innards. Ulcerations still or healing? Pouch, less swollen, less red, ready to grow up, get destenosed and act like a Normal 7 month old Gastric Pouch? Last emesis was this Monday, tried to furthering diet, P.P. said " Oh No You Don't!" and enforced her statement with offending food" Up And Out". Few of family members used to say I was bratty 👎but I sure was a miniscule level compared with a turkey egged sized piece of gastric flesh. Every time I think she is going to honor our truce agreement, she starts up more hostilities. I used to bemoan the fact I had been not blessed with siblings, no more, she can be worse than a bratty baby brother, I believe. But I live in hope, and still losing weight, one scale said 233.1, one said 229.5, of course I love the second more, so a long way from 365+ where I started out, but never did I expect the road to there so bumpy and twisting. That makes me about 30 pounds away from Valerie the CNP goal for ME, but inside I WOULD STILL like to try for my Dream Goal of 175, can't I at least try? Best thing will be: Precious Pouch has to come along there with me, unless Drs Needleman and Noria excise her, SHE'S MY HOSTAGE! Makes the struggles I've been threw and chance for revenge on her a little sweeter!❤🍶👈😝👉

    April 2019 Surgeries!

Weight loss update!! I had surgery on April 1st and I’m down 9lbs! So 9lbs in 10 days. I feel great!!
  10. As someone who is much farther out from surgery than most are here, I can safely say you have absolutely nothing to worry about as far as “being too thin”. I’ve yet to see someone starve to death from weight loss surgery. As a matter of fact, in another couple of years statistically you will probably gain 5-10% of your body weight back. What I have seen? Dangerous vitamin deficiencies from not taking your vitamins and eating the correct amount of protein. Take those vitamins and make sure you’re getting at least 80 grams of protein, missy! I’m thinking it will make you feel and look so much better if you can get some bloodwork done and get on the correct vitamins. Good luck!

    I didn't realize when I lost weight that _____

Sleeping on the side seems to the be quite common, I can't sleep on the side without a piece of my blanket between my knees. To this day, when I take public transportation, I still tend to retract into my seat when someone sits besides me because unconsciously I still think I take a seat and a half on my own, which is not the case anymore, I must just seem very antipathic somehow :x And the only "bad" thing about the after-surgery body is how cold I always am. Winter has become a true enemy of mine, I wear layers and layers of clothes, scarves, gloves, and yet, I am always shivering when the temperature reaches below 10°c... Which is quite unfortunate since Belgium is not the warmest place on earth!
  12. This is pretty typical... exercise is very low because I'm recovering from a catheter ablation and prolapsed disc. I will be gradually upping my step count ... April 2019 Surgeries!

Just had my sleeve done Wednesday (4/10) at 10:30am. I’ve had little pain at the site, but I’ve felt the gas pain in my chest and back. Dinner was a few sips of unjury chicken soup (it’s a delicious broth) and a few sips of crystal light. Ice has been my friend! It’s great because it melting slowly in my mouth gets it to go slowly down. Getting the chewable vitamins and liquid meds down is not fun. I get a stab of pain with those things. Things I’m using at hospital: - PJs and my own shirt - my own underwear and pads. Yes, I started my period. I can’t bend enough with the soreness to use tampons. - biotene - lotion - chapstick - phone - headphones - external battery to charge phone and short cable (it can sit right be me on my table within my reach. So far I have not read using my iPad, but likely will a lot later today. I brought my laptop but asked my husband to take it home yesterday because I definitely don’t need it. I also haven’t used the robe I brought because I’m in PJs and don’t need it. I also haven’t worn the flip flops I brought. I just walk the hallway with the hospital slippers.
  15. I was wondering if anyone has had a revision done in Mexico? I had the gastric sleeve done 10 years ago. I have unfortunately gained back all the weight. I am looking for the best bariatric surgeon in Mexico to do a revision for me. But, there is so much info out there I dont know what to believe. If you have had a revision of any kind done by a surgeon in Mexico can you please let me know where and who you selected? If you are pleased? Thank you so much.
  16. Any fears before WLS? After? What did you fear the most. How did you overcome them? Did any actually come through? I'm so excited for this opportunity to change my life for the best but honestly I'm scared as hell. I reside in nyc have a great medical team working with me but still I'm scared. The closer I get to surgery date the more I think about it. Not knowing the outcome 5-10-20 years from now is killing me. I played out my life after surgery about a 100 different ways in my head. LOL I'm scared of the unknown. HW 278 (three weeks ago) CW 266.5 Surgery date 4/19 Sent from my SM-G925T using BariatricPal mobile app

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Thanks for all the responses on this so far. I was on pantoprazole for about 10 years prior to the bypass and was also told I could stop taking it after 4 weeks or so. I was told to take it after surgery to ensure that I would not get an ulcer. I am going to have to call my doctor on this one. I want to get rid of GERD for life!

    February 2019 weight loss buds

That is interesting how different practices see people at different check-in points post-surgery. I saw mine at 10 days, 6 weeks, and I'll go again in May for my three-month check-in.
  19. Ok, I'm 10 days out of surgery and I've developed a bad allergy to the glue the Dr used to seal my incisions. I had to have it removed and now I'm finding it difficult to function with these itchy hives all over my stomach! Has anyone else had any problems with this?

    Considering diet change

I'm a pescatarian. Before things went to **** (I felt great the first 2.5 months, the last 2.5 months I've been really sick), I was able to get all my protein without land-based animals. I was routinely getting 70-80g protein/day. Some of my go-tos (again, when I was feeling well): greek yogurt cottage cheese (there is one that is higher protein) ricotta bake beans/lentils (although not a lot of protein here) fish/shrimp tofu So, for example, I'd have the following: B: egg (7g), small veggie sausage (9g) (sometimes with some salsa, guac and cheese) L: ricotta bake (19g) with spinach S: cheese or almonds (appx 7g) 😧 2-3 oz fish/shrimp (10-15g), about 40g of veg. S: Fairlife Milk (13g) Total: 65-70g (not including incidental protein from veg, etc)

I've recently regained some semblance of control over my eating and am eating alot healthier. How are other October surgery peeps doing? Cigna (Recent Apporval)

OMG...the dr's office called back and said they called CIGNA and were told that I had to do the 6 months, ,consecutive, yada, yada, yada and this is why it is best to 'let them handle these things' as I don't know the right people to 'talk to'. EXCUSE ME? I don't know the right ppl to talk to? I didn't call for 'basic coverage'. I called for the legally binding policy COVERING what their REQUIREMENTS ARE. Like you, I think/feel that these people should be very experienced with making these calls but the way she tried to read back policy 0051, I could tell she was very very very very confused! And she's saying to cancel the appt with the nutritionist for this month and 'just go' next month. She wants me to go back to my primary and get more 'notes' even though he wrote a letter detailing everything! I SO do not want to have a bad relationship with my doctor's staff! I never want anything like this. I just DO NOT BELIEVE this one person is truly comprehending how crazy all of this is..not even saying 'hey, this doesn't make sense...we should be hearing the same thing...let's do a conference call (which I suggested). I feel like I'm alienating them and I'm just at my wit's end here. I also feel bad for them and us as this is obviously something VERY VERY STRANGE related to CIGNA so we are all having to go through extra struggle and frustration because BOTH of us have had this same..."interpretation issue". I can't wait to hear how yours goes! I'm rooting for you. I also need to think how to...let my dr's office know..this is NOT personal and I'm not trying to argue. I am genuinely confused and I have dealt with Cigna so much in the past decade plus I work in a software industry that deals with healthcare, insurance..so I'm not a complete newbie. Am worried they now think I'm some desperate person that doesn't want to do what is required. All I have ever wanted to do was 1) Do what was required but more importantly 2) ensure that this decision was right for me and that I was 'right' for it. Right as in ready. Right in my head space, right in my willingness to work hard, right to meet and EXCEED the requirements from CIGNA as this was not an easy decision and I"ve spent 4 yrs exploring all options and am at peace with the work I've put in, where I'm at emotionally and mentally and the agreement and research with other specialists and doctors I've seen. 1 You reacted to this × Quote KarenLR75 Intermediate Member Pre Op 5 24 posts Location:TX Height:5 feet 6 inches Report post Posted just now Just got off phone with CIGNA. They reviewed MY specific coverage and stated that this Is NOT one of their requirements. We stepped through ALL of the requirements for their current policy which is effective thru 7/15/19. I have a downloaded copy of the specific and current policy regarding bariatric surgery. The CIGNA rep on the phone was mystified as to how the dr's office feels that the 'six months with a nutritionist' is a requirement. I called Dr. Dyslin's office staff back and was chided a bit for 'calling the insurance' which honestly upsets me. The young lady was nice but she is NOT proficient with reading/understanding medical verbiage and what it means. She said she and her office manager are confused YET they are looking at the same policy (policy 0051 for me) and they don't understand IT!!!! Said they will call insurance to check again but advised that I NOT CALL the insurance to 'get things confused'!! CONFUSED??!! I've been studying this for four years and since I am end up hospitalized every other years for the past several years I've become very INSURANCE PROFICIENT. I like Dr. Dyslin but if his staff is so GREEN they can't interpret to me what is CLEAR AS DAY to both myself AND CIGNA....I'm a bit concerned I may need a different office..and I really liked the doc!! HERE is the part they are hung up on which CIGNA said doesn't mean 6 back to back meetings with a nutritionist and I AGREE A thorough multidisciplinary evaluation within the previous six months which includes ALL of the following:  a description of the proposed procedure(s)  a separate medical evaluation and/or a recommendation for bariatric surgery from a physician/ physician’s assistant/nurse practitioner other than the requesting surgeon or associated staff  unequivocal clearance for bariatric surgery by a mental health provider  a nutritional evaluation by a physician or registered dietician surgery
