Eroded Band Removed After 6 Years
ktiggerama replied to ktiggerama's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Carla, I am feeling much better, but am still see a specialist. I have not gained any weight back, which I am happy. My doctor said it will take months to heal from all the damage that was caused. I still have stomach issues, things do not digest well. I too was having tightness in my chest and then vomiting started when I found out my band had eroded. I loved my band and was a big advocate of it, but now after almost dying I cannot say that anymore. What's is sad that Allergan should have told us this 6 years ago that the band could erode and potentially kill you. Hope everyone else that had this happen is well. -
Hello everyone, I am new here and just had my sleeve done on Jan 17th. I had a few issues so had to stay in the hospital for 3 nights. I am doing better but my tummy is still swollen. I have not gotten on the scale yet because I don't think I have lost anything yet. But I am very glad I had this done and know I will have a good outcome. I have fought my weight problem my whole life and I am hoping I have found the solution. I know this is a whole new why of life and I am ready for it.

You will most likely be glad you did it. Surgery will be rough but after heal and lose a ton of weight you will be glad you did it. I have lost over 110 pounds since my surgery Oct 22 2012. I am glad I did it.

Hi there and welcome, we are glad to have you join us. In answer to your question, yes, what you are feeling is normal. In the first week or two immediately following surgery, you are not very hungry because of the swelling. However, once the swelling goes down, you definitely get hungrier. That is because the time right now is for healing, not losing. The band is designed to work with fills. Once you start getting your fills, you will find your hunger will start to dissipate and the weight will start coming off. Prior to getting your fills, it is not unusual to not lose any weight and even gain.

I was banded by Dr. Ortiz in Mexico in January 2005. My total weight loss over the next three years was 130 pounds from my highest weight, 110 pounds after banding. My decision to go to Dr. Ortiz was cost - my insurance didn't cover bariatric surgery and I absolutely do not regret my decision. The procedure was still new in US in 2004/2005. I had a surgeon friend who performed my fills "blind" whenever I needed more restriction and we truthfully were "winging" it. I did ultimately have an overfill, but ignored the signs because I loved the weight loss. The price I paid was that I needed an emergency unfill (my surgeon friend moved to another state). I went a year with no/minimal restriction but had actually gotten too thin and needed to gain 15 pounds. I maintained that for about a year, then decided to get a fill. It was then (I only had approximately 2 cc in a 4 cc band) that we figured out something was really wrong because I became severely restricted and had an unfill again. The UGI revealed band slippage. I am waiting until after January 1, 2009 to meet with my new band doctor to decide what to do. I am self-pay because I no longer meet the criteria for bariatric surgery (or do I?). I'm not counting on BCBS to pay for this but I will probably go along with the surgeon's recommendation. I hate going into debt for this, but I hate being fat more. This is my story. Whatever I have had to go through, it was worth it to be thin again. FYI, my mother was one of the first gastric bypass patients in the US in the early 70's. She die four years ago, it did extend her life, but the quality of her life the last 10 years was pitiful. Land Band surgery spoke to my heart. I liked having my stomach and intestines and not dealing with malabsorption, etc. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who identifies with my issues and now problem of band slippage. I did it to myself - stress, overeating and mad vomiting. It still involves being able to control yourself and I wonder if I can do it without being banded. Probably not . . .

Everything you eat in the first month feels like too much, but once you see the weight coming off you'll relax. I was most hungry during week 2 & 3. How full you get is definitely dependant on what you eat. Mashed potato vs grilled chicken for example Everyone is different and some people bounce back a lot faster and are able to eat more at first. Everyone else will catch up in a few months and be getting the same amounts down. Just feel lucky you are doing well! I could easily drink liquids so I ditched the protein shakes because they left me hungry and I was just drinking calories away. I switched them out for soft foods to make me feel full. Obviously stick with what your doctor recommends but just some information to keep in mind for later Sent from my LG-H850 using BariatricPal mobile app

Pretty much the same situation with me. I was totally disgusted with myself, and the weight I kept gaining. I was afraid I was going to die of one of my health issues, and that no one would be able to lift my casket! Seriously---I worried about it! A friend and I had discussed the band, and began looking into it. She and her husband went to MX self pay within a couple of months. I was trying to get insurance to pay---so fought with them for almost a year---and ended up in MX self pay as well! By the time I had my surgery, she and her DH had both lost a lot of weight! My SIL and I went together to have it done. I do not regret a single thing about it! I'd do it again in a heart beat. I have recommended it to lots of people (who ask---I do not go up suggesting it to strangers!!!!), and have had a couple follow me! Good Luck in making your decision. Do lots of research! Welcome to LBT! Kat

I am new to the site, so hello to all. I went to see the program coordinator this past Wednesday. It went well and lasted about an hour. The nurse told me I had to do all these tests and blood work before I could have the surgery. Amazingly, I got all blood work and tests done the very same day. Luckily I hadn't eaten that morning b/c one of the test had to be fasting. The dietitian was also free for that same day, so that was great. I go see my primary care doctor this coming Monday to get checked out and get her to sign something saying I can have surgery. I go see the weight loss doctor Jan. 25. so I think I will be able to have the surgery early Feb. (I hope). How soon after you first see your doctor does he/she schedule surgery? A week or two?

I am sorry about your complications. I think you really are doing great with your weight loss. Everyone hits that 3 0r 4 week stall. Then you will start losing again. Just be patient. The weight will come off!

Is This Really Happening?!
Kim Ster replied to wndrfullife's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had the same thoughts prior to surgery.......lets face it, if we could lose the weight and keep it off we wouldnt even be considering surgery..................I love my sleeve, it forces portion control! My sleeve is the food warden! You will love it! -
Hi, I finallly decided to stop blaming everyone else for my weight problem, stop comforting myself with food when things were stressful, and stop waiting for someone else to go exercising with me. I gave up on trying to change other people and decided to accept things as they really are (instead of how I'd like them to be). I got banded Sept 3, 2008 by Dr Michaelson at the NW Weight Loss Surgery center in Everett. The first 2 days after banding I was really sorry I had it done, because I hurt. But that passed fairly quickly. Now I am really glad I had it done. The band is an excellent tool to keep me from having that piece of cake or chocolate bar "just this once". I have been sticking to the diet and have lost 16 pounds (in 5 weeks) since surgery, in addition to the 14 pounds prior to surgery. That makes 30 pounds total in 2 months. I don't anticipate that I will be losing 15 pounds each & every month, but as long as I continue in the right direction EVENTUALLY I will be down to a healthy weight. I admit there have been times when I really wanted to cheat on the diet, but I don't want to have another operation to clear a clog, nor do I want to throw up, so it really helps me stick to the diet. My biggest challange is drinking enough water. I need to fill a quart bottle & drink from that so I know how much I'm drinking each day. I continue to see a counselor to learn new techniques for dealing with stress (other than eating). And I'm learning to put myself first sometimes. It's going to be a long process, but "the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step". Jan

86 pounds is fabulous. Just try to hang on to your weight loss and not gain until your fill and you'll be fine. Think of it as being on maintenance. You've had a small set back, it'll be ok. It's not a race, it's the rest of your life. Concentrate on all the victories you have so far, smaller clothes, fewer meds maybe, walking better, looking younger etc. What is it about YOUR new lifestyle that is affecting your husband negaitively?

Non Scale Victory (NSV)
MacMadame replied to Elisabethsew's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm trying to figure out how many calories I need. I've been eating more fruit and I want to eat more veggies too. Today I had some bacon on my cheeseburger. Does that make you feel better? But no bun. I never ate the bun pre-op either so I'm not going to start now. My spreadsheets say I should maybe eat 1800-2000 but that just feels like too much. I'm eating about 1600-1800 right now. The main problem is that most of my numbers are guesses. I'm not sure what my BMR is. I wear a heart rate monitor off and on when I workout to get an idea of how many calories I burn, but it can really vary. Plus today the HRM went nuts and either read 0 or 200+. So I don't trust any of these numbers. I think I'm going to eat at this level for a few weeks and see what happens. If I am still losing, I can add in more stuff. I look right about how I want to look minus the loose skin but I wouldn't mind have 5 lb. of wiggle room. Oh and remember me when the DSers on OH start blathering on about how you can't lose all your weight with a VSG. :drool5: -

CONGRATS ... that's got to feel good. And maybe you're making your holes with hoes? That's what happens when you loose weight you know! -
My experience is that I weigh less in the morning than in the afternoon and usually try to get into the Dr's office early specifically because of the weight in.

Hi Morgan, You have come to the right place for help and support. First of all, I'm sorry for Doctor laughed at you and told you that you were too young and just need to lose weight. That infuriates me to no end. Nobody has the right to say that to anyone else. It sounds like you have had a weight problem you whole life, like most of us here. People who have never been overweight tend to find it hard to understand why we are obese. They make assumptions that we're lazy and all we do is eat. That's so far from the truth. If you went into your Doctor's office for any other medical reason do you think he would have laughed in your face. Absolutely not! When I started this journey, the first thing I did was research. I then found a local information/support group for lapbanding. When I called to register I was asked questions about my weight, height, and BMI. The woman sent me some info. in the mail. The information session was great because it walked me through the steps of everything I would have to go through such as consults and so on. Things have moved very quickly for me already. I went to my first meeting on Augsut 24th. Since then I have had my psych. consult, nutrition eval. and my consult with the surgeon is scheduled in two weeks. Find a surgeon in your area, ask if they have a bariatric coordinator. He/She will be able to assist you in what you need to do next. Search this site, you might be able to find someone from your area who can give you more info. I have met someone who lives about 5 minutes from me who has been so helpful. We have actually met and walk together at least once a week. Sorry for rambling, I wish the best! Jenn

Still deciding - almost sure...

I haven't been banded yet, but I have had many, many surgeries, a couple of them being laparoscopic. I think how quickly you bounce back after surgery has a lot to do with what condition you're in before the surgery. When I was thinner (and younger), surgery was easier on me. I had a tubal when I was 25, drove to my mom's house 4 hours away the next day, had to drive right back the same day because the idiot ex-boyfriend let my cat of the house, and then spent the next 4 days walking around the neighborhood for several hours at a time posting flyers and looking for the cat. (The cat came home on day 5, and I dumped the idiot boyfriend not long after that.) Now that I'm much more overweight and get out of breath walking up a flight of stairs, I'm fully expecting a good 3 days of complete down time. Although I don't have kids, I do have to wrangle with a very fat cat (yes, the same one that escaped for a 5 day vacation 14 years ago) every day to give him medications and sub-q fluids. I'm fully expecting that to be unpleasant for me for the first week post-op. (He's about 16 pounds.) I'm no doctor, but my best guess from my own experiences is that you'll have difficulty lifting and holding your daughter for at least a week or two after surgery. But difficult doesn't mean impossible. As for the loose skin, you'll just have to wait and see how your body adjusts to the weight loss. I have some friends who look great after losing weight and others that have a lot of excess skin. The doctors recommend waiting 1 year after losing the weight to see if your skin will tighten up. After that, if you still have loose skin, plastic surgery is the only viable option I've heard of. I don't know about you, but if the plastic surgery isn't affordable, then I'd still rather be thin with loose skin than be fat with tight skin. -
I am ready to tackle this weight loss with all that I am!:rolleyes2:

Banded on May 28th...One Week Post-Op Update
morto074 replied to fotogurl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hey, I was banded on the 28th too! I lost 14 lbs on the 2 week liquid diet pre-surgery and I have lost 10 lbs since surgery. So 24lbs altogether. I'm happy the numbers are going down but I really don't feel any difference in weight yet. I go in for my first post-op check up and fill next Wednesday. Thats also when I can start the pureed stage.
