new here and have a few questions

It would be helpful to all of us reading your questions to know your stats. You can fill that out on your profile. It consists of which surgery you had, your beginning weight and your height. It helps those who would like to answer your questions answer them properly, because sometimes the answers can vary depending on which surgery you had. Thx.

    Excess skin after WLS

I am one year out and 5 pounds from a normal BMI and I do not have any excess skin at all. I was a 35 BMI and a slow loser and I think all that helped plus I am 43. I also wasn’t at my highest weight for very long as a result of many yo yo diets.

    One Year Sleeve Anniversary!!

I am a year out as well and could also easily eat 1800 calories but I try not to because I know that would make me gain. If you do want to lose more you will probably be like me and have to measure everything out and plan snack times and make yourself wait for them even though you are maybe a little hungry. It has gotten harder for me now with the hunger hormones back, though. Congratulations on your loss so far.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

LOL yea youtube has sooooo many great videos. So many people post their weight loss surgery journey on there from pre op, even the surgery and right after the surgery and so on. Very fun to watch the differences between each person.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

There are several videos on this subject on youtube of people explaining their personal hair loss issues with weight loss surgery. I have seen some that it thins and others that lost decent chunks but it all grows back. Kinda dreading that too when i have my surgery lol. I hate hats. lol
  7. I was sleeved in 2015 and just went through the revision from sleeve to bypass about 3 1/2 weeks ago. So as I'm still in recovery mode I can't really provide a full answer all of your questions. 1. Reason for conversion: I developed a hiatal hernia where part of the sleeve had slipped up through the opening of the diaphragm into the chest cavity, which was causing chest discomfort and only allowing me to eat a couple ounces of food at a meal. After doing an EGD my surgeon was concerned enough to schedule my revision within a week. He said if they just fixed the hernia there was a high likelihood it would recur with the sleeve. If he converted to bypass he said there was a very low likelihood I'd have any further problems. I also had GERD issues from the sleeve which I wanted to address. 2. Post-op period: I'd say for me it was essentially the same. I had the same surgeon and facility which were both great. Recovery plan is the same for both surgeries (clear liquid, full liquid, puree, soft solids, etc.) I had a bit more pain with the bypass but I'm 7 years older than when I had the sleeve. 3. Best and worst part: Can't really answer this yet, except to say it's nice to lose some additional weight (I never hit my goal with the sleeve) but it's tough to have to start over with the recovery. 4. Dumping: Haven't experienced it yet, but I am just up to about 2 to 2.5 oz of soft protein so I have not been able to even try anything that might cause dumping. My thought on the revision is if you are experiencing significant GERD it is definitely worth considering. GERD can cause Barret's esophagus and ultimately lead to esophageal cancer if not kept in check. Having had a relative who died of that cancer in her early 50's I was concerned enough to want to solve it if I could.

    Weight loss after surgery

Wonderful progress! How much did you lose in 3 months before surgery? Losses in excess of 4lb per week won't be just fat loss and "stalls" while eating below replacement calories are stalls of weight and not fat loss. Scales are evil. Just my 2c.

    Sleeve or Bypass? Confused

While it is indeed standard practice to repair hiatal hernias with a gastric sleeve operation, I don't think any doctor can guarantee you that your hiatal hernia will never come back. The things I've read indicate that the gastric sleeve seems to make your stomach MORE likely to herniate (since a sleeved stomach is narrower and therefore can slide up through the diaphragm hiatus more easily than a normal stomach). I know for a fact that there are some gastric sleeve patients who have had multiple hiatal hernia repairs after the surgery (and others who were told to convert to a bypass because of their hernias). As far as the acid reflux issue, worse acid reflux is a known risk of the gastric sleeve. Some people are lucky and have no issues, but others do develop acid reflux for the first time after the sleeve or have much worse acid reflux after the sleeve. I would definitely ask him about why he thinks that this is not a concern in your situation and what his plan would be for how to deal with it if your acid reflux does get worse after the surgery. (If he tells you that you would just take a PPI for the acid if it gets worse after surgery, keep in mind that PPIs are not enough to control the acid for some people who have really bad acid reflux after the sleeve). You are smart to be thinking about these issues before your surgery. Personally, I deal with both acid reflux and a hiatal hernia after the sleeve (and no I didn't have a hiatal hernia before the sleeve - they looked for it when they did the sleeve). Knowing what I know now, I never would have gotten the sleeve. I think the bypass has stood the test of time better than the sleeve has - after decades of experience with the bypass, surgeons know the risks of the bypass and are better at managing them, whereas problems with the sleeve are often handled by just converting over to the bypass anyway. Just look at all the stories on the revision forum about people converting from sleeve to bypass because of sleeve problems: https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1302-revision-weight-loss-surgery-forums-new/

WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

The hair loss generally lasts about three months. This is the same for the people who didn’t take supplements like biotin & those who did. The hair you’ll lose is already dead & would have been shed anyway. The stress of the surgery & weight loss accelerate your natural hair loss cycle but your natural hair regrowth remains unchanged. So while you’re losing hair, you’re still growing new hair. It is only the new hair that may benefit from any supplements. During the first month you often feel weak, have low energy, experience some brain fog & shorter concentration spans. But we are all different in our recovery. A friend was back at work after a week no issue. Another took three weeks. Me, I still struggled after 4 weeks but my BP was very low (but that is my normal).
  11. My cholesterol went up too & I was also told it was because of the weight loss. They still kept their eye in it. It was back within my usual range of about 5 (had been that for decades regardless of diet or weight) once my weight stabilised. Now it’s low 4s. The back pain & other body aches are also related to your weight loss. Your body is getting used to holding itself differently. Before it was compensating for the weight you were carrying. Now it’s relearning how to stand up straight again. A friend go also had surgery & I often joke about how we still slouch a bit. We don’t have a large tummy to prop us up anymore. 😆 I also had back pain until I bought myself some new bras that fit my smaller breasts - made a big difference.
  12. How much weight did you lose in pre op? More you lose prior to surgery less likely you are going to lose a lot quickly in the immediate post op stage. Also depends how much weight you have to lose as well. Was your surgery date weight the same as your original surgery day weight?

    Weight Gain

A little late in the game but I agree with everything mentioned above. Three week stall, watwr weight, etc. as long as you are sticking to your plan it will break.

WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

There is a thread on here called “weirdest non scale victories” that you should check out. It will remind you of all the little things that will change or become easier for you when you lose the weight. It should help With some of the anxiety.

WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

My goal is 160 but I am a little taller than you and I also have bipolar and statistically we do not lose as much weight. Have you even considered bypass if You get heartburn already or is it really infrequent and the doctor thinks your fine with sleeve? I wanted bypass because you lose a little more weight but the doctor advised against it because of medication absorption. Well he left it up to me but his first choice for me was sleeve. They are both really good and relatively safe surgeries.
  16. I know that weight loss with revision is typically slower and somewhat less. Also if you weigh less on surgery day your loss will be less because you don’t have as much to lose.

WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

I have tied diets and diet pills that my gynecologist put me on. I would lose in the past. But like you I would gain all plus some back. I even asked my WL surgeon yesterday about wl shots. And he said they would not help me. I've not been able to lose weight this past year at all. I gained over 40 lbs in 8 months last year. I've not really gained any more but I haven't lost and I've honestly tried to lose. What was your wl goal? I put on my paperwork 130 to 140. Not sure if I should go up on my goal. I guess the acid reflux was the only complication I actually worried about when he was going over everything. When I do get it it's the worse feeling (I just hate it) So I wonder should I start taking something now to prevent it just in case?
  18. I had a revision from sleeve to mini bypass over two weeks ago and have followed everything to a "t" including daily walks and have lost like 3lbs!!!! When I had my sleeve 7years ago I was prolly 15 lbs down the first two weeks!!! Can someone say something to make me feel better ❤️‍🩹

How many tacos one year out?

I wish I can weigh in in only 10 days post op But I did want to say I thought I was getting in more liquids post op than I should but now that I’m weighing everything I’m really not. Maybe weighting what you ate if you can eyeball it and recreate it to get a better idea of how much you actually ate? So nice knowing I might be able to eat tacos again! Lol
  20. I have been able to eat more than expected at every given stage since my sleeve so I have to measure my portions still. At one year out I have been eating around one serving of most things. I just made dinner though and those hard taco shells from old El Paso seem pretty big for the serving size to be TWO shells?? I ate one and don’t feel full (but I never do). I am just curious if other sleevers that are over a year out would have more than one?? I guess the amount of meat you get in one shell isn’t much (I didn’t weight it).

WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

I am 5’8” and weighed 220 on surgery day. Idk about you but I know that I have tried every diet out there and may have lost but I gained that plus some. My gynecologist pulled my records for me and I gained about five pounds a year on average for over ten years (that’s as far as they could go back). I knew that if I waited I would just gain more, period. I was one year out yesterday and I am currently 9 pounds from goal (5 from a normal BMI). I never had any heartburn either and I am on medications that I was worried about how they will absorb but so far so good. Not one incidence of heartburn and medication works fine. Absolutely no regrets here.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm in Amarillo with Dr. Blue Schniederjan from Panhandle Weight Loss Clinic. Yes, can't wait until my surgery date. I could have gotten mine done earlier too, but I had to pass my cardiac test also. I had blood clots, but I finally passed the test and got my surgery date. So excited. Sorry you had to postpone yours. But, now I have a fellow Texan bariatric buddy that we can talk to going through this together. It will get here sooner than we think.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Hey. I had my surgery in Sept too. My weight loss has slowed quite a bit and at one point it stalled. What I found is that even though I didn't think I was, I was eating more than I had been and drinking more. My body had finally gotten used to the new stomach and I think adjusted itself. So I went back to the basics.... Making sure I had the correct portion sizes, weighing my food/snacks, drinking zero calorie drinks,I also added in weight lifting. Everytime I hit what I think is going to turn into a stall I retrace my steps and also add just a little (and I mean a little) more activity/exercise into my routine. I also make sure that if I'm only going to eat a little it's protein. Also, I remind myself that I'm trying to maintain my muscle and build more while losing fat so if I've lost a lot of fat since surgery it makes sense that the further out I go, the less there is to loose and the longer maybe harder it will take. You will get out of your stalls I promise!
  25. I agree with @MiniGastricBypassDude and @catwoman7 my program is a balanced diet of all food groups once you get through the post-op stages and onto "normal eating". They only stress protein first then veggies and then if you have room you can have carbs/fruits. I believe each program has their own suggestions and I am sure have their reasons. There are tons of way to loose weight but when it comes down to it, it is the calorie deficient that allows you to loose weight.
