  1. To be honest I am surprised that bands are still being fitted, despite the huge number of people requiring revision surgery. I think that more people are researching and going for sleeve and bypass but how long will it be until bands are phased out? The surgeon that, originally, dos my band doesn't do them anymore. That was in Chicago. We live in Orlando, now, and the surgeon that is doing my revision no longer does bands either. He, essentially, told me that they're crap. I would have to agree lol!
  2. March 21st! Will have surgery at Scripps LaJolla, I'm 51 and have a 12 year old. SoExcited: lots in common, I had the lapband too, my surgery will be a revision. Had my pre-op appointment today, long day, but REALLY sinking in! Good luck fellow March-ers ♡

  4. Hi all! I'm going for my first consultation with to see if I'm eligible to have a revision surgery from Lapband to Sleeve and I'm concerned about my BMI. Right now, my BMI is 34, and I know my insurance will cover the surgery if the revision is medically necessary. I'm having the worst experience with the band (chest pain, GERD, stuck with everything, vomiting, etc). I was banded 3 years ago and I lost 19 pounds with the band in some point, mostly because I was unable to passed food, but as soon as my band got deflated due to complications, I gained all the weight back. I still have high cholesterol, POS and insulin resistance. Anyone have had a revision done with a "lower BMI" in Arizona? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. Hi group. My Story is similar. I was banded in 2007. Lost 163 pounds. Was doing great until last year. I went to a surgeon in town and he sent me for an upper GI. I had a severely enlarged esophagus. I also had vomiting and bad GERD. The surgeon removed all my Fluid and I gained 35 pounds in 2-3 months. I inquired about the sleeve or GB. He was on board with removing the band because he absolutely hates them. I am in the waiting time frame for insurance to see if they pay for removal and revision. I have benefits with United health care but it comes down between them and the surgeon. He is gonna pull thru for me, fingers crossed. Keep me posted on your journey. 6. I had my lap band surgery in 2010. Over the last two years I have had nothing but issue after issue with my band. Horrible reflux, stomach pain, vomiting etc. solid is now a nightmare. I would love to get this band out of me, but would definitely want a revision to gastric bypass. Has anyone had issues and/or success with highmark bcbs in PA? I see my new surgeon next week and just wanted to know what to kinda expect, thank you all so much! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. I'm having a revision on 3/28. I to had lost 90 lbs and, then I started having problems vomiting when eating. I went back to the surgeon and I had a UGI which showed a dilated esophagus. He took all the saline out. It was like that for 3 months, and still unable to have a fill. Then it was recommended for me to have a revision. My insurance denied me at first. I typed up a 3 page letter stating all of the problems that I am having with the band. I also called the insurance company to find out what type of physician reviewed my case. It was an internal medicine dr. In my letter I requested that a bariatric surgeon review my case, and I was approved right away. I can't wait for the band to come out. I chew so many tums! Lol. Set a Date!

I actually had to sign a non-disclosure agreement about how much my sleeve cost. I will say that I felt it was a reasonable price considering Dr. Ortiz is a world renowned surgeon. There are cheaper options in Mexico, but I'm not sure major surgery is where you really want to risk it just for a slightly lower price. If you go to the Obesity Control Center Web site, there is a contact form and they will send you current pricing right away if you fill that out. At least that's how I found out about their pricing back in 2014, when I was researching VSG. I have heard good things about Dr. Kelly as well. If I remember correctly, he does his surgeries at Hospital Angeles, which is the best hospital in Tijuana. So if you prefer to have your surgery in a hospital versus a surgical center, he's an excellent option. Some people prefer hospitals because of the emergency services onsite. I actually preferred a surgical center, because of the lesser exposure to illness and infection. I was confident I wouldn't need emergency services. I was a new sleeve, btw. Not a revision.

  11. Weight loss surgery is a huge step to take and is one of the biggest life events. It's good that you're recognising the emotional effects that having surgery will impact on your life. Many of us have long-term emotional issues with food and having the option of comfort eating taken away is scary and some people grieve for the fact they can't turn to food as a coping mechanism. Then the effect on social life is another factor. I'm having surgery to revise from band to RNY. My band wreaked havoc on social occasions as there were so many foods I couldn't eat that for a time I refused invitations because being there while everyone was eating was hard for me. I also got a buzz from losing weight being more active and wearing nicer clothes so I overcame all the other the issues. 'Nothing tastes as good as slim feels ' was my mantra. I had my band removed due to GERD and tried to maintain myself but hated gaining weight and my old eating habits returned. I know life after my new surgery won't be easy but bring it on! I am so looking forward to being a loser again. Good luck to you, can you get counselling to help? Sent from my SM-G920F using the BariatricPal App

    Bypass vs Sleeve

My surgery date is next Tuesday, but I went with the RNY because I wanted the most restrictive option since I have a lot of weight to lose. My mom also had bariatric surgery---she started with the lap-band and revised to the sleeve, and she's having a hard time losing more. I'm surprised by how much she can still eat, so I definitely am happy thus far with my decision for the RNY. We'll see how surgery goes.
  14. So excited, nervous, scared a bit, but mainly excited! Pre-op tomorrow and surgery Monday, the 21st. Happening very fast! Did not tell anyone about band when I got it 4 years ago, and haven't told anyone (but hubby) about this one; been on here quite a bit lately and love seeing all the positive vibes, encouragement. Wish me luck, xo

  16. I too am in the process of band to Sleeve revision. I was banded in 2014 and about 6 months in started having issues. I actually lost more weight prior to being banded. I moved from Indiana to ohio and after a trip to the ER and lots of discomfort I am starting the process over! Upper GI says band slipped. And EGD says the the band removal and revision can be done in 1 surgery. Meeting with the Nutritionist on Thursday. Hoping for a June surgery date!!! As far as the insurance goes, it's new insurance for me but the doctors office says it shouldn't take long. She says the doctor knows how to write the office notes for easy approval. So I guess we'll see. Good luck to you on your journey!!! Sent from my SM-T350 using the BariatricPal App
  17. How much have you lost with the bypass if you don't mind me asking? And how long did it take? I am on process of fulfilling insurance requirements in order to get revision to RNY and I am nervous I won't lose will even with bypass. I have extremely slow metabolism, I hit a plateau 2nd week after lap band surgery, hearing that the weight loss is slower after revision makes me very nervous. I have about 120 lbs I want to lose to be at goal. Guess I need some emotional pick me up here I have lost 107 lbs with the bypass. I had gained back the 90 I lost with the band. It took me a year. 20. Looking for any help or experience with this issue! The pre-approval for the removal of my lap band has been denied as Bariatric Surgery (revisions, fills, etc.) is completely excluded from my insurance plan. So I suppose the initial denial is not surprising. However, my stomach has a hole in it. This will eventually escalate into an emergency-ER situation -- wouldn't insurance agree to cover in this case? Has anyone had luck with an appeal even though all Bariatric-related procedures are excluded in your plan? If there's hole in my stomach, does this not turn into something different? Any help or advice on appeal-writing is appreciated. My surgeon has a peer-to-peer scheduled for tomorrow, if that fails, I will submit the first appeal. THANK YOU!

    VSG Revision?

Yeah unfortunately I didn't lose much weight with the vsg. I've lost 70lbs so far since my revision. However I would've done it anyway because my reflux and nausea was so bad prior to. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    VSG Revision?

Losing was never a problem for me. I've lost close to 130lbs. The results of my 24 hour pH study show severe reflux (DeMeester score of 75.39 -- normal is less than 14.72). I'm really trying to avoid revision but the decision is harder and harder as the reflux impacts my life daily. I just want to feel good again Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    VSG Revision?

I am 5 months post op revision. I started having reflux (and had prior) to vsg. Took meds for it, however only lost 30lbs with it. My doctor and her practice closed when I was 3 months post op. When I did follow up was about 2 years later because my reflux had became so extreme. My md did an egd and saw an obstruction. The Endo capsule also revealed reflux 4x what was considered severe. I elected to revise to bypass per his decision. However once inside he saw no usable portion of my stomach so he took out whole stomach and made pouch out of esophageal lining (also re routed everything like a bypass). Since surgery I have had absolutely no reflux or nausea!!!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    VSG Revision?

I'm 22 months post surgery and suffering from extreme reflux. I take protonix 40mg/dexilant 60mg/Zantac 150-300mg a day. Revision to bypass is currently on the table. My surgeon has explained the science and why it works to cure the problem and I believe it will. I, however, do not want to jump into another surgery with a greater chance for complications both during and after. My surgeon performs a procedure called stretta which has shown to help minimize or eliminate reflux and have chosen to try that before jumping into surgery. I'm currently fighting with my insurance company for coverage (both for the procedure and continued coverage for my meds). It the insurance company refuses to cover and I lose my fight with the department of insurance I'll likely pay out of pocket. The Linx procedure scares me (and my surgeon agreed) I would be afraid of erosion into the esophagus. Also, it's not a good option for me as I've developed dysphagia as a result of the reflux and he's concerned that Linx would interfere with my ability to swallow. Hope you get some relief!
