    “Low” BMI Qualifiers?

You should call your insurance company and get clarification on what the requirements are. My insurance was 35 with at least one co-morbidity (I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in my pre op sleep study) or over 40 w/o any co-morbidities. At time of surgery my BMI was 41. A agree with a previous poster...check your height. I had always been 5-'5'" but turns out I was 5'-3.5". Since everything was virtual until time of surgery I just rounded down to 5'-3".

    Any July buddies?

My surgery is on July 8th and I started my pre op diet on 06/24 and for me I’m on my 6th day and I don’t even like the liquids anymore I am tired of them already, when I first started they were really good like I could chug them lol however at this point I’m forcing myself to drink the protein drinks cause I don’t even get hungry to drink those anymore but my surgery is about a week away so I’m almost there and know I can do it, I know you will be able to as well!! Good luck!

    What can I eat?

What about soups? I'm 6 weeks out and can pretty much eat anything right now but for some reason tomato soup is my go to (aside from varying the flavor of the protein shake I'm drinking). But definitely talk with your team, seems pretty restrictive to me. I wish you lots of luck!

    Any July buddies?

  5. Day 3 of my liquid diet and I am surprised how good it’s going.. it’s not easy but I thought it would be a lot harder than it is. One week to go !

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I felt pretty tender through day four. Day 5, I woke up and felt so much better. I went to work and did great. Now my only discomfort (1 week out) is just upon standing initially and when my 3 y/o or dog steps on my stomach.

Chips and salsa and bad eating day

I use the mini peppers when eating salsa or guacamole. If you eat chips, be honest with yourself and log them so they fit into your daily calorie budget (assuming you log). Just remember the surgery isn’t the fix, it’s a tool to help you make changes for the long term. I am a year and a half post op and basically went from 363 to 180. Have I been perfect, heck no! Am I more aware and have overall better habits, absolutely! What I’ve learned since my VSG is: 1. Give yourself some grace- we’re human after all 2. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good 3. One bad decision isn’t going to derail you- consistent bad decisions will! 4. Know that every day you have an opportunity to do better than the day before Good luck in your journey.

Am I doing this right am I broken?

Absolutely normal. Just white-knuckle it through the first few weeks (I recommend trying various activities to distract yourself), and I practically guarantee that a month from now, you'll feel a lot different.

    Food Before and After Photos

Everyone posting their restaurant meals and all I can think is “I could make SO many meals for that price!” Anyway, this was dinner- homemade skin on mashed potatoes and a burger with mustard and Mayo and waaayyy too sweet pickles. No calorie tracking today but ate it all. That was before I prepped 7 meals for my kids for the next 3 days. I find it easier to meal prep for them so they aren’t constantly snacking or wondering what to eat over school breaks. yogurt parfaits with berries and homemade cranberry pecan granola egg and veggie sausage mini bagels with berries Korean beef bowls (veggie chicken nuggets for the vegetarian) with brown rice pasta salad with pepperoni and salami (hard boiled egg for the vegetarian) and berries cheese tortellini in homemade tomato sauce pasta salad with roasted chicken thighs (hard boiled eggs for the vegetarian) and leftover burgers with mashed potatoes and peaches.

Am I doing this right am I broken?

Five days ago you had major surgery. Give yourself time to heal. As others have said, the first few weeks suck, but it's not forever and you will in time eat normally. But while your stomach is healing, you have to soldier through the program and hit your protein, water and vitamins. If you need something that isn't sweet, try something umami like a miso soup which will count towards your fluid intake. The sweetness of protein shakes and water drove me nuts, but I managed to offset it in those early weeks with small amounts of savoury liquid soups and unsweetened matcha lattes made on protein fortified soy milk. It's not fun, but it's doable, and you'll be onto the solid phase in no time.

Chips and salsa and bad eating day

Not the best decision in the world, obviously. But 3 at a time throughout the day - imagine what it would've been like before the surgery. The backstop worked and now you can get right back to work. And yes, the salsa isn't bad at all. As a newbie to this (one week post-op), this is actually a very encouraging story - thank you.
  13. Ugh my first bad eating day. I am just under 2 months out I’ve been cleared for everything except a small handful of things like steak. ive tolerated things fine, everything is good. my uncle made some salsa and i had a couple chips and salsa and i was a gonner i couldnt get enough! I could only eat like 3 chips with salsa at a time. But throughout the day i kept going back for 3 more. it was so good. i didn’t actually eat any real food today. i had my two protein drinks i feel guilty and im still thinking about that salsa. i wish id gotten some protein chips instead 😕 im not here for any real reason but to vent. ive got to get some structure to my eating. I have a terrible habit of living off bites and not meals with nothing measured or weighed. anyways i just thought maybe some others may have began their journey in chaos and could share their stories of getting everything under control.

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

No it’s not unusual for things to taste gross. Our taste buds can temporarily change after surgery. Things we enjoyed can suddenly taste awful & food we never liked can be delicious. Definitely try some soups. Soup seem to make you feel like your eating something more substantial. And warm liquids often are more soothing. I even used room temp or warm water to make up my shakes. Some meats can be hard to tolerate - chicken breast is the worst but others struggle with beef. I found minced meats the easiest to eat. I never understand the chew, chew, chew thing - it seems to make the meat dry & tasteless. Glad I wasn’t told to do it. Take small bites (a level teaspoon or less) & ensure the meat is very fall off the bone tender & moist. Use gravies & sauces. Yoghurt smoothies helped me reach my fluid & protein goals. Blend up a high protein yoghurt with milk to a thin easy to drink consistency. You may be in a bit of a vicious circle at the moment too. You feel nauseous so you don’t eat or drink. But not eating or drinking can make you feel nauseous. You may be dehydrated too which is a concern. What colour is your pee? If it is a darker yellow, you’ll need to go to your local medical centre for a fluid transfusion. Try a different anti nausea med. Most are quite small tablets so you should be able to swallow them at three weeks. I’m sorry your surgeon hasn’t been more supportive. And yes, definitely see if you can find a dietician.

Am I doing this right am I broken?

Major life changing surgery was 5 days ago! Don’t be so hard on yourself! Your body needs to adjust. Right now it is saying “WTF?” It might take a few weeks. Once you can start eating more solid food it should get easier.

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

Call your insurance to see if they have a dietitian you can talk to. I have Cigna & the dietitian really helped me. Your doctor should be giving you a script for Zoloft. If they don’t order meclezine 25mg from Amazon (cheapest place since the local stores only sell 12 pills in a bottle). You can get 3 bottles of 100 for $13.44. Some days I had to take the maximum to make it through, some days I didn’t have to take any.

    Stall out and depressed

I dont measure myself but I have like small goal clothes I try on periodically that are always looser when I do. I do feel though my body hasn't changed much in fact the last 3 weeks....mostly I look in the mirror and still see a 340 lb girl. Physically though I feel a lot better, ive had a surplus of energy but with the bipolar depression, mentally i have been just wanting to sleep all day thr past week. But i get up and down off the ground with ease, can run without getting out of breath, can do stairs without getting out of breath, and my knee pain is a lot better although the past week it's been flaring up which is causing me pain and discomfort. I know Physically I'm a lot better off but when that number doesn't change, I get really low and filled with despair. I need to adjust my thinking and be more accepting that the journey isn't linear. I wish my brain wasn't so messed up. Gratitude and greatfulness is everything. I am trying so hard to internalize that. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Am I doing this right am I broken?

The first few weeks are brutal, especially the parts that are all liquid. You'll get through it. But maybe try drinking warm broth (bone broth has more protein than regular broth), soups, etc. They're warm, which can make things easier, and can also help you get your protein in.

Am I doing this right am I broken?

the first couple weeks are the hardest. you just had major surgery. Need to heel up. Like Doobie said. you wont be on liquids forever. But you gotta follow the steps to make this surgery a success. For me the first month was the roughest. Then it got much easier

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I'm one week out today and only get a sting if I really move in the wrong way. But for the most part, the pain went away in 4-5 days. Every day was a huge improvement over the last. Day 1 was very painful. Hope you have the same positive experience.
  21. How are you guys drinking caffeine after surgery? I’m told not to have caffeine for 3 months. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Welcome! I am also working on my journey. Been going on 5 months so far. I have all my procedures completed. I have 1 more dietician call and then hopefully they will call with my appointment with the surgeon. Then it'll be another 3 to 6 weeks before surgery. I've found this group to be very helpful. 23. I know it's early, only 3 weeks after my bypass. But it's just been one struggle after another. I was increasing my ability to eat and drink for a little while, but I seem to be going backwards now. I can barely force myself to consume maybe 25oz of liquid and 4 bites of food a day. But I can't stand any of the protein I've tried. I found one shake that's okay but I can only tolerate about half of it and not every day. If I have a shake or half a yogurt, I can't eat for the rest of the day at all. I feel sick all the time. Nauseous, dizzy, lightheaded, weak. I use a transdermal multivitamin patch approved by my surgeon. I'm having big regrets. I know it will probably get better later but I feel like it won't ever get better if I'm only consuming water and a couple bites of food (usually yogurt, well chewed soft meat, or sugar free ice cream). I have my 1 month follow up next week. Doc is already mad I'm haven't found a way to meet my protein goals. I'm trying so hard it but it's so uncomfortable to eat drink, even water. I haven't been vomiting so I don't think there's any real problems but I can't survive like this.

    Straws

They gave me a straw at the hospital lol. Used it then and still do (am 3.5+ years out). I actually found them very useful in the first couple weeks when i was too sore to sit up and take my sips. 🤷🏻‍♀️
