    HELP NEED INPUT PLEASE!

If you've had this pain since the beginning, it almost sounds like the port was placed in a way that is irritating a nerve. Once they rule out infection or any other acute problem, maybe they can move the port to a different spot? Sometimes I'll have sensitivity around my port, but it goes away. Like Lisacaron, mine is placed right where my desk and the waist of my pants hit it. Every time I sit down, I have to pull the waist of my pants up over the port. I considered revision surgery (lower profile port placed on the underside of the muscle), but didn't want more surgery at this point. If I lose anymore weight, I may bite the bullet and have it done. Good luck to you... I hope your surgical team is able to figure this out.
  3. Thanks everyone! I'm glad I'm not alone, I was starting to get a little depressed. I had never heard of a revision until a few months ago. My mom had the surgery 17 years ago and was very successful until about 4 years ago. Her intestine had clappsed, therefor her smaller stomach reconnected with the old one. They did a barium swallow and the Dr. asked her multiple times if she was positive she had the surgey because there was no indication of her ever having it done...crazy huh? But they have to go in and do a full bypass because there's nothing to "fix" lol. The stomach is a crazy thing.
  4. I am having the revision in one surgery. I do feel different about things this time. I feel more motivated, informed and knowledgeable. Thanks!
  5. The weight really does come back faster then it goes off. I just had revision surgery because of a leak in my port cord and when I lost restriction I gained back all the weight I had lost plus some. It's discouraging. Don't give up though. It's a daily struggle but we all can do it.

    Weight Gain After Surgery?

I also had RNY and gained most of my weight back. My surgery was in January 2005. In January 2009 I started gaining after going through a horrific divorce. My life was turned upside down and I turned back to old eating habits. I could eat anything without any problem. I quickly gained back the weight. i never even thought about a revision or that my surgeon would do one since it was my own fault that I gained the weight. In January 2013 I started really thinking about what could be done. I did Weight Watchers, the gym, MFP all that stuff and nothing came of it. I called to get my medical records but never followed up. Then in July I thought I should really pursue it and see my surgeon said. I am a candidate for the revision. I am also treated like a new patient but so much has changed since 2005 I am really grateful for "starting over". I'm expecting to have surgery at the end of this month. Even though this thread is old it makes me feel soooo much better that I am not the only one that has gone through this and has had a successful revision.

APRIL 2013. Whooo's Comin' With Me!

April 29th pending insurance..... Lapband revision to sleeve. laurie
  8. Did you have a lap band? I had a revision in January and I can eat pretty much anything. Pasta, bread, and rice make me feel very full and nauseous so i dont eat them. Potatoes in any form (mashed, baked, french fried) do not go down well. feel like it sits in my chest so i avoid potatoes also. I eat all meats okay (haven't tried steak but summer is coming) but the portion size is very small. Tonight I baked chicken nuggets and was able to eat 1 1/2 nuggets and a spoon full of peas....that's it!! Some people say they do not get hungry but I am hungry a lot.

    Lap band vs gastric sleeve

I chose the sleeve over band for a few reasons - these are my personal opinions, worth what you paid for them, and not meant as a bash on the band, I am not a Doctor nor do I play one on TV: 1) The band is a mechanism, manmade, it can break. My cousin had the band and it helped to her lose 100 lbs, but then it broke. She revised to Gastric By Pass (RNY). 2) I also thought that having a port, that you can feel under your skin and needing to go for adjustments was too creepy for me. 3) It is adjustable - you can have the saline removed, this may be a positive to some, but to me that was a free ticket to quits-ville. 4) It is reversible, done with the new lifestyle? Have it removed - again free ticket to quits-ville. 5) Restrictions on what you can eat - with Sleeve once you are healed there are no dietary restrictions in terms of stringy vegetables or dry goods. Some people look at the sleeve and say it seems so extreme, it is not reversible, you will have 85% of your stomach removed, that is so scary! But those are the things that appealed to me. It is just me in there, just less of my stomach, I can't decide that I want my restriction decreased, I can't decide that I want to eat "normally" again, and beleive me I know I needed the finality of this surgery. I have lost 64 lbs as this post, I feel great, I can walk again, I can be active again, I am getting rid of most of my clothes as they are now too big for me, I can keep this up, my sleeve gives me the tools I need to be succesful. There you go - my thoughts - and 100% discount from the normal 2 cent price :-D

    GERD before surgery advice

My surgery has a sleeved stomach and while I don't have GERD I have EOS (a.k.a EOE: Eosinophilic Esophagitus) which causes acid issue at night. I used to have to take two acid reducers at night, but after my surgery I only need to take 1. I was surprised by that as I actually thought it'd get worse... So while acid issues do tend to get worse for most people who have VSG (or DS or Loop DS), I think there are also a rare few who it improves upon. At least that's what I've taken from my own experience. In the end it comes down to whether you're willing to take the risk that you may have to end up having to have a revision because it makes your GERD worse.
  11. Good morning. I had my original band surgery done Nov. 5th, of 2008. In the last 6 months or so my band has slipped and now I am scheduled to go in and have it repositioned and revised. I have my notes regarding all my post op surgery food do's and don'ts but can't find my information about prepping for my surgery. Last time I did liquids for 2 days prior. If anyone has any suggestions or helpful hints about what they ate (broth, Jello, sugar free pops I remember) I would appreciate the feedback. Thank you and best of luck to all those being banded, I would do it again in a heartbeat!! Julie

    Bypass or Sleeve???

My surgeon gave me the same option either would be approved. He told me he recommended the sleeve and if years later I hadn’t lost enough with sleeve I could do revision to rny. Revision!! My plan is to have one surgery, not a potential second. Also I have pretty bad gerd after telling him that he suggested it would be best for rny, he said if I suffer it would be worse after sleeve. 5 day until surgery!!

    Doc gave me 2 options

I had a sleeve with GERD too, and my surgeon in the first appointment had LINX as an option. Having read about the trouble lapbanders have, with esophageal erosion and slippage and other nasty complications I was not enthusiastic about a foreign body being placed around my esophagus. It turned out I was not a LINX candidate due to other conditions so I revised to bypass.
  14. I had revision surgery for a slipped band in November. A month later, I started having fainting spells and spasms that originate mostly in my stomach and diaphram. I have been to hospitals and doctors, had lots of tests and no one can get to the bottom of it. My lapband surgeon says it is not related to my band. All my friends and family think I should have my lapband taken out. I don't want to lose my lapband. It is my $16, 000 investment that did help me lose 85 lbs and feel super. Now I can't exercise or do much because exertion brings on these spells. I am on three medications to control the seizures but an EEG did not show they were seizures. One doctor thinks it is some kind of problem being caused by the placement of my band in proximity to the vegas nerve and is irritating the vegas nerve. I am in limbo, waiting for the medications to stop the fainting and seizures, and wanting to get back to my sweet spot and my exercise program. I also am waiting for surgery for a mass in my sinus. Has anyone ever heard of the band or the tubing irritating the vegas nerve and causing this? I am really down because my activities have been seriously cut back and I am gaining weight. Thanks for any suggestions or information you have. Lynda

    Help anyone? Please!

I am a post op patient for 3 years with a revision done approximately 2 years ago after the band slipped. I went through a lot of what your going through. Make sure you follow your diet closely, don't drink with your meals. The first 4-6 months after surgery are the hardest and you will have all kinds of new pains. Call your doctor and ask the staff, trust me you aren't the only one with the same problems. I don't regret at all having the surgery, it gave me my life back and I lost over 100#s. Good luck!
  16. Yes i am converting to RNY on april 16th i am taking all the meds i cant sleep with so many pillows but was able to sleep for a few hours in my chase lounge last night i will def try the benedryl tonight and as far as food ive barely been eating at all ive had toast with cream cheese and thats it for the past 2 days today im going to try just liquids only ...its just so frustrating because ive never had this problem and now 2 weeks before surgery im gonna go through hell ...im also worried now when i have the surgery im gonna cough like i am and hurt my new stomach right after surgery ....how long did it take to clear up after the revision?
  17. I was a patient there. I decided to have a revision, couldn't find a doctor experienced enough in Ontario so I went to Montreal to have it done. Best thing I ever did. Am a little mad at myself for not thinking of it sooner.

    Surgery didn’t work?

Just be careful with the doctor in this video. His ideas have been repeatedly debunked by a multitude of bariatric surgeons. There’s a ton of research that goes against everything he says. I think a lot of WLS patients listen to him because they want to believe he’s right. Don’t exercise after surgery?? Awesome! It sounds great, right? But there is zero scientific research to support his claims and a ton of scientific research that debunks his claims. So, just keep that in mind. On June 12, 2017 I had my gallbladder removed, my lapband removed and revised to an RNY. HW: 402, SW 306, CW 249, GW 185

    Surgery didn’t work?

i was banded in 2007 lost 85# unfortunately this procedure was new for the dr as well as myself. there was no nutrition classes or any coordinator to help. i pretty much got letters from all different specialists to recommend the surgery and medicaid approved it. there was one visit after surgery from the hospital nutritionist. pretty much i lived off soups and any other food i would end up throwing up. this was a daily occurrence of food getting stuck. when i got to the point that i couldnt even swallow my saliva i realized i was over restricted and my stomach was bulged over the band. got it happily removed in 2010 and was supposed to have it revised to the gastric bypass. it took the surgeon over 2 hours to remove the band that normally takes 20 min. so he cancelled the bypass. kinda glad wasnt the right time in my life for that. so 2017 was my year and got the sleeve!!!!been happy since

WHo has used Dr. Marsden in Hurst, Tx

He is a really nice doctor. I am starting to wonder about him though. I went in for my revision surgery yesterday to flip my port back over and re-stitch it to my muscle. while I was under, he filled my band. He said he put in 6cc's total but when I got home I couldn't take a tblsp of the liquid hydrocodone and I couldn't keep Water down..it just came right back up. I called his office and they told me to go to either SCOR or SCOH and have Fluid removed. I was like whta the heck! I just had surgery yesterday...you think that he would have cheked to make sure I didn't have too much?? so, here I am 1 day po and have to have my hubby take me to SCOR and they said that I had a total of 7cc's. Dr. Marsden said he put in 6... 7cc's in reality plus the swelling from the surgery I was completely cut off and my salivia wouldn't even go down. You know the last thing I wanted to do after surgery is having someone press around on my stomach to try to find the port to stick a needle in it to unfill me. It makes me wonder about him....I thought he was the best but I have had too many problems back to back with him. I don't understand why an experienced dr would fill me the wrong amount and then not check to see if I could swallow before I left the hospital.

Got A Date Band To Bypass

I got my date, too! Band revised to RNY on December 10. I'm on a 2-week liquid diet now. I'm really nervous, too. All of a sudden it's REAL! Today I had to sign all the forms that discuss all the risks and possible complications--including death, of course. I told my doctor I just signed my life away. He said that they try to put every possible complication on there but that they seldom have serious complications and no one has died yet. Law, how long was your surgery and recovery? My doc says the surgery may take 3-4 hours because of the band removal and that I will be in the hospital at least two nights and probably can't return to work for 3-4 weeks. Luckily, I work on campus and the campus is pretty shut down after December 17. It will be nice to recover during the holidays. I'm 63 and am also concerned about my age. Is there anyone as old as I am who has done this revision? I haven't found anyone but I'm just now becoming active on this board (switched from LapBand talk). Good luck everyone!

How Much Have You Lost So Far?

Hi Allie Wow. what a great memory you have!. I did have many many complications after being banded.not to the fault of my surgeon.. just my body!.. and yes I had a port revision after the port ripped out of the muscle and flipped..that caused a severe infection.. so I had a hard time the first few months!..even needing a complete unfill as I was so swollen from infection that I couldn't swallow a sip of anything. ANYWAY!!.. all in the past now!.. I can't wait to get back to Spain and get some FILLS done!. Thank you for your support. I hope to lose LOADS more.. I just need to keep focused. Your weight loss is INCREDIBLE!.. 135 pounds! WOW!. I WISH WISH WISH that was me too. you must feel amazing..what is a regular day like for you?... do you count calories? or do you measure your food?.. How much exercise do you do?.. and do you stick to all of the rules?.. I actually forget the rules.. It wasn't until yesterday when I logged back in again that I remembered we aren't allowed to drink when we eat!!!.. eek.. ..I really need to get back on track!.. thank you again Allie.. well done to you!

Best wishes to you!! I hope you get your revision!!!
  24. Me neither, but just as every other medical therapy on this planet doesn't work in 100% of the cases with 100% success it's not realistic to expect 100% of WLS patients being 100% successful. I think most surgeons have a way more distant and neutral view of this treatment method than most patients. The patient's view seems to be loaded with emotions (no surprise here) and that is reflected on this board as well. It's never the treatment method that fails, it's always the patient who isn't strong enough, disciplined enough, motivated enough if goal weight isn't 100% or 100% maintained for the rest of life. This is very interesting because we used to be the same with diets. Then came the "diets don't work" movement along, backed up scientifically. And then as a last resort there is WLS - it's kind of depressing to accept that this last resort treatment isn't 100% fool proof either. It's easier to blame the fellow patients because it's quite frightening to think about the fact that you yourself might be one of the patients where it doesn't work 100%. And this sword of doom looms above your head for a very long time, if not forever. You always worry and if it's only in that little chamber in the back of your brain: "Will I be able to get down to a normal BMI?", "Will I be able to maintain my weight loss?", "Will I regain everything I lost or most of it?", "I simply can't accept even a slight gain or I'm a failure", "Will I be able to function on this high level of discipline and vigilance for the rest of my life?", "What about my 15 h per week exercise program when I suffer a serious injury and have to pause for several months?", "Am I really doomed to always follow a rigid diet for the rest of my life?" I dunno - maybe after having had surgery almost 17 years ago now and having had one revision and adhesiolysis I tend to see things differently than I had 10 or 15 years ago. I went through quite a few things during these years, including some regain when I stopped smoking, being obsessed with clean eating, exercise addiction before several sports related ailments stopped me in my tracks and being just burnt out from all the above. This is why I'm convinced that we should strive for a sustainable middle ground when it comes to eating and exercise and I can't see that much on the various WLS boards so I'm still searching for a place to settle down. Maybe it's because there aren't much people around whose surgery lies back so many years. Here you are a "veteran" after you're - what? - 18 months out IIRC. I personally think this is not a very long time out. Also being 2 or 3 years out is not much. I'm not sure how I can bring my point across without sounding like a total ass. Think about long term relationships maybe. All the couples who're together for 5,10,15,20,25 years or longer will know what I'm talking about when I say "that's not a very long time".
