How has Lap Band changed your life?
paula replied to shell4me's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Gosh, what a loaded question! Just like Donna said - I wasnt living life to the fullest when I was heavy. I go to water-parks without being freaked out that "people are looking at me". I dont even notice that stuff anymore. Or the "am I the biggst one here?" question we all wonder when we are MO. Its given me a completely different mindset of when I was MO. I now have the confidence to look people in the eyes and begin a converstaion INSTEAD of waiting for people to speak to ME first. Perfect example: About 2 weeks ago I saw a guy I graduated with... 18 years ago (wow!) Im now about 10 pounds lighter then I was back then. He and I stood and talked for the longest about where weve been for 18 years - and I never felt embarrassed or uncomfortable conversing with him. And I could tell that he was equally interested and excited in visiting with me. That was neat. If I hadnt lost 70ish pounds with my band, I wouldnt have felt comfortable enough to talk to him. I wouldve either avoided him or just made small talk and moved on. Anyway, there's a whole lot of great personality changes that happen when you lose a big amount of weight. Its actually every aspect of your life that changes... not just personality, but clothing styles change, sex life changes, the way other people interact with you. Its awesome. Honestly! -
I've heard some lose 10 lbs. It all depends on your body.

I hope to be banded in February. Because of potential fatty liver of his patients, my surgeon requires 10 days of 1000 calorie or less diet then 2 days of a liquid diet prior to the surgery. Although, really I don't think I would mind a longer liquid diet. Many of my so called "successful" weight loss attempts were long term liquid - usually water only - fasts. But then, to no one's surprise the weight all came back on. So, now I am here.

Recovering From Brachioplasty--Question With Pic
Vanilla sky replied to MississippiGirl's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Ill put the tips here since I'm on my iPad I'm having trouble messaging. #1 put anything cooking utensils you use on the counter top like a bowl, plate spoon #2 put any food u will be eating like crackers, jello and so on on the counter top make a special place just for your stuff #3 have a shelf in the fridge waist level cleared just for your stuff #4 put anything that comes in bigger containers into smaller ones like milk , tea, cokes and put that on your shelf #5 buy unscented maxi pads to cover your inscisions it's cheaper than gauze squares plus it adds padding #6 buy button up shirts #7 be prepared to have feelings of what did I do? The inscisions look bad at first and the bruising is ugly but it WILL get better #8 wear your compression garment at all times as long as your doctor says or longer #9 have an alarm clock set for when you take your pain pills and stay on them for at least a full day to stay ahead of the pain of coarse unless your doctor tells you other wise #10 relax and let others care of you for a few days it will speed up your recovery I hope this helps please feel free to ask me any questions I also had a tummy tuck, breast lift and chest wall reduction -
Frequent nausea and dry heaves?
AngelWhisper posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3.5 weeks out from being banded. Over the last week I've experienced extreme nausea and a lot of dry heaves. I saw my Dr. on Tuesday and she prescribed phenergan but otherwise wasn't too concerned. She also keeps chalking up my ailments to "nerves" which is partially true but not entirely. I just constantly feel like I'm going to vomit and I dry heave occasionally for 5-10 minutes at a time. I thought it was an antibiotic I was taking but I haven't had that for 2 days and I'm still sick. Has anyone else had this happen? Did it pass? I can't stand having to live like this! -
Is this normal?
PuppyBandit replied to Fluffy_Gurl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I was banded 10-07-10 and have that same pain, it is very slowly easing up. It is really depressing after almost 3 weeks to still have such a pain. It is not present all the time, but once I bend or stretch in a certain way, it's like a hot knife. I understand what you are talking about and am glad to see someone else who had it and it finally went away. -

Embarrassed that I'm a newbie and venting..
Malaika replied to susimar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
8 pounds is great and more than I lost on my pre-op diet. I do not KNOW how you are doing liquids for 2 weeks or even why ... I know the whole liver shrinking thing; however, I ate real food - high Proteins, low carbs and my liver was perfect so says the doc on the day of surgery -- maybe you should do liquids every other day and try high protein/low carbs on the off days? Just to keep yourself sane -- because it seems like an eternity when you're on the post-op liquid phase -- mine was 10 days clear; 10 days full and then 10 days mushies ... thank goodness I'm into mushies now -- Hang in there and YES you will lose with the surgery. Don't even let that thought enter your head. I'm 3 weeks out of surgery tomorrow and have lost 21 lbs. -- that is 1 lb. per day -- Hang in there and if it helps - VENT away! -
Welcome to the Breast Cancer 3-Day: Home As requested, here is the link to this event. It is taking place in several cities and requires a commitment to raise at least $2,200 (71% of the proceeds go directly to research). It is a pretty intense training schedule. Basically if you are walking 15-20 miles a week you can start the more intense schedule which consists of a 4 mile walk twice during the week and then back to back longer walks on the weekends. For example, I am walking 10 miles on Saturday and then 10 miles on Sunday this week. Next week will be 12 miles on Saturday and then 6 miles on Sunday. http://www.thewalkingsite.com/3dayschedule.html Here is a link to a good training schedule! I am finding it challenging to figure out what I should be eating to get through those long walks on the weekends. I am finding I am craving more carbs, but those are notoriously harder for me to eat with my band. I try to take along nuts and dried fruit as a snack on the long training days and then stick to 1200-1500 cal during the week. I have only lost 4 lbs in the last month while training, but I lost 1 inch off my hips and 3/4 inch off my waist and an incredible 2 inches off my arms (gained 1/2 inch on my thighs from all that muscle:) I started to train for this event as a way of setting an outrageous but fully attainable goal of walking 20 miles a day for 3 days!! It keeps me motivated and I am learning I want to eat better because I can get more out of my body that way. If anyone wants to join me in Arizona Nov 14-16 we can see about putting a team together!

Feeling Like Im Behind In The Game On Weight Loss
kamrie37 replied to soon2bskinnier4685's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on the 12th. I lost 10 pounds in the first week. I haven't lost anything since 6/18. It is frustrating! All we do in drink a measly amount of calories each day yet the weight lingers. Very frustrating! -
Starting weight 273 currently on liquids finding it hard to get all my protein

Thanks all for the well wishes and thoughts. It's done! I didn't chicken out! The surgery went well. They talked about the nausea so much before the surgery that I was a little scared. I HATE, HATE, HATE being nauseous. But I wasn't nauseous at all - not at all! The nurses were amazed that I did so well - they said they wished all their patients came through so well. The surgery was completed by 11am and I was released from the Surgery Center by 2:30 and back at my hotel. Today is Post-op day 2 and I am home and feeling fine. Other than some pains from the Gas - which for some reason landed in my shoulders and upper back - I am feeling quite normal. liquids are going down well and I don't feel hungry yet. So on to the journey - here's my stats: 284 - Starting Weight 274 - Pre Surgery (lost 10 lbs on pre-surgery diet) 44 - BMI From what I see on the posts, most folks are losing 7-10 pounds a month, so I'll make that my goal and see how it goes.

Band to Bypass Revision Next Week and Very Nervous!
dawnybaby replied to DMoon's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi I had my band removed in October due to severe GERD, just had the bypass on 11-10-14....they waited 6 weeks before doing my bypass for my stomach to heal. When they 1st took the band out, it felt great to eat whatever I wanted, at least temporarily, until bypass. No vomiting or reflux, now that I'm about 10 day after, it's definitely takes me back to 2011 when I 1st got my band and the stages. But I'm 15 lbs down so far and I think patients like you & I have the benefit of hindsight. We have been through the journey already so I don't think we will make the same mistakes twice! So good luck with everything !! -

Oh I would 100 percent not be doing this even if my OPM was the full $10,000. There’s no way I could afford it. And while I’ll definitely go to Mexico to get 2 missing teeth implants, I’m too worried to get a big surgery done there. I know it’s worked out really well for a lot of people, but I just couldn’t. Cheating with the Scale - a Mind Game
Treadmillwalker posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Today I stepped on the scale and it showed I lost some weight. Instead of being excited my mind instantly thought okay I can eat this fatty food for lunch. WHAT! My mind instantly wanted to cheat all because the scale was whispering, you lost some more weight. It is like wrestling with the devil. I won't reach my goals if I eat every time the scale shows I'm down--I will just yo yo. Repeating to myself--Be Strong and Ignore the Scale. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16 -
I was at 7.5 in my 10cc band then went up to 9.5 cc and very tight. I could not eat more than 10 bites and was throwing up and slime all the time. I had a 2.5 cc unfill and now cannot feel restriction. I changed doctors and gain 10 lbs this year 2014. I am not happy and not in my green zone and hungry all the time. Once you feel that spot of not being hungry and not throwing up your THERE~

I was banded 10/04/11 and between then and August '12 lost about 40lbs. In November I had redness and pain in my port area and my surgeon put me on an antibiotic and the pain and redness resolved. Then about 3 different times between November and August, I would have pain in the port area that would go away the next day after applying heat. Finally, though, in August the pain would not resolve and taking extra strength tylenol did not touch the pain. My surgeon started me on pain medication and his office went to work trying to have a port revision covered through my insurance. I paid cash for my original surgery. After a month, I was finally scheduled for an EGD and possible port revision, but when the doctor did the EGD he learned that the band had eroded into my stomach around the buckle area. This was on a Tuesday and by Thursday I had the band removed and spent 5 days in the hospital. I am not going to sugar coat it, it was awful. I've had surgeries before but this was the most difficult. In fact, it's now 5 weeks later and I'm still dealing with a lot of pain. The surgeon said that this was a very difficult surgery that would require a long recovery. He also said that if I wanted to in about 6 months I could revise to the sleeve. I am extremely down about the whole ordeal. I am so tired of being obese. I have tried every diet/program out there and have not been successful to become thin and healthy. That is why I took such drastic measures in getting the lapband, I need help outside of myself. So, I don't know what to do now. The lapband surgery was difficult, the removal was even more difficult and to consider another surgery scares me. Thanks for "listening"...I just don't know what to do. =(

Checking Myself And Recommitting To My Goals
zil commented on SlimAmbitions's blog entry in SlimAmbitions' Blog
Great Post Slimambitions!. I am there with you all the way. I was banded 8/19/2011 with a starting weight before my pre-op of 297...I went to the dr on Monday and was 245. The dr was very happy, and said I had surpassed my 6 month goal (I did not know I had one). I truly believe each and everyone of us have had issues similar to yours and we must continually re-dedicate ourselves to the task at hand. I agree with BRD, our eating issues are similar to an alcoholic, but with food. I have never had any self-control, but the band is my greatest support, because it reminds me every day of what I need to be doing, SLIM, BRD, CRYSAL AND JULIANA, WE CAN AND WILL DO THIS. we will support each other every step of the way. I am proud of all of us!!!! BEST OF LUCK -
Revisions? Anyone?
slugworth replied to WASaBubbleButt's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Revision To Mini Gastric Bypass I had my band for 2 years. 1 year of success and 1 year of adjustments, reflux, night coughing/reflux and pain. Finally I found the MGB. I am about 10 months out now and have lost about 75 pounds. I am about 100 pounds down from when I first had my band. -
Hi Capricorn! I'm having surgery on Nov. 10! I could use a buddy also. I live in NY.

I had surgery at West LA. Did you go to Options already? If you have been to Options already. Then at the Surgeon appointment. He/She will see if you have reached the 10% goal or are very close to it, if you are then they will set up a surgery date. Kaiser has approved as long as the surgeon says it a go! They usually will have the surgical coordinator call you to set up a surgical date and pre surgery appointment. On the pre surgery appointment you follow up with the surgeon once more, draw labs (if need be), see anesthesia, fill out paper work, apply for short term disability (if you plan to be off work). They are pretty good.

Uh Ohhhh A little worried
Rootman replied to Dud2Stud's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well 2 guys who worked at the site where I had mine done both said they went hog wild the EVENING before their surgery and they lived to tell about it. Nachos, buffalo wings and tequila shots, YIKES! They said they got real sick but didn't define it exactly and I was reluctant to listen to the gory details as my own post-op tummy wasn't up to hearing about it. I would be very concerned about post-op constipation too, having your gut packed with waste when anesthesia sometimes hangs up the colon might be pretty painful. Whatever you do fess up to it and take the consequences. Better safe than sorry. BTW: I was on liquid diet for 10 days, just wanted to make it as easy as possible and wanted to jump start the weight loss. -
Mine was 19 at one point, dr gave a prescription for 50,000 iu thinks that the measurement and after a month or two it came to normal levels... "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them" Einstein

List of things I am sick of because of my weight.
peacequeen replied to Ready2BDone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, I just want to cry while reading this..I can relate to almost all of it too. I have a few things to add to the list. 1. Developing rashes in places that sweat 2. I hate that it's so hard to keep my legs closed when I sit 3. I wish I could cross my legs 4. I wish I could be or feel sexy to myself and my husband 5. I wish I could wear my wedding ring, but it's too small now 6. Tough when your child says, "I wish you could play with me like you used to" 7. It would be nice to look all the way behind me when backing up in my car 8. No tolerance for heat so can't enjoy many summer activities 9. Afraid of falling because I probably couldn't get up 10. The moment when standing first thing in the morning, it's so painful since I've developed arthritis 11. My kids and husband being able to wrap their arms completely around me for a nice hug..been a long time
