Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

I'm having the revision done soon from a modified sleeve to a bypass. I'd love to hear how it's going for you Sent from my KFARWI using the BariatricPal App
  2. I had my RNY in 2002 and lost 220 pounds...2006 was a stressful year because I got married, moved 1000 miles away from family at my husband's request...I started eating sweets again which is like a drug to me...by 2009 I had only gained back about 40 so I wasn't too worried about it...then my dad got sick and almost died and that threw me into a deep depression as we'll as denial about my slow weight regain...over the next 8 years I ended up weighing 388 (not my highest) and decided to look into a revision...the surgeon I am seeing is the third opinion I've gotten...he supposed to be one of the best revisionists in the country...I am more determined to make this revision work then I was for the original surgery...back then I was in denial that I could gain it back...I'm also active in therapy where my eating is a topic. I've also done a lot of research about the DS and am aware of the high complication rate but since there is not much on success with a distal revision I was aiming toward that...so I was looking here for possible successes to help me decide to stay with this surgeon or travel far distances to hopefully find one that will do the DS on me. Oh and I'm now down to 360 bmi 59.9 because I've completed one of three consecutive months in my supervised diet...a pre-op requirement. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  3. I have a decision to make that I hope some of you can help me with...I had RNY in 2002...I'm looking to get a revision...the surgeon I have seen will only revise me to a distal RNY...I am more interested in the DS...should I trust him or look for another surgeon...this type of revision is only done by a handful of surgeons in the USA due to it's complexity Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  4. I should add that per the terms of my insurance, I paid $500 for the band to sleeve revision through Kaiser.
  5. Saw my surgeon on Monday and he feels that the decision to move forward with band revision to bypass is the best option for me . I am attending my first of 2 required support group meetings tonight and waiting to receive the list of names and numbers to set up the rest of appointments required by this specific bariatric program. I am hoping within 2- 2.5 months from now I can be ready for my new chapter. Can I please get some updates from people that have been revised and the first few months ... how did your life change ? pain , discomfort , new foods , tired , any thing to put this whole journey into a realistic perspective.

    Nina's Plastics journey

Nina: Congratulations on your weight loss. You can and are doing it. I have lost a total of 10 pounds in the last month. I am working very hard. Exercising 6 days a weeks and counting every blasted calorie. I think it is paying off! Unfortunately, the weight loss seems to be making my breasts even empytier. I ordered a kit from a female plastic surgeon on the internet that has a special bra and different size implants, so you can try them on in your own home, have your husband look and decide for yourself. I guess that sizing is an issue because the sizes don't come in bra or cup sizes but in cc's. According to this website, deciding on the size can be difficult and is the main and most common reason for revision surgery. Anyway, I haven't made up my mind, but I did talk to the PS and I don't have to decide until the 2 week pre-op visit, so I have time to think about every thing. I guess I'm inclined to go for it, even though it's an additional $1,800. My DH thinks I should leave well enough alone!
  7. I followed my liquid diet and never cheated. It was a real struggle but I wanted my liver in good shape. The day before surgery I had to have an endoscope because I was a band revision. After it was done my doctor ask if everything was ok or if I needed anything. I laughed and said yeah I need to eat. He shocked the heck outta me and said ok, you can eat today, but nothing after midnight!!!! It was a great day!

those who were banded in mexico

The peso has also gone way down, that's why the pieces have dropped in dollars. I just went to Dr. Aceves for a fill on Saturday and the cost for the flouro was only $60 instead of $75 because of the exchange rate. As for why I chose the band over the sleeve, I was not interested in cutting off a perfectly good part of my body. I realize it takes longer to lose the weight and you have to work at it, and it requires follow up but I was OK with all of those things. With the band everyone has their individual "sweet spot" yet with the sleeve it's an irreversable one size fits all. That just seems odd to me. The potential for revision from band to sleeve is there but not the other way around. I'm just a chicken, what can I say! LOL. With that being said, Dr. Aceves is the best choice for either (and yes I'm biased ) I believe he is doing more sleeves then bands now because of the demand. The day of my surgery I was the only band and there were 2 others getting sleeved.
  9. @@Lina123 I hope and pray that you get the support you need...we all need to be supported by those who are closest to us...it makes a huge difference. Thank you for replying to the topic. I'm sorry to hear about your issue w/GERD. My surgeon discussed the possible complications and concerns with me going with the sleeve, especially after reviewing the results of my Upper GI, and I finally made my decision to go with the RNY-Gastric Bypass. I have dealt with GERD for way too long and I'm ready to be rid of the nagging feelings associated with it. However, I'm also nervous about too much weight loss after having the RNY procedure, but also ask myself what is too much? Lol. I'm scheduled for surgery on Feb. 8th and I'm hoping that the loss will taper off at a "normal weight" and I am finally able to have a normal and healthy body composition. I look forward to discussing the weight-loss and maintenance plans with the Dietitian in a few weeks. As far as revisions, this has been a hot topic on this site and I'm sure if you search under the Gastric Bypass sections, you will find some answers. I wish you the best.
  10. I found my doctor because he was the only one who would take me on and revise my band with all it's complications. I knew of the complications because of several scans run in the Emergency Room from the pain I had. Every other doctor I called said no. I asked him personally and he and his staff were upfront with his stats. I have not had any complications post op. If you are in the Houston area, I can give you his name. Good luck!
  11. I originally had the sleeve and regained about 35 pounds and had a lot of acid reflux, before and after the sleeve. I just had revision to mini bypass on March 31. If I had the chance to do it over again I would definitely choose the bypass the first time and not mess with the sleeve. The sleeve works great for some people but for me it just didn't work or last like I had hoped it would. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

    Insurance Requirments

I am a TDB. I have already qualified based on my BMI and comorbidities I have. My ins. co. requires a 6 month med sup diet. When you have other complications it is possible to submit your claim early for review. Then it is up to the review board at the ins. co to make a determination of do they approve you now or make you go through the 6 month diet. My bp on my doctor's visit was 180/102 which really scared me. I also have United Health Care. What the requirements for insurance coverage are up to the type of coverage that your employer contracted for with the ins. co. I am hoping to have my surgery earlier, but if I don't I am hoping to have it before year end. I meet with m surgeon on 8/19 for my second visit to review some medical tests he has ordered. After that date I will have a much better idea of how he will proceed. My coordinator with Optum or Optima told me after the ins. co. receives the claim they have 15 days to make a decision. She said it normally does not take that long. With UHC for my employer if your BMI is at 40 or greater you do not need any comorbidity. I have already met all the other criteria for my ins. co. with the exception of the 6 month diet. The only other requirement they have is a psych eval and sign off from PCP. My doctor's office has add'l tests but those are dependent on the patient. For me since I am a revision patient from lap band to sleeve, he has already done an EGD. About two weeks before surgery he will order a chest x-ray, EKG and labs.

    Mirena removal

So I had my mirena put in 6 months pre op and put on a significant amount of weight. I'm 4 months post op and just don't feel like I'm where I need to be and feel like my mirena might be contributing to the issue. On top of weight gain I have dealt with crazy moody swings, terrible acne breakouts, and bad cramping. Has anybody else had this issue? I have an appointment to have it removed Monday. Really hoping removing it will help. I had the band to bypass revision in December and felt so much better about having one piece of foreign crap removed from my body, hoping this will be the same way

    Flipped Port

Had my port revison done on August 16th. They put me under twilight sedation and the procedure went very smootly. The used the same incision and I said my port was tilted on it's side and was not completely flipped over. I am happy though because I have a mini port that was designed to to stick out too much and with it turned at an angle it kind of defeated the purpose. Now it lays flat, other than the swelling. I had an ugly scar too from the original surgery that kind of stuck out and it looks like that is fixed too. I had changed doctors and used Dr. Benavides for my port revision. So far I believe I am happy with the results. He also gave me a small fill of .2cc's.
  15. Hi Jennifer, I just wanted to offer an example of a friend of mine who had RNY. She had it about 3yrs ago. I hadn't seen her in a while and met up with her this past Feb. She had lost close to 150lbs. I was excited for her but I was quickly corrected. She was very disappointed with her experience. She told me about her dumping syndrome and how she feels she was much happier being overweight than she is now. I have been looking into RNY and LapBand for quite a while now-I have about 200 to lose. The nurse practitioner told me that if I want to work for the weightloss, the band was an excellent choice for me but if I wanted quick weightloss go with RNY. So I started researching. I have found this...LapBand has PBing, sliming and slippage(these are the complaints I have seen most often). There is also the possibility of erosion. With RNY you get..malabsorption, lifetime of taking vitamins, iron and other nutritional supplements, dumping syndrome (chills, cold sweat, nausea, vomiting etc), weight regain (because once you stretch your pouch-the stomach is elastic-there isn't much you can do to get it to where it was. True, there is RNY Revision but that should only be done as a major necessity. If you really want to see some of the effects of RNY just go to youtube.com and put gastric bypass in the search box. There are alot of RNY pts that have documented their process. Sure most of them say they would "do it again an a heartbeat" but to hear some of the stuff they are going through..my thought is "Why?" One lady I read about even bragged about her RNY but then blogged about all the times she has gone to the ER and how sick she has been and how she is actually down to 97lbs (no lie) because she can't keep anything down! Mind you I have also read that some folks with the Lapband have it removed because of slippage or it was too tight. One person even complained of too much restriction because they couldn't go out to dinner and eat like they used to..what's that about? I know this is long winded but these are things other's have said. I am still going through the getting approved phase so all I have to offer is my opinions and things other folks have said. Keep us posted C

    Revision Jan 6

Had revision surgery on 12/27, I have the physical support but the emotion support of my husband comes and goes. He was not a big fan of me having the surgery but respected my decision enough to be present in my recovery which has been far worse than my initial surgery recovery. I agree tons of support on the boards here. It really helped me through the nerves leading up to surgery. As well as giving me some realistic expectations on after care.
  17. I felt like you and did everything in my power to NOT have a bypass, but in the end the GERD was just too awful to go on with. I was at goal and didn't want to lose more weight. I lost 10 lbs the first postop week on liquids but haven't lost any more. Look in the Revision forum for lots of people's stories about sleeve to RNY revisions for GERD.

    Former Fatties! July Goals

I'm shocked how many people here think I'm rude, mean, insulting, etc. for being an advocate for a lifestyle change and the truth. "I'm not doing your challenge" well, that's why doctors do revisions on people. If you don't like what I have to say, then unsubscribe. Fact is, if you're having bariatric surgery or had, it's because you're consuming (or consumed) more calories than you burn.
  21. Hello mariecar, I am going for a revision to gastric bypass on September 4. I am in Windsor, Ontario I wish you the best, send me a message if you like before surgery. I don't know when I am starting my diet phase am just waiting on the information from the surgeon and nutritionist. Donna
  22. Hi, I'd love to see what we have in common surgery-wise as well as apart from surgery. (I'm being sleeved in March 2015, a revision surgery from the band that was placed in March 2011.) When I'm sufficiently recovered, I would welcome the opportunity to meet up in the borough. Let's go for a walk, a light-bite, or a cup of coffee and discuss our surgeries and more!
  23. Yes, I also have Medicare (Oregon) and my insurance coordinator was going to process the paperwork afterwards and send it to them. I'm 2 1/2 weeks out now. I had to sign a form with the understanding that I had to pay the fees involved if for some reason medicare won't pay for it. She also said that she's never seen Medicare not cover a slipped band to sleeve revision, they always cover it. Guess I'm lucky! Good luck!

    First Round Of Requirements Satisfied!

You're revising from the sleeve? The DS was my first choice but I'll probably sprout fairy wings and fly before being able to get it covered, so sleeve it is! Please keep us up to date on your progress - I wish you luck!

    Sleeved March 8

Glad there are other March 8 people out there! I can honestly say that Dr. Aceves and his staff are amazing! I'm not back to work yet --- recovering while in vacation in Florida with my parents, husband and daughter and then return to Canada next week. I won't return to work until April 1 but I took extra time off only because for any sick occurrence I have to bring in a doctor note so I'm using up some sick time I have banked I'm on a strict clear liquid diet only right now --- that's his post op instructions. I'd love some cream Soup . Each doctor seems to be different --- looks like I won't be eating for 4 weeks!! But in 10 more days (15 days for revision surgery) I can add in some other stuff. Still a little sore but looking forward to recovering on the beach in a few days when it warms up here! Does anyone else have an issue with trying to get in all of the required liquids? I sure am! I'm happy with my decision and so looking forward to all the new clothes that I just bought and to wear this summer!! Alana
