  1. I am having a RnY for multiple reasons, some of which- quicker weight loss, GERD, asthma which can be caused/aggravated by GERD, sleep apnea which also could be aggravated by GERD, my age(72) the fact that it is a proven gold standard treatment, and call me sentimental but I loathe the idea of them removing. 75% of my stomach and either giving it to some pathologist or throwing it in the trash. Granted it worked too well at extracting every calorie from foods but I was kind of fond of the old muscular bag, I don't want him yanked out a keyhole incision in my abdomen and cavelierly pitched away. I came into this world with him, I'd like to leave with him still there. So far all I've donated to pathology is 1 appendix, 2 tonsils, 1 thumb joint and some biopsy slides, not ready to up the count right now! But it is YOUR BODY, you and your surgeon will make the decision for YOU not me. You are the one who will live with your body and your decisions. Decide and decide well, for there are seldom do-overs in Bariatric Surgeries. And no matter what your decision we will help you, love you, encourage you and cheer every triumph you make in your life.[emoji13] Your friend and co traveler on this weight loss road ** frust8 Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. Relying on what was on video from Australia, they can also go down with a smaller gauge bougie like a 35-38 French and chinch it up smaller, Did not mention plication, I think what the questioner was alluding to is done. endoscopically, with interior stitching, the Australian surgeon does his the traditional way with stapling, maybe overstitching the seam afterwards etc so basically the same as the original laprascopic surgery. Said recovery might be slower, weight loss slower but that it works and works well. He was from Mercy Bariatrics in Perth. [emoji14] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Yeah keep things floating and free, kidney stone is rated the worst pain, trumps childbirth and even heart attack, mind you I don't want to experience all 3 to judge for myself. I would rank acute pancreatitis ahead of childbirth and I had 3 unmedicated natural ones, that pain is so bad you almost long for death as a release. So anything Bariatric surgery can do to me short of doing it with only a shot of novacaine, a box cutter and some fishing line, I can and will handle it. Look me up in the next couple months and I bet I'll still be singing the same song[emoji444][emoji14] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric emptying study

I had never heard of that kind of thing until I watched the video from Mercy Bariatrics in Perth Australia. Apparently, they. do something similar with barium and marshmallows, they also have a test called the rice cream swallow, all different paths with but one goal, to see what's going on with your gastrointestinal system. Is what you're exhibiting called gastroparesis? There was someone else on here talking about that, might have something to do with slow stomach emptying? Oh you learn about so many interesting things on Bariatric Pal, I am glad I joined this happy group.![emoji14][emoji14][emoji14] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Hair loss :(

If your hair dresser told you to do that one I’d probably go with that one. My mom ended up losing her hair and she’s a Bariatric patient as well and she gets head injections every two weeks and does nioxin and her hair is coming in nicely. My hair loss just started so we’re just to get a jump start on it

I have been on lisinopril myself, not a bad med at all. Don't stress, that won't do you any good. Relax, it sounds as though you have a,pretty good cardiologist who's right on top of things. Only cardiac anomaly my cardio and I are watching now is I have a slightly dialated aortic root but since it's still within normal range she cleared me for my bariatric surgery. My cardiologist is absolutely wonderful, I would recommend her to anyone. I was fearful as there are heart issues running in my family, I've been through ultrasounds, stress tests and even heart caths and so far (at 72) I am doing very well. I am praying your issues straighten out, I believe they will . Let's get you straightened up,so you can join me this spring or summer in surgery! You are going to get better, now smile and relax because things are getting set right.[emoji14][emoji14]I am always here for you, Okay? Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

Are we allowed to share how psych evaluation go?

Tropical,, I had a very similar experience with my psych. This psych's entire practice is for bariatrics, but that didn't stop her from telling me that she wasn't sure that having half my stomach cut out and risking intractable GERD was worth it. She criticized my every lifestyle habit, cast doubt in my ability to succeed, and by the end had me feeling like my 27 year marriage was completely dysfunctional. I left the office completely dejected and after having issues with my surgeon's office staff for failing to refer me to a dietician, I took it as a sign that it just wasn't meant to be for me. I absolutely wrote my surgeon to tell her about this horrific experience, but received no response. A few months later, when I hit my bottom (you know....rock bottom), I decided that I was finished with this red tape and was planning on going self-pay in Mexico. It was then that I ran into my current patient coordinator who has really done a marvelous job and my surgery is scheduled for 4/10. I guess I tell you this is because there are good and bad practitioners in all specialties. Unfortunately, we got a couple of doozies. I strongly urge you to let your surgeon know so that they can reconsider using that psych again.

I had out of pocket VSG surgery on 2/8/15 at Emory Bariatric In Atlanta, GA. I stayed in the hospital for 3 days at a total cost of about $25,000.00. The care I received was excellent and well worth the cost.

My PCP just adds the extra tests then faxes them to my Bariatric Dr. I guess I better look back in my game plan. I have my Blood work per my PCP. To keep an eye on my Blood Sugars She has to have it done every 6 month which is a REAL Pain in my B***. I'm off to get my notebook checking it out. Have a great day
  15. If she has one then I could be a surgery twin, the way things are moving that might be my month also. If not I'll be following both your stories, good wishes for next Monday, you share your day with many other Bariatric Pals.[emoji14] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. 7 months of education classes, weigh-ins, blood tests, pulmonary and heart tests, psychological screening, and various other appointments have finally brought me to the actual surgery this upcoming Monday. I had my pre-admission testing and meetings with the doctor today, blood test too which came back ok. I'm on the liquid diet currently and ready to go. I was thinking the other day. Some of the winter clothes I've worn all season will never be worn again, most of my clothes won't (except for some I kept when I had lost a lot of weight on my own 2 years ago). I've never been skinny. I've been smaller but never have reached my goal. I'm really excited to start this change and continue to work for the rest of my life for it. I want to buy clothes anywhere, have a child (if this helps it), go on a rollercoaster, jog or run, all of the things I've never been able to do in the past 33 years. My wife was supposed to have her surgery last week originally but the insurance required additional tests that couldn't be scheduled until April, so it's disappointing we can't do it together but I'm still happy we are taking this journey. I've ben reading over these boards since last summer and am part of the Facebook group as well as many other Bariatric related ones and I really feel like I have a hold on this. I'll be at the hospital 5 AM Monday. It's finally time.

Are we allowed to share how psych evaluation go?

Good Lord! Demand a referral to another one immediately!!! That's absolutely terrible. Mine works with my surgeon and her bariatric patients routinely so knows the drill. While I was there, they had 3 other of her patients in the waiting room doing the same thing I was doing! I'm so sorry you had that experience, but don't put up with that BS! Fire her!
  18. Interesting Article about WLS and Relationships http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-bariatric-surgery-relationship-status-20180327-story.html "A large Swedish study has found that obese people who had a spouse or live-in partner and then underwent weight loss surgery were 28% more likely to become separated or divorced compared with those in a comparison group who didn't have surgery." "The authors of the new study acknowledged that while weight loss surgery "may affect the dynamics of the relationship," assigning blame for breakups would be a more difficult task. Their research did not capture which partner ended the relationship, or why." "Divorces and separations were higher among patients who judged the quality of their family relationships to be poorer at the time of surgery. And they were more common among patients who were younger, had been divorced before, or who had been married or living with a partner for shorter period." "But not all ended relationships should be seen as evidence of an "adverse event" of bariatric surgery, the authors cautioned. The increased self-confidence and self-esteem that comes with taking the decision to have surgery, and with the substantial weight loss that results, may have empowered some patients "to leave an unhealthy relationship," they wrote.? "Patients who were single before surgery, however, were roughly twice as likely to begin a new relationship afterward as were obese patients who just got weight-loss advice" "After four years, 21% of the single men and women who got surgery had entered into marriage or a new romantic relationship. For the obese members of the comparison group who got diet-and-exercise advice only, 11% had done so after four years. At 10 years out, 35% in the surgery group had married or kindled a new romance, compared to 19% of those in the comparison group"

    Where to go?

I'm not Canadian, but had surgery in Mexico several years ago. There were no problems and I was perfectly safe the entire time I was there. The Drs that partner with Bariatric Pal are all very reputable and do a great job. You can expect to pay around 4K plus your flight. I am very happy with my results. I say go for it.
  21. I am in BC Canada and there is no self pay option here for gastric sleeve. I had a gastric band, but it was removed in September 2017 due to a port infection. My doctor sent a referral to the bariatric program here, but it can be a two year wait for a consultation even... so I am exploring my options. Where can I go??? The thought of surgery in Mexico is terrifying, but so many people do it. Are there any other Canadians out there who had surgery elsewhere? Where did you go? How much did it cost? Are you happy? TY in advance

Are we allowed to share how psych evaluation go?

Tropical....yours is a particularly good cautionary tale about the perils of working with a psychologist who has little training regarding bariatric surgery. When getting an appointment with a therapist, I think an important first question for your surgeon and for the psychologist is "Have you had patients approved for surgery by this person in the past? Have you approved people for bariatric surgery in the past?" If the answer is no...move on. Don't take the appointment. Pick someone who actually approves people. I'm grateful my group has a dedicated therapist who not only does our evaluations, but also runs our support group and does therapy for people experiencing difficulty during their journey. Having a therapist with a working knowledge of the process, and of the typical problems encountered by people along the way...is so valuable.
  23. And I had the opposite happen to me. My psych, which i found out later was not from the hospital where my former bariatric program was based but an independent person contracted in,I'm not certain if she had done bariatric evaluations before, told me in December 2017 I had passed with flying colors, shook my hand and wished me well on my future surgery. Then she had the audacity to send a report to the bariatric program that I wasn't emotionally stable for surgery, and if I can believe the person calling me with the rejection I lacked the comprehension to fully understand the surgery. Bovine excretement! The only emotional problem I have now is triune. Sorrow that I wasted my valuable time humbling myself to jump through their "hoops". Disbelief that such a thing be inflicted upon a decent & nice person. And finally anger that the statement of a mental or emotional impairment be entered. I have Mensa level intelligence, I am fully cognizant of the risks of surgery, am aware what the future commitment to a lifestyle change entails, realize at my age[emoji70] I may heal slower, have a higher degree of pain but still believe surgery [emoji40]will be superior to Living in an aging deteriorating obese shell which will lead to my eventual death. My adult son was present at my psych evaluation, heard every word spoken and would testify to all happenings, if he needed to. Yet I was,"kicked to the curb" by people I had a relationship with since August 2015. At this point I sorrow for the trust they betrayed, the abject waste of 2 1/2 years of my life and the attempt to destroy my confidence in myself and my worthiness for what I fought so hard to achieve. Every trip was 100 miles round trip, that should be an example of me being committed to a future change. But I picked myself up, dusted myself off, and I'm still persuing my surgery, because I believe in my chance for future health. I want to be thinner, fitter and most importantly alive and really living the remainder of my life. I believe still in me and what I can still accomplish. So I pray this alternate program [emoji541]will work with me to assure a true future and life triumphant![emoji13][emoji106][emoji13] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Your psych was massively inappropriate and you absolutely should write a letter. Don't spare any detail. Go ahead and attach some references like this: https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/12/7/16587316/bariatric-surgery-weight-loss-lap-band. Your psych is not giving a medical opinion, she's giving a layperson's opinion, and that's ridiculous. "Save you from being chopped up"... good lord. And I have no bloody idea what you're meant to do in a week of Weight Watchers other than learn how to fill in your booklet, and if she's trying to get you to learn about nutrition? That's what the mandated nutritionist visits are for. Don't go back to this woman. Find another person to conduct the psych eval. You don't like her, she's cold, she's wrong, and she's apparently trying to make you a regular client by steering you towards a weight-loss program with the stated intention of you NEVER getting the surgery. That is not the intent of the eval, it's supposed to be a single visit to gauge whether you're in a good mental space to have the surgery, NOT to try to brainwash you into doing what the clinician wants.

Are we allowed to share how psych evaluation go?

Weird. And it doesn't seem as if this psych works with the bariatric department very closely because that would not happen at my clinic ever. Did you take any questionnaires or discuss support at home regarding the surgery? Was surgery even actually discussed at all? Did she evaluate you for eating disorders? After you get your approvals and your surgery date, I would write a long letter to the head of her department and copy your surgeon and recommend they find not use this person for bariatric psych evals.
