Does it ever get better?
SHIFTYOLDLADY replied to crazyplantlady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It gets amazingly better. I had my surgery over 5 years ago, reached my goal and have maintained. I discovered, that one day I could eat something and the next day I couldn't. I enjoy pretty much all foods, just keep my portions very small. I eat around every 3 hours, a yogurt, etc. for Snacks. I use small containers so my portion control is easy. I go out to eat occasionally. Always ask for a to-go container when food is delivered, that way you won't try to over eat. When I get home, I immediately portion the left overs out and have meals for a week. It takes time to figure out what you can eat. Mostly chew your food well, small portions and no liquids while eating. The first few months after surgery I didn't see much of a loss but then I had lost 130 in a year. -
So I've been doing well, surgery on 12/28, down 40 pounds and feeling fantastic. Except after I eat dinner. These past two weeks, I've been throwing up 4 of 5 dinners because I get serious pain. I'm perfectly fine during the day; I have my Protein shakes, yogurts, Protein drinks, cottage cheese, bariatric "Chips" etc. without issues. I already know chicken and I are no longer friends, but fish and I are. I put less on my plate than my 4 year olds, never go back for seconds. I think I chew enough and I don't drink with my meals or ahead of them. I am just wondering if anyone else has developed issues like this and how you've gotten around it. I'm starting to worry and my husband thinks I'm becoming bulimic. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Four months post gastric sleeve and two months post gallbladder surgery. Starting weight 234 and I am now 184. Everything was going great, for the first two months. Adapted well to surgery, losing weight, getting in shape, feeling great. Then all of a sudden everything has come to a complete stop. I have lost 2 lbs, in TWO months. I expected stalls but cannot believe it is lasting this long with all that I am doing. Still no, bread, pasta, rice, soft drinks, or caffeine. Breakfast options - egg, Greek yogurt, protein drink, or berries and cheese. Lunch options - lean meats (usually super leftovers) or deli meats & cheese Supper options - Usually lean meat and green vegetable. my quick meals are tuna, imitation crab legs, shrimp, chicken fingers. Snacks options are - Cheese/nuts, protein drinks, Italian ice, nuts and/or seeds. I consume 60 - 90 grams of protein per day, and 60+ oz of water per day. I do not keep up with calories, but it is under 1000 per day. I do not journal, but I am very conscious of what I eat. I exercise 4-5 times per week. Each day I do 30 minutes to one hour of cardio and alternate upper body, lower body and abs with machine weights. I truly workout, I am drenched when I leave. I am so grateful for what I have lost, but was hoping for more. So any advise on what I am doing wrong or what I need to do?

9/2/15 - Can't Eat Enough
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Scout1702's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To me it is as easy to eat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt as to drink a Protein shake. I agree. What are you eating? Do you plan your meals and Snacks? Are you tracking your food? What is your protein target? By the way, congratulations on the weight loss. You look great! -

Congratulations! I understand that not tracking seems to be working well for you, but how do you know whether or not you are getting enough Protein? Just curious. My surgeon suggests only 40-50 g of protein a day so it's really easy to get into that ballpark without obsessing over grams. A cup of yogurt, a handful of nuts, Collegen powder in a green smoothie or a cup of coffee and some cheese usually does the job. 40-50 grams of protein seems really low. Is that the protein target ongoing or was that just the target in the few days after surgery when it was harder to get in protein? This is first time I think I have ever seen a protein target under 60 grams, and most are closer to 80-100 grams. Mine is 100. -

Make sure you are nor drinking 30min, before and after you have your shakes...I was told if we drink after, especially you will push the Protein drinks through faster and we won't absorb it. Thats what happens to me,I felt hunger pang and realized I was drink right after eating by 10 min.Now I am by the book doing much better..I look forward to to Jello and pops to curb I. Between and broth oh YUMMYY LOL:( On Wed, I go to one soft meal at dinner !!! Yeah sometimes I forget I need more Water intake I need to add crystal light to the water so much water has me a bit tired of it. Are you allowed to eat puree foods yet or yogurt? What shakes do you buy for protein ? Well tomorrow I have to see my nutritionist I'm hoping I can eat something else other then protein shakes and soups I actually tried twice the Greek yogurt but omg i felt it was so heavy for me does that happen to you ?and I tried lentil soup being that it's so good for Iron and that was ok Have you eaten anything outside of what your supposed to eat ?

I find that i'm much more comfy with soft moist foods like refried beans, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese than i am the few pieces of chicken or beef i've tried. Blended chicken chili was good but chewed to death chicken or beef just seems to get drier and drier. -

Hi Everyone! So after surgery I became extremely lactose intolerant ???? I can no longer drink Premier Protein or use gene pro whey Protein. I can't eat cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese of any kind...so basically getting in protein is getting very difficult because I'm not much of a meat eater. Do you guys have any suggestions? This morning I had one scrambled egg white filled me up but that's only 6 grans of protein. On average, I get maybe 30-40 g of protein a day. -

Hey @It's Time - a day in my pouch is basically like this.... Breakfast - a Protein Shake in the morning using lactose free skim milk, scoop of GNC Pro Performance whey Protein (currently Cookie N Cream) sometimes a splash of sugar free flavor syrup and other times 2T of PB2 so my protein shake is usually 32-37g of protein. (Takes me about an hour to finish it though) Lunch - flavored tuna pouch mixed with a little plain Greek yogurt or a portion of Shelly's Ricotta Bake Mexican Style so lunch is 14-16g protein Dinner - this one really varies as I try to have something very similar to what I fix for my family mine just gets dumped into my NutraBullet first and I skip the carb heavy stuff like mashed potatoes so dinner is around 16-26g protein. Example last night I made Shepard's pie from Friday's leftover crockpot roast with potatoes & carrots. I shredded the roast, drained the carrots and potatoes then skinned the potatoes tossed both in the food processor with Greek yogurt & seasoning to make the "mash" for the top. I added the roast to the juices I drained from the veggies, added a splash of Worcestershire, 1c shelled edamame (they don't like peas) and some salt & pepper. I filled individual ramekins with the meat filling (tossed mine in the NutraBullet with a little beef broth first) then topped theirs with the mash, mine with some fresh parmesan! In the oven and BLAMO awesome dinner for everyone and no one even realized it was reinvented leftovers. My portion had 26g protein! Snack - this one is my favorite. PROTEIN ICE CREAM!!!! I have 1/2c-1c of this awesome yumminess depending on what my protein was for he rest of the day. I try to get 90ish grams a day. 1/2c of my protein ice cream is right at 20-21g of protein per serving and it goes down really easy. I even invested in a new ice cream maker just for this daily dish of awesome - I got it free using my credit card points (from being self pay) on amazon.com heehee Last but not least I usually have 1 piece of Russell Stover plain dark chocolate - it even has 1g protein so I savor it! Today is my birthday so I'm going to try playing around with making a 5 minute microwave high protein cake and see how that turns out and how many grams of protein I can squeeze into it! So everyone - please tell me how its going! Are there any food type things I can help you with or experiment with to help you get to a better you? Let me know!!! Ummmm WOW! Can I move in? I am not even close to being that creative! How do you make the ice cream? -

I had surgery VSG on 2/17. My surgeon gave me a "Phase 2" diet that includes mushy foods like apple sauce, yogurt, soft meats, and cottage cheese. I am supposed to introduce one or two of those per day so that I can learn what is comfortable and what isn't. He also stressed that I eat slowly so that I learn to recognize when I feel satisfied and then stop eating. Does your surgeon's office not have a nutritionist to guide you moving forward? 12+ months post-op Diet restrictions
Kindle replied to PTGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 26 months out and have been below goal for 18 of them. Of course the further out I got my portions increased. I could only eat a couple tablespoons at a time at 2-3 months and reached my max capacity of about a cup by 14 months. I can eat more in the evenings than in the morning and I can eat more of things like Soup and yogurt than I can chicken or steak. When I was close to goal I upped my fat and carbs by adding in more fruit, whole grains and full fat dairy, nuts, etc. in order to slow down and stop my loss. I can't give you numbers as far as grams of fat, Protein, carbs and calories because I don't track or measure. But I shoot for protein first, minimize (not exclude) carbs like Pasta, rice, bread and sweets and pay no attention to fat content. Besides my high protein diet I drink a protein shake and eat a Quest bar everyday so I know I'm getting well over 60-80g protein/day. I drink 64-100oz every day. I eat fruit, veggies and grains every day. I take my Vitamins every day. I don't ever feel like I'm dieting because there's nothing I can't or don't eat, just in moderation. I saw the nut on my day of surgery and haven't talk to her since. I just figured out what worked for me based on the basics of meeting protein and Fluid goals and making healthy food choices. -

That is quite good to know (the pushing of a yogurt rich diet). Depending upon the brand and such, they can have an extremely varied microbe content. I suppose an interesting test would be to break down post surgical success based upon which yogurt brands (and in turn, which microbes) lead to the most desirable outcome. That experiment would be much further down the line however LOL. Speaking with my mother, she remembers being pushed into an extremely high protein diet post bypass, and told to avoid fruits and vegetables. I had forgotten that fact. Thanks for the insight, Brad We are all encouraged to eat a high protein/low carb diet. Yogurt is a great option immediately post op because of it's soft consistency. Some of us are even allowed it in the "liquid" phases. It remains a good option later on as well, due to its high protein content and low carbs/sugar. Another thing that might be interesting to explore is the prebiotic Fiber content of many high Protein Bars. Many use isomalto-oligosaccharides and a major brand, Quest, just switched to soluble corn fiber. I was an avid Quest Bar eater until the switch and my gut bacteria definitely didn't take the switch well. I became HORRIBLY bloated and flatulent. I couldn't even be in the same room with myself it was so bad. I had to switch to another brand that was still using isomalto-oligosaccharides. -

I had my surgery with Dr. Ariel Ortiz in Mexico over two years ago. Even then His dietician STRONGLY recommended the use of probiotics. She wanted us on drinkable yogurts with live cultures starting 3 days postop. They also offer and encourage their patients to use their line of bariatric Vitamins that include a probiotic supplement. I did not use their line, but I do take whole food based vitamins that include prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes. I also eat Greek yogurt with live cultures every day. I lost over 100% of my excess weight and have kept it off for two years. I have no idea how much of an impact the probiotics played because it's something I've taken from the very beginning. -

Good evening, I notice a recurring theme of folks eating a bunch of yogurt. This is something we would have to include in any research we may undertake. If this is something we end up delving into, my first step would be to contact nutritionists and pick their brain. Fortunately we are close to Colorado and the plethora of specialists which could help us. All of the folks involved in my mother's surgery have since retired, so I have fallen out of the "local" bypass scene. Though these ideas are in their infancy, hopefully in 10 years time they can really help folks undertaking this path. Thanks, Brad -

Ughhh ate too much today I just know it...
Djmohr replied to MxKitty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess you need to ask yourself are you hungry? Really? Or are you simply falling into old behaviors. Trust me, I have to do this every single day many times a day. Your carbs are quite high given you just had surgery and are in the weight loss phase. As far as eating dinner, you should not skip meals but maybe starting tomorrow focus on reducing Snacks or choosing a snack that will stick with you longer. sugar free chocolate is not a good option. It won't kill you but there are choices that will keep you fuller longer. I had to stop eating yogurt because for me it is a slider food and I am hungry again pretty quickly. I will usually snack on cottage cheese or chicken salad or lunch meat and cheese. Those tend to stay with me longer. Also I noticed that Protein bars that have Peanut Butter in them stay with me for a very long time. -

Ughhh okay so today has not been my best day... I don't know WTF is wrong with me I know I'm not actually hungry... Quick backstory - Open RNY 03/2002 - revision via Endoscopic Soft Tissue Re-approximation to cinch stoma/pouch 02/09/16. I have been doing spot on fantastic the last 3 weeks and its like I lost my mind today. I'm on a soft modified diet meaning I should be introducing more solid foods as my pouch can manage it but I'm pretty scared to so I'm still eating mainly soft foods... Breakfast - 10oz chocolate Caramel Protein shake (33g protein) with FF lactose free milk Snack - 1 Hershey dark chocolate sugar free miniature Bottle of Water 16.9oz lunch - Ricotta Bake Mexican style (19g protein) Bottle of water 16.9oz Snack - Oikos triple zero banana cream Greek yogurt (15g protein) ANOTHER snack and I don't know why but I inhaled a Pure Protein Bar (20g protein) I have dinner prepped its a 1/3c portion of blended "Shepard's pie" kind of - just the beef, gravy & edamame (whirled in the blender a little) that I'll cover with cheese instead of mashed potatoes (26g protein). If I eat the dinner I'm sitting @ 1,063 calories 113g protein, 75 carbs 37 fat & 27 sugar. You'd think with all this protein I'd be stuffed - maybe I shouldn't have dinner and just drink a ton of water? Any advice?
