    Scared to eat different foods

Well, I'm a year and a half out, so I have no limits on what i can eat anymore. Early on, my go-to snacks were Dannon Light & Fit Greek yogurt, string cheese, turkey sticks (like beef sticks, but with turkey), and Protein bars. Once I was allowed nuts, I would often do an ounce of peanuts for a snack as well.

    Scared to eat different foods

I guess I should better explain what I mean about my post. I know what I can eat, I'm looking more for different food/snack ideas. I haven't had Greek yogurt because I find it too high in sugar and carbs (except for plain). I don't want to eat bread or anything like that. Because I haven't had any sugar/carbs I'm scared that introducing these foods will hinder my weight loss. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Scared to eat different foods

I wasn't allowed nuts or berries with seeds until 3 months post-op, so you should definitely check with your nutritionist. As for carbs, I was allowed "soft whole grains" somewhere around 6 weeks post-op, iirc. However, I found anything "bready" WAY too filling still at that point. I remember trying to make myself an open face egg sandwich with a teeny tiny piece of this toasted: http://www.pepperidgefarm.com/ProductDetail.aspx?catID=754&prdID=121328 I got a little over halfway through it and thought I was going to die. But that was way more than 7 weeks out. Closer to 3 months probably? I can do a whole piece of toast now, but I'm 18 months out. Big difference! You should definitely be doing Greek yogurt now. Surprised your NUT didn't have you on that already in the full liquids phase... Great source of Protein and easy on the stomach.
  4. Cottage cheese, unsweet apple sauce, strained cream soups, ricotta bake, and yogurt should all be ok for the puree stage.

    Scared to eat different foods

First, I don't know your program and you should probably check with your NUT to see what they want you eating at this stage. Everyone's program and stages are somewhat different. That said .... At 8 weeks I was eating soft foods such as Greek yogurt (my favorite was the Dannon Triple Zero banana and coconut), sf Jello & pudding, cream of wheat, scrambled eggs, chicken salad (mixed with plain greek yogurt instead of mayo), egg salad, and Laughing Cow cheese wedges. I still had one Protein shake per day just to make sure I was getting my full amount in, but I started to get most of it from foods at this point. I stayed away from nuts, Protein Bars, and fruits until pretty close to 4 or 5 months. Even now I limit how much of those things I eat anyway.

What do you eat before and after a work out?

I eat Greek yogurt about half an hour to and hour before working out. I get cramps if I do anything heavier. I get light headed if I don't eat at least a small about of carbs beforehand. All the research I've done suggests eating something before working out, usually some kind of carbohydrate like a banana, and some protein.
  7. I did have mashed potatoes--nice and pureed. And I am not a big fan but that was suggested and worked nicely. That and yogurt, sugar free apple sauce, ricotta cheese bake, and if you whip some cottage cheese so it doesn't have any lumps, that works, too. And tomato soup.
  8. I am 7 weeks postop and have only been eating Protein and a tiny bit of veggies. I want to start expanding the foods I can eat, but I'm scared. I don't want to eat carbs like bread, rice, or Pasta, but I'm thinking of stuff like nuts, plain Greek yogurt, berries, things like that. What bothers me is, will my weight loss slow down because I'm introducing some carbs and sugar? Should I just stick to protein only with a little veggies? I would really appreciate some suggestions of what to eat that's still good for me Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. Yes it does. My typical workout day is wake 7:30, drink 8 ounce of water. 8/8:15 ish protein shake. I prefer to make my own in the nutra bullet w/ unflavored protein powder ¼cup plain, greek yogurt and bit of fruit or sometimes a little bit of raw honey. I do water aerobics from 9 -10. I count my protein shake as breakfast. I cannot workout on an empty stomach. My biggest meal of the day is usually lunch. Dinner is often a salad or soup. If I don't eat before a workout, not only don't have enough energy, I get ill. Post workout I'd have an ounce of nuts. It's my recovery food/snack. I then have lunch. 2 days a week I also do a low impact aerobic class at 11. On those days I typically drink water in between workouts and then have a protein bar after that. What I have found is I don't need large quantities of food, but I do need nutritionally packed food.
  10. Do you have a dietician/nutritionist? They can also help with these questions. I was not specifically told 100ml but I was not able to finish a yogurt so I was likely eating slightly less than a hundred. If you eat too much, you can throw up but it is different for everyone. One day I took my pills and ate right after, it was too much for my little tummy and I puked. My doctor told me after not to eat for around 30 minutes after the pills...lives d learn. I normally stick to 30 minutes after but sometimes can't stand taking liquids in for 1.5 hours. I try to eat 5 times a day but that is because I work with when I have to work. Solid food is somewhat dependent on what it is but around 4 tablespoons of food for me.
  11. @@MozzaWehsha rice is a big risk in the first severeal months because it can indeed get stuck. Might I suggest pureed chili with a dollop of low fat or fat free sour cream? Or perhaps pureed chicken, humus, and taco sauce (this one is addictive!)? Another favorite of mine (my puree phase was in the fall of last year) - greek yogurt, pumpkin puree, cinnamon/pumpkin pie spice. Deelish!

    9/2/15 - Can't Eat Enough

Check for stricture. I had to be enlarged 3 times. I'm almost 1 year and still eat very small, if I try to push food I get pain. I eat all day. Nuts. Beans. Can't digest any fish or meat or eggs. With nuts, beans and fage yogurt o make to around 40-50 gr of protein.

    Gaining instead of losing

Since you can drink OK, make sure everything you drink contains protein. I could barely eat more than a couple tablespoons at a time for several months, but I still got in 60-80g protein starting day five via protein shakes, milk, and even thinned Greek Yogurt. And no, I didn't want to eat, either, but I forced myself to get proper nutrition. After all, the whole point of surgery was to be healthy. Like @@perforce suggested, it's easier to eat a couple tablespoons several times/day than it is to try and eat just 1 meal.

    Calorie intake

My goal is 800. Most days I have to fight to get there. (7weeks out). I can hit my Protein target with less than 400 Cals but know that is way too low. I "fluff" my calories with things like yogurt or hard boiled eggs.
  15. Hello everyone, I just registered here because I need help. I'm two weeks post-op (February 16). I cannot eat. The first two weeks were a massive struggle to get Protein in. I could not swallow liquid Protein, they are gave me nausea, so I ate vegetable Soup (blended of course) and drank Water. Monday this week, I had the staples removed and pretty much go called an idiot by the nurse (she was not wrong). So I moved on to the pureed foods, the first thing I tried was Greek yogurt never had before but I have trouble going through the portion, it can take me up to 40 minutes. I am not hungry at all. The only thing I can eat again in about 40 minutes is my two scrambled eggs with cheese and apple sauce. Has anybody else felt this way? On Monday I had actually gained 4 pounds because according to the nurse my body was going into starvation mode..... I'm seriously freaking out. Thanks for any help or advice!

    Does it ever get better?

It gets amazingly better. I had my surgery over 5 years ago, reached my goal and have maintained. I discovered, that one day I could eat something and the next day I couldn't. I enjoy pretty much all foods, just keep my portions very small. I eat around every 3 hours, a yogurt, etc. for Snacks. I use small containers so my portion control is easy. I go out to eat occasionally. Always ask for a to-go container when food is delivered, that way you won't try to over eat. When I get home, I immediately portion the left overs out and have meals for a week. It takes time to figure out what you can eat. Mostly chew your food well, small portions and no liquids while eating. The first few months after surgery I didn't see much of a loss but then I had lost 130 in a year.
  17. So I've been doing well, surgery on 12/28, down 40 pounds and feeling fantastic. Except after I eat dinner. These past two weeks, I've been throwing up 4 of 5 dinners because I get serious pain. I'm perfectly fine during the day; I have my Protein shakes, yogurts, Protein drinks, cottage cheese, bariatric "Chips" etc. without issues. I already know chicken and I are no longer friends, but fish and I are. I put less on my plate than my 4 year olds, never go back for seconds. I think I chew enough and I don't drink with my meals or ahead of them. I am just wondering if anyone else has developed issues like this and how you've gotten around it. I'm starting to worry and my husband thinks I'm becoming bulimic. Thanks in advance for any insight!
  18. Four months post gastric sleeve and two months post gallbladder surgery. Starting weight 234 and I am now 184. Everything was going great, for the first two months. Adapted well to surgery, losing weight, getting in shape, feeling great. Then all of a sudden everything has come to a complete stop. I have lost 2 lbs, in TWO months. I expected stalls but cannot believe it is lasting this long with all that I am doing. Still no, bread, pasta, rice, soft drinks, or caffeine. Breakfast options - egg, Greek yogurt, protein drink, or berries and cheese. Lunch options - lean meats (usually super leftovers) or deli meats & cheese Supper options - Usually lean meat and green vegetable. my quick meals are tuna, imitation crab legs, shrimp, chicken fingers. Snacks options are - Cheese/nuts, protein drinks, Italian ice, nuts and/or seeds. I consume 60 - 90 grams of protein per day, and 60+ oz of water per day. I do not keep up with calories, but it is under 1000 per day. I do not journal, but I am very conscious of what I eat. I exercise 4-5 times per week. Each day I do 30 minutes to one hour of cardio and alternate upper body, lower body and abs with machine weights. I truly workout, I am drenched when I leave. I am so grateful for what I have lost, but was hoping for more. So any advise on what I am doing wrong or what I need to do?

    9/2/15 - Can't Eat Enough

To me it is as easy to eat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt as to drink a Protein shake. I agree. What are you eating? Do you plan your meals and Snacks? Are you tracking your food? What is your protein target? By the way, congratulations on the weight loss. You look great!

    Three Months Post Op Success

Congratulations! I understand that not tracking seems to be working well for you, but how do you know whether or not you are getting enough Protein? Just curious. My surgeon suggests only 40-50 g of protein a day so it's really easy to get into that ballpark without obsessing over grams. A cup of yogurt, a handful of nuts, Collegen powder in a green smoothie or a cup of coffee and some cheese usually does the job. 40-50 grams of protein seems really low. Is that the protein target ongoing or was that just the target in the few days after surgery when it was harder to get in protein? This is first time I think I have ever seen a protein target under 60 grams, and most are closer to 80-100 grams. Mine is 100.

    Does it ever get better?

I find that i'm much more comfy with soft moist foods like refried beans, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese than i am the few pieces of chicken or beef i've tried. Blended chicken chili was good but chewed to death chicken or beef just seems to get drier and drier.
  25. My doc does allow sf jello, sf pudding, Dannon fit & light Greek yogurt, ice pops...I just wish I could at least have a small salad included too.
