    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Officially 3 weeks post op. Down 85 lbs total since beginning this journey, down 33 lbs since liquid diet and down 18 lbs since surgery. I am on soft foods and loving it. Living on egg variations and grilled chicken.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm on week 5 and I still have pain in one of the spots my surgeon cut. It gets better with stretching. 😊

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I took a total of 6 weeks off from work
  5. Hey all, I had my procedure on Dec 11. I’m down 59 lbs. starting weight was 236lbs and I’m 177lbs as of today. The last week has been tough for me. I’m craving chocolate and chips and all the bad stuff that put me at my highest weight. I also struggle to get enough water in and protein. Overall I’m so happy with my decision to have this surgery but I now find myself searching for plastic surgeons for tummy tucks and other skin removal procedures.

    Carbs

I think net carbs are total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohols. But you can't go three months with ZERO carbs. Your brain needs them to function. Just focus on lean protein, non-starchy veggies (like broccoli, zucchini, cucumbers, etc - not potatoes, corn, or butternut squash), and liquids. With whatever room you have left, add fruit, complex carbs (starchy veggies, whole grains, etc) and limit sugars/simple carbs (bread, cookies, chips, rice, etc). Don't aim for perfect. Just try to make good choices 80-90% of the time.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

☘️Good luck to everyone who is scheduled for this week!☘️ On another note, I have a question. Originally, I was hoping for an April 11 surgery date. My pre-procedure testing/evaluations have been complete for a week. The cardiologist cleared me for surgery. My apologies for repeating all this stuff again. This morning, i get an email from CIGNA that they have assigned me a 'personal nurse advocate.' I have a phone call scheduled with 'my' personal nurse advocate later today. The CIGNA person was very nice, and said that the PNA will be able to answer my questions regarding 'where' my paperwork is in the approval process. My question: is it an encouraging sign that this PNA has been assigned to me OR does it really not mean anything at all? Thank you in advance.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm on week 5 foods, soft or cooked fruits. I've been slowly adding things and listening to my body. I had my post op last week and my Dr cleared me for normal life. I'm down nearly 60 pounds from the start of the program, only 20 since surgery. Next week is breads and I really have no desire to eat them. I crave cucumbers, almond butter, and chicken wings. I have trouble stomaching my vitamins, they make me super sick. Most difficult has been getting used to not being able to drink for 30 min after eating. Most delightful has been seeing the difference in my mentality, I'm not feeling so down and sad anymore, I feel like I have something to look forward to every day. Every week is a new food group and every day is a new food, some of which I liked before and hate now, some I hated before and love now. I'm slowly getting more energy again and it makes me feel happy.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm almost through my second week post op. I've lost 11 lbs. If it wasn't for the cuts on my belly and my missing hernia, I wouldn't even be able to tell I had surgery. I do tend to bounce back right after surgery, but then feel it a couple weeks later. I'm still on liquid diet. My guess is, I haven't had anything to stress my stomach yet. I'll reserve full judgement to when I actually progress to eating food.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am five weeks yesterday. I’m down 20 lbs (plus another 12 from pre-op diet). I thought I’d lose more the first month. I’m 5’9 and was 297 on surgery day. Otherwise, I’m doing well. I’ve basically listened to my body and intuition on advancing my diet vs my doctor’s office. That said, I’m still eating primarily soft foods and gradually trying more. I love that I’m not hungry all the time like I used to be. Most difficult for me is eating slowly and not drinking while eating. Also, I am not doing protein shakes. I work to get my protein from my food or Fairlife milk.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm a week post op today, my food cravings are out of this world, I'm very weak and fatigued, still have some pain in my chest and tummy. I'm not a big fan of being down so ready to feel better

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

How's everyone doing now that we're into April? Anyone's plan have them on regular diet yet? (I'm still on soft foods for another week.) What's been the most difficult or the most delightful part of post-op life so far?
  14. I was eating cucumber pretty early out (smeared cream cheese on smoked salmon & wrapped it around a cucumber wedge yum!). Lettuce & other raw vegetables were much later. I preferred to focus on getting cooked vegetables in dishes from soft food & then as a side from solid foods. My tummy was fussy & I could only tolerate steamed green beans, cabbage or cauliflower as a side for a few weeks but most vegetables when cooked in a dish. Hard crunchy raw vegetables like carrot, radishes will take you a lot longer to tolerate because they are almost too scratchy on your throat & too fibrous so harder to digest. Softer high water content vegetables like tomatoes, peeled cucumbers, lettuce will be easier to eat raw but watch the skins on tomatoes. I eat lots of ice berg lettuce but some other greens like rocket, romaine (baby is ok), etc are too coarse & can cause me problems except in tiny amounts even now.

    Pre Op high protein diet

My pre op diet was keto so high protein too but also high fat which I struggled with. No calorie limit though. Why are you focussing on mushy food? After surgery you only eat purées & then soft foods for about 4 weeks & believe me that’s too long! Ensuring you meet your protein goals will be life long thing so I say enjoy any & all proteins in all forms. The protein snacks I go to are cheese, high protein yoghurt, hummus, liverwurst or pate (with crudités or a couple of multi grain crackers), protein bar (be careful some have a lot of sugar or artificial sugars). Occasionally I’ll have nuts or roasted fava beans or chick peas. You can also nibble on some meat like some chicken (watch deli meats that are cured or fatty like ham, salamis, etc.) or a boiled egg. Hope you get a surgery date soon.

    Kept it Quiet?

Two secrets: I not only withheld my surgery; I also withheld that I went to Mexico to have it done. I have kept it to a very small group of 4 -- my 3 adult children and my mom. My kids were my emergency contacts and they knew about the surgery before I went. I went alone to Mexico due to Covid and it took me 2 months to admit to my kids where it was done. It was 4 months later that I shared both with my mom, due to not being able to predict her response (she was charmingly supportive). My mom and children have shared it with some of their friends and significant others. I have not told my siblings, best friend, cousins, or close co-workers. About work: My students have not really noticed. Coworkers are a mixed bag - some ask - one in particular who I am not close to brings up my weightloss A LOT. Almost everyone else just ignores it or compliments my outfits. I have had people come to me about weight loss advice and they have told me about how upset they feel. With an honest heart, I reassure them that they look wonderful to me. Since I am a teacher and gossip is constant in our school, I have chosen time and again to not share my journey. The fallout: One of my three children felt betrayed that I lied about where I was having my surgery - honestly this has put a real strain on our relationship. She is hurting, but she has to come to terms with this in her own time. I feel guilty for not telling other members of my family, but I am standing by my decision. I work very hard to stay body positive and I believe that all sizes are beautiful in others - I could not give this grace to myself. Am I going to continue to hold this as a secret? Most likely yes. If I ever have a man that I am serious about, I may confide in him. As time has worn on, I feel even less likely to tell people, not more.

    Regrets...anyone?

Thanks for your reply Butterfly333, the 7th. is my first appointment. The primary concern is my Gastroparisis. I am anxious, as another weight loss surgery was the last thing I was expecting. Yea I’m trying to navigate the site, I like the old one too. Well let’s see what this week brings. Take care
  18. I'm going on 3 weeks : ( and it's still draining puss 😪
  19. Yeah the throat spray was key when i woke up from surgery as well as all the times i woke up from my gazillion naps. Mr. sweet-talked a nurse to tuck the spray bottle in my gurney in the recovery room so it was there as soon as i woke up, thank goodness…my throat was dry like the desert and it hurt! also really handy in the first couple weeks post cuz i could hardly drink any water and hydrate my throat here Is what i used:
  20. I was the same weight for MONTHS (185pounds)… at about a year out I figured “okay, this is it. I’m stable and maintaining now”. Recently they have me increasing my calories (I’ve managed to get up to 1500 calories a day which has been a difficult transition because I tend to eat foods that are lower in calories ) and then I dropped a Lot of pounds very quickly. I am now 174 (I hadn’t weighed myself in a while because I always hovered around 185) . My nutritionist about had a fit and wants me to do more regular check ins now. (Insert eye roll here). I just got Invisalign too so my tendency to snack (which is how I upped my calories) is now nonexistent because getting these Invisalign trays off are like wrestling a rabid animal 😅 anyways…. I know a lot of people have broken stalls by temporarily increasing their caloric intake. 🤷🏼‍♀️ You could increase your calories and see if that jump starts weight loss again

    Kept it Quiet?

I told my family (brother & sister) because I knew they wouldn’t say anything rude to me - that’s just how we are. I told a few friends & if one of them asked about my weight loss I told them. But I told my husband & daughters that under any circumstances while I’m still alive are they to tell his dad & brother! His family has always made us feel bad about the size of all of us & I just don’t want them knowing. We saw his dad a couple weeks ago when my oldest was visiting. His girlfriend hasn’t seen me in a while. She kept calling me skinny mini & going on & on about how much weight I have lost. When she asked how I did it I just said by changing my eating habits & eating smaller portions. (That’s not a lie) I felt bad that she said anything because my older daughter is a big girl. She would love to have surgery but can’t afford it right now. I could tell that it was upsetting to her😿
  22. 4 weeks ago I was ready to have it taken out but now that I'm unfilled and gaining weight, I think I want to try to fill it a little at a time and see if that helps?
  23. I am new to this site so I hope I'm doing things right! I've had my band for 14 years. Several years ago I started having issues with with food going down and drinks. I could only eat certain things and sometimes it depended on the time of day. I know it's weird and hard to explain. I lived with it until 3 weeks ago. I had an upper GI and it showed nothing went into my stomach (at least that thick drink didn't at that time. I had my band unfilled (mainly because I was taking a trip to Costa Rica and wanted to enjoy eating & drinking without vomiting). Since I've been "unfilled" I have been bloated, swollen and have gained weight. I've been very careful about what I'm eating and all I drink is water (which before I was unfilled water would hardly go down for me). I will be having another upper GI at the end of the month and then see the doctor early may. I just don't want to keep gaining weight! Any ideas or suggestions at what's happening with me?!

    Too much protein

My program advised as soon as you could consume 3 oz. of solid protein at each meal to discontinue the shake. Once you are able to do that you can start adding cooked vegetables and then some limited carbs. If you have room. I'm at right about the 3oz. stage now but haven't cut the shake out yet. Probably next week.
